RCMP euthanize injured deer on mountain Cornelia Naylor

Burnaby Mounties had to shoot an injured deer that played havoc with traffic on GaglardiWayTuesday. SFU security got a call at about 11:40 a.m. that a deer had been struck on the road between University Drive and Broadway and was posing a hazard to vehicles driving up and down Burnaby Mountain. Security personnel were dispatched to the scene to control traffic, according to SFU communications associate JustinWong.

“They had their patrol vehicle parked on the side of the road with its amber emergency lights flashing when our vehicle was struck from behind by another car,” he said. Emergency vehicles then arrived on the scene, and a woman was transported to hospital with minor injuries, according to Burnaby RCMP. Gaglardi was briefly shut down in both directions. The injured deer, meanwhile, had slumped into a water-filled ditch nearby on the side of the east side of Gaglardi. “It was quite traumatic for everyone,”

said Burnaby resident John Preissl, a local streamkeeper who had been taking photos of construction at the Kinder Morgan Trans Mountain facility nearby. Preissl, who is of Squamish and Leq’á:mel First Nations extraction, said he’d asked RCMP officers at the scene if he could say prayers and perform a smudging ceremony for the injured deer but was denied. Officers told him to leave the scene, he said, and he walked about 400 metres away to say prayers and perform the ceremony at a distance. He then heard three shots ring out, he

said. “It was really sad,” he said. RCMP said the deer was euthanized in consultation with the B.C. conservation service and that Preissl had been asked to move away for safety reasons. “For public safety reasons, the male was asked to maintain a safe distance while the deer was being euthanized,” Cpl. Daniela Panesar told the NOW in an emailed statement. “Should the male have any concern about his interaction with police, then we ask that he contact the Burnaby RCMP Professional Standards Unit.”

SALMON RUN: Mother Nature turned on the charm for the annual Eagle Creek Streamkeepers salmon fry release event, held Saturday, April 21 at Charles Rummel Park. The National Energy Board (NEB) has approved Trans Mountain’s pipeline path through Burnaby, but not every board member is completely satisfied with the route the project will take and the methods that will be used to build it. Work will not begin on

the pipeline expansion until every segment is approved. The NEB came down with decisions on two of the detailed route hearings Thursday – one for the City of Burnaby and another for eight residents – that dealt with objections to the pipeline path through the city and the way it will be constructed. In its statement of oppo-

sition, the City of Burnaby discussed six sections of land, including through the Brunette River Conservation Area, around the existing tank farm on Burnaby Mountain, near Lougheed Highway and Government Road, near Lougheed Highway and GaglardiWay, along Eastlake Drive, and the already approved tunnel between the terminal at

Burnaby Mountain and the Westridge Marine terminal. While the NEB approved both the path and the pipeline build methods, board member Shane Parrish said he could not determine whether the route through the conservation area was appropriate. Trans Mountain previously indicated that, should it go through that conservation area, it would use a trenchless method of construction, which would result in fewer trees being cut

down through the park, preserve creeks, and allow the pipeline to go under an existing sewer. But Burnaby argued that, once the pipeline had been approved,Trans Mountain gave up on this less-invasive construction method. “Trans Mountain has not demonstrated whether a trenchless method … is feasible,” Parrish wrote in his dissenting opinion. “I would expect Trans Mountain to make efforts to follow through on its word to

use trenchless construction technology in the conservation areas, notwithstanding Burnaby’s refusal to issue a permit in a timely manner.” Parrish wrote the lack of a feasibility assessment didn’t give him enough information to properly assess whether the route through the conservation area or this construction method was appropriate. The B.C. government filed a reference question with the B.C. Court of Appeal Thursday morning to find out whether it has jurisdiction to regulate hazardous materials coming into the province, including oil carried by pipeline. The question asks if the province can create a law that requires those transporting hazardous materials like diluted bitumen to obtain a hazardous substance permit. Getting a permit would mean meeting a set of environmental requirements, including information on risks to human health and the environment, and how the company would prevent and clean up after a spill.

The government is also asking for the power to file a restraining order on anyone who transports heavy oil above a certain quantity without a permit.Those who violate that law could see fines of up to $400,000 or six months in prison. This reference question will now go to the B.C. Court of Appeal, asking for the court to weigh in on the government of British Columbia’s rights to make laws around protecting against bitumen spills. Attorney General David Eby said the government is asking the courts whether it has the jurisdiction to control substances coming in to B.C. that could harm the environment, regardless of how that substance enters the province, and whether these laws could be overruled by the federal government. “We believe B.C. has the

ability to regulate movement of these substances through the province,” he said. “This reference question seeks to confirm the scope and extent of provincial powers to regulate environmental and economic risks related to heavy oils like diluted bitumen.” Eby said the question purposely excludes language about tankers because they are under federal jurisdiction. But the question is unlikely to be answered by May 31 – the deadline Kinder Morgan has set for “final clarity” in order to move forward with the Trans Mountain pipeline expansion. Premier John Horgan noted that his government announced in February that they would be referring to a higher court to confirm the province has jurisdiction over creating environmental protections. “I don’t work for Kinder Morgan, I work for the people of British Columbia,” he said. “The fact a press release was issued from a Texas boardroom giving a deadline to parties in British Columbia, stakeholders as they called them, is entirely their business, and I have no quarrel with that.We have set ourselves on a course to protect and defend the interests of the people of B.C., and I’m going to continue to do that.” Provincial Environment Minister George Heyman said the province is looking at how to protect the economy and the environment by having effective spill prevention, response and recovery measures in place. “A single spill of diluted bitumen would put at risk tens of thousands of jobs across B.C.We have a responsibility to ensure that every measure to reduce risk is in place, and that those responsible for spills are held accountable for fixing any environmental damage they cause,” Heyman said.

Construction workers and neighbours had to be evacuated Tuesday after a “stubborn” house fire in Metrotown spread to a house under construction next door and threatened the home next to that. Burnaby fire crews were called to 6890 Gray Ave. at about 12:10 p.m. to find thick black smoke pouring from a 104-year-old, singlestorey, wood-frame house. The fire had started in a lean-to attached to the right side of the building, according to assistant fire Chief Gavin Summers. “It got roaring up the siding, inside the lean-to, inside the structure of the house,” he said. The fire also spread to a house under construction next door, he said, and workers had to be evacuated, along with residents of the house next to it.

With plenty of fuel to feed the fire at the unfinished home and no drywall to slow it down, Summers said firefighters pulled off an “unbelievable save.” “Usually when we get a house under construction and fire gets a hold of a house, unless we’re able to really get lots of water on it real fast, it’s going to burn to the ground.These guys did a phenomenal job saving it,” Summers said. No one was injured in the blaze.The occupant at 6890 Gray Ave. got out safely and called 911, but the fire there was a stubborn one, according to Summers. “It was into the structure itself,” he said. “A lot of fires are just room and contents, so it’s easy to knock down the fire.” The fire department was on scene until about 6 p.m. About 45 firefighters and 14 trucks responded. The fire is under investigation.

Here are a few ground rules for election season Though the real campaign period is still months away, it’s safe to say Burnaby’s municipal election race is already underway. We already know that the Burnaby Greens will be lining up candidates in an effort to break the Burnaby Citizens Association’s stranglehold on city council and school board positions. They will undoubtedly be joined by a host of other local folks looking for

elected office – or, possibly, just looking for a chance to make their voices heard during the campaign. We don’t know, yet, who all those folks will be. But whoever they are, we have to confess:We’re nerdily and goofily excited that it’s an election year. From a newspapering point of view, there’s something extra satisfying about a year when local elected officials are hyper-aware of

We need everyone’s help to ensure our electoral system delivers the best government we can get. the fact their actions are all coming under public scrutiny – and when their critics are equally aware that now’s their chance to make hay with those elected officials’ perceived shortcomings and

on the record right here, right now, in asking all our local candidates to please play nice. You remember all those great life rules you learned in kindergarten? Take turns. Share. B.C. should get a say in pipeline

The Kinder Morgan Trans Mountain pipeline project is an emotional issue, to say the least.The recent arrests of Elizabeth May and Kennedy Stewart at a major demonstration for doing their job as MPs have sparked further debate on social licence regarding projects under federal jurisdiction. A federal court has rejected the City of Burnaby’s appeal, and this suggests a serious flaw in the foundations on which Canada was built.What is the point of having elected representatives to enact laws and regulations if Ottawa can ignore them as it pleases? This is very much an issue in British Columbia, with the Kinder Morgan project that threatens its unique ecosystems, but it also applies to all other provinces. I would like to propose a response. Constitutionally, the territory belongs to B.C.ers. Its occupation, use, development and protection are governed by the laws and regulations of the province and the municipalities.Victoria has every right to enact legislation designed to protect what makes that province unique, as voters there are demanding. Certain activities and pieces of infrastructure can basically circumvent those laws because they are federally regulated: wharves, ports, airports, telecommunication infrastructure, federal properties and, yes, pipelines. Based on the principle of the separation of powers, when the federal government takes any action in those areas falling

under the legislative authority of the federal Parliament, the provinces cannot force it to comply with their laws. Jurisprudence to that effect was a clear sign that Burnaby would likely lose its appeal of the National Energy Board decision that allows Kinder Morgan to bypass municipal bylaws to build the Trans Mountain pipeline.The same fate likely awaits the municipality if the case goes before the Supreme Court. The Trudeau government is further strengthening those federal powers in Bill C-69, which reforms the environmental assessment process for projects.That is why I want to draw attention to another bill I introduced that I firmly believe is in the best interest of British Columbia. Bill C-392 amends eight federal acts to impose constraints on the ministers responsible for enforcing them. Once this bill passes, the federal government will no longer be able to authorize any activity or infrastructure project that would violate provincial laws or municipal bylaws. In other words, the government would be forced to respect the provinces’ environmental processes before approving any projects under its jurisdiction, including pipelines. It also means that the government must have the support of the people, including First Nations. These principles would apply to all federal initiatives in provincial territory. Unexploded mortar no joke

The RCMP’s bomb squad was called to a wooded area two blocks from Moscrop Secondary in February to monitor what appeared to be an unexploded mortar.The device was found in the bush near the corner of Huxley Avenue and Spruce Street.The ordinance appeared to be live, but police didn’t know for sure, according to Sgt. Mike Eastham, and the RCMP was waiting for the military to come deal with it. Eastham said it wasn’t the first time police had discovered a military shell, which he said were available from Army surplus stores around the city.

Opinionnow Pipeline approval was a miscarriage of justice Dear Editor: Re: Will there be ‘chaos’ over pipeline?, Burnaby Now, April 18. Burnaby Mayor Derek Corrigan is right in stating that opposition to the Kinder Morgan pipeline expansion will escalate if the courts allow the pipeline construction to go ahead. While various parties who support the project proclaim that opponents are flouting the rule of law, the great irony is that the real miscarriage of justice lies within the process that spawned the approval of this project – a decision biased by political horse trading where the approval of the pipeline was linked to Alberta’s involvement with the national climate change plan. As Prime Minister Justin Trudeau stated in an interview with the National Observer: “Yes, they were linked to each other. Alberta right now is led by a premier who has done things that no premier has ever been able to do, and it was always a trade-off.” If such a “trade-off” was always the case, how can the process that led to the approval of the pipeline have any credibility when the outcome was a foregone conclusion? Many concerned participants who were involved in that public process – First Nations, environmentalists, consultants, community and professional groups, Greater Vancouver municipalities such as Burnaby, and various other parties – know the extent to which it was a flawed process fraught with both ethical and legal deficiencies. That is the basic reason there are so many legal challenges to the federal government’s approval

of the Trans Mountain pipeline expansion. One thing is certain, people will keep fighting this good fight on behalf of our current generation, our children and our grandchildren. In defending our magnificently beautiful, invaluable and “supernatural” British Columbia, they will keep standing on the right side of history and join the ranks of those who fought major battles that helped change our world for the better. In more practical terms, a solution does exist that would ensure our provincial laws are respected, and it will be debated in the House of Commons in May. I encourage everyone to exert pressure on their elected officials to make the right choice and vote in favour of Bill C-392. A National Energy Board (NEB) inspection of Trans Mountain’s terminal in Burnaby has found some aspects of the company’s sediment and erosion measures were not properly installed, the NOW has learned. Federal and provincial officials inspected the site this week following reports of a sediment spill into the Silver Creek tributary south

of the tank farm on April 13. Inspectors did not find sediment in the rivers during their inspection – the streamkeeper who reported the spill previously indicated the waters had cleared by the afternoon of April 13 – but they identified noncompliance with some of the sediment and erosion control measures. Those problems were corrected on site by the company. When reached for comment,Trans Mountain con-

firmed the inspection was complete. “All work at Burnaby terminal is completed under applicable environmental requirements and with all approvals in place,”Trans Mountain said in an email statement to the NOW. “Trans Mountain takes its commitment to public and worker safety and environmental protection extremely seriously.” A full report of the NEB’s findings is expected to be released soon.

Development was again the main focus of Mayor Derek Corrigan’s annual State of the City address at a luncheon hosted by the Burnaby Board of Trade on Wednesday. Affordable housing seemed to be top of mind for the mayor in his speech to developers, business owners, educational institutes and community organizations. Corrigan opened his speech by discussing the expected population growth for Burnaby – 125,000 people and 60,000 jobs in the next 25 years – and the high cost of housing in Metro Vancouver, devoting nearly half-an-hour to discussing how the city is addressing the need for low-cost housing. More than 1,500 new purpose-built market rentals

are currently in the rezoning process or under construction, he said, and plans for 1,000 units of non-market housing are in the works. “I think they want to know what the city is doing, and often you find a focus in the local media being primarily housing issues, and often times that isn’t necessarily expressed what the city is doing, so this is a great opportunity to bring some of those things to the attention of the audience” he told the NOW after his speech. Some affordable housing projects include a 14-storey non-market housing project in Metrotown, a non-market housing project on cityowned land on Hastings Street, Derby Manor, Cedar Place and Fair Haven. Corrigan also described how density bonus funds are used to fund community amenities and create an af-

fordable housing fund. Developers give the city money for projects that exceed allowed density, and that money goes toward creating public amenities. “It’s unique to be able to get that much money coming into the community as a result of development. I think some people see the negatives of development very clearly: they look at the disruption, they look at the fact that the community is changing, and they don’t always get the information about some of the benefits that come with it,” he told the NOW after the speech. “This is a chance for me to say, so with this new development, which must happen because of the growth, we’re also gaining some benefits for local communities in terms of things that you might not have had if it was only tax dollars paying for it.”

Two school additions get the go-ahead from board

The Burnaby school district is one step closer to creating 345 new elementary school seats at two schools. The school board approved a 2018/19 capital plan last June that included multimillion-dollar additions to Cameron and Brentwood Park elementary schools. The plan calls for a

$4.18-million addition at Cameron that will add 20 kindergarten seats and 125 other elementary spaces; and a $4.1-million addition at Brentwood Park that will create 200 new seats. The board passed bylaws for the projects at a meeting this month. The ministry has now asked the district to complete the Cameron project

definition report by Sept. 20 and the Brentwood Park report by Oct. 31. “Next steps are to complete the project definition reports for the two projects, finalize with the ministry, then funding approval can be sought,” district secretary-treasurer Russell Horswill told the NOW in an email. – Cornelia Naylor

Electric buses coming in 2019 Burnaby transit users might soon see a new electric bus in action. TransLink is bringing four fast-charging electricbattery buses to Metro Vancouver starting in 2019, as part of a two-and-a-halfyear trial that looks at different ways to reduce carbon emissions while still being efficient.The trial will operate on Route 100, which travels along Marine Drive through Vancouver, Burn-

Forest Grove Elementary students have gained a new skill, thanks to a local artist. During the past six months, the school has worked with mixed-media quilt artist Jennie Johnston to create a queen-sized quilt, BlueWaves. Each student is also contributing to a nature-inspired art quilt honouring the seasons, according to Johnston. The project continues until May 17, with the works on display at Cameron Community Centre, on May 19 from noon to 3 p.m.

The school is holding a raffle for BlueWaves, with students selling tickets, and the winner will be drawn at the Intermediate Fine Arts Evening Performance at Forest Grove Elementary on Thursday, May 24. Raffle tickets are also available at the quilt showings at the centre. The nature-inspired art quilt will be permanently displayed outside the library at the school. The Rotary Club of Burnaby Metrotown and the Burnaby Rotaract Club’s Wine and Food Fest is the premier fundraiser for the organization, and as such it needs to be successful, according to Antonia Beck, chair of the event. “Rotary is made up of community and business leaders that want to do good work and make a difference in the community, and so we do this as volunteers,” she said. “The wine and food festival takes an incredible effort to put on.” The 20 club members all have roles, she said, adding her expertise is as an organizer and delegator.

Fireﬁghter built a career out of helping others Michael Hurley steps away after 30 years of service with the Burnaby Fire Department Brian Pound

Michael Hurley joined the Burnaby Fire Department because their goal was to help people, and that appealed to him. It was a code he would adopt over the next 30 years in an exemplary career that just came to an end with retirement on April 9. Some background music, please ... Hurley came to Vancouver in 1983 at the age of 25 from a small town sandwiched between Belfast and Derby, Ireland. A carpenter by trade, he left to escape the country’s economics and other things going on in his native land at the time. It would turn out to be Ireland’s loss and Burnaby’s gain. Joining the Burnaby Fire Department in 1988, he would rise through the ranks as a rookie firefight-

er (just learning and honing his skills) to the position upon retirement as acting assistant chief. In between, he became known for his contributions on the job, to the union and to charitable causes.

Just leave things a little bit better than you found them …

After a five-year start, Hurley graduated to a driver, then a four-year involvement as a technical rescue team member. He spent six years as a hazardous materials specialist, the last few as an instructor, and became a lieutenant for four years before heading into retirement as a captain. His proudest moment

through all that as a firefighter came following 9/11. He called the NewYork Fire Department to see how the Burnaby members could help and what they needed. NewYork responded by saying they needed people to come to NewYork for funerals to pay respect to their fallen members. Hurley went immediately to work, put the call out to his fellow members, and within three days, 180 Burnaby members had lined up to travel to NewYork.They went down in four different groups over a three-week period. Hurley’s union activities have been award-winning. He became a Burnaby 323 union committee member in 1994, the union’s vice-president in 1996, and served from 2001 to 2009 as president. During that time, in 2008, he also became president of the B.C. Professional Firefighters’

Association, a term that lasted until 2016. If that wasn’t enough, in 2016 he was elected sixth district vice-president for the International Association of Firefighters, which covers B.C., Alberta, Saskatchewan, Northwest Territory and the

Yukon. He is one of 16 executive board members in North America whose association represents 305,000 professional firefighters. The Burnaby Firefighters’ 323 Charitable Society is one of the most progressive in the province, and Hurley

– who has served as both its vice-president and its president – has played a major role in its development.The society supports more than 40 charities on an annual basis and has raised hundreds of thousands dollars Continued on page 32

You don’t have to be a magician for a kid in your life to think you are. Just dig up a potato and watch their eyes widen in wonder. Witnessing a familiar vegetable reveal itself from under the soil is one of the earliest memories many of us have in the garden, because it makes such an impression.When we grow up we forget this magic.The experience of buying potatoes at the grocery store soon conditions us to think of them as nothing more than a cheap staple for the dinner table, harvested in paper bags.We forget the thrill of digging our own. Adulthood can be too practical that way. That’s why it is important to try a new twist on your favourite vegetables. Not only does growing your own root crops yield fresher, healthier and more environmentally responsible produce, there is more va-

riety available at your local garden retailer than in any grocer. Here is what and how to grow to put the root vegetable and tuber magic back into your soil, and onto your plate: A FAMILY FAVOURITE, POTATOES During the 1840s, roughly two-fifths of Ireland’s population was solely reliant on potatoes as a primary source of nutrients.When a potato blight swept across Europe wiping out crops, the resulting starvation, disease and emigration became known as “The Great Famine” or often, “The Irish Potato Famine.” As Cullens, we count ourselves among the many Canadians of Irish descent who ended up in Canada in the 1840s as a result of the Irish Potato Famine. We love potatoes. As with all things in the garden, growing potatoes starts with the proper soil preparation.They need about 50 centimetres (a-foot-and-a-half) of

well-drained, loose soil that is rich in nutrients. Amend clay soil with compost and sharp builder’s sand. Add compost to very sandy, nonfertile soils. Start potatoes from seedtubers, or “seed potatoes,” purchased from a garden centre or hardware store. Seed potatoes differ from the potatoes in your fridge

as they are bred for growing, not eating.They are virus indexed and specially grown and stored to prepare them for planting in your garden. CHITTING If you leave potatoes in a warm room for a few weeks, they begin to “chit.”The knobby bits that grow from

a potato produce creamy white sprouts that grow a centimetre or two – these are chits.This time of year, most potatoes purchased from a retailer have begun to chit. Cut the pieces so each has one or two sprouts per piece for large potatoes or slice the potato with more sprouts per piece for a higher quantity of smaller

potatoes. Plant potatoes as early as two weeks before the last frost date. Place the segments in a furrow about 25 to 30 cm deep. Choose the spacing based on the size of potatoes you are looking to harvest at the end of the season.To produce larger potatoes, plant 25 to 35 cm apart; for smaller potatoes space 15 to 20 cm apart. They will begin to sprout through the surface of the soil within two weeks of planting in warm weather. As they are growing, hill up soil around the stem to keep the soil from drying out quickly. This is an excellent time of year to grow all root crops. Consider sowing carrots, beets, onions and parsnips from seed. Planting potatoes with kids is a great idea: they grow quickly and have attractive flowers by early summer, and harvesting is a treasure hunt. Pure magic. In the telling of your life story, you can be a victim or the hero. A key to your happiness is the locus of control. If we see life as hostile, unpredictable and beyond our control, we become anxious, demoralized and hopeless. To prevent this spiral down with the stresses of life, we must recognize what we must accept and what we have the power to change. Accept what you cannot change, but accept responsibility to change what you can. Become an agent of positive change. Though you, your world and everyone around you is in constant change, you can be dynamically responsive to change and seek out the positive potential of every moment. Our brains are naturally resistant to change.We quickly fall into habits of behaviour (e.g. eating and physical activity)

and habits of thought (e.g. conceptualizing and ruminating).To be efficient, frequently repeated thoughts and behaviours become entrenched with reinforced neural pathways. As Canadian neuropsychologist Donald Hebb said, “Neurons that fire together, wire together.” The good news: the science of neuroplasticity also tells us that our brains can change for the better; we can literally rewire our neural pathways and create new habits of thought and behaviour.This is how we adapt to our changing world. But it requires effort and practice to reinforce new more positive habits and ways of thinking.You can retell your life story in a more empowering way: see beyond the illusion of a separate smaller self, embrace more fully the present moment and create a more positive future. Mindfulness has become in my practice an essential tool for emotional well-being and health. One aspect

of mindfulness is meditation – focusing attention on physical sensations, the breath or sound.We learn to be present and with deepening awareness recognize that all things change and nothing lasts. Even our thoughts and emotions are changing, transient states. We recognize that much of the suffering in life comes from our reaction to these phenomena.The second dart or second arrow is made up of clinging, rejection or negative ruminations. Mindfulness teaches us particular attitudes with which we meet life’s challenges and changes: with acceptance, without judgment, with compassion.We become less reactive – and more responsive – to life. Relatively recently, neuroscientists have recognized the human brain’s Default Mode Network (DMN or Default Network). It is a network of brain structures – the posterior cingulate gyrus (PCG), medial prefrontal cortex (MPC) and angular gyrus – that are activated

together when we are not focused on a specific task or attending to our immediate environment.This is when we are daydreaming, reliving the past, contemplating the future and ruminating. own brains. Experienced meditators create a new default mode: being more fully aware of what is being experienced in the present moment. You have the power to change how your brain works and transform your life story. Quick on his feet, Burnaby’s Robert Couzens entered the gym carrying a gym bag and sporting a tan gained from a week’s holiday in Mexico. He had to scramble to get his medal for a scheduled photo shoot. It was nearly a month ago, but Couzens hasn’t forgotten the route to winning the Canadian welterweight (75-kilogram) division title, besting three boxing rivals to exit the square ring with his arm raised. “It’s an eternity.You’re like ‘Just hurry up, let’s hurry up, let’s go,’” Couzens recalled of the moment after the bout while waiting for the judges’ decision. In a final where he got his share of hits in but also took some in return, the anticipation of knowing whether he’d become a Canadian titleholder again seemed to drag on. “I thought I had it, I thought I had the fight, but you never know what will happen in the boxing game.Things can go weird right away. … I had confidence in my fight and my abilities that I did enough at least to win.They lifted my arm and right away it consolidated what I was thinking.” His opponent, Quebec champion Hamza Khabbaz, pulled his arm away from the referee after Couzens’ win was announced, showing his disappointment, to state it mildly, with the decision. McLean to compete for Canada

Shasta’s Declan McLean jetted to Colombia this week to compete for Canada at the 2018 Pacific Rim championships. The junior trampoline athlete, a member of the New Westminster-based Shasta Club, was among 31 people selected, including coaches and judges, to represent Canada at the international competition. A student at Byrne Creek Secondary,

McLean has worn the Maple Leaf before, competing for Canada as a 13-year-old at the 2015 world age group competition in Denmark and the 2016 Indo-Pacific gymnastic championships. At last year’s Canadian trampoline and tumbling championships, McLean finished third in the junior men’s division.
