SFU takes win for best post-secondary education Since opening its doors on Burnaby Mountain in 1965, Simon Fraser University has become Canada’s leading comprehensive university (according to the Maclean’s magazine annual university rankings). SFU attracts 37,000 students each year, has more than 170,000 alumni, and employs approximately 7,500 faculty and staff. By engaging and working with its communities, SFU strives to generate real change and improve society. In addition to Burnaby campus, campuses inVancouver and Surrey have strengthened community ties across the Lower Mainland, as well as advanced research and innovation, attracting collaborators worldwide. SFU students graduate from eight faculties in science, business, education, environment, health sciences, applied sciences, arts and social sciences, and communication, art and technology.

Students will soon have access to a new Student Union Building, while SFU’s athletic teams, which are the only Canadian post-secondary teams to compete in the National Collegiate Athletic Association
(NCAA), will benefit from a new $18-million outdoor sports stadium this year. New residences will open on the Burnaby campus this summer, with a second phase of residences under construction that will be move-in ready in 2023. TransLink is also continuing consultation for a gondola up the mountain.

Hart House earns top honours for best wine list Hart House is honoured to be chosen by Burnaby NOW readers as the restaurant with the best wine list. We believe that our popularity in the category reflects the importance we place on top-quality wine as one component of an outstanding dining experience. The goal of Hart House’s wine program is to offer wines that complement Chef Mike Genest’s Mediterranean-style cuisine, thus adding to guests’ enjoyment of their visit to our Burnaby restaurant. Given the flavour palette of the menu, it’s not surprising that wines from Italy, Spain, and France are favourites on the Hart House list. We do, however, have a longstanding commitment to featuring fresh local ingredients in our cuisine, and this enthusiasm for homegrown options carries over to the cellar, where there’s a strong British Columbia pres-
ence, particularly from smaller producers. Hart House is proud to support Dine Out Vancouver and has, over the years, hosted many B.C. wine dinners. It’s Jagmeet Singh for the win as Burnaby’s favourite politician Federal New Democrat Leader Jagmeet Singh has been named best politician in the NOW’s annual Best Of awards. Singh hasn’t been a politician in Burnaby for that long, but he has gained fans after moving here to run in the Burnaby South byelection and then the 2019 federal election. The Burnaby MP is a lawyer and an avid cyclist. He’s also a published author with the publication of his book, Love & Courage: My Story of Family, Resilience, and Overcoming the Unexpected, which came out in spring 2019. The title comes from a viral moment during Singh’s campaign for NDP leader, in which Singh responded to a heckler by saying Canadians must respond to hate with “love and courage.”
“This book is the story of my family and my personal experiences growing up – sometimes difficult ones. I often felt alone, unworthy, ashamed,” Singh said.
An education should help young people get ahead, not leave them further behind.
“I hope this book helps some people feel less alone and know that they deserve love and happiness, no matter what they’ve gone through.” Much of Singh’s popu-
larity lies with young people, a demographic he tried to appeal to in March by pledging that an NDP government would cancel up to $20,000 in tuition. Singh announced he would also freeze federal student loan payments until the COVID-19 pandemic winds down and eliminate interest on student debt if elected. “Young people are making student loan payments the size of mortgage payments — spending years under crushing debt, not able to get ahead. And the COVID-19 pandemic only made matters worse,” he said at the party’s virtual youth convention. “An education should help young people get ahead, not leave them further behind.”

Peaked Pies is your favourite new restaurant When a Peaked Pies customer gets up to the front to order a pie, coowner Kerri Jones asks them the same simple question. “Do you want that peaked?” Getting it “peaked” means having mashed potato, mushy green peas and gravy heaped on.
People will be standing in line and see it get ‘peaked’ and they’re like, ‘yes, please.’

ings St. in the Heights neighbourhood was named best new restaurant in our Best Of Burnaby competition. The new business has about a dozen different pies to choose from, including the traditional Aussie version, beef curry, vegetable, lentil, steak, butter chicken and the “hopper” made from ground kangaroo.Then you just say “yes” to the peaked and away you go. Peaked Pies also offers breakfast versions, plus an array of freshly baked desserts and coffees. According to the company, the crust for the pie is made from grass-fed butter and the gravy also comes in a vegetarian option. Peaked Pies started about seven years ago with a location in Whistler before adding one in Vancouver’s West End. The Burnaby Heights location was supposed to open earlier than it did in 2020, but then the COVID-19 pandemic de-

and open a space when you have to limit the contractors doing the work to a different one each day. Then there was the
months of waiting for B.C. to reopen restaurants last summer, all while your costs mounts without revenue coming in.
But once it did open, Peaked Pies has done a bustling business and is here to stay.

Dixon Transition Society tops in community service Serving the community since 1973, Dixon Transition Society helps to reduce the impact of domestic violence by providing a safe haven for women and children. We are proud to have been named best community service organization in the Best Of Burnaby project. Our transitional housing programs, counselling and
outreach services form a continuum of care to help women and children live a thriving life free from violence. Our work is essential year-round and is critical now more than ever in times of economic uncertainty, anxiety caused by quarantine, and support services operating at a reduced capacity. industry-wide at various human and social service organizations.These effects were observed by Dixon as well; between April and September of 2020, Dixon received 1,042 calls for space at our transition house and second-stage housing, of which 982 (94%) women and their children that were in desperate need of our services had to be turned away due to a lack of space and resources. Although the pandemic has caused a rapid increase in demand for our services, Dixon is grateful to all our sponsors, donors, board members, staff and supporters who are working tirelessly to help women through the most difficult times of their lives. “I want to thank all of you for the valuable contributions that you make both individually and collectively to address the issue of violence against women in our community.Without your consis-
