Message from the CEO Some years it seems like summer ends before it ever really begins. This was one of those years. Nevertheless, with the impending fall, many businesses are swinging back into full gear and we at the Burnaby Board of Trade are no different. Our committees continue to address issues ranging from homelessness to Asia-pacific trade, and our numerous upcoming events are sure to provide long-lasting benefits – and memories – for our members.

On September 7th, the BBOT held its legendary annual charity golf tournament, and once again the sellout event was a tremendous success. This year the tournament was in support of KidSport Burnaby, and we managed to raise over $10,000, including a $5,000 matching contribution by Scotiabank, to help under-privileged youth participate in see Exciting Networking, 2

When most people step onto the golf course, they do so knowing a few things for certain. They’ll shank a few balls into the trees, they’ll spend some time in a sand trap or two and they’ll make at least one brilliant shot worthy of boasting about in the clubhouse. For the BBOT members who participated in the annual Charity Golf Tournament, one more thing was added to that list – they’d be giving kids across BC the opportunity to experience the benefits of sport.

The Lower Mainland’s dismal summer gave way to an unseasonably warm September day as representatives from Burnaby’s core businesses

took to the links at beautiful Riverway Golf Course for a day of golf, prizes, fine dining and generosity. The tournament’s sponsors kept things lively at each hole, offering players a variety of snacks, activities and networking opportunities to keep them entertained while they waited to tee off.

Play on the course was highlighted by the rarest of feats – a hole-in-one by course pro Brad Ewart. Lest there be any dispute, the shot was witnessed and verified by none other than Burnaby Mayor Derek Corrigan.

When she met Bala Naidoo, Regional Director of Investors Group, she found the chance to take the first steps on an unexpected new career path. Naidoo saw something in her and brought her on as a financial consultant. Wang quickly distinguished herself as an award winning consultant uniquely capable of tapping into the ever-growing Chinese market in Burnaby.

Two years later, Wang is now the Director of Investors Group’s new Mandarin Speaking Division. For their part, Investors Group is benefiting greatly from this partnership that has helped them to adapt to the changing face of the community and increase their market share.

For Wang, coming from a medical background it has always been her nature to want to help people. While she no longer heals the sick and injured for a living, assisting newcomers to Canada in finding their feet financially and taking on the role of coach and mentor means that she still spends her days helping people in need.

50 years ago, patrons of Brentwood Town Centre would have likely arrived via Chevrolet Impala; today shoppers commonly flock to the mall from the SkyTrain. The arrival of the adjacent SkyTrain Station in 2002 is among the many milestones that the mall recognized as it celebrated its grand 50th birthday party on August 13th.

Brentwood Town Centre is Burnaby’s third largest shopping mall with 110 shops. It opened on August 17th, 1961 as a single-level partial open air strip

centre and enclosed mall. At the time it was the largest mall in British Columbia with 48 stores. Of the mall’s original store anchors – Eaton’s, Zellers and Loblaw’s Supermarket – only Zellers still remains, while the others have been replaced by stores such as Sears and London Drugs.

In 1989, Brentwood Town Centre underwent a drastic alteration of its façade with the construction of the iconic white domed roof. The peaks of the roof, made of Teflon fabric, were intended to mimic the peaks of the North Shore Mountains in the background. As part of the major renovations that the mall underwent that year, a second level of

shops was also added.

Despite the many changes that the mall has undergone over the past five decades, Brentwood Town Centre has consistently been a popular and important part of the Burnaby community. Staying true to its familyoriented roots, the mall even offers weekly activities for babies and tots, including salsa babies and children’s story and craft time.

Strategy is Key in Social Media CHRIS BAXTER

Everyone is talking about the benefits of social media and rightfully so. Is your business using it? More importantly, is your business using it to its full potential? It’s one thing to put up a profile on each of the major social networking sites. But then what?

Last month, the BBOT held a three part social media seminar aimed at helping its members learn not only the fundamentals of these tools, but how they are best used to improve their businesses.

Social Media 1 hosted by Carly Franklin of Boost Design + Marketing introduced members to the basics and showed them how to get started on each of the major social networking sites.

With that foundation built, Social Media 2 with online strategist Adrian Liem examined best practices and explained the importance of establishing a strategy.

Finally, Social Media 3 facilitated by Constant Contact’s Guy Steeves explored advanced strategies for using social networking as part of an all encompassing communications plan.

Throughout the three seminars, one thing became abundantly clear – social media may be an inexpensive way to market your business, but it is far from a turnkey operation. Setting up a profile and letting it sit dormant for months at a time will not help your business succeed.

If you’re going to utilize social media, and you should, understand that you will need to develop a strategy and stick to it.

If you take the time to build a presence and engage with your customers, these tools have the potential to take your business to a whole new level.

Member Generosity Par for the Course from BBOT Golf, 1 cup, the participants made their way to Riverway’s gorgeous new clubhouse where they were treated to a gourmet buffet. When all in attendance had their fill, the luxurious raffle prizes and the day’s hardware were handed out including awards for Longest Drive, Closest to the Pin, Best Team and Most Honest Team.

In a bit of a twist however, the biggest winner of the day had the largest number next to its name. With Scotiabank matching $5,000 worth of donations and Paul Gallop, Operations Manager of the Delta Burnaby Hotel and Conference Center donating his 50/50 winnings, the

tournament’s charity KidSport walked away with over $10, 000. “We were overwhelmed by the extreme generosity of all the golfers,” said Lawrence Ryan, Co-Chair of KidSport. That money will go towards removing the financial barriers that prevent underprivileged kids from participating in organized sport.

Commenting on the day, BBOT President and CEO Paul Holden stated, “We couldn’t have done it without the help of our sponsors and volunteers who deserve a ton of credit in making the day such a triumph.” With the event agreed by all to be a resounding success, anticipation is already building for next year’s tournament.

Internet Video is one of our most powerful communications tools today.

One of those video tools is a website Welcome Video. Powerful? You bet! If done well, your website Welcome Video can be the catalyst for your potential customers to stop the search and pick up the phone, right there and then. But we’ve also seen the opposite. Another told me “she droned on like a robot and was totally boring”. The customer moved on.

Based on my experience behind the camera working with all types of everyday people, leaders and non-professional talent over 30 years, I want to share with you some helpful tips on what works in “website Welcome Videos”.

First, your Welcome Video is not about you. It’s about your customers’ experience when they first visit your website as a potential customer. We know that before people will buy from you, they need to know you, like you, and trust you. So… 1. Make your Welcome Video accessible. Before I know you, I have to find you. Put your Welcome Video on the front page of your business website. 9 out of 10 web visitors will click on a web video FIRST. 2. Aim for around three minutes of finished edited video content. Use professional fill lighting and a lapel mic.

4. Talk about the important things a customer first wants to hear about your business, service or leadership, briefly. Your web welcome video is no place for your encyclopedic knowledge of your industry. Practice (off camera) a few 30-second responses to potential questions about your business Your website Welcome Video simply needs to assure your website visitor that they are in the right place, you are respectful of their time, you seem knowledgeable about what they are

looking for, and that you might be worthy of a no-risk exploratory conversation.

Tourism...Burnaby?

This week I had the opportunity to sit down with our neighbor and BBOT member Ian Wish, the Manager of Sales and Marketing at Tourism Burnaby to find out how their small team of three accomplishes so much.

Tell me a little bit about Tourism Burnaby and what your mandate is?

Tourism Burnaby is a non-profit Destination Marketing Organization. We exist solely to drive visitation and hotel stays to Burnaby, which in turn drives economic activity to all stakeholders who may benefit from a tourist’s stay.

Being next to a large city like Vancouver what are the kinds of things that you focus your marketing efforts on?

First of all, we don’t try to go head to head with Vancouver when it comes to destination marketing –the reality is, they got us beat there. What we do instead is focus on Burnaby’s assets and include our proximity to Vancouver as one of the reasons to come here.

For that reason, and since we’re such a small organization with limited resources, we focus on three core markets that we think will drive the most economic activity to Burnaby: Sport Tourism, Meetings & Conventions, and Cultural Tourism. Burnaby has great sport assets as well as wonderful hotels and some of the best meeting spaces in

Metro Vancouver. Also because of the size of some of our hotels we’re able to focus on a smaller group size (than say Tourism Vancouver) by offering a level of service they’re not used to, which gives us a bit of a strategic advantage. Burnaby also has a number of cultural attractions that we work hard to promote, like the Burnaby Blues and Roots Festival, the Burnaby Village Museum and more.

Do you have a current campaign you’re working on and can you tell me about it.

This summer we launched one of our first major consumer marketing campaigns aimed at the BC resident outside of the lower mainland. The Campiagn runs until the end of September. It’s called “7 Ways to Get Away” and it’s designed to bring BC residents,

attractions, while enjoying what we have to offer as well. What we offer simply makes it more affordable with a few added perks.

The campaign is based around a contest that offers people the choice of seven different packages; whether it’s adventure they’re after, a night out, a show, shopping, a casino or a Whitecaps game. Each package is built around a theme and includes hotel stay, travel allowances and meals.

As part of the campaign, through the summer we had some street teams hitting the pavement to spread the word in Victoria and Kelowna, as well as radio spots and significant PR.
