’Twas the night before Christmas, and …

In the spirit of the holidays, localVIPs and newsroom staffers share stories of their Christmas Eve traditions Three more sleeps. With Christmas Day looming, small children everywhere are excitedly awaiting the arrival of Santa Claus. To get us all into the seasonal spirit, we decided it was a good time to check in with some local movers and shakers (and our own newsroom staff) to find out what folks do on Christmas Eve. Here are their stories: STEPHEN D’SOUZA, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, BURNABY COMMUNITY SERVICES On Christmas Eve my wife, daughter, the family dog and I gather with our extended family for dinner.We usually enjoy a roast with gravy, bowls and bowls of vegetables, salads, sweet potatoes and pilaf. Dessert of homemade cookies from the grandparents is followed by cards and board games. At the end of the night, we walk the dogs and explore the Christmas light displays around the neighStephen D’Souza bourBurnaby Community hood. Services When we return, I try to convince everyone to join me for some Christmas carols, but my inability to stay on rhythm or hold a tune usually limits us to two songs. We then pull out the hidea-bed, inflate air mattresses and get ready for a hurried night’s sleep. Just before we lay down our heads for dreams of reindeers on the roof, we hang up our stockings around the fireplace and open one small present each to help build the excitement for the morning. After saying goodnight to children, pets, brothers, sisters and parents, my wife and I usually lay on an overfilled air mattress whispering about the crazy year gone by and how thankful we are to once again be with our loving family. Site C makes for odd allies

Difficult to imagine them getting caught dead in the same room a few weeks ago, but to paraphrase William Shakespeare, “Site C acquaints a man with strange bedfellows.” The list of supporters includes the Canadian Taxpayers Federation, B.C. Building Trades, Christian Labour Association and the Progressive Contractors Association. They all seem to think they’ve won something too, which is going to be fun to watch when the honeymoon is over. When former Premier Gordon Campbell announced plans to move ahead with Site C in 2010, he justified the $6.6-billion cost by focusing on demand: “The decision to pursue Site C comes at a time when B.C. Hydro forecasts that B.C.’s electricity needs will grow by 20 to 40 per cent over the next 20 years.” There’s a long ways to go to hit even the low end of Campbell’s forecast. B.C. consumed 62,467 gigawatt-hours of electricity in 2010. Last year, it had jumped to 62,951 gigawatthours, an increase of 0.8 per cent. But that’s only seven years. How about two decades? B.C. was home to 3.9 million residents in 1996, there were 1.5 million households across the province, GDP had hit $139.9 billion and we consumed 64,664 gigawatt-hours of electricity. By 2016, B.C.’s population was 4.75 million, there were 468,000 more house-

holds, GDP had risen to $240.8 billion and we consumed 1,713 less gigawatthours. In 15 of the last 20 years, we’ve used less electricity than we did in 1996. Then there’s the matter of settling the bill. Following the B.C. government’s 2014 announcement, Kieron Stopforth – a lead hydro analyst at Bloomberg New Energy Finance – observed that “the cost range for most largescale hydropower plants around the world is between $1 million and $6 million per megawatt.That compares with more than $7 million for Site C.” And that was when the cost was $8.8 billion. How much faith can we have in the new $10.7-billion estimate? In a 2016 study, University of Oxford’s Said Business School professor Bent Flyvbjerg and Harvard Law professor Cass Sunstein examined 2,062 global infrastructure projects and found the cost-benefit ratio was “typically overestimated by 50 to 200 per cent” and that the information behind the ratio analysis was “so misleading as to be worse than worthless, because decision makers might think they are being informed when in fact they are misinformed.” But Horgan has a plan. Buried in a backgrounder to the government’s announcement news that “EY Canada has been retained by B.C. Hydro to provide dedicated budget oversight, timeline evaluation and risk assessment analysis for the duration of the project.” Continued on page 7

Cold snap hits Burnaby birds A cold snap in January proved deadly for the Lower Mainland’s red-bellied sapsucker population, according to the Wildlife Rescue Association, which took in many of the birds.The robin-sized avians were falling out of trees, unable to sustain energy to perch. Some were so weakened they were blown along the roadside, too weak to resist the wind.The cold presented a double-whammy to the sapsuckers – increasing their food needs, while at the same time freezing solid the tree bark where they dig for sap and bugs. Many of the birds taken to the association had lost a quarter of their 60-gram body weight.

Site C will be a cost burden for generations Continued from page 6 A little over a year ago EY Canada – better known as Ernst &Young – gave Site C a clean bill of health stating the project was “on time and on budget.” There was a catch. Ernst &Young came to its conclusion relying solely “on information provided by (Hydro).We have not audited, reviewed or otherwise attempted to verify the accuracy or completeness of such information.” In the very week that B.C. was committing to push ahead with Site C, Alberta auctioned off 595 megawatts of renewable en-

ergy capacity. The “weighted average bid for wind energy was 3.7 cents a kilowatt-hour or $37 per megawatt-hour.” Site C will provide roughly 4.6 million megawatt-hours of power annually. Harry Swain – former chair of the Site C joint review panel – estimated the cost at $95/MWHour in 2016, when it still had an $8.8-billion price tag. Site C will come home to roost. Pity the premier it falls on. Will higher energy costs lead to greater conservation, thereby, negating any rate increases? Will it deter new businesses from opening up shop in B.C.? British Columbians likely fall into one of three groups when it comes to Site C: those adamantly opposed, those fiercely in support and the rest biting their lips in fear. One thing most will likely agree on, however, is that this can’t happen again. No government should leave another government in such circumstances, and on that point Horgan was largely silent. Last December, the B.C. NDP had a Facebook post, it read: “Site C will be yet another cost burden for British Columbians, their children and grandchildren.” After last week’s revised forecast, probably a safe bet to tack on great-grandchildren as well. Citynow Burnaby woman stars in a movie-worthy Christmas surprise Winning a Cineplex contest gave Nicole Deguise and her family a memorable holiday reunion Tereza Verenca

Imagine not being home for the holidays five years in a row and then surprising your family at a movie theatre. That’s exactly what Nicole Deguise (née Rochefort) did. The 34-year-old Burnaby resident, who moved to theWest Coast with her husband a decade ago, had only made the cross-country trip to Ontario once or twice. Flying around Christmas was always too expensive, she told the NOW. But earlier this year, Deguise’s sister Lori entered a contest with Cineplex.The company was looking for a bilingual family that had lots of home videos.

To Deguise’s surprise, her family won. She was to fly to Toronto on Dec. 2 for a reunion of epic proportions. “I didn’t believe it at first. You see all these wonderful stories happen to other families and you never think it’ll happen to yours, and it did; and I was excited and nervous at the same time,” she said. When they arrived at the theatre, the Rocheforts were under the impression they had won a special movie screening. But when the lights dimmed, Cineplex staff began rolling a nearly two-minute “trailer” of the family’s home videos. Seconds later, Deguise appeared. “I was in tears,” she said of the big reveal. Deguise was greeted by

her parents, four siblings and even her 18-month-old nephew she had never met. Her mom’s reaction “was the best.” Her jaw dropped and she immediately began to cry, Deguise said. “I expected nothing less from my mom.We chat all the time, every week on the phone, but it’s hard for her for me not to be home. The fact I was able to surprise her. ... It was just incredible,” she said. “Thank you (Cineplex).This has been the most incredible Christmas gift that anyone could have given us. It was the most amazing, unique experience I’ve ever gone through and my family’s ever gone through.” According to Ellis Jacob, president and CEO of Cineplex, movies have the power

Escher-esque rendering of Santa. “I drew three ornaments with a reflection of Santa putting presents under the tree,” Low said. For its greeting cards, the school district picked art by Stoney Creek Community School students Cedar Fawcett, who drew a snowman, and Valentina Matica, who drew a festive penguin. Fawcett and Matica were acknowledged at a public school board meeting Monday (Dec. 11), while Butter, Low and Sahu were recognized by Corrigan at a city council meeting on Nov. 27. “It was kind of fun, kind of not fun,” Butter said of the meeting.

The City of Burnaby and the Burnaby school district have sent out some snazzy Christmas cards this year thanks to a group of young local artists. The city chose festive drawings by Buckingham Elementary students Arneet Butter and Cynthia Low and Marlborough Elementary student Kashvi Sahu to put on the front of its holiday greeting cards. Butter’s drawing of a gingerbread house, which will be featured on cards sent out by Mayor Derek Corrigan, was inspired by her six-year-old sister. “My sister really likes gingerbread houses so I drew a gingerbread house for her,” she told the NOW. “There’s a gingerbread house and a ginger-

PARLEZ-VOUS FRANÇAIS? Allison Klassen, Colette Cazes, James Bayliss, Cynthia Wong, Eryk Seppanen, Jennifer Apeldaile and Dana Larsen reached the end of a 12-year experiment in June 1989. The small group were the Burnaby school district’s first early French immersion grads and all that was left of the original Grade 1 class of 22 students that started at Aubrey Elementary, moved to Moscrop Junior High and finally ended up at Burnaby Central. After 12 years of classes together, the group thought of each other as brothers and sisters but were also relieved it was over, according to Apeldaile. She said the district treated the group like guinea pigs, subjecting them to “hundreds” of tests over the years to evaluate the program.

‘They’ve got their minds on other things’ Reporter spends an afternoon with a Salvation Army bell ringer outside London Drugs at Brentwood mall Evan Hagedorn

As a bell ringer for the Salvation Army Kettle Drive there are only two rules to follow: the kettle must never be left unattended, and, of course, you must always keep a smile on your face. For some, the Salvation Army Christmas Kettle Drive is a key part of the holiday season, when the ringing of those sleigh bells can make anyone realize the holidays are near. The Salvation Army is much more than its Kettle Drive. For Beverly Blanchard, the organization is the reason she is living a comfortable life after her husband passed away in 2007. “If it wasn’t for Salvation Army, I would’ve been homeless,” said Blanchard, who lived in the Salvation Army-run Grace Mansion after her husband’s death. Now in her 60s, Blanchard, is giving back to the same organization that saved her, by working as a bell ringer. When I joined Blanchard last Tuesday, it was noon, and her fourth shift was just beginning. Dressed in a festive sweater fit for the holidays, Blanchard stood outside the London Drugs in Brentwood Town Centre to

shake the bells. Though you might think mallgoers would be generously ripping their wallets open to donate to help run services for the less fortunate in their community, you might think wrong, as this time of day may have not been the best, according to Blanchard. “They’re just too busy, they’ve got their minds on

other things,” Blanchard said about the amount of donations that were coming in, adding that some passersby just don’t have the money to donate. Another possibility is that most shoppers don’t seem to carry money with them. One donor even came up to us saying, “I’m a debit girl”

after she donated a loonie. Bells constantly ringing, Blanchard and I talked about her move from Edmonton to Vancouver in the late ’70s, though our chat was constantly being interrupted by the “hellos” to mallgoers from Blanchard. Most just walked past without a hello, but this didn’t seem to bother her. “People think I say hello to get them to donate, but I’m just trying to be nice,” Blanchard said. “If they’re going by, I might as well say hello.” As the shift progressed, I asked Blanchard if I could use the bells for bit. Her response? “No, it’s fine.” (Possibly they were too precious to her or I couldn’t be trusted, though I eventually found a second pair to use.) The bells did eventually leave both of our possession as a children’s choir began to set up across from us. Just as they began to play, the conductor ran over to borrow our sleigh bells for their performance of Walking in aWinterWonderland. After their performance, they were returned. Let’s just hope not letting the bells leave our possession was a third rule we weren’t told to follow.

A longstanding tradition The Kettle Drive dates back to San Francisco in 1891, when Joseph McFee, a young captain, set a kettle on the docks to collect money for the less fortunate under the slogan “keep the pot boiling.” He raised enough money to host a homeless dinner. Now, in 2017, the organization has grown and still holds the kettle drives during the Christmas season while offering services like meals and shelters in 124 countries and helping people in need.

We live in an age of disbelief. In a season traditionally of reverence and celebration, in recent years some may have found under their Christmas trees, Richard Dawkins’ book, The God Delusion and Christopher Hitchens’ God is Not Great (subtitled How Religion Poisons Everything). At age seven, my wideeyed daughter had been troubled by doubt. It started after visiting Santa at the mall. Because she hadn’t decided what she wanted for Christmas, Santa told her, “When you’ve made up your mind, tell your mom and dad.” After that, she began entertaining conspiracy theories and doubting her own parents. “It’s you, isn’t it?” she’d challenge me. “You’re Santa, right?” I explained to her that the Santa in the mall was just one of Santa’s look-alike helpers and that Santa’s lo-

cal representatives are human and may misrepresent him. I have to confess my first thought had been to sue Santa. Why would he say such a thing? Was he intentionally downloading his job onto parents? Are we supposed to email letters to Santa ourselves or line up at the mall again just to tell him what our kids want? I didn’t return to the mall. Even with the photo, I’d never be able to identify the right Santa.They all look the same to me. Santa’s not the problem. Like other icons of belief, it’s the abuse of his image by individuals and organizations that confuses and misleads the world. A child’s belief in Santa parallels cognitive, emotional and spiritual development.To young children who understand the world in black and white terms, Santa’s an old man in a white beard who lives far away at the top of the world, watching and judging everything they do.This version of Santa for the simple

of heart and mind is a bit petty; he only gives presents to good little boys and girls. In the old days, noncompliant kids would get a lump of coal, which we now know to be carcinogenic. Authority figures such as parents and teachers sometimes leverage this simplistic understanding in order to get kids to behave. Eventually, most children realize that life doesn’t follow such simple rules. Some keep getting presents no matter how naughty they’ve been while many nice kids get no presents. Like parents, commercial institutions seize the Santa image for their own purposes – in this case, to make a profit. By so doing, they poison everything and contaminate a child’s simple faith. Many lose faith when they don’t get what they’ve hoped and prayed for. Commercialism has blurred the distinction between our wants and needs.We are conditioned to crave for the latest games, toys and fashions. In the big view of real

life, we ultimately receive what we need, though it may not have been what we wanted or expected. As children mature, they scrutinize adult behaviour. The advice to “do as I say and not as I do” convinces no one. Many a child has lost their belief in the Tooth Fairy because of a parent’s disbelief. Again and again, fathers are caught with their hands under their children’s pillows because they themselves could not believe she would come.

As I grew up, I realized that my conception of Santa was too limiting. Although it’s comforting to imagine his traditional image, I knew he must be more than he appeared to be.That chubby old man would have died from diabetes or a heart attack centuries ago. My faith is not dependent on a fantasized image of the North Pole. If I were to venture to the far north and find no elves, reindeer or Fortress of Solitude, my world view would not be

shattered. I see Father Christmas all around me, here and now. My faith is renewed when I engage in the endless exchange of kindnesses and when I witness gifts given from the heart – with special thought, in appreciation of others, and with unbridled and unconditional affection. Christmas present is not a material thing but it is material to our daily lives. It is the gift of the moment – what we have now and the relationships before us. It is the potential of the past realized. It is tomorrow’s memories in the making. It is the recognition of the divine in our present lives – in others and in ourselves. It is the acceptance of what is – naughty and nice, faith in the good within us, and love unconditional. In an age of disbelief, I am a believer. Communitynow Classic shortbread tops the Christmas polls Home baking takes top spot in a hard-fought Ultimate Battle of the Christmas Treats It was a hard-fought battle – but, in the end, the outcome was clear. Classic shortbread earned readers’ votes to take top spot in our online Ultimate Battle of the Christmas Treats. We started online polling two weeks ago, asking readers to choose their favourite treats in four categories: Best Home Baking, Best Store-Bought Sweets, Best Savoury Snacks and Best of the Rest (for any others or oddball snacks that just didn’t fit anywhere else). We then advanced the top two winners of each category to a final round of voting, which wrapped up this

week. Shortbread ran away with it in the end, capturing 39 per cent of readers’ votes for first place. Home baking also took second place, as butter tarts emerged with 21 per cent of the vote. Purdy’s Hedgehogs made a valiant run but finished just shy of the home-baking entries, with 19 per cent of the votes. At the other end of the spectrum, savoury snacks didn’t fare well at all.The bottom three vote getters were mixed nuts, corn chips and salsa, and potato chips and dip. Among the other contenders, the controversial licorice allsorts (which had tied for the lead in the “Best of the Rest” category to advance to the finals) wound up in fifth place, with 7.5 per cent of the vote – just behind Ferrero Rocher, at eight per cent.
