BEST OF BURNABY

The businesses listed in this special section have been selected as the best in their specific categories by the readers of the Burnaby NOW. We published ballots early this year and offered a $2,000 shopping spree as an incentive to cast your votes for your favourites in over 100 different categories. The $2,000 shopping spree is provided courtesy of Metropolis at Metrotown, Lougheed Town Centre and Brentwood Town Centre. Well it worked! We counted thousands of official Burnaby NOW Ballots in print and online, and tabulated winners for all categories. The $2,000 shopping spree winner was drawn and we congratulate Donna Guan of

The future is now. While holding this Best of Burnaby special section, you’re actually gripping a video. In fact, quite a few videos. As you’ve likely learned by now, the Burnaby NOW is embracing Layar, a pretty exciting, interactive technology that intertwines traditional print media with digital information utilizing augmented reality. Since February we’ve been continuing to expand our readers’ access to extra content via Layar. The app cuts out the middleman, so to speak, and takes readers directly to videos, photo galleries and other extra content, not found on the printed page. It’s cutting edge technology which is being used by more print products and magazines every day across the globe to expand their

Readers choose their favourites in Burnaby Burnaby. While this wasn’t a scientific survey, the level of participation does lend credibility to the outcome. Most market research is based on the responses of a much smaller segment of the population. The 2013 Best Of Burnaby winners are most deserving of our recognition as simply the “Best in Burnaby”. But don’t take our word for it. Why not visit each of the businesses listed in this special feature and decide for yourself. Then, next year you’ll be more qualified to cast your votes in our 17th Annual Best of Burnaby Awards!

Congratulations to Donna Guan of Burnaby! Winner of the $2,000 shopping spree The Burnaby NOW would like to thank the following for donating the $2,000 Shopping Spree.

comes to life with Layar readers’ experiences. Sound complex? It’s not. In fact, it’s as simple as taking a photo with your smart phone. Check the advertisement below for how to get the free app, and how to use it. The real benefit here is an all-inclusive experience. If you’ve ever learned of an online photo gallery while reading a newspaper away from your computer, or half-heard a website address while listening to the radio, you know what we’re talking about.

We’ve erased the line between print and digital media. In this section you can scan the pages and meet some of the winners of our Best of Burnaby annual event in their own videos. And, in all advertisements, you can scan with layar and discover more about the merchants’ products and services. And, to learn more about Best of Burnaby directly from Lara Graham, our advertising and marketing director, scan the photo below with Layar and check out her video.

CITY POLITICIAN

Corrigan comes out on top

Mayor Derek Corrigan has been consecutively re-elected to represent the City of Burnaby as mayor four times in a row. NOW readers recognize his impact and voted him Best City Politician. Corrigan was first elected to Burnaby City Council in 1987. “This year marks my 24th consecutive year as a member of Burnaby council, where I strive to bring the history and heritage of my two decades of public service to every important decision,” Corrigan says in his bio on the city’s website. Corrigan is – at times – an outspoken mayor

who doesn’t back away from saying what he thinks is best for the people of Burnaby. Corrigan was born in Vancouver and attended Sir Charles Tupper High School. After winning a scholarship to UBC, he was granted early admission to law school after three years of undergraduate study in political science and philosophy. He was called to the B.C. Bar in 1978, says the website. During his lengthy political career, Corrigan has served on numerous boards and committees at the local, regional and national levels, and been a member of various clubs that promote community service.

LIVE THEATRE VENUE

Shadbolt Centre offers so much more than just performances

It’s a Mecca for culture lovers in Burnaby. And, as such, the Shadbolt Centre for the Arts is recognized as the city’s Best Venue for Live Theatre by NOW readers. “That’s great! We love when we’ve been voted best,” Shadbolt Theatre coordinator Cory Philley said when she heard the news. This year the Shadbolt will host Vessel, described as a “haunting contemporary dance,” Ballet B.C. at the ’Bolt, Opera performances and Live At the ’Bolt with a dance company that defies gravity. Those are just a few of the upcoming shows at the arts venue that serves

as a hub for people interested in creativity. “When (theatre-goers) come, they know they are going to see a quality performance in a great venue and never leave disappointed,” said Jared Bowles, Shadbolt marketing and sponsorship coordinator. The Shadbolt is located near the shore of Deer Lake. The centre offers various programs, including music, dance, ceramic, theatre, visual and literary arts for all ages and abilities. The Shadbolt boasts a 285-seat James Cowan Theatre and the 150-seat Studio Theatre and a range of other rooms.

Shop, and watch, till you drop Sometimes people watching is as much fun as shopping. And sometimes window-shopping is as interesting as people watching. But whatever you are doing, readers say it’s best to do it at Metropolis at Metrotown. The mega-shopping mall – one of the biggest in the country – was voted the Best Indoor Mall, Best Place for People Watching and Best Place to Go Window Shopping by NOW readers.

One of the people worth watching when he visited the mall last year was well-known Canadian wildlife artist Robert Bateman. He made an appearance at Metropolis at Metrotown in the fall. The 82-yearold artist, environmentalist and naturalist, was at an art event at Smart Frames and Accents. In previous years, pop stars, giant dinosaur displays, local choirs, celebrities and even a mega street hockey tournament have entertained shoppers. But for

the everyday looky-loo, there’s always a fun fashionista or two to check out in the mall. And when it comes to style, the mall is chock-full of fashion finds and ideas. Window-shopping is a great way to gather them up, find some inspiration and get ready for the coming season. Millions of individual shoppers visit the almost 400 shops and services on three sprawling levels at the destination mall every year.

Healthy standing in city events. The agency has made an impact in Burnaby – NOW readers have voted it Best Community Service Organization. “I’m just thrilled, and it just speaks volumes on what we’ve been doing for a quarter of a century,” HANS director Milt Bowling said about the honour. “We’ve helped a lot of people in that time.” HANS members are “like-minded

people of all backgrounds, lay persons and professional, who share an interest in a natural approach to health care,” the website states. The agency has two key strategies – one, to provide health information to individuals so they can make informed choices, and two, to spearhead health issues important to the individual. HANS has the largest online health library in B.C. and fields up to 25,000 inquiries a year from British Columbians, according to its website.

Health matters: Milt Bowling is a director with HANS, a charitable natural health resource that provides information on preventive medicine and natural COMMUNITY SERVICE therapeutics in the city.

that’s at the heart of it.” The first Hats Off Day was held in 1984 as a sidewalk event – the parade came along five years later. This year’s theme is Mad Hatter’s Tea Party and is being held on Saturday, June 1, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. “You can take that any which way, it can be a celebration of hats, it can be a celebration of zaniness, it can be a celebration of tea,” Kolic said, laughing. The Heights neighbourhood is known for its culinary offerings, and many hungry visitors are drawn to the event to taste some of the neighbourhood’s delicious food. Hats Off Day is held on Hastings Street, between Boundary Road and Gamma Avenue. For more information about the festival and ways to get involved, visit www.hatsoffday.com.

Every year, on the first Saturday in June for almost three decades, merchants in the Heights take their “hats off ” to their customers. The event started as a small street celebration and has morphed into one of the largest community gatherings in the Lower Mainland. Burnaby NOW readers have taken their hats off to the event, honouring it Best Annual Burnaby Festival this year. “Apart from it being a charming event in its own right … it’s also hard to find a community celebration on that scale – 11-blocks long, a parade, masses of entertainment and food – that still feels authentically small and home grown,” said Isabel Kolic, executive director of the Heights Merchants Association, which helps organize the popular event. “I think

BURNABY CELEBRITY

Buble´ top Burnaby celebrity

He’s a Burnaby boy who’s made good. Really good. Michael Bublé’s talent took him from the hallways of Cariboo Hill Secondary School to the global stage. He’s won numerous accolades, including multiple Grammy and Juno awards, and has had several chart-topping records. He’s also known for being an unrelenting supporter of B.C. Children’s Hospital. He’s given concert proceeds, made visits to young patients and their families, performed as an ambassador for the hospital, and more. No matter how high he soars, the international superstar will always be a hometown

hero for NOW readers, who voted him Best Burnaby Celebrity. Bublé’s music career started at 18, when he began appearing in local talent shows, doing any gig that came his way. He slugged it out for several years to make a name for himself. By 2000 the crooner got his big break, singing at the wedding of former Prime Minister Brian Mulroney’s daughter. There he met award-winning producer David Foster, who agreed to work with Bublé. The charming crooner has been gaining acclaim and topping charts ever since.

SECRET RENDEZVOUS

Picture perfect Mountain

It might be the worst kept secret in Burnaby. NOW readers voted Burnaby Mountain Conservation Area as the Best Spot for a Secret Rendezvous. The breathtakingly scenic mountain boasts one of the best views in the Lower Mainland and a number of secluded spots to take in that view. The City of Burnaby website says the area was first logged in 1903 and became a popular hiking area in the 1920s. The city dedicated the area for park and recreation use in 1957. Simon Fraser University opened its doors in the mid1960s; the university transferred 820 acres of its land to Burnaby Mountain Conservation Area in 1995, the website states. The city site also notes another fun fact on

the site – red huckleberries favour soils rich in decaying wood, and they can often be found growing on stumps or logs on the ground at Burnaby Mountain. Along with the view, the mountain offers space to play, a colourful rose garden, delicious food at the acclaimed Horizon’s Restaurant and the Kamui Mintara carved pole sculptures on Burnaby Mountain. “Sitting under these poles is one of the most popular places in the Lower Mainland to watch the sunset. The outline of downtown Vancouver and the North Shore Mountains provide a stunning backdrop,” the city website says. Those views include the Burrard Inlet, the North Shore Mountains, downtown Vancouver and Burnaby itself.

PLACE TO WALK DOG

Pooches get room to roam Dog owners in Burnaby have a place they love to let their pet play. Fraser Foreshore Park was voted Best Pace to Walk Your Dog by NOW readers. The waterfront park offers pooches a place to explore and take in the best of mother nature.

There is also fun for kids of the two-footed kind – with a riverside pirate ship in the playground. Visitors can have a picnic along the shoreline and play in the grass. The scenic park is fun for the whole family, especially the furriest members.

PLACE TO GOLF

Riverway Golf course takes the lead Good value, convenience and new amenities – including a 54-stall driving range – are some of the reasons Burnaby NOW readers voted Riverway Golf course the Best Place to Golf in the city. The City of Burnaby-owned course’s recent updates may be the reason it pushed passed the city’s “other” course – Burnaby Mountain. “We built new clubhouse facilities two years ago that have the amenities of a restaurant and lounge, patio and catering facilities,” said David O’Connor, who is in charge of golf operations for the city.

The win means bragging rights can go the staff at Riverway as Burnaby Mountain Golf Course won the title last year. O’Connor admits there may be a little friendly competition between the two city-run operations. “They’ve finally conquered the king for one year,” he said about Riverway staff, with a laugh. But, he got serious, and said it was a “compliment” to the staff for all its hard work at making Riverway a great course for Burnaby residents, and those beyond, to enjoy.
