While too many outlooks and annual reports these days still reference a fragile economy and business challenges, I’m pleased to report that 2012 was a good year for the Burnaby Board of Trade, with new growth, new programs, and positive results. We have continued to build important new relationships with key partners in the community, we’re more engaged than ever in representing local businesses on important policy matters, and we have been successful in our main goal to better serve our membership by working to improve every aspect of our business operations.

For us, 2013 is going to be an opportunity to build on those successes to make a bigger difference for our membership and the community at large.

Last year we introduced to our membership two major projects the BBOT was working on. The first was the Pledge for a Sustainable Community, a comprehensive online resource with the goal of helping businesses large and small reduce their carbon footprint while at the same time promoting their company and saving money. Thanks to the generous support of our program sponsors Vancity, Hemlock, Encorp Pacific, ABC Recycling, and Electronic Arts, the Pledge is now live at bbotpledge.ca and is growing every day. Our goal when we soft launched just before Christmas was to have 50 businesses signed up for when we hard launch later this year. Pennies to be phased out beginning in early February The Canadian Government announced last year as part of its Economic Action Plan that it would be phasing out the penny, a process that will begin on February 4th, 2013. The reasoning behind the decision, according to the Department of Finance website, is due to its excessive and rising cost of production relative to face value, the increased accumulation of pennies by Canadians in their households, environmental considerations, and the significant handling costs the penny imposes on retailers, financial institutions and the economy in general. The site also claims that phasing out the one cent coin will save taxpayers an estimated $11 million per year.

Once the Royal Canadian Mint has ceased distributing pennies on February 4th, businesses are encouraged to begin rounding their cash transactions to the nearest nickel. For example, a cup of coffee that cost $2.84 after tax would be rounded up to $2.85. A sandwich costing $4.62 would round down to $4.60. Only cash transactions will require rounding, as cheques and electronic payment methods (debit, credit cards, etc) can be settled to the exact amount. PST returns in April With the Provincial Sales Tax (PST) set to return on April 1st, 2013, the Burnaby Board of Trade is working to make sure member businesses are fully prepared to make the transition. Over the next couple of months, the Board will be regularly updating bbot.ca with updated information, the PST’s expected impact on business, links to government information, and helpful tips. The BBOT will also be holding seminars and events including a special breakfast event with Minister of State for Small Business Naomi Yamamoto on January 24th, and a Making the Switch PST transition seminar on February 7th.

It is important to note that most businesses will need to register with the Government of British Columbia and attain a PST registration number. For detailed information on the transition back to the PST, visit bbot.ca/pst-transition. !

Harry Watson, President of Vancouver’s Metro Testing Laboratories. Metro Testing Labs also has other techniques for recruiting skilled immigrants. “In our advertising we ask to have a second language. This prompts skilled immigrants to apply,” Harry explains. “We put on free training courses for the type of work that we do, and we also send the applicants out to shadow some of our employees. Then we will often offer them a job.”

Harry notes that his approach of actively seeking out skilled immigrants for its workforce is unusual in his field, where he says most companies tend to be somewhat “tribal” in whom they hire. At Metro Testing Labs, however, the “tribe” is global. “To date we have brought people from 15 different cultures into the group—no small thing for a small company,” says Harry, who immigrated to Canada in the late 70’s and can count himself among Metro’s global tribe.

Harry says the pay-offs are enormous. “Skilled immigrants have definitely contributed to the success of Metro, and they really do feel part of the company. I think they feel proud of the company.”

Immigrant Employment Council of BC’s executive director, Kelly Pollack believes employers like Harry who have adjusted their hiring standards and recruitment techniques to include, rather than exclude, skilled immigrants from their talent pool, will have a significant competitive advantage. “As BC employers face growing skill shortages, what constitutes the “right fit” is undergoing a transformation,” says Kelly.

support from dedicated businesses, not just from Burnaby, but from all across the Lower Mainland.

The other program we introduced last year was Access, our student career development program which has also passed all expectations so far in its initial year. Although we’re only halfway through this inaugural session, we have been receiving great feedback from both our young professionals and the Connectors who have been helping them to navigate the often tumultuous business landscape.

We have over 60 participants in the program this year mostly from SFU, BCIT

and UBC, and we expect even more for the 2013/14 session, with applications already rolling in for the October intake.

Of course, the BBOT also remains committed to improving its regular services and programs as well, and so we have been reaching out to our membership to ensure that we continue to meet the needs of Burnaby businesses. We recently sent out a comprehensive survey to all our contacts on every key aspect of BBOT services and operations. Results from the survey have verified that the main reasons for BBOT membership continue to be for networking and learning opportunities, for promoting

one’s business, and for giving back to the community. That is why we continuously work to create new and better events, optimized workshops and seminars, and thoughtful committee initiatives, so that our members can get the very best value out of their membership.

In addition, as part of our mandate to facilitate business success through economic development, the Burnaby Board of Trade will continue to work with the City of Burnaby to help execute their economic development strategy, as well as the Burnaby Social Sustainability Strategy as part of our ongoing commitment to social development

for a stronger and more inclusive community. This year, we are excited to engage with the City in the development and execution of their new Environmental Sustainability Strategy as well.

With over 400,000 self-employed individuals in the province, BC is the home of the entrepreneur. And to help the next batch of business owners get started, the Burnaby Board of Trade has made the process of starting a business easy with its Business Services Desk sponsored

by Scotiabank. Run by knowledgeable BBOT staff, the Business Services Desk offers a simple and helpful way of navigating the business start-up process, including name approvals and business registrations. Name approvals, the first step in the new business process, determine if the prospective name for a new business is available for use.

Once armed with a name, entrepreneurs can register with the provincial registry through the business registration service also offered. While getting assistance completing these necessary documents, individuals can also access valuable information on starting and succeeding in business courtesy of useful how-to guides provided complimentary by Scotiabank. From their Running Start for Business program to their StartRight Program for Newcomers, Scotiabank provides step-by-step guidance and advice for starting a business, while providing the financial services needed by a new business. The Business Services Desk is located in the Burnaby Board of Trade offices and is open during the BBOT’s regular office hours.
