Clio big winners at the Burnaby Business Excellence Awards On November 5th, the Burnaby Board of Trade and the City of Burnaby hosted the 16th annual Burnaby Business Excellence Awards, recognizing organizations that have demonstrated outstanding business success and have had a positive and significant impact on the community.

The event, held at the Hilton Vancouver Metrotown, was emceed by Global BC on-air personalities Squire Barnes and Lynn Colliar.

Winners were honoured in nine award categories, plus the Burnaby Business Hall of Fame where The Valley Bakery was recognized as this year’s inductee.

BBOT joins Shop The Neighbourhood™, a local shopping campaign dedicated to small business support

By Michael Keller michael@bbot.ca The Burnaby Board of Trade (BBOT) is taking part in Shop The Neighbourhood, a free annual initiative of Yellow Pages created in 2013 to encourage support for small businesses (SME) through local shopping.

“We are pleased to announce that the BBOT will be participating in this year’s Shop The Neighbourhood. Business owners in Burnaby are constantly facing new challenges, so we appreciate initiatives that help small businesses stand out and that highlight the importance of buying local,” said Board of Trade President and CEO Paul Holden.

Following a multi-week awareness campaign, Shop The Neighbourhood will take place on Saturday, November 28th, between Black Friday and Cyber Monday, two shopping days notorious for driving dollars online or across the border. Shop The Neighbourhood will also feature exclusive deals at local businesses to encourage local spending, accessible via the YP Shopwise app.

“Small businesses add vitality to our community and it is essential that we support them. We hope that people will shop locally on November 28th and show their support for their local businesses,” continued Holden.

Scheduled during the busiest shopping time of the year, Shop The Neighbourhood sheds light on the important impact that money spent locally can have, directly benefiting our neighbourhoods and communities. On Saturday, November 28th, Canadians are encouraged to make local purchases in support of their local businesses.

In 2014, over 750,000 Canadians joined the Yellow Pages campaign, spending $89 million at local businesses during the Shop The Neighbourhood event. ¾

By Tessa Vanderkop tessa@bbot.ca Atticus Financial is a leader in providing financing for energy efficiency based projects such as lighting retrofits and they are also active in providing financing options for the biomass sector, both of which help to reduce carbon emissions for their clients.

Ray Salama, President of Atticus Financial believes running a business that is proactive in reducing its footprint is not only good value for his business but for his clients as well.

What got you started thinking about sustainability?

I actually come by it quite naturally – my grandmother was my inspiration and a role model. She was into recycling, composting and always looking for ways to reduce waste long before it became popular – I’m talking the 1970’s here. I guess it just stuck with me as being the right thing to do.

How did you decide what was most important to tackle first?

After completing the Climate Smart training, I realized that we could do even more to reduce our environmental footprint by further reducing the amount of paper we use and spending less time traveling, so it was a combination of those two things at the same time. We try to utilize digital information rather than printing out documents as much as possible – we are in the financing business and it takes time to change people’s habits

to realize that they don’t need a hard copy of everything in a file these days. The other big change is we have many of our leasing/ financing specialists working from home offices now, so there’s less requirement for them to commute to an office.

Do you feel this has any impact on how you do business?

Absolutely. We get a lot more done via email now – for example, we can send out or receive information from our clients electronically, which tends to reduce paper consumption. We’ve also been able to reduce our physical space requirements, recently moving to a smaller office closer to where our key office staff live. This means lower overhead and less commuting, both of which are positive changes for the business.

What do you hope to achieve by making your business more sustainable?

It’s a combination of a few things. First, we want to “walk the talk” as they say – in addition to the usual equipment and truck leasing & financing for businesses, Atticus also finances energy efficiency projects such as lighting retrofits, boiler replacements and compressor upgrades, all of which reduce energy use for our clients. The benefit to our clients is that their monthly energy cost savings are enough to more than cover the monthly payments, so it is cash flow positive and environmentally friendly at the same time – a double positive result. The second thing we hope to achieve is just being one

more advocate for sustainable business practices, reducing our own footprint and encouraging others to do the same thing.

What are your next steps and goals?

One thing that I’d really like to see is the acceptance of electronic signatures in our industry. It’s already starting to happen in the US, so I hope that we aren’t too far off. It would be a huge step in our business not to have to print out contracts and such and then we could make it even more sustainable and actually provide faster service at the same time. Once we can sort out the legal and security issues, my goal is to be one of the first companies in the Canadian equipment finance industry to offer the service to our clients.

What was your motivation for joining the Pledge for a Sustainable Community and what have been its benefits?

It just seemed like a no brainer – we are already Climate Smart certified and the pledge was very much in keeping with our business philosophy, so we joined in the hopes of adding one more voice to the discussion and perhaps we can encourage others to do the same thing. The benefits to taking a sustainability pledge are not only the fact that you are doing something to keep our beautiful community healthy and sustainable, but you will also reduce your costs as a result.

Why wouldn’t you want to do that?

Burnaby Board of Trade calls on PMO to work with business on GHG reduction targets

By Michael Keller michael@bbot.ca In advance of the upcoming United Nations Climate Change Conference in Paris, the Burnaby Board of Trade has submitted a letter to the Office of the Prime Minister (PMO), calling on new Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to join with other international leaders in seeking a meaningful global agreement to address climate change with new greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction targets. The Board of Trade also asked that government work with business organizations such as itself to develop the necessary market-based strategy to help Canada, and its business community, achieve those reductions.

According to the letter, the Burnaby Board of Trade believes Canada will need to develop a plan for a long-term transition

to a low-carbon economy that ensures the country meets its international obligations while protecting and enhancing the dynamic, innovative economy we currently enjoy. The Board notes the importance of government seeking the input of the businesses community in creating such a plan, as it will be necessary for businesses to play a considerable role in achieving any emissions reduction targets.

The letter was also sent to BC Premier Christy Clark as well as relevant minsters at both the federal and provincial levels.

The Truth about Your Group Benefits: How Employee Group Insurance Plans are really priced Your Experience Rated benefits make up the larger part of your monthly bill and cover those events that are more repetitive and predictable. For example, employees generally go to the dentist 6 months for a checkup and will renew their prescriptions every 90 days.

Unknown to most, Insurers look at these two categories differently. For pooled benefits, the insurer ‘pools’ all their clients experience together to determine how much money they will need to pay all their life claims, LTD claims and other pooled benefits.

When pricing your Experience Rated benefits, the insurer only looks at your company’s experience to calculate your price. In simple terms, after adding up all premiums and subtracting all your claims, the insurer assesses whether you left them enough to cover their profits and expenses.

If you did not, the insurers view this deficit as if they just lent you money. Essentially they will put you on a payment plan over the next year in the form of higher premiums to cover your ‘debts.’

We’re talking about Group Benefits. Employees value their health and a dental plan above most other perks but is it really insurance? Or is it just a company savings account from which to draw from when needed?

Employee benefits plans are comprised of two categories; Pooled Benefits and Experience Rated Benefits. The Pooled Benefits comprise of items like your Life Insurance, Long Term Disability, and Out of Country Travel. The Experience Rated benefits are your Health, Dental, Drugs, Vision and Short Term Disability.

In many cases, the amount targeted to be left over with the Insurers’ can be has high as 35%. This means that your company is, in effect, paying them $35 to pay out $65 in claims. The healing power of giving People who attended are still talking about it.

Last Friday evening, Burnaby Hospital Foundation held its annual fundraising event at the Delta Burnaby.

By all accounts, New York, NewYork, the gala, was an unprecedented suc-

cess, showcasing Burnaby’s unique community spirit and dedication to its hospital.

In general, the foundation raises money to pay for medical equipment and improvements to patient care at Burnaby Hospital.

This year’s recipient of the Burnaby Hospital Foundation’s Corporate Citizenship Award was Bosa Properties. Here, Colin Bosa accepts the award on behalf of the company.
