The special service is held in recognition of the feast day of St. Francis on Oct. 4. St. Francis was known for his love of animals and his belief that all creatures were creations of God. Burnaby churches are among those who mark his feast day with the pet blessing tradition.

MIGRATING BIRDS INJURED

‘This is not normal’ – wildlife expert says

The Wildlife Rescue Association of B.C. saw an “extreme” number of migratory birds smashing into windows last month.

Staff saw about 300 wounded birds, including song sparrows, red-breasted sap suckers and some woodpeckers, according to hospital manager Janelle Stephenson.

“This is not normal,” she told the NOW. “Usually, we get a lower number of birds in September.This year, during migration, we found an influx from an average of five animals a day to up to 40 a day.”

Stephenson suspects the higher-than-usual numbers may have to do with the forest fires that burned in B.C.’s Interior this past summer. She said more birds made their way to the Lower Mainland as a result.

“Also, there’s a lot of urbanization in the Lower Mainland. Urbanization is huge, population (increases), habitat encroachment,” she added.

Most of the birds were found outside living room windows or alongside tall buildings, Stephenson noted.

All God’s creatures CELEBRATING A SAINT:

About 20 people turned out to a pet blessing at All Saints Anglican Church in Burnaby on Oct. 7. The service was led by Rev. Justin Cheng, who invited parishioners to bring in their furry friends. The church has been performing the blessing for a few years now. It honours St. Francis of Assisi, who was known as the patron saint of animals and routinely performed blessing ceremonies. All Saints Anglican Church saw a host of cute cats and dogs come through its doors, including a tabby and a dachshund. There were even a couple of bunnies on hand. Churches around the world participated in the annual tradition, which is usually celebrated on or around Oct. 4, St. Francis’ feast day.

The city is home to the most pampered cats in Canada, according to Amazon Canada.

The accolade is part of Amazon Canada’s annual list of the top cities in Canada with the most pampered pets. Overall, Burnaby ranked fifth behind London, Ont., Calgary and Edmonton, Alta.Vancouver came

in first with the most pampered pets in the country, according to a press release from Amazon.

“Not only did Burnaby make its return to the top 20 this year after falling out last year, but residents ranked the highest in purchases for cat products.

From beds to grooming to litter, they were all about the cattitude this year,” noted the release.

The rankings are compiled by comparing the number of items purchased for pets – on a per capita scale – from August 2016 to August 2017 on amazon.ca.

Only cities with more than 100,000 residents were included, and sales data was collected from products for dogs, cats, birds, fish, reptiles and small animals.

Folks who were granted a detailed route hearing for the Trans Mountain expansion project should be notified by Kinder Morgan by next week.

After reading the Oct. 6 issue of the NOW, David Huntley learned, to his surprise, he was one of the successful applicants chosen by the National Energy Board to participate in the pipeline hearings.

To qualify for a hearing, statements needed to show a direct link between the route and the applicant’s

lands and how those lands could be “adversely affected” by the pipeline expansion.

The NEB received 452 statements of opposition to the proposed route, with 135 related to the Burnaby segment. Of those 135, 28 were granted a detailed route hearing “The National Energy Board has done it again. It has made a decision on an application that I made for a hearing about the pipeline route but has not bothered to tell me,” Huntley wrote in an email.

“Readers may recall the same thing happened before

when hundreds of people applied to be interveners or commenters at the original NEB hearing on the Kinder Morgan pipeline application.

“There were many people months later who did not know whether or not their application had been accepted because the NEB had not told them. Once again, the NEB is not acting as the public servant that it should be.”

NEB spokesperson James Stevenson said it’s Kinder Morgan’s job, not the national energy regulator’s, to notify successful applicants.

God or no God, we’re failing on this one

We suspect there may be some skepticism generated by our page 3 photo spread on the blessing of animals at a Burnaby church.

Does God really part the clouds, look down on a wee brick structure on Royal Oak Avenue in this particular city on earth and hear a kind minister’s words about the four-legged companions his parishioners brought to him for blessing?

But perhaps that isn’t even the point of it all. Per-

haps it’s but an excuse to take a moment to notice how we share this planet with some of the most interesting, and, yes, even companionable animals.

Whether we thank God for creating them, or merely thank them for being, at least we’re grateful for them.

In either case, we think it’s at the very least a sweet service and, at the most, a noble one.

The Bible says: “God made the beasts of the earth

after their kind, and the cattle after their kind, and everything that creeps on the ground after its kind; and God saw that it was good.

Then God said, ‘Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; and let them rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over the cattle and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.’”

Some have taken it to

mean that human beings “rule” over Earth’s creatures as some sort of Godgiven right to use animals as we want to. Others have taken it to mean that we are responsible for maintaining and protecting “every creeping thing.”

If God’s expectations for us were to be good caretakers of other living things, we’re failing.There are fewer species on Earth every year. Our impact on the environment is not good, to

say the least. And then there are the “human beings” who hunt animals just for the thrill of it.We’re pretty sure God didn’t intend a wealthy hunter in khakis to be killing rhinos for the fun of it.

As science uncovers more and more about the creatures we share this planet with, we are finding out that they are complex creatures. Many with intelligent, meaningful behaviour that contradicts the oft-re-

peated phrase “dumb animals.”These are creatures that communicate with each other, create songs for each other, adopt the young of other animals, act as therapists for humans, and do so much more.

Whether you believe in God or not, you can’t help but look with wonder at the creatures we share this planet with, feel concern for their future – and, better yet, want to do your part to help them.

Money games continue in B.C. The B.C. government’s proposed public subsidies for political parties may be hogging the media spotlight, but there are some other important aspects to the government’s proposed changes on how political parties and elections are financed.

The legislation proposes a cut of 25 per cent to the province’s campaign spending limits.

For a political party running a full-slate of 87 candidates, the overall limit would drop from roughly $11.6 million to $8.7 million. It’s a start, but at an estimated $2.75 per voter, it would still be twice that of the federal limit and higher than Quebec ($1.37), Ontario ($2.08) and Alberta ($2.43).

Given the incredible generosity behind the government’s proposed transitional allowance to support political parties as they wean themselves off big money, perhaps a bigger cut to the spending limit would be in order.

Setting a personal contribution limit, as the bill does, is a bit of a mug’s game.

The best result is likely one where no party is happy with the limit, but they’ll all live with it.

In an opinion piece in The Globe and Mail, former Attorney General Geoff Plant wrote: “(Bill 3’s) problems start with its most basic feature, the $1,200 annual contribution limit.

“For a well-off married couple with adult children who happen to share their parents’ political views, there’s an opportunity to donate thousands of dollars a year, easily affordable for

the well-to-do, but entirely out of reach for most citizens.”

Tackling one of the tougher areas of campaign finance reform, the government may have found the right balance between Canada’s Charter of Rights and political accountability when it comes to third-party spending in the lead-up to B.C. election campaigns.

In the last election, John Winter – former CEO of the B.C. Chamber of Commerce – was the public face to Future Prosperity B.C., a pop-up third party that went dark in the days leading to the dropping of the writ, thereby conveniently circumventing current rules which require any third party that advertises during an election campaign to disclose its campaign spending and all its donors in the six months preceding the election.

The government has rightly steered away from setting a spending limit for third parties outside of a campaign period and instead opted for applying the same contribution limits and criteria as those for political parties, while legislating a 60-day pre-campaign period where third parties will be required to disclose donors and spending to Elections B.C. Something not touched on in the legislation, but contained in the former government’s bill, is the issue of donor disclosure.

Electoral change needed Dear Editor: Keith Baldrey is worried that first past the post will not win the electoral reform referendum to be held next year. He’s probably right to worry. According to a recent poll, two-thirds of British Columbians agree that we should adopt proportional representation.

That’s because the current system has clearly shown itself to be sub-par over and over again.

Most people would agree that the number of seats each party wins should match the voter support for that party. A party that gets 20 per cent of the vote should win 20 per cent of the seats. If they do not, then those 20 per cent of voters are not fairly represented.

Our current system doesn’t work like that.

The difference between the level of voter support and the number of seats that a party wins can be quite substantial. For instance, we regularly get majority governments that are based on 40 per cent of the vote, so this kind of distortion has big consequences.

Maybe that’s the reason most people think we should adopt a new system. That’s certainly the reason that first past the post should lose the referendum. It’s not because the government is “stacking the deck,” as Mr. Baldrey charges. It’s because voters recognize that the current voting system fails to get results that reflect our votes.

On the other hand, I guess defenders of the current system must like the fact that they can win a majority with only 40 per cent.

We need real disclosure

And with a ban on corporate and union donations, disclosure will have to go further than it has in the past to capture a donor’s employer to help ensure that “straw men” are not used as a means to get around the ban.

Geoff Plant is dead on when he writes: “The outrage over the fundraising practices of the former governing party is a big reason they are no longer in government.”

It’s a lesson all parties should heed.

“Often, the secondary injury is that a cat will pick them up after they hit the window because they’re easy prey.”

The influx of birds has “definitely” put a strain on staffing levels at the Burnaby-based animal hospital. Usually, the centre runs with two staff members and between six and eight volunteers. Now, that number is around 16 to 30 volunteers.

“Sometimes we don’t have all the volunteers because they need a lot

of training and everything, so sometimes we’ll be lower, but we make it work.”

Stephenson encourages residents to take preventive measures if they see birds smashing into their windows.There are window decals and stickers out there that are clear to the human eye but not to a bird’s eye.

Moving bushes, trees and feeders away from windows also helps.

A temporary solution is putting up construction paper or coloured masking tape.

Artsnow Robot sculptures in new Deer Lake exhibit Art lovers, save the date: Deer Lake Art Gallery is presenting a new show, Worlds of Wonder, from Nov. 4 to 25.

The show includes metal sculpture and digital art, featuring the work of Nancie Green and Lynne Taylor Fahnestalk.

Fahnestalk is a professional illustrator and cartoonist whose cartooning background paved the way for her robot obsession.

Now she makes robot sculptures from upcycled metal objects – held together only by nuts, bolts, screws and washers, with no welding or gluing involved.

Green is an artist who uses photography and computer manipulation of photos to create robots and otherworldly imagery.

An opening reception is on Thursday, Nov. 2 at 7 p.m., and there will be an artist demo and talk on Saturday, Nov. 4 at 1 and 2 p.m. Deer Lake Gallery is at 6584 Deer Lake Ave.

A brother-sister duo from Burnaby is part of the Canadian contingent for the upcoming world dance championships in Germany.

Anthony Juo, 8, and his 12-year-old sister Eugenie, who study with Dance Collective, are heading off with Team Canada West to the International Dance Organization’s world show dance championships in Reisa, Germany from Nov. 20 to 25.

They’re among 50 of the best young dancers from Western Canada to join the team, which is led by head choreographer Danielle Gardner – a past finalist on SoYou ThinkYou Can Dance and a former world champion dancer herself.

The team dancers range in age from seven to 19, and they’re spending 11 weeks training as a group for the chance to represent the country.

Bonnie Dyer,Team Canada Dance national director, says Canada has been quite successful in all disciplines at the world championships, thanks to the high standard of training that local studios offer.

“It is also great to see the best of the best in Canada that come from various studios all working together with one goal, and that is to represent Canada,” she said

Celebrity sightings in Burnaby in 1987 were likely skewed a bit by the arrival of Halifax native Matthew Johnson in April. The 21-year-old was the spitting image of Burnaby-born-andraised superstar Michael J. Fox just as Fox was at the height of his Family Ties and Back to the Future popularity.

Johnson’s sister had been the first to point out his uncanny resemblance to the teen idol a couple years before Johnson moved to Burnaby for work.

Turris top Grandview Steeler of all-time Ottawa Senators centre and former Burnaby Express star Kyle Turris has been named the Grandview Steelers all-time top player.

Turris played for the Pacific Junior B Hockey League team as a 15-yearold in 2004-05, scoring 13 goals and assisting on 16 others in 31 games.The next year he helped the Express of the B.C. Junior Hockey League win a national junior A championship and then followed it up by being taken third overall pick by the Phoenix Coyotes in the 2007 National Hockey League entry draft.

With the Senators travelling to Vancouver to play the Canucks Tuesday night, Turris was able to attend the Steelers game Sunday evening at the Burnaby Winter Club, where the team announced its top 10 all-time players. Against the Canucks,Turris had an assist and scored to extend the shootout as the Senators won 3-2.

Turris talked to the Steelers prior to Sunday’s game in which they defeated the Mission City Outlaws 6-1.

Braeden Gurney scored two goals while Burnaby’s Mateo Coltellaro and Michael Martino had a goal and an assist each as did Jordan Myers. Ian Prevost of Burnaby also scored for Grandview while Nico Bruno of Burnaby had three assists.

At the North Surrey Rec Centre last week, the Steelers downed the Surrey Knights 6-2 with Coltellaro scoring twice. Bruno and Anthony Benevoli, another Burnaby boy, had a goal and an assist apiece while Ethan Reilly of Burnaby and Prevost had singles. Burnaby’s Cale Dolan made 19 saves for the win.

After jumping out to a 3-0 lead in the first period on Wednesday (Oct. 11), the Steelers rode Dolan’s goalkeeping to a 3-2 victory in Aldergrove over the Kodiaks. Dolan made 35 saves, while Benevoli, Prevost and Connor Alderson scored for Grandview, extending the Steelers win streak to six games.

The Steelers will take a 7-4-0-1 record into Sunday’s game (7:15 p.m.) at BWC against the Port Moody Panthers (3-5-0-1).

Burnaby’s Holowko headed home Burnaby puck product Nic Holowko is returning home to pursue his education at Simon Fraser University following three-plus years in the Western Hockey League, according to Gregg Drinnan of the Taking Note blog.

Drinnan reported the 20-year-old Holowko, rather than playing as an overage junior, left the Kamloops Blazers on Sunday.The former Burnaby Winter Club left winger had three goals and an assist in seven games this season.

He spent his first two seasons in the WHL with the Seattle Thunderbirds before splitting 201617 between the Prince Albert Raiders and the Blazers.

In 208 regular-season games, Holowko had 21 goals and 32 assists.The six-foot, 190-pounder had two goals and four assists in 30 playoff games. All of those points came in the 2016 post-season playing for Seattle.

SFU PUCK HOME OPENER After playing six games – including in exotic places like Anchorage and Fairbanks, Alaska, Castlegar, B.C., and Cheney,Washington – the Simon Fraser University men’s hockey squad will finally get to play its home opener in the cozy confines of Bill Copeland Arena on Saturday.

WHITMORE WINS TWO Paul Whitmore of the host Burnaby Lake Rowing Club won two events at the seventh annual Small Boat Invitational Regatta on Saturday.

Whitmore won the men’s single sculls and teamed with BLRC teammate Greyson Classen to capture the double sculls. Herein Paterson and Elisa Luo of BLRC won the women’s double sculls.

The club’s Kieanna Stephens, who recently finished third in the women’s double sculls at the junior world rowing championships, had the fastest time in the women’s single scull four-ki-

lometre time trial, which required competitors to do a 180-degree turn at the halfway point.

The competition included rowers from Seattle, UBC and Washington State University.

KAFADAR NO. 1 Burnaby’s Josipa Kafadar is currently ranked number 1 in the world in the youth women’s under-52 kilogram division in the latest world taekwondo rankings.

The 16-year-old’s most recent victory came at the Pan American championship in San Jose, Costa Rica.

PANTHERS ON THE PROVINCIAL PROWL Burnaby’s Moscrop Panthers have vaulted up the provincial AAAA senior girls volleyball rankings to sixth spot after a second-place finish at the University of B.C.-Okanagan tournament Thanksgiving weekend.

In the round-robin, the previously-unranked Panthers finished first in their division with wins over Vernon, College Heights of Prince George and Kelowna, who were ranked fifth prior to the 40-team tourney but dropped to 10th.

In the playoff rounds, Moscrop defeated Kelowna Christian, Prince George Secondary and Caledonia (Terrace).

North Vancouver’s Handsworth Royals downed Moscrop in straight sets in the championship final. Moscrop middle blocker Fiona Chen and left side hitter Camilla DeVito were named as tournament all-stars.

The Panthers will play in the Burnaby South Invitational this weekend.

Matt Brown of Burnaby will be Canada’s offensive coordinator at the 2018 Federation of International Lacrosse men’s world championship in Netanya, Israel July 12 to 21.

The team will be coached by Randy Mearns of St. Catharines, Ont., who was named as head coach of the men’s team at St. Bonaventure University in Allegheny, NewYork in June.Taylor Wray of Edmonton will be the defensive coordinator. Brown was Wray’s offensive coordinator when Canada came second at the 2016 under-19 men’s world championship held in Coquitlam.They also teamed up at the 2012 U19 event.

Brown is an associate head coach with the University of Denver Pioneers, which won the NCAA Division 1 championship in 2015. He won three Minto Cups playing for his hometown Burnaby Jr. Lakers box lacrosse teams. After playing for the Pioneers he went on to spend five seasons with Major Lacrosse League’s Denver Outlaws, including leading the league in scoring in 2006. !
