Bear nabbed near city school

BEAR GONE:

Problem bear had to be euthanized after being captured

A black bear roamed the area of Cascade Heights Elementary near Burnaby Hospital on Monday afternoon. Police and a conservation officer chased it up a tree, and it was shot down with a tranquilizer gun. After finding it had gotten used to feeding on garbage, the conservation officer service decided to euthanize the bear Monday afternoon.

A black bear that kept students at a Burnaby elementary school past the bell on Monday has been killed by the B.C. Conservation Officer Service because of a history of problem behaviour. The 200-pound male bear wandered to within less than half a block of Cascade Heights Elementary School, near Burnaby Hospital, sometime after 1 p.m., triggering a barrage of calls from concerned parents and eventually a shelter-in-place order. “It definitely added something to our day,” principal Anthony Yam told the NOW. Police and conservation officer

Clayton Debruin treed the threeyear-old bruin at 4091 Fir St. at about 3 p.m., and Debruin shot it with a tranquilizer dart. The bear fell out of the tree after a few minutes, breaking through the roof of a shed on the way down. Before taking it away in a bear trailer, Debruin took the time to show the unconscious bear to onlookers, including some neighbourhood kids. Students at Cascade Heights never got to see the bear and had

to stay at school until about 3:20 p.m., according toYam. “They were very excited about the possibility of a bear being around,” he said. Yam, who has only been at the school for about a year, said staff told him they had never encountered a bear at the school before. “I’m thinking, where around here is there enough greenspace for a bear to live? I’m thinking, where could it have come from? I have no idea,” he said.

After looking into recent reports, Debruin said it looked like the bear had come from the Deer Lake area and had been pressing farther into Vancouver, triggering nine garbage and compost complaints in the last two weeks. It had been spotted wandering under the Grandview overpass over Boundary Road and strolling through a Chevron gas station at Grandview and Boundary in broad daylight. “Unfortunately we learned that

he’d been into quite a bit of trouble,” Debruin said. Once hooked on human food sources, bears will return to them after relocation, even if they have to travel hundreds of kilometres, Debruin said, so the conservation service had no choice but to destroy the bear. “It’s very tough, especially when we have a healthy bear,” he said.

‘The health of our planet affects everyone’ Continued from page 1 it’s still unknown how B.C.’s new minority government will affect the project. The B.C. Greens and the NDP have vowed to stop it. There are also numerous lawsuits against Trans Mountain, including a challenge by the City of Burnaby in the Federal Court of Appeal and numerous cases involving First Nations groups. “Investors are currently looking at Kinder Morgan and we’re trying to say to them, ‘This is not a sustainable or worthy investment,’” said Harwood. “This pipeline will not be built. We are also pushing a coalition between the NDP and the Greens, and to stick to their promise against Kinder Morgan. If they’re not going to make it happen, then the indigenous and those who are working in solidarity will.” Ali Hounsell, a Trans Mountain spokesperson, issued a statement Monday, acknowledging the demonstration. “Kinder Morgan is monitoring the situation to ensure those on site are exercising their views in a respectful manner and not adversely impacting our operations or the community,” she said. “Our top priority is the safety of all the individuals on site, as well as the integrity of our facilities and assets.” Harwood, who sang as she was carried away by police, said she was protesting for the people and the land. “I’m even here for the CEO of Kinder Morgan because it doesn’t matter what your skin colour is, the health of our planet affects everyone.”

Kinder Morgan makes final investment decision By Tereza Verenca

tverenca@burnabynow.com

It’s full steam ahead for the Trans Mountain expansion project. Kinder Morgan announced last week that it’s proceeding with the

$7.4-billion pipeline as long as it secures $1.75 billion through an initial public offering (IPO). The company released 103 million shares of common stock for $17 apiece, with the IPO ending today (May 31). The IPO is one of the largest

ever in Canada and Kinder Morgan is confident all the money will be raised, according to spokesman Dave Conover. The timing of the IPO, issued at a time when B.C. has its first minority government in 65 years, is purely coincidental, he said.

“When we first started this project four years ago, who knew? But we put a clause in all the shipper agreements that said we had until end of month to make a final investment decision, and if we didn’t do it by then, then they (the shippers) were no longer responsible

for reimbursing any of the development costs of the project, which as you might imagine are quite large,” Conover told the NOW. “Those agreements were drafted before the last election in 2013.” Continued on page 4

City now Kinder Morgan moves ahead with pipeline Continued from page 3 The Edmonton-to-Burnaby pipeline received federal approval last November, and shortly after, Premier Christy Clark announced Kinder Morgan had met its five conditions. But the May 9 election resulted in the B.C. Greens holding the balance of power. Leader Andrew Weaver has vowed to stop the pipeline. Conover said Kinder Morgan isn’t worried about a minority government because it is a federally approved project. “We’re moving forward with permitting and we expect it to be not an issue. Obviously, there are challenges out there, legal challenges, but we’ll work through all that.We expect to be on track for getting all our required permits, fulfilling all our 157 conditions and moving forward with

construction this fall. We’re confident we can address any safety or construction or operational concern,” he said. Grand Chief Stewart Phillip, president of the Union of British Columbia Indian Chiefs, issued a statement, saying Kinder Morgan is facing “determined opposition,” 19 lawsuits and a majority of opposed MLAs. “This company was founded from the ashes and rubble of Enron, a company synonymous with scandal, corporate fraud and bankruptcy,” Phillip said in a press release. “Today, these same reckless cowboys are trying to convince gullible investors to plow cash into a pipeline they know will never be built.” Construction is expected to start in September with a completion date of December 2019.

WATERMAIN FLUSHING

Donor offers $300,000 to Wildlife Rescue group

The City Engineering Department will be commencing its annual program of flushing and cleaning watermains on February 9th 2017 to May 31st 2017.

Money will cover half the cost of new hospital facility Tereza Verenca

tverenca@burnabynow.com

An anonymous donor has offered to cover half the cost of what it’ll take to replace the gutted out animal hospital at the Wildlife Rescue Association of B.C. Last month, the NOW reported on how the building was in disrepair because of the harsh winter. Staff had to deal with water damage, wood rot and a rat infestation. At the time, the association’s board of directors was still deciding on the hospital’s fate, and whether to renovate it or tear it down completely and bring in a modular unit. Executive director Coleen Doucette says the organization has decided to go with the latter. She says the association is waiting on approvals from Metro Vancouver and the whole project is es-

timated to cost $600,000. “We do have a donor who’s willing to (give) half of that so we can do a matching campaign,” she says. “We’re really hopeful that since we have half the money available to us, that we’ll be able to raise the money at the same time we’re waiting for the building permits to go through and then be ready to move on it.” The goal is to have the modular unit in place by late fall or early winter. In April, the wildlife rehab centre put a call out to the community in hopes of raising $50,000 to continue operations through the summer. The money (and more) was raised in less than two weeks. “It was just absolutely amazing. This community rallies around wildlife and the natural world so magnificently,” says Doucette.

The Wildlife Rescue Association of B.C. is set to receive another hefty donation. Daryl Mutz, a Vancouver resident and longtime teacher who died in January 2014, listed the nonprofit as one of four beneficiaries of his estate, which was recently settled, according to a staff report presented to New Westminster city council. While the amount allotted to Wildlife Rescue is unknown, Mutz bequeathed $275,000 to the New Westminster Animal Shelter. Sixty per cent of the wildlife association’s funding comes through planned giving, notes Doucette. “Gifts like this are extremely important to our existence. Really, without these kinds of gifts, we wouldn’t even be around,” she says.

Opinion now OUR VIEW

Christy Clark – at peace and acting classy She didn’t play hide and seek with reporters or their questions. She didn’t take the opportunity to go after her opponents. She wasn’t defensive or dismissive. In fact, when Christy Clark spoke to the media on Tuesday about her plans and her plans for the Liberal Party, she was the epitome of leadership and class. Kudos to her.

She says she’ll take on the position of leader of the Opposition if it comes to that, and she seemed clear that that was a very large possibility in the near future. In fact, she said she will position the legislature for a potential vote of nonconfidence by the end of June. (Now we presume she means this month and not June of 2018.)

She could have strung it out and tested the NDPGreen brotherhood for awhile. She could have, as some pundits have suggested, wreaked a bit of revenge on John Horgan and Andrew Weaver. But she appears to have put the need for a functioning government in B.C. ahead of personal political motivations. And, yes, we already can hear

the pundits saying it’s all a time-stalling act, but we’d like to take her at her word this time because she appeared a bit sad but nonetheless at peace with her new, albeit temporary, position of being the ruling underdog. Perhaps that is where she is most comfortable. She’s often at her best when she’s fighting for a place at the table – and

operating in opposition against a two-man brigade will test those skills. For B.C., in our opinion, this is good. If the taxpayers of B.C. are left with an NDP leader challenged by a Green backseat driver, and facing a tough critic such as Clark, voters may get the best of both worlds. The votes in the legislature will still be close,

forcing, we hope, rational compromises on any number of issues. Voters may witness true dialogue in the legislature after so many years of rubberstamping and short sessions. Perhaps we’re being overly optimistic, but at least for now, we’d like to believe in a kinder more democratic B.C.

MY VIEW KEITH BALDREY

So close and yet so very far apart It’s been noted by many that this past election was the closest one in British Columbian history, yet in some ways it was anything but close. Sure, the overall popular vote was a virtual tie, as just 1,568 votes separated the B.C. Liberals and the NDP. And the two parties almost matched the same seat count: 43 for the B.C. Liberals and 41 for the NDP (while the B.C. Greens grabbed three seats). Pretty darn close. But there were actually 87 separate elections that took place, one in each of the province’s ridings. And from that perspective, not many were close contests at all. In fact, in the vast majority of them – more than 70 – the result was a virtual runaway victory for one of the parties. Just 13 ridings were decided by less than a 10-point difference between the winning candidate and the secondplace finisher. And of those, only five were really close (less than a 1,000-vote difference). How does that compare to the previous election, in 2013?Well, that year there were twice as many ridings that saw less than a 10-point gap, and three times as many ridings decided by less than 1,000 votes. In other words, there were a lot more close “elections” in 2013 than there were this time around. What may explain this lack of drama in most individual ridings is that widening rural-urban divide. When the actual voting results are examined in detail, they show in graphic detail how the ground has shift-

ed politically for both of the major parties. The NDP, for example, grew its support in whopping numbers in much of MetroVancouver: gaining more than 17,000 new voters in the Surrey ridings, more than 20,000 inVancouver, more than 10,000 in the Tri-Cities and almost 6,000 in Burnaby. And in the normally B.C. Liberal stronghold of Richmond, the NDP vote went up by more than 10,000. The B.C. Liberals suffered significant losses in all these locations, especially inVancouver where their support dropped by about 10,000 voters overall. Outside of urban MetroVancouver, however, the numbers are largely reversed. In the Okanagan, the B.C. Liberals grew their vote by 27,000 or so and boosted it by more than 7,000 in the Central Interior and the North. The NDP, meanwhile, lost almost 10,000 voters in both regions. It’s clear the Green party boosted its vote in many of these areas, but that only partly explains the big shift. This election seems to have entrenched the B.C. Liberal Party as the representative of rural and regional parts of B.C. And the NDP has morphed into an urban and suburban party with little connection to the rest of the province (save Vancouver Island and the north coast).Yes, it was a super-tight election. But in so many ways it wasn’t, and I’m not sure that’s entirely healthful in the long term. Keith Baldrey is chief political reporter for Global B.C.

that over the years our consumption of fresh water per capita has steadily decreased. The overall consumption may well have marginally increased, but that was purely due to our larger population increase. The fault lies not with the public – but with our planners and politicians who have idly let this happen. How can some desert areas in the world – for example the French, which built a large desalination plant for Israel – supply sufficient water for their needs and at a price per unit volume that competes with ours, while we, living in a rainforest, cannot? It defies belief! Stop this social engineering and plan properly for our future generations. Corrie Kost, by email

Dear Editor: Re: City owed it to citizens to fight pipeline, Our View, Burnaby NOW, May 26. Your editors and the Burnaby Board of Trade have taken a responsible position opposing the TMX project. Most British Columbians are aware of the dreadful risks of the Trans Mountain expansion project: collision or grounding of a giant tanker, absence of cleanup methods, and tank farm ruptures during the earthquake which is probable during the life of the TMX pipeline, and stand opposed to the project on these very reasonable grounds. The fact that we have come to this point is evidence of the political betrayal by the Trudeau cabinet, the cavalier attitude of the Clark government towards the public interest, the obvious bias of a National Energy Board decision created by the Harper government, and behind all these, the smell of oil money wafting around too many of our elected officials. When will we have senior levels of government that are clean? J. Thornton, by email

Burnaby girls earn honours for wildlife app Cornelia Naylor

cnaylor@burnabynow.com

With bears, cougars and coyotes once again wandering around Burnaby neighbourhoods, wouldn’t it be handy to have a mobile app that alerts people to wildlife sightings in their area while simultaneously generating species-specific safety tips? Look no further than the Wildlife Alert Reporting

This helps keep both animals and humans safe

App (WARA) – created by a pair of entrepreneurial, animal-loving girls at Cameron Elementary School. Twelve-year-old Isadora Vieytes and 11-year-old Carina Chen (a.k.a. the Tech Turtles) developed the prototype for Technovation, a global tech competition that challenges girls around the

world to identify a problem, create a mobile app to solve it, code the app, make a business plan and pitch the whole thing to expert judges. Using a Wildsafe B.C. data file of sightings reported to the B.C. Conservation Officer Service,WARA allows users to define a radius on Google maps and get notifications about wildlife sightings within that radius. “When users receive WARA’s notifications, they can avoid the area as well as ensure that their food and garbage are safely stored away,” states the girls’ online description of the project. “This helps keep both animals and humans safe.” The app impressed virtual judges from around the world and was picked to be one of Canada’s 10 Technovation semifinalists in the junior division. After another round of online judging, finalists will be picked in mid-June and travel to San Francisco in August to compete against girls from around the globe.

The prototype has also impressed wildlife advocates closer to home.

“It’s a great thing that they came up with,” said provincial coordinator for

BurnabY !

Wildsafe B.C. Frank Ritcey, who collaborated with the girls on the project.

Communitynow Technovation helps girls to combat stereotyping Continued from page 9 users to wildlife sightings via email, but the Tech Turtles’ app has made that information mobile. “What it does is it puts that directly onto your smartphone,” Ritcey said, “so if you’re walking into a neighbourhood and you get to within however many metres of where wildlife was reported, it will buzz the phone and tell you, ‘Hey, you’re coming into this area. This is what you should do to be safe around wildlife.’ The concept is really really sound. Eventually, it will be developed to the point where it’ll be something that will be available to everyone.” The girls have worked on the project since November, with their efforts ramping up in the final few weeks. “It was such a huge project that they were working sometimes four-and-a-half hours a day just here, and then they would go home and work more,” said Cameron teacher Micheline Kamber, who coaches the girls along with Cameron

mom and tech entrepreneur Erika Castellanos. For Chen and Vieytes, the effort was worth it. “I was a bit stressed out at times, but then when we finished the app, I felt amazing,” Chen said. GIRLS ONLY Technovation, which has been designed to narrow the gender gap in technology, is good for girls, according to Kamber. Too often the focus of computer science activities in schools is geared towards

role-playing video games, she said, something that doesn’t capture the imagination of a lot of girls.

Since I joined Technovation, I want to help the world more.

Technovation, meanwhile, challenges them to learn and apply comput-

er skills to solve real-world problems. That has struck a chord with the Tech Turtles. “Since I joined Technovation, I want to help the world more,” Chen said. Vieytes is interested in following in her mother’s footsteps and possibly combining a career in computers and policing. For Vieytes,Technovation’s girls-only setting also gives girls a chance to transcend the idea – still common among their male peers – that girls aren’t good at computers. “I see stereotyping in my class all the time,” she said. “If a bunch of boys join Technovation, girls are going to run off.” Girls’ participation in the school’s coed Kids Can Code program seem to bear her out, according to Kamber. The Cameron teacher said the school left five of the program’s 10 spots open for girls but couldn’t fill them because not enough girls signed up. Technovation, mean-

while, attracted six girls this year. Cameron’s other Technovation team, the Tech Girls, who were featured in a NOW story last year, also made it into the semifinal round, with an app that promotes nutrition and wellness for kids. “It’s sort of like the Pokémon GO idea,” Kamber said, but instead of catching Pokémon they’re catching healthy food.” This year’s Tech Girls are

Jasmine Shim, 11, JessicaYe, 10, Barbara Castano, 11, and Liya Li, 10. For Kamber, the extracurricular hours she and Castellanos put into coaching the next generation of female techies are well worth it. “Both of us are women in computer science and we want to encourage girls to follow these paths. These are great careers to have,” she said.

Rain didn’t stop about 55 people from showing up to the Save the Mothers Walk on May 13. The five-kilometre trek around Central Park raised money for the charity, whose mission is to reduce the number of preventable infant and mother deaths in underdeveloped countries. They do this by training local leaders to become change makers in their own communities, helping hospitals meet standards of care for safe childbirth, and doing community outreach, notes a press release. Hellen Muuo of Kenya, who’s currently studying in Canada and has two children, attended the walk. She was privileged enough to have medical insurance to cover her hospital bills when she went into labour. “The reason I participated in the walk is because I wanted to help sup-

a panel discussion from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Speakers will talk about international and local issues affecting refugees in Canada. Laya Behbahani, a sessional lecturer for SFU’s labour studies who researches human rights violations of migrants in the Middle East, will be chatting about the impact of the refugee crisis on human trafficking in the Gulf countries. “I think we’re so conditioned towards thinking about whether or not we can handle the refugee crisis, how many people we can take, whether we have the resources,” says Behbahani. “That’s all good, and I agree with that completely because our resources are limited, however, we have to look at it from the perspective that if we don’t open our doors ... the alternative is that a lot of these kids are now being recruited by ISIS and are being offered, for example, amenities, food, shelter, clothing, and these are going to be the next

generation of potential terrorists.” Another panelist will be James Grunau, executive director of Journey Home Community, an association serving refugee claimant families. Registration is required by calling 604-436-5400 or by visiting bpl.bc.ca/events. The library is at 6100 Willingdon Ave. DROP IN FOR COFFEE Burnaby residents are in-

Retirement income workshops on at McGill Tereza Verenca

tverenca@burnabynow.com

Living on a retirement income can be challenging for most seniors, especially those living in the Lower Mainland where the cost of living is high. On Wednesday, June 14, the McGill library branch is hosting a workshop on how to get by financially during the golden years. Participants will: identify the challenges of living on

a retirement income; take stock of their financial situation (income, assets, liabilities, debts and monthly expenses); identify ways to increase their income and decrease their expenses; identify ways to save money on housing, transportation, health, food, utilities and entertainment; recognize if family and friends are costing them money; and more. “This is a 90-minute workshop that is fun and interactive,” reads an online

write-up. “We take a graband-go approach – grab an idea or two and go try it.” Attendees will walk away with ideas, resources and the full curriculum upon request. The workshop is free, but space is limited. Register online at bpl.bc.ca./events, in person at the library (4595 Albert St.) or by calling 604-299-8955.

Volunteer with Burnaby Community Services Burnaby Community Services is looking for seniors who’d like to volunteer for its Welcoming Seniors’ Spaces program. The program aims to connect seniors with seniors who may be living in isolation, specifically in the Edmonds and Heights neighbourhoods. “We train them here and we basically send them out in the community,” says program manager Preet Sahota, adding there’s about 16 hours of training beforehand.Topics include communication skills, causes and consequences of senior isolation, recognizing and managing dementia, cultural diversity and elder abuse. Once connected, volunteers take the seniors to the partner sites, where they can connect with services and people their own age. In this

case, Burnaby Community Services has teamed up with the Tommy Douglas library branch and the Confederation Seniors’ Centre. Finding volunteers who are seniors has been difficult, says Sahota, because the organization is one of eight running the program in Burnaby. “There’s only so many seniors that want to become volunteers,” she says. Sahota notes other challenges have been seniors not having the transportation to get to and from the training

sessions. There are also language barriers. “Even though we’re looking for a diverse group of seniors, seniors do not reach out to us because they assume that in a western population, they’re not going to be welcomed to participate,” says Sahota. The next training session is set for mid-July. Anyone interested in participating is asked to call 604-292-3909 or email preet@bbyservices. ca. – TerezaVerenca

Hats Off Festival takes to the streets

One of Burnaby’s favourite traditions returns this weekend as the Burnaby Heights pulls out all the stops for Hats Off Day. The event started in 1989 as a chance for business owners to doff their hats in gratitude to customers and people living in the community, and today it’s the largest street festival in Burnaby with about 60,000 visitors. Held on the first Saturday of June every year, Hastings Street closes down to traffic from Boundary Road to Gamma for a day that begins with a parade and transitions into an all-out street party complete with entertainment, food, fun and games as well as a show & shine display of vintage vehicles.

This year, the parade starts at 9 a.m., beginning at Beta Avenue, and will feature floats and costumed participants from Burnaby’s non-profit organizations, community groups, Heights-based businesses, schools and sponsors. A Family

Fun Dash is scheduled for 9:30 a.m., whereby families engage in a three-block race with other families and the $5 entry fee goes to the Burnaby Firefighters Charitable Society. Festivities end at 4 p.m.

Hats Off Day Saturday, June 3rd, 2017 “On behalf of Burnaby City Council, I extend my best wishes to the many community volunteers who make Hats Off Day such a success.”

To add some spirit to the event, each year features a different theme. Last year’s jungle theme brought out Tarzan and Jane, as well as Indiana Jones and a “boulder” chasing him throughout the parade. This year, the event falls on June 3 and the new theme is the Great Canadian Outdoors.

Family begins Fun Dash at 9:30 am Parade begins at 10am Street Show &Festival and S hi until 4pne lasts m

Mayor Derek Corrigan and City Councillors:

“Ever since we introduced themes for Hats Off Day, there is so much enthusiasm for making our parade feel and look a little bit different each year,” Isabel Kolic, executive director of the Heights Merchants Association, said in a news release. “A friendly competition is a great way to spur on people’s creativity. The spectators and community really appreciate the effort put in by participating groups to stand out from the crowd.”

KIMONO CULTURE WHAT’S UP? Kimono Culture: The Beauty of Japanese Culture Viewed Through the Lens of Kimono is an ongoing exhibition at the Nikkei National Museum, running until Sept. 3. WHAT’S IT ALL ABOUT? The exhibit explores the beauty of Japanese culture through the lens of kimono - the traditional Japanese garb that has become ubiquitous inspiration for Western fashion. “In Japan, it is steeped in culture, which is deeply rooted in the core esthetic sense of Japanese life,” a press release notes. The exhibition is curated by Hitomi Harama, a Victoria resident who comes from a family of kimono artisans and collectors from Japan. “Exhibit highlights will illuminate the philosophy of kimono: in harmony with nature, coordination with different climate and season, attention to detail,”

the release explains. Visitors can also learn about the art of kimono: its craft and design, its dyeing and weaving techniques and patterns, its design motifs, plus its ecological aspects – the structure of kimono and

the use of textile materials. WHERE AND WHEN? The exhibition is underway at Nikkei National Museum, 6688 Southoaks Cres. It continues until Sept. 20, and there are number of other special events along the way. There’s a kimono history talk on June 24 at 2 p.m.; a shibori (pleat and bind) dyeing workshop on July 23 at 2 p.m.; a kogin zashi (Japanese embroidery)

workshop on Aug. 19 at 2 p.m.; and an osaikumono (small kimono fabric craft) workshop on Aug. 26 at 1:30 p.m. TELL ME MORE The museum is open Tuesday through Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., and admission is by donation. See www.nikkeiplace.org for more details. – Julie MacLellan

North soccer girls aim to be hosts with the most Vikings look to wrap up high school soccer season with a strong push at AAA provincials this week

Dan Olson

dolson@burnabynow.com

The Burnaby North Vikings are right where they want to be, and ready to play like they can. As hosts of the B.C. High School AAA senior girls soccer championships, the Vikings knew all along this was how their season would go – starting Wednesday with a pair of games against tough competitors. What’s still to be determined is where they end up and how they

celebrate. Burnaby North head coach Deborah Peters feels that while her squad may have had a predetermined destiny when it came to playing at the provincials, they also are good enough to be there as challengers. “We did finish first in our league and third in the zone, so we have a bit of clout,” said Peters. “We won’t be a pushover.” They’ve been preparing for this for more than a few months, and as hosts they won’t have the abil-

ity to tune out the usual distractions so easily. Peters is concerned some of her players will try to run back to school between their opening games today (Wednesday – 11 a.m. against Robert McMath, and 2:45 p.m. against Clayton Heights). She isn’t too worried about how prepared they are once the whistle blows. “This team, minus the Grade 8s and 9s, were in the provincials two years ago in Victoria,” Peters said. “We finished last, but we had

some tough injuries and a couple of (High Performance League player) issues.” This year, the club has one HPL player who has been advised by her Mountain United FC coach that she would not start that team’s next game if she misses her scheduled practice. Another player is battling mononucluosis. While their last game was nearly three weeks ago when they fell 3-1 to zone champion Handsworth, Peters is pleased with the makeup of this year’s squad, which in-

cludes four players from Grade 8 and 9, a handful of Grade 10s as well as a core group of seniors. “The girls are very supportive of each other, they get along real well,” she said. “When you have such an age gap sometimes there’s divisions, but there is no hierarchy with this team.” In the opening round, which concludes Thursday with a match against Centennial (9 a.m.), McMath is the only opponent they’ve previously faced. Lakers hold on to beat Burrards

Penney backstops Burnaby past Maple Ridge for first win in 2017 Dan Olson

dolson@burnabynow.com

A fresh coalition came together to make a bold statement on Sunday. And the hope is it will eventually shake the foundations in Victoria and New Westminster. No, Sunday’s act had nothing to do with provincial politics, but in the more mature, less treacherous arena known as the Western Lacrosse Association. The cool-as-a-cucumber netminding of Eric Penney and sharp shooting of Eli McLaughlin were major pieces to the Burnaby Lakers’ first win of the season, as they bumped off the defending league champion Maple Ridge Burrards 9-5. Penney, acquired last month in a trade with New West, kicked out 47 shots in his debut in green, while McLaughlin made his early arrival memorable, scoring four times in a well-rounded victory. For new head coach Jim Milligan, the result was an impressive effort coming against a tough opponent. “It’s tough to win (in Maple Ridge). It’s a very good team, and if we can play like that the majority of nights we will have a good chance of coming out on a winning end,” said Milligan. Outshot 52-42, Burnaby didn’t waiver when pressed by an amped up Burrards lineup, playing in their home opener. While they trailed briefly in the early going, the Lakers took the reins on some fine offensive work by Scott Jones and Jackson Decker in the first period,

then fended off Maple Ridge’s rally cry. McLaughlin second period shorthanded effort made it 6-4, while the defence and Penney slammed the door. Maple Ridge closed the gap early in the third with a shortman marker of their own, but McLaughlin tallied twice within a three-minute span to give Burnaby some breathing room. “I felt pretty good, got four goals and helped the boys win,” said McLaughlin, who wrapped up his third year with the National Lacrosse League’s Colorado Mammoth two weeks ago. “It was nice to get a win on a Sunday, so nothing was wasted.” Jason Jones tallied a pair, with Shaun Dhaliwal counting the other goal. It followed a tough 11-6 loss Friday in Victoria, where the other 2016 WLA finalists rallied with five straight goals in the second period to erase a 5-3 Lakers lead. “We got into some penalty trouble (in Victoria), which we had today in the second period, and Victoria capitalized on it,” said Milligan. Victoria got four-goal efforts from Rhys Duch and Corey Small, firing 54 shots at Burnaby’s Zak Boychuk. Jason and Scott Jones each potted a pair, while Dane Stevens and Justin Salt added singles. Contributing three assists in his debut with Burnaby was Cam Milligan, despite playing with what was later diagnosed as pneumonia. Burnaby’s next test is Friday, 7 p.m. when they host the Nanaimo Timbermen at the Bill Copeland Sports Centre.

Galaxy near perfect in cup run Dan Olson

In just over a month’s time, the Wesburn Galaxy face their biggest test of the soccer season. But from the road already travelled, the next step should feel very familiar for the under-14 boys squad. After vaulting to the top of the pile over a long grind of a soccer season – culminating with a 2-0 win over cross-town rival South Burnaby in the Coastal Cup B final – the group enters the final stage eager to impress. “It has been an exceptional year

for our team from the beginning,” remarked head coach Aaron Johnson. “This group of boys gets along amazingly well together on and off the field and has done so since the team’s inception last spring. We have dominated in league play at the gold level and through the various cup competitions we have entered.” In fact, the lone blemish to their record came in the regular season to South Burnaby, and provided ammunition when it came to their showdown earlier this month. Thats when Wesburn delivered a clinical performance, taking a 1-0

lead on striker Haris Hussaini’s tally just 10 minutes into the contest. It remained a one-goal game until Bojan Kos sealed the victory late. “Playing against (South Burnaby) is a derby match for us since we’re both Burnaby teams, we play them several times over the year, and the games are always close,” said Johnson. “Many of the players know each other from school and have grown up playing with and against each other. The games are always emotional.” Galaxy netminder Kevin Oliver came up huge with a couple of big Continued on page 40

Sportsnow Comets slugger delivers The Mayville State University Comets men’s baseball team was eliminated from the NAIA national championship tournament last week when they fell 4-2 to the College of Idaho. Mayville wrapped up the season with a 49-12 record, ranked 22nd in the college circuit. A day earlier, the Comets out-hit Campbellsville University but dropped a 3-2 decision in the doubleknockout tourney. Burnaby’s Taylor Lawrence swatted a two-run double to give the Comets a temporary 2-1 lead. Campbellsville countered with two in the bottom of the ninth to walk off with the win. Lawrence ended his Comets’ career with a .338 batting average and a slugging percentage of .620. Prior to making the jump to Mayville, Lawrence was a standout with the Douglas College Royals.

Coastal win propels Wesburn to B.C.s

Continued from page 39 stops to clinch the win. Getting to the Coastal Cup final saw Wesburn beat Abbotsford 1-0, then slipped past North Delta 2-1 in the quarterfinals. They advanced to the final with a 2-0 decision over Campbell River. The toughest test was the first one, said Johnson. Hussaini’s marker late in the game proved to be the difference against Abby. Against North Delta, the Galaxy struggled to put their best boot forward and found themselves trailing

early. But bounce back they did, and took the game on Lazar Kragulj’s chip-shot late in the match. In Campbell River, Ryan Nagy and Sebastyan Szymanski supplied the offence. Kragulj is considered one of the squad’s veteran leaders, a midfielder who sets the tone with his work ethic. Also supplying leadership are Jeffrey Baldisimo, Koen Johnson, David MacDonald, Jacob Spartano, Justin Tran, Hussaini, Oliver, Nagy and Szymanski. Johnson feels they are ready for any challenge that

comes their way. “The provincials will be something new for these boys and I think the focus will be on doing what we’ve done in the past that has brought us success,” the coach said. “I’m confident that if we play our game and have fun we will have a good chance of success.” The provincials are slated for the first week in July in Vernon. The Galaxy roster is: Jeffrey Baldisimo, Evan Beckers, Jasman Hehar, Haris Hussaini, Koen Johnson, Bojan Kos, Lazar Kragulj,

Vikings to play underdog role

Continued from page 39 opening UBC tourney, the Richmond school eked out a 1-0 win over the Vikings. In their most recent game, a zone playoff match against Handsworth, Burnaby held a 1-0 lead at the half before injuries and a shortened bench created an opening that the North Shore team took advantage of in a 3-1 decision. Burnaby North’s league win over the Hyacks was a full-team effort, with stellar efforts from Ashley Bristow, Michaela Filippelli and Alyssa Sommer.

Although they are slotted in a tough pool, Peters believes they can advance to the next round if they play as they’ve shown during the season. “I would say my hope is top-8 (finish), but the girls, funny enough, are saying the top-12, just so they finish higher than the (Burnaby North senior) boys did,” said Peters, who coached the boys last fall. “We’re good enough to be here.” The tourney runs until Friday, with the final slated for 11:30 a.m. All games are at the Burnaby Lake West sports complex.

åW HITE SPOT RESTAURANTS Set sail on the NEW W.S. Legendary! What is the new White Spot Kids Program? After serving over 25 million Pirate Paks since 1968, White Spot has brought its iconic ship into the digital age with the launch of their new 3D augmented reality Kids Program. The interactive Pirate Pak features a fresh cast of animated characters and revamped treasure map, plus the new W.S. Legendary pirate ship that allows kids of all ages to join the crew on their legendary (mis)adventures! How can kids interact with the new Pirate Pak? They can interact with the new Pirate Pak through our WS Kids app on their mobile device. Using SmartLenz technology the camera will interact with the pirate ship and treasure map by hovering over the 3D digital markers. Kids can play games, make music, read stories, watch videos and interact with the characters. What kind of characters can kids expect to meet? Aboard the W.S. Legendary they will meet the dashing, daring and dauntless Captain Beak Rogers who has assembled a rag-tag crew called the ‘Cluckaneers’. The crew features the quick-witted Penny Poulet (who is even quicker with her flipper) and messy first mate Drumstick Nick – a no-napkin, never-ceasing nibbler. They are always hungry for new adventures! What games can kids play on this new app? Kids of all ages, and the young-at-heart, can join the ‘Cluckaneers’ in action-packed games like Doubloon Debacle, Bookadoodle Boom, Pirate Ship Battle and Cannon Bowling. They can also collect medallions and hunt for tasty treasure in the mysterious ‘Cluckaneer Cove’. There are over 10 different activities for kids to engage with and the app will be automatically updated with the latest seaworthy adventures. How do you download the WS Kids app and start playing? You can download the free WS Kids app on IOS or Android devices through the App Store or Google Play by searching WS Kids. The games don’t require internet access once the app has been downloaded and a printable version of the interactive map can also be downloaded from the White Spot website. Visit whitespot.ca/kids for full details.
