On Wednesday, September 5th, the Burnaby Board of Trade (BBOT) hosted its annual charity golf tournament, this year in support of the Burnaby Hospice Society—a not-for-profit organization dedicated to providing compassionate care to individuals and families during the end-of-life journey.

The event, which took place at Riverway Golf Course and Clubhouse in South Burnaby, raised $10,000 dollars through player’s pack sales, a 50/50 draw, and

a matching contribution of $5,000 by Scotiabank.

Highlights of the day included team and individual awards, numerous contest and raffle prizes, and a buffet dinner. Out on the course, players enjoyed sponsor activities on every hole, ranging from games to food and beverage sampling.

Commenting on the day’s events, BBOT President & CEO Paul Holden noted that the day was a huge success for everyone involved. “It was a great day for golf,” he

said. “We managed to raise a tremendous amount of money for the Burnaby Hospice Society, a very worthy cause, and everyone who participated had a wonderful time. We couldn’t have done it without the help of our sponsors and volunteers who deserve a ton of credit in making the day such a triumph.”

The games showcased a growing trend that sport is not just for the young but for the young at heart as well. 650 seniors participated when the games were first held in Vernon in 1988. This year, close to 3700 seniors ranging in age from 55 to 90 competed from across BC. Events like this don’t happen without the generous support of its community. The business community, volunteers, The City of Burnaby and the provincial government worked together to show Burnaby’s capacity to host major sporting events.

high tea dim sum event series connects bbot to the asian business community michael keller '@"B:G)5%%!A,": It’s no secret that a big part of Burnaby’s economic success is the diverse nature of its business community.

From all over the world, people have settled here to make this city stronger, and as the centre of Canada’s Asia-Pacific gateway, there is a particularly vibrant Asian business community.

Recognizing the potential to draw an even greater perspective of knowledge and experience, the Burnaby Board of Trade has launched a monthly High Tea Dim Sum event in an effort to better reach out to the Asian

community. The event, which has been running since June, invites new business contacts from outside the BBOT to join members in an intimate group setting for a delicious array of dim sum delicacies while discussing issues involving the Asia-Pacific region, and learning more about the BBOT. “Creating stronger connections with Burnaby’s Asian business community has been a priority of the BBOT for some time, but I’m really pleasantly surprised with how well received these events have been so far,” remarked Burnaby Board of Trade CEO, Paul Holden. “We started out thinking we would try one just to gauge the interest,

and when that filled up, we thought we would try another.

Now they’re just getting bigger and bigger, we’re getting great speakers, and I think we have a hit!”

Recent speakers at the event have included Phebe Chan from Fraser Milner Casgrain LLP, who spoke on recent changes to Canada’s immigration and work visa laws, and most recently Mayor Derek Corrigan. October’s event will feature Hon. John Yap, BC Minister of Advanced Education, Innovation and Technology and the Minister responsible for Multiculturalism.

+B( @B=B1@$< =<#(= ,8@%1/& /8=9%B==B= 1= A1'92&)A@9B%"2& The idea that Burnaby boasts a progressive business community is being supported by new evidence suggesting local businesses here are generally supportive of family-friendly workplaces, and have some kind of policies in place to accommodate employee needs.

The study, titled Are Burnaby Workplaces Friendly?, was developed by the Burnaby Board of Trade and members of its Social Development Committee to determine the extent to which the issue resonates with BBOT members and their employees. Data was collected through surveys and interviews with small, medium, and corporate sized

businesses in Burnaby from a number of different sectors.

Survey respondents were asked to identify the extent to which their organization supports various familyfriendly indicators such as alternate work arrangements, recognition of care responsibilities, and workplace culture/ environment. Specially, respondents were asked to indicate whether there were existing policies in place, and if so, whether those policies were formal or informal.

Findings of the report indicate that most organizations have a wide range of

policies in all categories identified. While most large companies had some kind of formal policies in place, smaller and medium sized companies were more likely to have informal policies. Approximately 10% of companies identified as having no supports in place.

Information from the survey will be used by the Social Development Committee to inform future board initiatives, and has been used to guide the development of a new award category for the Burnaby Business Excellence Awards, co-presented by the BBOT and the City of Burnaby every November. !
