This year’s winners of the City of Burnaby Christmas card contest are a pair right out of a great kids’ book.

First, there’s the names: Flora Su and Floria Gu. Wouldn’t it be funny if they knew each other?, you say.

Well, in fact, they do.

They’re best friends, and they’re both in Olwen Cowan’s Grade 4/5 class at Capitol Hill Elementary.

But that’s not where they met.

“We met in tap and realized our names were really similar,” says Floria.

“Whenever the teacher said to do buddies, we always did it together,” says Flora.

Since they attended different elementary

school at the time, the end of tap classes threatened to cut short their friendship, but they soon found they had more in common than dance and their similar-sounding names.

They’re both gifted learners, and they were reunited this year in the Burnaby school district’s multi-age cluster class (MACC) pilot at Capitol Hill.

“We just ended up in the same class and saw that we knew each other,” Floria says.

When the pair first found out about the city’s Christmas card contest, they wanted to work on it together, but they were told it was an individual project, so they cheered each other on instead.

This is the second year Burnaby city council has given Grade 5 students in the city a chance to get a work of art featured on the greeting cards mayor and council send out during the holiday season.

The only criteria is that the design has to feature the word “Burnaby” and represent the festive season in the city.

“I always thought Christmas was really fun and happy, so then I looked around my house and saw all the different decorations,” says Flora, describing the inspiration for her drawing.

“I was just thinking about what Christmas was,” says Floria.

The two winners were honoured during a council meeting at city hall Dec. 8 and presented with T-shirts featuring their designs, 25 Christmas cards each, a City of Burnaby mug and other swag.

Floria described the event as a “glorious time,” and meeting the mayor was a highlight for both girls.

“I thought he was pretty nice and funny,” Flora said.

More free golf in 2015 Jacob Zinn

City officials and former city politicians will continue to receive free tee times and recreation passes in 2015.

On Wednesday, the Parks, Recreation and Culture Commission approved its list of recipients for its complimentary passes, which grants city officials free access to city-owned facilities such as recreation centres, swimming pools and golf courses. The passes are issued to current and former councillors, commissioners, school trustees, library board members and freemen of the city.

Earlier this year, the NOW published a breakdown of 2013’s pass spending: Use of the passes amounted to $47,275.78, the majority of which ($41,904.59) was for golf at the Riverway and Burnaby Mountain courses. The program has a yearly limit of $50,000.

The top spenders included parks commissioner Wayne Peppard ($7,898.24), former commissioner Jim Kozak ($6,354.51), Mayor Derek Corrigan ($5,717.65), Coun.

Colleen Jordan ($4,674.20) and then-school trustee James Wang ($3,518.10). Current

councillors and commissioners are permitted an unrestricted number of guests while other recipients are allowed one guest each.

Before approving the list, Coun. Pietro Calendino stressed that not all recipients make use of their passes, and that the passes are meant to acknowledge the work of current and former city officials.

“I think it needs to be said that even though we do provide the passes to past commissioners, councillors, etc., that not all of them take advantage of the pass,” he told the commission. “It’s just a courtesy we give them as recognition that they have served in our community.”

Coun. Sav Dhaliwal, who chairs the parks commission, agreed, noting the complimentary passes have been in place for three decades.

Most of the names on the 2015 list are repeats from last year, but there are a few additions. Newly elected school trustee Katrina Chen was added to the list, as was now former councillor Richard Chang.

Additionally, some names have been removed, including late councillor Doug Evans.

Big Bend area gets new bus service At long last, the Big Bend area has finally received some much-needed bus service, thanks to advocacy by the Burnaby Board of Trade and Alpha Technologies.

In January, the BBOT paired with the power solutions company to cohost a transit forum, inviting Burnaby businesses to express their concerns and ideas with TransLink.

Those comments and the high demand for transit prompted city council to approve a service increase in South Burnaby in September.

“As the voice of business in Burnaby, the BBOT

has a mandate to advocate on issues that are important to our membership and the entire business community,” stated BBOT president and CEO Paul Holden Monday. “We’re particularly pleased with this initiative because of its direct positive impact for companies in the Big Bend neighbourhood and their more than 2,500 employees.”

To accommodate the increased service, TransLink’s route 116 bus now travels along North Fraser Way, east of Byrne Road, to Marine Way. With 10 new stops on the route, the 116 bus drops off and

picks up passengers within walking distance of most businesses in the Big Bend area.

“TransLink wants to find ways to better connect people, ease congestion and provide convenient travel choices across the region,” said Tim Savoie, TransLink’s vice-president of transportation strategy.

“We heard from customers in this area, and by working with business organizations like the Burnaby Board of Trade, we were able to better understand the needs of the community and identify this solution.”

I’m dreaming of a white (chocolate) Christmas ON MY BEAT Jacob Zinn

C

hocolate might be a year-round treat, but there’s something about Christmas that makes it sweeter.

Local chocolatiers seem to put a little something extra into their desserts for the holidays, making for one-of-a-kind confections that everyone will make room for, no matter how much turkey they’ve eaten.

For Christophe Bonzon, owner of Chez Christophe Chocolaterie Patisserie in Burnaby Heights, it’s only natural to have seasonal offerings. The exquisite chocolate shop has a handful of Christmas-specific delicacies, which have been in the making for some time.

“We start doing some design and research in October for December,” he said. “We try different designs, different shapes – it’s a lot of work to get it right. We really do something custom for people who want a different gift instead of getting a box of chocolate.”

This year, Bonzon created edible showpieces of

a snowman, a reindeer, a Christmas tree and a broken ornament. It’s something he’s done for other holidays as well, such as Easter and Halloween.

“We import our chocolate directly from Switzerland,” he said.

“We are the only one in Canada having this brand of chocolate, so it’s kind of unique. We create everything from scratch.

“We do cakes, pastries, croissants, and as well, we have a quite wide assortment of chocolate.”

But Bonzon isn’t strictly a chocolatier – he’s worked at various bakeries and pastry shops for the last 16 years, and he’s prepared not one, but three types of postChristmas dinner desserts.

“It’s our yule log – our bûche de Noël – and we have one with three layers of different chocolates,” he said. “We have another one, which is called a montblanc – it’s a chestnut mousse with chestnuts, and a sponge soaked in Vanier syrup.

“The last type is gingerbread and a cinnamon mousse with a spicy apple jelly on the gingerbread sponge. It’s a real traditional dessert in Switzerland and it’s a great dessert for Christmas.”

Christmas lessons from a two-year-old

I

’m learning about Christmas this year from an expert. She’s tiny and blonde and has big blue eyes that are always wide open, taking in the magic of the world around her – and a cute little mouth that can’t stop flapping with the excitement of sharing that world in words.

She’s not quite two-and-a-half years old, but she’s got this Christmas thing nailed.

When it comes to Christmas spirit, my daughter has a whole bunch of lessons for FAMILY TIES Julie MacLellan those of us who are older and supposedly wiser than her.

She’s not racing frantically around trying to make Christmas magical. Because, you see, she’s already figured out the simple truth: Christmas just is magical, and all we have to do is let it happen.

She couldn’t care less whether the house is clean, whether the baking is done, whether there are just-right presents wrapped just-so under the justdelightful tree. (Which is good, because if you know anything about me you’ll know that she sure as heck didn’t get Martha Stewart for a mother.) She’s not worrying about buying the perfect outfit to wear to the umpteenth holiday party or throwing the perfect shindig to impress co-workers and friends. She’s not bothered what anyone else thinks of her state of readiness for the holidays – or lack thereof.

She’s just taking in the world with wide-eyed wonder.

“Look, Mommy, Christmas!”

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard that refrain over the past few weeks. Sometimes it’s in response to something big, like the giant Christmas tree at Herbert Spencer School in New West. More often, though, it’s in response to something relatively small. The snowmen decorations sitting on the shelf at the coffee shop. The dancing Santa by the door at daycare. The string of coloured lights on the neighbours’ eaves that she can see from her bedroom window. The “Jolly J’s” (that’s candy canes, for those uninitiated in Charlottespeak) that adorn a house up the street. The fir trees standing in a row at Home Depot. Even, on one occasion, a small piece of discarded wrapping paper on the sidewalk.

And don’t forget the music. She’s picked up on a couple of Christmas carols – ask her to sing Jingle Bells or Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, and she’ll give it a good shot. She’s not much concerned

whether she’s in tune, whether she has the words right or whether you’re enjoying what she’s singing. She’s just belting it out because, well, it’s the thing to do, and she likes it, and singing is how you express joy. That, and dancing – put on a tune, and she’ll spin her little heart out in response.

Each tiny moment in her world is greeted with the kind of enthusiasm most of us reserve for the so-called “big” things in life. She has no idea what she’s “supposed” to do for the holidays – she’s just experiencing everything around her with the same zest she brings to life yearround.

She expects nothing. And, as a consequence, she enjoys everything.

Sure, we’ve given her some Christmas experiences. We’ve gone for a little night lights display tour (which is to say, we

walked a few of our favourite blocks in our neighbourhood, where many of the homeowners decorate for the holidays).

We went to the Santa Claus Parade in New Westminster and checked out the fun at River Market and the Anvil Centre.

And, most memorably of all for my wideeyed child, we rode the Christmas train at Stanley Park and took in the Bright Nights experience.

Every single one of those things has been worth it for the wonder in her eyes and the joy in her babble afterwards as she recounts her experiences to Mommy and Daddy.

But you know what she talks about most? Not seeing the parade so much as the fact that she went downtown with her little BFF. And the Christmas train?

Yeah, that was great. But what was more fun was going to see her “auntie” and

“uncle” afterwards and play with her biggirl friend.

It hasn’t occurred to her to think about “stuff.”

She’s received a couple of Christmas presents so far, and she’s happily latched on to one of them – a little stuffed reindeer. She loves it with the same dogged devotion she gives to a rather eclectic assortment of treasured possessions, including a little pink plastic ring that once adorned a birthday cupcake, and the Little People family known in our house as “Plastic Mommy,” “Plastic Daddy” and “Plastic Charlotte.”

But she doesn’t have any clue that Christmas is meant to involve filling your house with fancy presents wrapped in fancy paper.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Thank you for making the Christmas season brighter Dear Editor:

The Christmas spirit means many things to different people. It can be as simple as volunteering to help a family with low income chose the perfect gift for their child, or as meaningful as reaching out to an isolated senior to let them know they are not alone. For parents struggling to balance multiple part-time jobs, rent, before- and after-school care, and paying all the other bills, it can be one less thing to worry about and a reason to celebrate.

For new Canadians, it can be a warm welcome to a strange land when you are trying to start over.

Or, it can be the anticipation of a child on Christmas Eve, hoping that Rudolf can find her home; and the magic of the morning when only crumbles and carrot tops remain from what was left out for Santa and his reindeer.

For all of us the Christmas spirit can be about more than what we have and want.

It can be about what we can do for each other, what is possible when we work together. It is the one time of year when we imagine a world without child poverty, when we want break down barriers for people in need, and when we feel a deeper

sense of community that surrounds us with carols, lights, and a common purpose to do good.

This sense of sharing is what makes the Burnaby Christmas Bureau so special.

Thousands of donors, volunteers, local businesses, employees, unions and institutions give to help those in need. The community comes together to make sure Christmas is a magical time of year.

We are so grateful to all those who support the program by donating gifts for children and parents, books and sports equipment, and hampers full of holiday cheer. Thank you to the army of volunteers that spend hours picking up toys throughout the city, sorting, and “elfing” in the toy room. Also to all those groups that sponsor families and seniors, or host Angel Projects collecting gifts for children.

I would also like to express by sincere appreciation to Jennifer Moreau and all the staff at the Burnaby NOW. The articles throughout the season and ads provided help to spread the Christmas spirit. They tell the stories of how and why people give, the impact of their generosity and how each of us can make our community better.

Merry Christmas to everyone and best wishes in the New Year.

parents for Christmas (although, undoubtedly, her rather doting grandparents will make up for it).

But she won’t feel the lack of anything.

She has no inkling of the desire for bigger.

Better. Brighter. Shinier.

More.

She just loves her toys and her home and her room and her family and her friends – and her life – with a fierceness that all of us should strive to emulate.

So if the holidays

are stressing you out, here’s my advice: enjoy Christmas like a two-yearold: with wide eyes and a sense of wonder.

Spend time with people you care about. Walk around your neighbourhood and look at the lights. Curl up with a book in your living room and admire your own Christmas tree – especially if it’s not quite standing straight and if it’s decorated with an eclectic assortment of not-prettybut-special-to-your-family decorations.

Above all, take time out

of whatever it is you’re doing to just enjoy it.

Forget the house. Forget the shopping. Forget the presents. Forget the hullabaloo.

Just sing. And dance.

And enjoy. And be.

Just for a little while, let yourself experience the world like a two-year-old.

Trust me, it’s a lot more fun than trying to be this season’s answer to Martha Stewart.

Chocolate: Charlie’s is another option for sweets continued from page 5

Bonzon, it’s a dream come true to live and work in North Burnaby.

“When we looked where to open our place, downtown is really expensive,” he recalled. “A lot of our customers are from Burnaby, Port Moody, Coquitlam, so they don’t have to drive downtown to get more premier product.

“For us, we think we made the right choice by doing that and the people are happy that we are here. This neighbourhood, there’s a lot of nice places – the Peartree, Cioffi’s – and slowly, we are becoming a destination.”

Chez Christophe isn’t the only destination for sweet, chocolate treats in the city.

Charlie Sigvardsen has been running Charlie’s Chocolate Factory on Canada Way off Boundary Road for almost 43 years.

The name of the store, obviously, is a take on the 1964 Roald Dahl children’s book – but it didn’t start

out that way.

“When we started, we opened the store in Gastown, and right across the street was the Old Spaghetti Factory,” he said.

“We were going to call ours the Chocolate Factory, and the government wouldn’t register it. They said that was too common a name.

“Somebody I was working with said, ‘My boys are reading a book at school about Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Your name’s Charlie – why not call it Charlie’s Chocolate Factory?’”

Sigvardsen essentially found his golden ticket, having run his own chocolate shop for more than four decades. He uses imported Callebaut chocolate from Belgium – because “Europeans know how to make good chocolate” – but he’s also known for molding chocolate into all kinds of shapes and designs.

He has chocolate soccer balls, iPhones, even a Viagra-shaped chocolate.

He’s even made a 193pound chocolate heart for the Variety Club.

That type of ingenuity comes out at Christmas, with chocolate snowmen, wreaths, Christmas lights and candy canes all over the store. New to their Christmas lineup this year is a chocolate reindeer, made with a chocolatedipped marshmallow and chocolate-covered pretzels.

“Ellen, our granddaughter, she developed that this year,” said Sigvardsen.

“It’s been very popular.”

And keeping with the store’s own tradition, they recently had their annual giveaway of a chocolate Santa, worth $195.

At 84, Sigvardsen is certainly old enough to retire, but it seems he doesn’t want to. He’s a kid at heart in a candy store – why would he want to leave?

“I explain to the children that come in that I feel I’m the lucky Charlie who ended up with the chocolate factory,” he said.

“I do it now to have fun at it.”

Bobcat spotted again near Deer Lake Jacob Zinn

Deer Lake Park’s coastal bobcat has been sighted again, and it’s venturing into more urban areas.

Alicia Brady-Deaust said her parents’ neighbour saw the predatory creature in the northwest part of the woods, just south of Deer Lake Parkway. It was approaching the surrounding neighbourhood, following a gravel path before heading back into the forest.

“They were home and they got a phone call from the neighbours saying, ‘Be careful if you’re going outside because we’ve just seen a cougar or something,’” she said.

“I grew up at that house and I’ve seen coyotes, but not even on our street. You’ll hear them in the woods, or if you’re walking in Deer Lake you may catch sight of one, but this was quite bold, being out where it was.”

Brady-Deaust said she’s seen signs in the area warning of the bobcat in the park, but never expected it to go near people’s homes. She said she fears development is causing habitat fragmentation, in which environmental areas are cut down to make room for roads and buildings.

“It just occurs to me that we’ve never seen these types of things before – certainly you wouldn’t expect to see this kind of thing in Burnaby,” she said. “I’ve seen some not-so-good-looking coyotes in the last while in and around Burnaby, and all of that just kind of made me think this is part of a bigger issue.”

But conservation officer Jack Trudgian said the bobcat may stray outside of the forest while preying on other animals.

“It could be chasing rabbits, skunks, raccoons,” he said, noting that bobcats are nocturnal and typically hunt at night or early in the morning. “They may get cut off in urban areas, but this one seems to always find its way back to Deer Lake.”

The bobcat is believed to be the only one in the Deer Lake area, according to Trudgian. He said it may have come from up on Burnaby Mountain and settled down

“There’s lots of food sources for him there, so that’s probably why he keeps sticking around. He’s got the place to himself.”

Trudgian said he regularly receives calls about the bobcat, but noted it’s not a threat to the public.

“We’re not saying it couldn’t be dangerous, but really, bobcats are way in the lower end of any type of public threat,” he said. “Just leave it alone and let it move its way on wherever it’s going.”

Nonetheless, Brady-Deaust said she’ll be a bit more cautious the next time she visits her parents.

“I stopped there yesterday … and getting out of the car in their driveway was a different experience,” she said. “I was looking around to make sure of my surroundings.”

Eat, drink and be merry in Burnaby

C

hristmas dinner at home is great and all, but cooking that 25-pound turkey is a lot of work, not to mention all the sides that go with it.

So how about going out somewhere over the holidays and let someone else cook? We asked a few Burnaby residents where they like to go to eat, drink and be merry over the Christmas season. Here’s what they had to say!

Ready to make merry:

Todd Polich

Mural artist Todd Polich outside the Great Bear Pub – one of his favourite spots in Burnaby for a night out. He welcomes the pub’s food selections and the quiet atmosphere of its back room.

Local mural artist Todd Polich had a few places to recommend for good eats, namely the Mountain Shadow Pub in North Burnaby.

“It’s a nice warm environment in this really rustic, old house – it’s just got this great feel to it and I think it’s a ON MY BEAT Jacob Zinn really creative environment,” he said. “They have a good flatbread pizza at Mountain Shadow.”

From the bar, Polich said he usually goes for a tonic and lime, but over the winter, he likes to warm up with some spiced rum and ginger ale.

Likewise, he said the Great Bear Pub on Kingsway has some good food selections and has a nice quiet atmosphere for some of his mural meetings.

“They’ve got this really cool back room that’s a little bit isolated – you can have good conversations there. It’s got a nice vibe.”

Burnaby Coun. Anne Kang had some ideas for the young ones, picking out the Burnaby Village Museum as a great place to be merry.

“There’s good sightseeing, great fun for the kids,” she said. “We saw the lights and did the scavenger hunt and we had ice cream, even though it was very cold.”

While her kids are partial to the oldfashioned ice cream – “My kids go for the strawberry, so I don’t really focus on the other flavours,” she said with a laugh.

She said it’s her family’s tradition to get chicken strips and fries at the village.

But ultimately, she said she takes her kids there for the heartwarming bonding experience.

“There are artists either telling stories or singing – there’s lots for families to do,” she said.

Burnaby blues man Steve Kozak, who lives in Metrotown, said he frequents the Earl’s on Kingsway near Willingdon for a good meal or some drinks.

“It’s a good place for happy hour,” he said with a chuckle. “It’s within walking distance and we enjoy going over there.

“We go to the Keg once in a while, too, down at the bottom of Willingdon. That

seems to be a good spot. As you can tell, I like a good steak.”

Kozak added that there aren’t too many venues in Burnaby to perform and see live music, but he’d love for more to pop up.

Mark Tsemak

Aside from his own healthy products, Mark Tsemak, the owner of South Burnaby’s Red Square Bakery admits he’s more of a homemade kind of guy.

“I’m the guy that cooks at home,” he said. “I go grocery shopping, I see a meal

already in front of me, and I buy the ingredients and cook at home.”

But he noted he likes some good Japanese food, like the cuisine of Black Dragon Sushi, which has gone above and beyond to serve healthy meals.

“I gave the manager, Kevin, the recipe to do cauliflower instead of rice, and he did such a fantastic job,” he said.

“Diabetics can eat that, and they cannot eat rice.

“Some people listen to consumers and want to please them.”

Income-based prescription plans working in Quebec pharmaceutical costs for seniors.

“Pharmaceutical policy is particularly prone to agerelated financial pressures – not so much on a system as a whole, but on governments,” Morgan said.

As people retire from working life, responsibility for paying drug costs had historically passed from private insurers to the public purse.

By adopting an incomebased approach to pharmaceutical coverage for people of all ages in 2003, B.C. managed to halt fastrising public drug costs at about $200 per person.

That burden was transferred to employers and private insurers, which now pay upward of $400 per person, up from $200 before the policy switch, the authors say.

In B.C., families that don’t have private insurance with a net income of at least $30,000 a year pay their own drug costs up to three per cent of their income before the provincial Fair PharmaCare system begins to subsidize those costs. The deductible for families including one member born before 1939 is two per cent of income: at least $1,000 if they earn more than $50,000.

“What that means is that, unlike people in other provinces, many more British Columbians are paying drug costs out of their pocket,” Morgan said.

Faced with paying the full price of prescriptions until the minimum threshold of $1,000, seniors are less likely to fill prescriptions for common psychiatric, cardiac and asthma medications, according to research conducted in B.C., Morgan noted.

Several Canadian studies have found British Columbians were twice as likely to report skipping medications for financial reasons (7.1 per cent, according to one study)

compared to seniors in Ontario, where their drug costs are minimal.

When people skip medications for chronic conditions, the costs tend to turn up in other parts of the health-care system, such as more frequent hospitalization.

The IRPP study calls on provinces to provide “full and universal” coverage of prescription drug costs and says income-based plans fail to provide people with adequate access to medications and ensure that the financial burden associated with drug costs is fairly distributed.

But a second study released by the C.D. Howe Institute notes that Quebecers report the lowest levels of prescriptionskipping in the country, even though their public drug plan is income-based.

“The difference is that in Quebec, people pay (monthly) premiums for drug coverage that are income-based, so people aren’t faced with paying all their costs until they hit that deductible,” author

Colin Busby said. “There are a lot of ways to build income-based plans.”

Age-based plans tend to benefit seniors at the expense of working-age families, who may be liable for all their pharmaceutical costs and less able to afford them, Busby said.

He is skeptical that the political will exists in Canada to bring about a universal national drug program. “People have been advocating for universal plans like the one suggested by the IRPP paper for decades, but it hasn’t come about because of the

unwillingness of governments to either raise taxes or reduce spending to pay for it,” he said.

Morgan argues that the absence of a national approach to pharmacare is a huge missed opportunity to drive down drug costs.

The Moscrop Panthers high school senior girls’ volleyball team went out winners despite having no provincial title banner to show for it in 2014.

The Panther girls capped a glowing high school career together on the hardcourt with five consecutive BurWest district banners since competing together as Grade 8s, a Lower Mainland runner-up finish in provincial qualifying and sixth place at the B.C. quad A championships in December.

Moscrop just missed a top-four finish, losing a marathon five-set tiebreaker to Handsworth in the quarter-finals, the same team they beat under similar circumstances in the Mainland semifinal.

Senior Ernestine Tiamzon and Grade 11 Isabella Cheung were both singled out as second team all-stars following the provincials.

But more important than all the individual and on-court honours were the ways the girls unselfishly gave back to the sport, said the team’s only coach.

The girls had a long history of volunteering and helping out during their time at Moscrop, including many who had similar success coaching juvenile and junior school volleyball teams to city titles.

Teamwork: A dedication to team, togetherness and the sport of volleyball made the Moscrop Panthers the Burnaby NOW’s high school team in 2014.

“They all gave back to the Moscrop volleyball program,” said Kim Or,

who will step away from volunteer coaching at Moscrop after more than a

decade. “The whole team put in so much work all year. It made it really,

really wonderful. It was a really good ending after all.”

Aged up rookie righthander Tyler Vogrig had a real coming-of-age start to his B.C. junior A lacrosse career.

The 18-year-old first overall draft pick of the Burnaby Lakers was a breath of fresh air after last season’s 1-20-0 finish.

The freshman talent finished 10th in B.C. league scoring and was sixth overall in points per game average following a 33-goal, 67-point debut in junior A. “I came here to make a difference,” said Vogrig, “and the coaches here are helping me make that difference.”

All-tournament in debut

Grade 9 Burnaby Central student Emma Regan was named an all-tournament all-star following Canada’s national team title win at the inaugural CONCACAF under-15 girls’ soccer championships in the Cayman Islands in August.

The 14-year-old converted Mountain United FC midfielder was moved to the back line and became a stalwart on defence, starting in five

of Canada’s six games, including a 4-1 shootout win over Haiti in the championship final.

“Every game I think I got better,” said Regan. “It’s a great experience to represent Canada. If I can do it again, I will, of course.”

New skaters on the block

Brianna Delmaestro and Timothy Lum of Burnaby posted the best Canadian junior ice dance score in 2014 following a gold-medal performance at the Skate Canada Challenge in December.

The newest Champs International Skating Centre pair posted a best-ever 141.64 points at Skate Canada, bettering their previous personal best – achieved in a silver-medal performance at the ISU Junior Grand Prix in Slovenia in September – by more than 10 points. “(Timothy) definitely brings a lot of energy to our sessions,” said Delmaestro. “It makes things fun.”

A soccer career ahead of him

Young soccer talent Damiano Pecile of Burnaby got a huge boost in his career, earning a tryout invitation with AC Milan in August.

The 12-year-old midfielder helped the Burnaby Selects under-13 Metro league team win a provincial team title, while also representing Canada on Team West at the Danone Nations Cup world final in Sao Paulo, Brazil in November.

“It’s like a dream come true, going to Brazil and respresenting Canada and playing in front of thousands of fans,” Pecile said.

No surprise here

Canadian national team star Christine Sinclair was named Canada Soccer’s female player of the year for the 12th time and 11th in a row since 2004.

The national women’s team captain, played every minute in Canada’s 11 international matches this year and will headline the team as hosts at the 2015 women’s World Cup, which begins in June.

Sinclair also scored seven times for the Portland Thorns in the National Women’s Soccer League last season.

“Christine has been a remarkably influential figure for women’s football … throughout the years,” said Soccer Canada president Victor Montagliani in a press release.

The Northwest Giants wrapped up their 2014 B.C. Major Midget hockey league schedule on a positive note.

After last week’s backto-back losses over eighthplace Fraser Valley, the Giants bounced back, taking three out of a possible four points from the current second-place overall Okanagan Rockets at home.

The Giants won the opening game 3-2 over the Rockets at the Burnaby Winter Club on Saturday.

The two teams then played to a 2-2 draw in the Sunday morning rematch.

Keegan Jones supplied the eventual game-winning goal in the opener, knocking home the Giants’ second goal of the middle period in the final seconds of the frame.

Desi Burgart had given the home team a 2-0 lead, including an unassisted marker to lead off the second period.

On Sunday, affiliate player Jason Village started things off for the Giants, tallying his first of the year midway through the opening period.

Nash Dabb got the gametying goal for the Giants from Jones and Austin McQuay after Okanagan had struck back with two of its own in the second and third periods.

The three points put the Giants in third place in a tightly packed race for the top-five positions in the standings.

The Cariboo Cougars lead the 11-team pack with a record of 22-3-1 and 45 points, but the other five teams are all tightly bunched, with six points separating second from fifth place.

The Giants improved their record to 16-71, just three points back of the Rockets, who fell nine points behind the firstplace Cougars in the race for top spot in the major midget league.

The Giants will be taking part in the Mac’s midget tournament in Calgary over the holidays.

Steelers hold on to third place The Grandview Steelers giveth and they taketh away.

The junior B Steelers were in the spirit of giving last week, handing the league-leading Richmond Sockeyes a 5-2 victory at Richmond Arena on Dec. 18.

At home, the Giants decided to act a bit more like Scrooge, earning the Pacific Junior Hockey League club its 14th win of the year following a 3-1 win over the Langley Knights.

First star Peter Matthews played the role of Ebenezer, setting up newcomer Maximillian Fritz for his second goal as a Steeler before tallying the eventual game-winner in the final minute of the opening period with his first shorthanded goal of the year.

Winter Safety Tips We all want what’s best for our family and the Burnaby Fire Department shares your concerns. Here are some of the ways to avoid unnecessary winter hazards.

Christmas Trees Natural Christmas Trees:

• Before buying a tree test for freshness by tapping the base of the tree on the ground or pulling lightly on a limb. If many needles fall off or needles can be easily pulled off, the tree is too dry.

• Keep your tree as fresh as possible by placing the stump of the tree in a bucket of water outdoors until you are ready to decorate.

Before setting up the tree inside the house, trim two inches off the stem diagonally so it can absorb water. Mount the tree securely in a large, wide-based reservoir stand and add water each day to ensure the tree is well watered.

• Choose a suitable location for your tree, ensuring that it is well away from heating sources and clear of all exits.

• Christmas trees start about 250 fires annually according to the National Fire Protection Association.

• For safety’s sake stand your tree away from fireplaces, radiators and heaters. Make sure the tree does not block hallways or doorways.

Artificial Trees:

• Artificial trees with built-in lighting should have the label of an independent testing laboratory and labeled as fire resistant. Never use candles to decorate the tree.

A somewhat condensed Burnaby bantam hockey tournament will get started on Saturday at the Bill Copeland Sports Centre.

This year, nine teams, including the host Burnaby Minor Bulldogs, will vie for the 52nd annual Bantam Classic trophy.

Four days of bantam hockey kicks off a 9 a.m. at the Burnaby Lake and Copeland arenas.

Burnaby Minor opens against South Delta at 2:15 p.m. on the Copeland rink and plays again at 7 p.m. against Surrey.

On Sunday, Burnaby takes on Port Coquitlam at 1:45 p.m. in Burnaby Lake Arena.

The quarter-finals will take place on Monday, Dec. 29 with morning matchups at 8:30 and 11 a.m.

Evening semifinals will follow at 6:30 p.m. on both rinks.

The medal games take place on Tuesday, with the gold-medal match starting at 1 p.m.

• Always unplug the light string before attempting to replace bulb.

• Avoid using timers on indoor lights. Tree lights could turn on when no one is at home and create a potential fire hazard. Always turn Christmas lights off before leaving home or going to sleep.
