Ex-KGB agent has left the country

After six years of living in a church to avoid deportation, former Burnaby resident and ex-KGB agent Mikhail Lennikov has left the country.

Lennikov’s immigration lawyer, Hadayt Nazami, confirmed with the NOW that he’s left Canada but could not confirm he was headed for Russia.

“He’s no longer in the country,” Nazami told the NOW. “It’s a deportation but not in the regular sense of the word….Techni-

cally of course it’s a deportation, but it was a negotiated settlement, so it was a smooth departure.”

According to Nazami, Lennikov’s wife and son are still in Canada, and they’ve applied for their Canadian citizenship, although he was unsure if they’ve received it yet.

Nazami said Lennikov still wants to fight the order to leave the country.

“He might very well come back depend-

ing on the outcome of his application. He has a number of applications outstanding,” he said. “If he wants to apply from overseas, he can file new applications. He could file a humanitarian application, sponsorship application, registered visa applications.

Whether or not they accept it is another issue.”

There are few pleasures remembered as fondly as dining al fresco during the summer, whether it’s a family picnic, a wedding or an ice-cream cone at the beach.

Tourism Burnaby is taking that experience to the next level with its Small Plates on the Lake event this month.

Three popular Burnaby restaurants – Hart House Restaurant, Reflect Social Dining + Lounge, and ebo Restaurant – will offer small servings of their specialities while overlooking Deer Lake Park , as the Jerry Boey jazz trio serenades those attending the Aug. 27 event.

Tourism Burnaby decided on the event as a way to showcase both the wonderful food available in the city,

and Burnaby’s hidden gem – Deer Lake Park.

“The small plates was something we wanted to create as part of an exposure for Deer Lake Park,” Nancy Small,Tourism Burnaby’s executive director, told the NOW. “Some people don’t want it to be discovered, but I do. It really is quite special there.

There’s something quite magical about being in the middle of a city and you’re on a lake on a rowboat.You know, it’s quite unique.”

The event is being held on the south plaza by the Shadbolt Centre for the Arts, with the park and lake just down the hill.

“It’s going to be quite stunning,” she said.

Tourism Burnaby supports and promotes a number of events at the park, she said, including the recent Burnaby Blues + Roots Festival.

The jazz trio, which plays events throughout the region, will give the event a relaxed air, Small said.

“We just wanted to add to the ambience,” she said.

“We think live music really helps to do that.”

The goal is to see the Small Plates on the Lake event become an annual affair, she said.

“You have to start somewhere, and we really want this to become an annual thing,” Small said. “We hope it can get bigger than just the three restaurants, but we’re excited about the three restaurants that we have on board.”

They hope to have about 150 to 200 guests during the inaugural event, she added.

The event was inspired by others, such as the Pemberton Longtable Dinner and local food truck festivals, according to Small.

“It’s kind of a combination of a bunch of different things we’ve seen,” she said.

The event is part of Tourism Burnaby’s current culinary initiative.The other two aspects of the initiative are the new Passport to Food, being sent out to 40,000 homes in the city, and the Taste of Burnaby event taking place at the end of September.

Small hopes the events will attract both locals and people from our neighbouring communities.

“We want them to kind of rediscover or discover what Burnaby has to offer,” she said.

Small Plates on the Lake takes place at twilight on Saturday, Aug. 27.Tickets are $55 each and include a beer or wine sampler. For more information, go to www.tourismburnaby.com/ smallplatesburnaby.

Casino gets longer liquor hours The City of Burnaby has approved changes to the hours the Grand Villa Casino can serve liquor.

While the city didn’t give the casino exactly what it wanted – the casino’s appli-

cation proposed liquor service from 9 a.m. to 4 a.m., seven days a week – council did agree to up the hours.

The casino was licensed to serve alcohol between 11 a.m. and 2 a.m., seven days

a week. Now the hours are changing on Fridays and Saturdays, until 3 a.m.

Council also agreed to let the casino increase capacity from 4,344 people to 4,817 people, primarily because

of seating on the main floor patio next to Personas Restaurant. However, liquor can only be served on all of the patios until 2 a.m. all week long.

Investigators with the provincial police watchdog were in Burnaby last week, but this time they were investigating the conduct of Vancouver police officers.

Around 4 p.m. on Aug. 13, the Independent Investigations Office was notified a man died during an altercation with Vancouver police on South East Marine Drive near Joffre Avenue in Burnaby.

According to the Vancouver Police Department, officers were dispatched to South East Marine Drive, near the border between Burnaby and Vancouver, following reports of a man causing a disturbance in the area.When the first officer arrived and attempted to detain the man, police say he became agitated and more officers were sent to

the scene.

Officers tried to subdue the man, but their attempts failed and an altercation broke out, according to a media release from Vancouver police.

During the altercation, the man, along with six police officers, was injured.

Paramedics attempted to save the man, but he died at the scene.The six officers were treated at hospital.

The Independent Investigations Office was called to the scene, and investigators arrived shortly after 4 p.m.

They canvassed the neighbourhood for some time, and are now trying to determine whether the man’s death was the result of police misconduct.

No other information is available at this time.

Flashers aren’t running amok Flashers are not running rampant in Burnaby despite recent media reports, say Burnaby RCMP. Other media in the Lower Mainland reported there were six incidents of indecent exposure in Burnaby in the span of two days, but there have actually been six flasher reports since the beginning of the month, according to Burnaby RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Daniela

Panesar.

Analysts with the local RCMP detachment are reviewing each file to determine if there’s anything out of the ordinary, Panesar said, adding that it’s not uncommon to have a few public indecency incidents.

Investigators will also be looking for anything that could indicate it’s the same suspect in all six cases.

Building permit revenues growing in Burnaby This year’s building permits to date have brought in more money than in the previous three years, according to a city staff report.

As of July, the city had received $448 million from the 897 permits it has issued.Though more permits were issued in 2012 – 966

by June 30 – they brought in less money; only $238 million.

Of the 897 permits issued, 244 were for commercial buildings, 228 were for single-family homes (164 of

those were for new builds), and 223 were for demolitions.

There were also 70 permits for multi-family buildings, with 21 of those for new builds.

As of June 30, there were permits issued for 164 new single-family dwelling units, 52 duplexes, 121 strata units in buildings up to four storeys and 923 strata units in buildings higher than four storeys in 2015.

A former peace officer with the Burnaby RCMP is serving a 14-month jail sentence for stealing a kilogram of cocaine from a police exhibit locker in the spring of 2011.

Gary Read, a longtime special constable once in charge of exhibits in Burnaby, was charged with theft in November 2011 after an exhibit audit at the local RCMP detachment in the spring of 2011 revealed some drugs were unaccounted for.

Read was found guilty in February 2015.

At sentencing this summer, Crown prosecutor Dawn Boblin called for jail term of between 18 months and two years less a day for the former peace officer, while defence lawyer Peter Wilson called for a suspended sentence that would have seen Read serve his time in the community under house arrest.

But B.C. Provincial Court judge Paul Meyers, in his reasons for sentencing, said an actual jail term was necessary as a deterrent to others in positions of trust who might be inclined to steal from the police department.

Water, water, everywhere but not enough to drink – that seems to be the Lower Mainland’s big problem this summer.

Though there would be plenty to drink if we would just manage our water use better, according to the City of Burnaby’s director of engineering, Leon Gous.

“I will say, and this is a problem throughout B.C., the consumption in Metro Vancouver is still something in the order of 450 litres per person per day, compared to the European average of about 200,” he told Burnaby council at a recent meeting. “Even with everyday use of water, we haven’t gotten anywhere near efficient

in the use of water.”

Gous was speaking in response to Coun. Nick Volkow, who had questions about how the region will manage its water when there’s an influx of one million people expected over the next 20 to 30 years.

I think this is going to be the new norm.

“The combination of capacity increase and probably some demand management is what will ultimately get us through the next 25 years,” Gous told him.

Volkow wanted to know if there were plans for Met-

ro Vancouver to increase its reservoir capacity to accommodate the growing population. Gous agreed to look into it.

“I think this is going to be the coming new norm, what we’re experiencing here,” he said, adding he’s head people suggesting water metering as a way to discourage overuse. “I want people to be aware there are issues, and if Metro Vancouver were to increase the capacity, that would be some major engineering work.”

Mayor Derek Corrigan responded to Volkow as well.

“You’re right, it is a capacity issue.We do have additional capacity at the Coquitlam site, and I think they’re avoiding utilizing that because it generates

power,” he said. “We are, I think, tapped into some of our alpine lakes already.

“I doubt very much if maximum capacity is high on the list for Metro Vancouver, but you’re right; as the population grows, it may have to increase,” he added.

According to Corrigan, it was the first time he’d seen the Stage 3 watering restrictions imposed in the region this early in the season.

“I can tell you that for the majority of the year, we’re releasing water, and in fact we’re looking at how to generate power through the re-

Stopping idiocy is just the first step As wildfires continue to rage around the province, Premier Christy Clark is making headlines for saying she wants to see harsher penalties for people who start forest fires.

This statement, perhaps not surprisingly, came after officials said the devastating fire still burning outside of Rock Creek is believed to be human caused.

The fire, which was discovered Aug. 13, was burning over some 3,750 hect-

ares as of press time. And, with a warm, drying trend predicted for the coming few days, fire crews weren’t expecting to get any help from Mother Nature.

Clark isn’t wrong.

People who start forest fires should indeed be penalized heavily.

In fact, it was a full month ago that Forests Minister Steve Thomson announced a review of existing punishments – tapping Prince George-Mack-

enzie MLA Mike Morris (a former RCMP superintendent) to head the review.

Morris said he would look at a number of possible fixes, including higher fines, banning people from provincial parks and campsites for repeatedly violating fire prohibitions, and impounding the cars of those caught flicking cigarette butts out their windows.

We can back all those plans. Frankly, anyone stupid enough to do some-

thing to endanger the safety of our forests – especially in a hot, dry year like this one – deserves a harsh punishment.

Unfortunately, however, focusing on punishments for human-caused fires is a mere drop in the bucket when it comes to addressing the real issues at play.

The fact of the matter is, wildfires will continue to burn every year, regardless of how careful each and every citizen is.The B.C. gov-

ernment’s own statistics show that, over the decade from 2004 to 2013, 38.5 per cent of wildfires were caused by people and another 61.5 per cent by lightning.

If even half of the province’s fires were preventable, we’d still be facing the possibility of raging infernos.

And, as scientists suggest that this year’s exceptionally hot, dry weather is but a sign of things to come, we have to get serious about

this problem.

The B.C. government has to set realistic budgets for firefighting.

And, even more to the point, it has to take the bull by the horns and finally start taking real action to address climate change.

Stopping an idiot from tossing a cigarette butt into a forest is a good thing.

But stopping the human race from destroying the planet is a much more urgent obligation.

IT woes plague government Just what is it with the B.C. government when it comes to expensive computer problems? The latest sorry chapter in this seemingly never-ending story was recently uncovered by Carol Bellringer, B.C.’s crack new independent auditor general. And this one is a doozy: a computer system that is five years late, 420 per cent over budget and is so inefficient, and possibly even outdated, that it requires an extra $14 million in annual maintenance.

Bellringer and her team audited the Panorama computer system and uncovered a horror show of cost overruns and errors. As well, they cited a lack of leadership within the ministry and a defensive mindset that shuts out criticism.

Operated within the Health Ministry, Panorama is supposed to manage infectious diseases across the country.

Five years after it began, the implementation is still not complete and B.C. taxpayers are on the hook for $113 million, and that figure continues to rise.

Perhaps even more alarming is the fact that Bellringer discovered that when the IT company in question (IBM) failed to deliver on the terms of its original contract, it was renegotiated to transfer any financial risk from IBM onto taxpayers.

But this epic computer fail is far from unusual within the B.C. government.

There were huge startup problems with the electronic health initiative (although

to be fair, this happened in other provinces as well, notably Ontario), and there have been serious problems with software in the K-12 education system.

And this past spring, Bellringer discovered the problem-plagued Integrated Case Management computer system, which is supposed to help social workers better serve vulnerable children and adults, was never completely implemented.

This is starting to become a very expensive kind of problem, because the government is spending more and more money on computer systems purchased from various IT companies.

In the 1990s, total IT costs were less than $50 million a year.They’ve increased almost tenfold since then and now are nearing a half-billion dollars a year.

No one has come up with the reason why computer problems are happening with mounting regularity. But I suspect a big factor may be that the government doesn’t have the same resources when it comes to assessing IT programs as the companies that are offering them for sale.

In any event, you can bet there will be more expensive computer fails within government in the future. And you can bet that Bellringer – who has quickly established herself as one of the sharpest B.C. auditors general ever – will be all over them.

Indeed we taxpayers need to see in print exactly who has abused the watering restrictions across the City of Burnaby. Does such a list exist of obvious offenders ?

Now, secondly, the densification ploy by developers must be stopped until adequate water supplies are addressed for all of Metro Vancouver and Burnaby specifically. Why does Burnaby charge $50 to shut off and $50 to turn on residential water lines and $150 to effect same on weekends, when the deposit and temporary loan would suffice ?

Someone at city hall really needs to examine such charges to residents in a spirit of natural equity.

Let’s ban smoking in family complexes Dear Editor Why is it that, given the knowledge we have on the effects of smoking and second-hand smoke, that smokers are allowed to light up on their patios or in direct shot to neighbouring windows or intakes?

As a forward-thinking and green-friendly city like Burnaby is, we as a municipality can be on the cutting edge of the way of the future by taking to council and voting in a no smoking policy in multi-family strata residences.

Water’s not a problem Dear Editor Re: Is city too lenient with watering fines? Burnaby NOW, Aug. 5. The population of Vancouver, and, therefore, its demand for water, have been steadily increasing, and predictably so, for decades. So why have our regional bureaucrats not prioritized something as essential as an abundant supply of water?

Why have they not expanded our existing natural reservoirs or constructed an additional artificial reservoir?

Mr. Gous says we need more “education” and that there is actually no “disregard” for the water restrictions. Well, let me tell you, I disregard the pathetic restrictions all of the time, because we are by an ocean and a mountain range, and, geographically, this is a rainforest.

This is not California. There is no water problem, there is a government problem.

We should be discussing the incompetence of Metro Vancouver, which is so nonsensical that, if elected in 2017 (www.LibertyForBurn aby.com), I would initiate a formal investigation into its administration. Metro Vancouver needs a complete overhaul; we do not need a so-called Water Shortage Response Plan, we do not need water meters, we do not need water classes, or snitching, or anything else. If we run out of water, it is the fault of Mr. Mussatto and his office, not ourselves or an imaginary drought.

Asked what he thought about the case, Nazami said it became complicated.

“It became complicated for reasons that it did not need to be complicated,” he said. “All I can say is that cases like this sooner or later get settled.This might have been the case here, too.

I just thought at the outset the reaction to it was somewhat exaggerated.”

Lennikov came to Canada in 1997 on a student visa. Under Canadian immigration law, anyone who was a member of an organi-

zation that spied on a democratic government is not allowed to stay unless the immigration minister deems they are not detrimental to national security. Lennikov was a KGB officer in the 1980s and mostly worked as a translator and was a lieutenant in a section of an office responsible for monitoring Japanese businessmen visiting Russia.

Lennikov has always maintained that he is no threat to Canada and that he was a reluctant recruit to the KGB. He lived with his wife and son in Burnaby but was ordered deported on June 3, 2009 after exhausting many legal avenues.

A day earlier, however, he went into church sanctuary inVancouver’s First Luther-

Lennikov had many supporters in Burnaby, including Peter Julian, the now incumbent NDP candidate for NewWestminster-Burnaby.

“I’m just mystified that he’s apparently leaving the country,” Julian said. “Having gone through all the access to information in his file, the government never had anything on him that indicated he should be treated with anything other than the humane consideration (that) the immigration minister always has the ability to bring in.”

The NOW also reached out to Canada Border Services Agency but did not get a response by press time.

Rescued dogs find new homes Cornelia Naylor

Two of the 57 animals surrendered by a Surrey woman last week have already found homes, thanks to the Burnaby SPCA. Thirty-five dogs, six cats and 16 horses were surrendered last Tuesday after an investigation by the B.C. SPCA. Special constables removed the animals from a Surrey acreage and brought them to the Vancouver SPCA to be triaged, according to Burnaby SPCA manager Ryan Voutilainen.

He said those in need of more serious medical attention were kept in Vancouver.

The six dogs taken in by Burnaby SPCA were dirty and a bit skinny but generally in decent shape, according to local vet Claudia Richter of Burnaby Veterinary Hospital, who came in on her day off Friday to treat them for free.

“They’re very nice dogs,” she told the NOW. “They were loved, these dogs, for sure. I think there was prob-

ably too many for her to take care of, but they all had human contact.”

For about three years, Richter’s clinic has donated one free surgery a month to the local SPCA.When Voutilainen told her about the extra animals the shelter was taking in this week, she offered instead to spay and neuter all of them and provide each a quick dental cleaning for free.

“Whoever adopts them has a fresh start,” Richter said.

All the dogs went up for adoption Saturday; two had found homes by Monday.

As of press deadline Tuesday, adoptions were pending for three others, while one pup was still looking for the right home.

The judge stated more than once he was at a loss to explain Read’s crime, noting nothing had ever before been taken from the exhibit locker during Read’s 28 years on the job and there was no evidence the former exhibit officer struggled with mental-health issues, alcoholism, addiction or financial problems.

Meyers concluded Read was in no need of rehabilitation or individual deterrence to prevent him from committing similar crimes in the future.

“I do not believe for a

moment that you will ever come before the court again on a like crime or any crime, for that matter,” Meyers stated. “You are almost 60.

You lived your whole life without any criminal involvement.You are a good family man, a hard worker, a conscientious and honest worker, a member of the community teaching sports,

The judge noted Read had written him two letters after his February conviction, expressing his remorse and outlining how his life has been devastated, including the loss of his job, his home and the trust, respect

But Read had been in a position of trust when he committed the crime, Meyers stated, and although the Crown did not lay a charge of breach of trust against the exhibit custodian, he was “in a category of a person who is guilty of a breach of trust.”

The judge concluded Read was entitled to “somewhat less, but not significantly less” punishment because he was a special constable appointed under the RCMP Act and the Police Act, rather than a fullfledged RCMP member.

“In terms of the public viewing it, there would be no distinction made by them whether you were an RCMP member or whether you were a civilian employed by the RCMP or whether you were a special police constable,” Meyers said.

The judge also noted Read did not “fess up” until after the lie-detector test and did not plead guilty.

How To Save On School Supplies Back to school season can be as expensive for parents as it is exciting for students. Take inventory. If you have more than one child, chances are you already have lots of school supplies around the house. Dust off kids’ backpacks and study areas from last school year to determine which supplies you need to buy and which you already have. Going forward, encourage kids to store their supplies in a predetermined area once the school year ends, as this will make next year’s inventory that much easier to examine and assess.

A business man based in Surrey is hoping residents in Burnaby can help him find a missing member of his flock.

Glen Williams, also known as the Flamingo Guy, was driving from Delta to North Burnaby late Friday night when a beloved member of his well-known lawn displays flew the coop.

An eight-foot-tall buzzard that was strapped to the back of Williams’ work trailer somehow came loose during the drive, and he didn’t notice it was missing until after he arrived at his destination in North Burnaby.Williams drove from Delta to North Burnaby via the Alex Fraser Bridge, passing through Queensborough and over the Queensborough Bridge on to Marine Way and over to Boundary Road, where he turned right and headed north to North Burnaby.

“It went missing. I don’t know what the hell happened. It’s strapped on to

the roof of our trailer, … and probably for the last 15 years we’ve used this system, and it’s never been an issue, and somehow the straps loosened up late Friday night, and by the time I got to my next delivery in Burnaby it was gone,”Williams told the NOW. When he realized the buzzard was missing,Williams retraced his steps all the way back to Delta, even checking ditches along the way, hoping to find the missing bird, but it was gone.

“Somebody must have picked him up and put him in their pickup truck or van because you really can’t get it in a normal car, that’s for sure,”Williams said.

The missing bird is a large, hand-painted plywood cut-out of a buzzard wearing a top hat sitting on a tombstone. It weighs about 40 to 50 pounds.

Williams is offering a $100 reward for its safe return or for information that leads to the buzzard’s whereabouts.

Canada’s top dogs descend on Burnaby National agility championships at Swangard Stadium this week Jennifer Moreau

When Burnaby’s Dove Cresswell took in Torque, a rescue dog from Idaho, he was so fearful, he would hide under the table in terror if she moved too suddenly.The dog had been kept on a chain for more than a year, before a rescue group took him in.

“I’ve been in competitions since 2004, and doing any of the competitive dog sports really increases your bond with your dog, your relationship with your dog, and it makes for an allaround better canine companion. My dogs absolutely love it,” Cresswell said.

Cresswell said her dogs love agility, and Torque aims to please.

“He tries his little heart out for me to get everything right,” she said.

Cresswell is so hooked on agility training she’s entering all three of her dogs in the contest, which runs until Sunday.

The Agility Association

of Canada is hosting the five-day event, which kicks off today. An estimated 500 dogs from across Canada will descend on Burnaby’s Swangard Stadium to compete.

The contestants have already made it through the regional championships to qualify for the nationals, so the championships will feature the best and brightest “canine athletes” in the country, organizers promise.

The dogs come in all shapes, sizes and breeds, and they are pets first.They perform a variety of stunts: jumping, tunnelling, weaving around poles or scaling A-frames. Certain events focus on speed, while others highlight the dogs’ ability to follow verbal cues.

“This is the Olympics of Canadian Agility – fast, fun and exciting to watch. Many of the sports best handlers going head to head, and sometimes an unlikely team will sneak in and snag the top prize,” said Nicole LeBlanc, the association’s president.

And just like the Olympics, the championships is hosting an opening ceremony.There will also be a mini pet fair with pet-related items for sale, and non-profits will bring rescue dogs.

Swangard Stadium is in the northwest corner of Central Park.Wednesday’s events are closed to the public, but anyone can attend from Thursday to Sunday, and admission is free with a donation to the GreaterVancouver Food Bank. For a schedule, go to www.aac nationals2015.ca.

In defence of a Minto dream

Opportunities in sports are sometimes like shooting stars – rare and fleeting.

So, when Burnaby’s Brad Breadon was released by the junior A Lakers prior to the trade deadline this season, he was more than happy to be picked up by the B.C. Junior Lacrosse League’s top team.

As a third-year defender in his final season of junior, Breadon is one of the lucky ones, going from last place to a Minto Cup challenger in the span of less than 24 hours.

Breadon scored his first junior A goal as a Coquitlam Adanac in the team’s 26-6 win over the Delta Islanders in the final game of the regular season.

He also managed to crack the lineup in approximately half of the A’s back-to-back series sweeps over New Westminster and Delta in the playoffs.

Earlier this month, Breadon also saw duty in Coquitlam’s final game at the Western Canadian finals in Calgary – a 13-3 victory over the Okotoks Raiders – that earned the A’s a fourth trip to the Minto in the past five seasons.

But that’s just fine with the 6-3, 200-pound Burnaby defender, who tasted playoff lacrosse for the first time in his career this season.

“It’s awesome.You spend your whole life wanting to win a Minto Cup, so to finally get an opportunity like this is pretty cool,” said Breadon, just days before the team flew east to take on the Six Nations Arrows in a repeat of last year’s Canadian junior A lacrosse final won by the Ontario champion in a sixgame series.

As a product of the Burnaby minor system, Breadon has been through some lean years.

In fact, lacrosse had become more about the camaraderie rather than wins and losses, he said.

“I loved the guys and the team, but we struggled,” said Breadon.

ready when called upon to play.

“You’ve got to go out every shift, you have to separate it from all the (past) mistakes and the goals scored,” Breadon said, “I just have to keep my head down and keep working.”

Breadon knows the Adanacs will be in tough when they travel to Hagersville, Ont. to take on Six Nations at the Iroquois Lacrosse Arena.

The Jr. A Arrows have gone to the Minto six times and won two cups since the 2,300-seat lacrosse-

only arena was built in 2004.

“I’m just ready to play a sevengame series. It’s going to be a battle,” said Breadon. “We have the talent to do it. I think we have a great shot; everyone wants to do it.

I think we’re going to go in there and have a great battle.”

Coquitlam won its first-ever Minto Cup at home against the Orangeville Northmen in 2010.

The last time a B.C. team won a Canadian Jr. A lacrosse banner back east was in 1979 by Burnaby Cablevision.

A team from the West Coast has won a Minto Cup just 13 times in the past 45 years.

The best-of-seven Minto Cup final kicks off on Saturday, Aug. 22, with Game 2 played on Sunday.

Game 3 is scheduled for Tuesday, Aug. 25 and Game 4 for Aug. 26.

If necessary, a Game 5 will be played on Thursday, Aug. 27.

Games 6 and 7, if necessary, will take place on Aug. 29 and 30, respectively.

B.C., including Burnaby’s Gurinder Nijjar and Brady Hughes, was perfect in pool play, blanking both Saskatchewan andYukon in Pool B. Earlier, Burnaby Special Olympians also made their mark at the Western Canada Games.

April Armstrong, 22, won three silver medals in track and field, placing run-

ner-up in the women’s 100 and 200 metres, and long jump.

Daniel Batson also won a pair of second-place medals in the sprints.

The 22-year-old Batson earned silver medals in the men’s 100 and 200m races.

B.C. topped the medal count with 280 total medals, including 134 gold.

Alberta was in second place with 226 medals.

Two of B.C.’s baseball teams came away secondbest at age group national championships this week.

The midget Premier Baseball League champion North Shore Twins, including Burnaby’s Nicholas Carusi, Nicholas Favaro and Steven Moretto, were beaten 6-1 by Quebec in the gold-medal final at the 18-and-under Baseball Canada championships at Magog, Que. on Sunday.

Carusi batted in B.C.’s only run in the top of the seventh inning.

The Notre Dame Regional School left fielder led the squad with a .438 batting average at the nationals.

B.C. advanced to the final following a 10-0 five-inning blowout over Manitoba earlier in the day.

Favaro, a St.Thomas More Collegiate catcher, led B.C. with three RBI on two hits. He also scored a run.

Third baseman Moretto also scored a run in the mercy-rule win, while Carusi had three hits, a RBI and a run scored.

Burnaby Minor also settled for a silver medal at the13-and-under National Western Championships in Coquitlam.

The provincial runnersup, including JackYaremko, Mathieu Laroche, Jarrett Watson, Carter Findlay, Brendan Wang, Justin Podnar, Massimo Luongo and Kyle Anderson, lost to host Coquitlam-Moody 2-0 in the gold-medal final at Town Centre field on Sunday.

Burnaby earned a spot in the finals following a 10-0 win over eventual bronze medallists South Jasper Place, Alta.

Anderson led the team with two hits and two runs scored.

Yaremko, Laroche and Wang all had one hit, one RBI and one run scored for B.C. B.C. also had a big 11-3 win over Sherwood Park, Alta.

Yaremko, Laroche and Wang equally shared in six of B.C’s nine hits in the two-hitter.

Burnaby Lakers placed two players on second teams following a Western Lacrosse Association announcement.

Righthander Robert Church and goalie Tye Belanger were both named to the WLA second all-star team, along with defenders Ian Hawksbee of the New Westminster Salmonbellies and Victoria Shamrocks’ Rory Smith.

Sharing a spot with Church on the second line were Pat Saunders of the Langley Thunder and New West’s Logan Schuss, who finished third and fourth, respectively, in regular season scoring.

Burnaby defender Jesse Fehr and Zack Porter of Maple Ridge were co-winners of the Fred Wooster

Award at the league’s unsung heroes.

The first all-star team included Salmonbellie rookie Eric Penney in goal, Langley’s Brett Mydske and Jeff Cornwall of New West on defence.

Up front,Victoria’s Corey Small and Jesse King flanked league MVP Ben McIntosh of the Maple Ridge Burrards.

Small won the overall scoring title with 33 goals, including a league-best five game winners, and 79 points. King had 33 goals, five of them coming while shorthanded.

Small and Schuss led the league in three-star balloting, including a WLAbest five first-star honours apiece. Church was also named among the game stars on seven separate occasions.

Penney and Belanger

both posted a league-high eight wins during the regular season. Penney led the league with a 0.829 save percentage. Belanger was among the busiest in goal, finishing with a second-best 7.85 goals against average and a fourth overall 0.804 save percentage.

Penney also won the outstanding goalie award, while sharing the rookie of the year honour with Langley’s Anthony Malcom.

Mydske, a New Westminster product, won the best defensive player award.

Bruce Murray, who announced his retirement prior to the end of the season, was named the winner of the Maitland Trophy for outstanding play, sportsmanship and contribution to minor lacrosse.

Coquitlam’s Todd Stockdale was awarded this season’s coach of the year.
