An ambitious plan for Lougheed Town Centre’s core area is moving ahead, with the draft concept plan going to a second open house.

The plan includes seven “character precincts” and five large public spaces, according to a staff report that was presented to Burnaby council at Monday night’s meeting.

Austin Road would become a vibrant, pedestrian high street, according to the report, and North Road would be a landscaped retail street. Cameron Street would be a mixed-use area with retail shops and townhouses.

Other plans include a grand promenade connecting Cameron Street to a transit plaza.The promenade would be the main outdoor shopping destination.

friendly thoroughfare, the report stated.

A pedestrian spine would be a weather-protected shopping area, while Bartlett Court on the western side of the property would primarily be a residential street.

A large park and urban plaza space would be at the heart of the Lougheed site, the report stated.

Other public spaces include the transit plaza; Creekside, which pays homage to Lost Creek; pocket parks along North Road; the Cochrane Steps from North Road to the grand promenade; and Lougheed Highway.

The plan includes 12.2 million square feet of residential floor space and 14.9 mil-

lion square feet of retail, commercial, office and entertainment space, according to the report.

City staff are planning the second open house now that the more detailed draft concept plan is being put forward. Burnaby council endorsed the plan and authorized the open house, which will be held in the Lougheed area some time in mid-June.

The majority property owner for the area is Shape Properties, which owns Lougheed mall.

The mall was built in 1968, expanded in 1986 and renovated in the early 2000s. In

City wants to crack down on loan biz Burnaby looking at restrictions on payday lender locations

Payday loan companies may soon find it harder to set up shop in the city.

City council took steps towards restricting payday lender locations in Burnaby at Monday night’s meeting, after receiving a detailed staff report on the topic.

A delegation from the Burnaby branch of ACORN (Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now) Canada spoke to council in February 2014, asking that something be done to stop the exploitation of the poor by payday lenders.The issue was referred to the city’s planning and development committee.

“I think it was worth the wait because I think our staff have done a fabulous job of canvassing all of the issues around so-called payday loans,” Coun. Colleen Jordan, who heads the committee, said at the meeting.

Staff recommended that council authorize a bylaw amendment that would limit new payday loan locations to zoning districts in the city specifically for pawn shops and second-hand stores.

Currently, they’re considered a bank under the zon-

ing bylaw and are permitted in commercial and neighbourhood districts, where banks are.

The proposed amendment will eventually go to public hearing.

Current payday lenders that offer to buy gold must apply to be rezoned under the current bylaw as pawn shops or must close up shop, according to the report.

Council passed all the recommended motions at Monday night’s meeting.

ACORN’s Burnaby branch lauded the move.

“My understanding is that it’s going to be much more difficult for pay-

day lenders to start operations in Burnaby in the future, and we at ACORN are good with that,” ACORN member Rick Erb told the NOW. “In our view, the payday lending operations put a great deal of pressure on lower and moderate income

people.”

Payday loan stores in lower-income areas that offer high-interest, short-term loans have been an issue for a number of cities, with White Rock and Maple Ridge recently prohibiting such businesses.

There are eight payday loan locations in Burnaby, according to the staff report, with six located on Kingsway.

Last-minute transit ref voters flock to city mall

Yellow transit plebiscite envelopes emerged from cluttered desks and glove compartments all over Burnaby and surrounding communities on the last day of the vote Friday, and found their way into ballot boxes at the Lougheed Town Centre service centre.

“It’s the panic run,” one Elections B.C. worker told the NOW two hours before the 8 p.m. deadline. “It’s definitely spurred a lot of people to take [the ballots] out of their car.They’ve decided it’s too late to mail it, so now they’re bringing them in.”

Although the vote was designed as mail-in only, Elections B.C. opened nine depots in Metro Vancouver, including the Lougheed Town Centre office, to answer questions and collect ballots.

Reasons for casting lastminute ballots ranged from procrastination to indecision to misunderstandings about the deadline, according to voters who spoke to the NOW. “I thought I could just postmark it, but then I was reminded on the news this morning it actually has to be received [today],” New Westminster resident Susan Wacker said after casting a Yes vote.

“I votedYes because I recognize that we do need improvements in our transit system, and also because I think that they’re going to find the money from us taxation-wise one way or the other, so this way it distributes it to all users; whereas, if they just tax property taxes, only certain people are paying.”

But Maple Ridge residentYuriy Zhevelyuk said taxes shouldn’t have to be increased at all, so he voted No. “I feel that they tax us enough as it is already,” he said, “and I believe they can improve efficiencies somewhere within their ranks to find ways to fund all those

Local surgeons who have long called for Fraser Health to open another operating room at Burnaby Hospital to cut down long surgical wait lists will get their way by September.

Fraser Health announced last week it would spend $1.68 million to open one of the hospital’s dormant operating rooms.

“Our aim is to open a seventh OR permanently in September 2015,” spokesperson Nafisa Abdulla told the NOW in an email. “We are looking at opportunities to open earlier depend-

ing on human resources, such as staff and anaesthesiologist recruitment, etc.

A Burnaby Hospital multidisciplinary group has been created specifically to oversee the needs, requirements and risk assessments for the seventh OR room to be operationalized and fully functional.”

Fraser Health had opened an extra operating room at the hospital temporarily on and off this spring to deal specifically with long wait lists for ophthalmology, plastics and orthopedics, but, come September, the room should be up and running permanently, according to Abdulla.

Government silence is deafening If a serious issue is discussed by senior government officials but no record of that exists, did it really happen?

The answer – like the answer to “If a tree falls” – apparently, is no.

Unless a whistleblower pops up.

Last week that happened, when an ex-staffer charged that senior government officials habitually react to requests for information by

deleting emails.

Nothing to see here.

It’s tempting to write off the comments as coming from a disgruntled ex-employee.

But the troubling fact is, the pattern of evading a legitimate right to know has already been amply demonstrated.

Recall that in the “quick wins” scandal, a political plan to use government resources for partisan benefit

was discussed over private emails.

Text messages are also routinely used as a way to circumvent privacy laws.

We’ve entered the age of government by Snapchat.

As the Opposition has repeatedly pointed out, a disturbing number of Freedom of Information requests are returned with “no records found.”

Ultimately, it’s about control.

There’s a disturbing trend of government keeping a stranglehold on information.

On a fundamental level, people hate being held ac-

countable.

That goes double in politics.There’s a disturbing trend of government keeping a stranglehold on information, to keep the truth from getting in the way of official messaging.

A critical public often likes to blame the media for failing to ask the “tough questions.”

But frequently the questions just aren’t being answered.

It’s worth noting it’s not just reporters and Opposition politicians whom the government is keeping in the dark through these practices. It’s the public who elected them.

And that’s a frightening comment on the state of what passes for democracy in our country today.

Libs staying out of housing

Don’t look for the provincial government to offer any fixes to cool down the redhot Metro Vancouver housing market any time soon, and that’s probably a good thing.

That may come as a disappointment to many hoping to access that market, but government officials tell me they’ve studied the situation and have concluded there are limited options available, and even those are unlikely to have much impact.

After taking a close look at things, officials have concluded the following: foreign buyers have had little impact on escalating market prices (with the exception of high-end properties), speculators have also had little impact, and the gradual decline in the number of single-family dwellings is more than anything else the biggest reason for skyrocketing housing prices The B.C. government insists it has found no evidence to support the theory about foreign investors igniting the market. Part of the problem here appears to be the lack of data, as no one seems to keep track of much of anything when it comes to housing sales, other than the price and the tax revenues for various levels of government.

But perhaps none of this matters anyway.

Any kind of major government intervention (e.g. limiting foreign ownership, implementing some kind of speculation tax etc.)

would probably be unworkable and in any event may do more harm than good (no one holding a $700,000 mortgage right now wants to see the built-up equity in their home start shrinking because of new rules or taxes).

I have a number of friends who have recently purchased homes in Vancouver for well more than $1 million and are carrying huge mortgages. Should they (and presumably hundreds of others who have bought homes in the past few years) be penalized because they took a chance and got into the market?

The distortions that are happening in the Metro Vancouver housing market seem to be the result of large sums of money moving around and a shifting difference between supply and demand (in other words, the kinds of things that can happen in the marketplace).

If action were to be taken, it should have been taken long ago, before the market went crazy.To intervene and change the rules now would likely hurt more existing homeowners than those who aspire to own one.

No one has some kind of constitutional right to own something they can’t afford, and that means no one has a guaranteed “right” to own a home in Metro Vancouver.

It appears the B.C. government will do nothing to change that.

Hospital gave mother her old life back

Dear Editor In the recent past, there have been many negative stories about Burnaby Hospital. Here is an overdue happy one.

At the end of May 2013, my then 89-yearold mother developed right hip and leg pain that was initially misdiagnosed, which led to inappropriate and ineffective treatment. She quickly went from walking briskly at least two miles a day to being unable to move at all without extreme pain. The problem was exacerbated by the lengthy wait-time to see specialists. Our family is long-lived, and I was heartsick as I began to visualize my mother spending her last years disabled and in chronic pain with its accompanying depression.

Finally, my mother was referred to Dr. Graham Pate, an orthopedic surgeon who, in the spring of 2014, diagnosed a hairline hip fracture that had previously been missed. She went on a surgical waiting list in July 2014. We were braced for at least a six-month wait, but a sudden cancellation opened a spot, and her hip was replaced on Nov. 27 at the Burnaby Hospital.

Other than post-surgical soreness, my mother was immediately pain free, was home in a week and, after a course of physiotherapy at Burnaby Hospital, she was walking normally

by February. At every level, the surgical team, staff, nurses, and physiotherapists were upbeat, encouraging and reassuring to my mother.

Despite 17 months of unrelenting pain and the tremendous pressure that exists these days on all medical professionals and hospital staff, my mother is pain free, has no limp, is physically independent and back to taking long walks every day. People who saw her when she was struggling are amazed at her recovery. Heartfelt thanks to Dr. Pate and the staff at Burnaby Hospital for giving my mother back her life.

Burnaby North needs better representation Dear Editor Take Back Burnaby North.

Democracy in Canada and in British Columbia has been hijacked by the corporate agenda and a complete lack of honest leadership. The actions of the federal Conservative government and the provincial Liberal (Conservative) government have diminished the quality of life and the reputations of our province and our country. Our “leaders” are taking their marching orders from their corporate masters (primary campaign contributors), and our local representatives act like bagmen and selfserving puppets. B.C. has the highest childpoverty rate in Canada, the lowest per-student funding for public education and politicians who are in the news more often for scandals than for helping their constituents. The apparent motto of the provincial “Fiberals” is “ Do whatever it takes to win.”

Burnaby North has been poorly represented for 14 years because Richard T. Lee thinks his role is to do and say what the premier wants him to do and say – not what is in the best interests of the citizens of Burnaby North. Mr. Lee may be a nice man, but he is clearly not an effective MLA. Burnaby North doesn’t need coffee with Richard, it needs effective leadership and honest representation.

Volunteers behind the campaign to recall Burnaby MLA Richard Lee are feeling more than excluded from Hats Off Day. The Heights Merchants Association, which hosts the festival this Saturday, is not allowing the recall volunteers to canvass inside the event and asked they refrain from collecting signatures on the side streets.

“We felt that was infringing on our democratic rights, and it was overstepping their bounds in terms of what they can tell us to do and not do,” said Jennifer Heighton, one of the key organizers with B.C. Citizens for Recall.

The recall group has until June 15 to collect 16,494 signatures to oust Lee, the Liberal MLA for Burnaby North.

Hats Off Day draws tens of thousands of people, and the recall volunteers were planning to collect signatures on the side streets after they were initially rejected from the festival.

When the Heights Merchants Association heard about the plan, executive director Isabel Kolic emailed the campaigners explaining Hats Off Day is “strictly non-partisan” and “nonpolitical.”

In an interview with the NOW, Kolic explained that the association has received past complaints about people aggressively handing out pamphlets, and that elected officials are asked to stay at their tables and not bother people.

“Obviously this is a democracy, and that’s an important aspect to protect in our country, but we also wanted them to understand the spirit of Hats Off Day,” Kolic said. “We don’t want to be condoning anything that’s viewed as partisan. … It just puts us in a really awkward position.”

That said, Heighton pointed out that politicians, including Lee, and advocacy groups like the Dogwood Initiative, are allowed to set up inside the festival, and some will be collecting signatures for their own petitions.

The recall volunteers are still planning to collect signatures on several side streets on north and south sides of Hastings Street, between Alpha and MacDonald avenues, about half a block from the festival barricades.

54-40 headlining Canada Day concert Canadian rock icons 5440 are headlining this year’s Canada Day festivities in Burnaby.

The City of Burnaby has announced its plans for a free Canada Day concert and fireworks show at Swangard Stadium, for the second consecutive year.

“After so much positive feedback from last year’s Canada Day celebration, we are excited to continue this new tradition in Burnaby,” said Mayor Derek Corrigan in a press release. “I look forward to this free family-friendly celebration filled with music and fireworks in honour of our country.”

54-40 has marked 30 years on the Canadian music scene, with a vast catalogue of hit songs from its three-decade career – tunes like Baby Ran, I Go Blind and Ocean Pearl.

Led by chief songwriter Neil Osborne, 54-40 has produced a series of gold and platinum albums and has a long career as popular live performers.

“A band has to evolve with its audience to keep their interest,” said bassist Brad Merritt in the release.

“We make records based on where we’re at, at that time.

So it’s kind of like a time capsule.”

The concert will also include folk-rockers Jon and Roy, along with reggae band Mostly Marley.

The event also includes activities and exhibitors with offerings for all ages, plus a

Fans of the community bike fair for kids now have two locations to choose from.The bike fair, which is always a huge hit, will take place at the regular venue on Friday, June 5 at Edmonds Community School.

The fair runs from 6 to 9 p.m. and includes a mountain bike tricks show, an obstacle course, bike decorating, minor repairs and more. Anyone planning to ride at the event must wear a helmet.There will also be a concession and a draw for a new bike.The school is at 7651 18th Ave. The second bike fair will be Tuesday, June 12, from

6 to 9 p.m. at Forest Grove Elementary, at 8525 Forest Grove Dr., and includes all the fun activities from the Edmonds event.

Local mom Tammy Ozero started the bike fair years ago with a grant from the Vancouver Foundation, and she’s been organizing the event ever since.

Both bike fairs will be accepting donations of bike and bike parts, tricycles and helmets for the Burnaby Lougheed Lions Club, which refurbishes bikes and gives them to kids in need.

TOOLS UP FOR GRABS Keep an eye out for the

Burnaby firefighters at Hats Off Day this weekend.They will be auctioning off some Milwaukee tools to raise money for quake victims in Nepal.The tools were donated by a kind stranger who bumped into the Burnaby firefighters en route to Nepal.

The firefighters were on their way to help with recovery efforts following the first quake, which claimed thousands of lives.

Money raised from auctioning off the tools will go to Eoin White’s fundraising campaign to help the families he works with through his Mount Everest trekking company.

White, a retired Burnaby fire captain, has raised $54,635 to date for his

Nepalese contacts. He’s taken hundreds of people to the basecamp on Mount Everest, including some of the firefighters who helped in the relief efforts.

Hats Off Day is this Saturday, June 6. The firefighters will be at Fire Hall No. 5 at 4211 Hastings St.

volunteers to help with setup, take-down and course marshalling on Sunday, June 7 from 8 a.m. till noon.

t was a gorgeous, sunny day at Riverway Golf Course as local dignitaries and celebrities gathered to play a few rounds, all for a good cause.

The 16th annual Michael J. Fox Golf Tournament took place on Thursday, May 27, with money going to the South Burnaby theatre named after Fox. Fox was on hand along with his family, according to Gary Morrey, chair of the board of directors for the Michael J. Fox Theatre Society.

“It was very successful,” Morrey said. “The weather was fantastic.”

The tournament, which included an evening banquet, raised $55,000 for the theatre, he said.

Fox emceed the banquet, which took place at the Hilton Metrotown Hotel in the evening.

Jackson Davies, who played Const. John Constable on The Beachcombers, also emceed at the event.

There were more than 320 people at the banquet, according to Morrey.

The highlight of the night was the auction, which included a trip for two to New York from Cathay Pacific, and a two-night stay at a hotel, he said.

“Michael’s hosting a lunch with them when they come into New York,” he added.

Another popular item was a cookbook by Tracy Pollan, Fox’s wife, according to Morrey.

The Pollan Family Table, which she wrote with her mother Corky and sisters

Lori and Dana, has a foreword written

by Fox. He signed the copy for the auction, Morrey said.

Other notables at the tournament included Global News’ Squire Barnes, Burnaby Mayor Derek Corrigan and NDP MLA Kathy Corrigan, his wife.

The golfers teed off at 12:15 p.m., and the evening event wrapped up by 11 p.m., according to Morrey.

The largest donation was from Scotiabank. The financial institution pitched in $15,000, followed up by the Hilton, which donated $10,000, he said.

The live auction, with all items donated, raised $9,000, and the silent auction raised $8,000, he added.

The popular annual fundraiser has a wait-list, according to Morrey.

“Out of the 16 years that people came, 80 per cent of the people have been golfing that amount of time, and about 85 per cent have been coming for dinner,” he said.

New exhibition explores folk art of Japan Julie MacLellan LIVELY CITY

The Nikkei Centre is offering up a glimpse into the world of Japanese craftspeople.

MINGEI: Japan’s Enduring Folk Arts is set to run June 20 to Oct. 11 at the Nikkei National Museum and Cultural Centre.

The exhibition features objects collected from across Japan during the 1980s and published in the book Mingei: Japan’s Enduring Folk Art. It will include more than 100 works of folk art being shown for the first time in Canada.

Amaury Saint-Gilles, the collector and author, will be on hand for an artist talk and opening celebration on Saturday, June 27 from 3 to 5 p.m.

“Folk art from whatever nation in the world has a wholesome character that tells a tale,” Saint-Gilles said in a press release. “When you deal with the more functional wares you see

how simplicity speaks with an elegance that many far more elaborate works never attain. I see the humble maker within these pieces that are all far from mute.”

The exhibition has been curated by Margo Palmer, Sam Carter and Sherri Kajiwara.

Other programs and events are coming up in connection with the exhibition, including MakeYour Own Mingei Family Day events on June 28, July 26 and Aug. 16.

QUARTET BACK ON STAGE A Burnaby native and St. Thomas More grad is once again taking centre stage as the Koerner Quartet closes its 2014/15 season.

Joseph Elworthy is a Burnaby native who’s now the executive director of the Vancouver Academy of Music. He’s also the cellist with the quartet, which also

features violinists Nicholas Wright and Jason Ho, plus Emilie Grimes on viola.

The ensemble is taking to the stage at the Vancouver Academy of Music’s Koerner Recital Hall for Summer Serenade, this Sunday, June 7 at 7 p.m.

They will be joined by two rising stars from the academy, 19-year-old Esther Hwang on violin and 18-year-old Trisha Doo on cello, in a Tchaikovsky sextet.

“My fellow quartet members and I are continually amazed by their burgeoning

talent, maturity and artistry,” Elworthy said in a press release. “We’re thrilled to work alongside them as fellow performers in a wonderful finale to our first public season.”

Tickets for the Summer Serenade are $18, or $15 for students and seniors.

CHILDHOOD REMEMBERED IN NEW BOOK A section of Clydesdale Street in Burnaby was bulldozed and paved to make way for an entrance to Highway 1. But there was a time in the 1940s and 1950s when it was a quiet rural street bustling with kids playing.

Bob Tuss was one of them, and he’s written a compelling set of stories about how the youngsters filled their days with snowball fights and soapbox derbies in his e-book Rumble on Clydesdale Street – Life and Times.

“Under the asphalt remain the memories of young children whose time in history leaves behind the spirit and energy that made

Clydesdale Street special.

The chapters herein breathe back to life those lively times when Clydesdale Street rang proud with the sound of innocence, games and freedom,” reads description about the book.

Tuss was stopped at an intersection one day surveying his old neighbourhood, watching all the cars driving in the area, when he decided to write the book about the carefree childhood he recalled so fondly. His great memories, include, for instance, rafting on Still Creek with his neighbourhood pals.

“It was a whole different life,” said Tuss. “We were free, we grew up as children.

It was a 10-year period of life that doesn’t exist anymore.

Putting in a complete game contined to be a frustration for the struggling junior A Burnaby Lakers.

The last-place Lakers gave the visiting 8-3 Shamrocks a run for their money for the first two periods before eventually falling 16-9 to Victoria at the Bill Copeland Sports Centre on Sunday.

Burnaby played Victoria even through the opening 20 minutes, but looked like they might take an early shower after giving up fourstraight goals in a four-minute span to start the middle frame.

But Tyler Kirkby’s second goal of the game on a power play two minutes later sparked a Burnaby resurgence that brought the hosts back to within a goal of the ’Rocks.

Jordan Lashar, with his first tally of the year, and Mitch McDole, with his hat-trick marker kept the deficit to a pair of goals before Aidan Milburn sniped his league-leading 23rd goal of the season coming off the bench on a pass up floor from Lashar.

But the final period proved Burnaby’s undoing.

Victoria scored seven times, including Ryan Lewis’ second shorthanded goal of the game that ignited the Shamrocks’ runaway third period.

“We’re having a tough time putting in a 60-minute game,” said Lashar after the

Trailing by a similar 9-8 scoreline on Milburn’s power-play marker in the final minute of the second period, Burnaby gave up the first two goals of the final period, including the eventual game-winning tally by Greg Lunde, who led all scorers with three goals and six points.

“The amount of talent on this team is oozing.We have a lot of talent. But the league is so close you have to put in a full game effort – no shortcuts,” Lashar said.

The final year 21-yearold added its up to the senior players like himself to play up to the standard the club expects from them.

It’s all about building on last year’s encouraging

5-15-1 record and putting the Laker franchise back on a winning footing, Lashar said.

“It’s finding that way for the club to progress to the next level,” he said.

The junior Lakers played New Westminster at Queen’s Park on Tuesday (after NOW deadlines).

Burnaby will be back at the Bill Copeland Sports Centre next Sunday (June 7) against the PoCo Saints, beginning at 7 p.m.

Moscrop Secondary scored a best-ever fourthplace finish at the B.C. high school AAA tennis championships in Burnaby.

Led by a strong boys’ team, the West Burnaby high school made it to the semifinals of the high school provincials before suffering its first loss of the tournament – a 7-4 loss to eventual runner-up Heritage Woods at the Burnaby Tennis Club on Saturday.

The top-four finish was the best ever outcome for a Burnaby school dating back more than 20 years, said Moscrop coach Daniel Tetrault, a sixth-year Moscrop Secondary instructor and former high school tennis player at Vancouver Technical while growing up.

“We’re very encouraged and looking forward next year to getting to the finals,” Tetrault said.

ment, bantam-aged Luka Vukovic, Moscrop took a lion’s share of the awards following the match-play provincial format.

Vukovic, who helped Canada’s under-14 junior tennis team to a secondplace finish at the recent North/Central America and Caribbean qualifying tournament in Florida, won all of the singles matches he played at the high school provincials.Vukovic will be part of Canada’s u-14 team at the World Junior Tennis finals in Prostejov, Czech Republic in August.

The Burnaby school then guaranteed themselves a spot in the semifinals following a 6-5 win over Semiahmoo that came down to a final mixed doubles match that Luka Vukovic and Lindsay Cameron won 6-4 over the South Surrey school.

Abhishek Damania, Ivan Premovic and Milan Zivadinovic also shared in the boys’ success for Moscrop.

Maya Kumagi, Lauren Hum, Elizabeth Fesechko, Phoebe Wong and Cameron will all graduate this year, leaving Abby Low as the lone returning girl on Moscrop next season.

That leaves Tetrault with the job of next year combing the halls at Moscrop for another group of female athletes to build a tennis team around.

“That’s the plan,” he said. “That’s the trick, to see who has the potential and who wants to play.”

Sophie Schmidt made a definite statement in Canada’s final exhibition soccer match prior to the start of the FIFA Women’s World Cup, which kicks off this Saturday.

Schmidt scored her first goal of 2015 and arguably the prettiest of her earlier 15 international tallies with Canada’s women’s national team in a 1-0 victory over No. 6-ranked England in a friendly match played in Hamilton on Saturday.

Playing before a partisan crowd of more than 23,000 supporters, Schmidt struck with a first-touch volley from outside the 18-yard box off a cross from teammate Josee Belanger, cracking the right-footed onetimer into the top left corner of the England goal midway through the first half in the final buildup to the Women’s World Cup. The goal was a definitive punctuation to a series between the two nations that had been dominated by the British side up to Saturday’s encounter.

The eighth-ranked Canadians have lost to England four times previously, including a 1-0 loss in the final of the Cyprus Women’s Cup back in March of this year.

The victory over England also set the stage nicely for Canada’s kickoff as hosts to the Women’s World Cup this Saturday (June 6) at Commonwealth Stadium in Edmonton, when the Maple Leaf takes on Mainland China in the championship opener. Canada, led by Burnaby superstar Christine Sinclair, also shares a pool with New Zealand and the Netherlands.

The Canadians take on the Kiwis on June 11 in Edmonton before closing out Pool A with a game in Montreal at Olympic Stadium against the Dutch on June 15.

“They rose to that pressure knowing that they had to get a result for their country to get the momentum moving. I think the performance tells you they are ready,” said head coach John Herdman in a Canada Soccer press release.

Burnaby North qualified for the B.C. high school AAA girls’ soccer championships on short notice and made the best of it.

The Vikings lost the Burnaby/New Westminster/ North Shore zone berth to Argyle following an earlier 4-0 loss last month.

But North got a second opportunity as an 11thhour entry after a Williams Lake school backed out just a week before the tournament held at the University of Victoria last weekend.

Placed in a tough pool with last year’s champion Fleetwood Park and No. 6-ranked McMath, North finished last in its pool and wound up in 16th place following a 5-3 loss to Mt. Baker in the final placement game.

Megan Lai was North’s selection for the Commissioner’s XI, while Allyson Dickson and Sophia Gorovcin led the Vikings on the playing field with three and two goals, respectively. Jessica Filippelli also had a goal on a free kick in the tournament.

Charles Best defeated Fleetwood Park in extra time in the provincial final.

Despite finishing the tournament with just 13 players and losing some key figures to graduation, North coach Deb Peters is encouraged about next year’s team.

With the majority of players returning of junior age or younger, Peters said it is all about next season.

In AA high school girls’ soccer, Notre Dame Regional School placed 11th following a 2-0 victory over Holy Cross at Burnaby Lake Sports Complex-West on Saturday.

Notre Dame played eventual provincial champion Brooks tight in its opening game, narrowly surrendering a 1-0 outcome.The Jugglers also lost to eventual eighth-place finisher Archbishop Carney 1-0 in a shootout.

Brooks went on to defeat BNW/North Shore zone champion Seycove 2-1 in the AA final.

A vulnerable sector criminal record check is also mandatory. This part-time position offers a flexible 20 hours per week.
