Land transfer alarms city council Council concerned province is distancing itself from social housing program by selling properties

City council is worried about the future of social housing in B.C. now that the province is selling property off to non-profits.

The B.C. Housing non-profit asset transfer program launched last fall.

Coun. Colleen Jordan, who heads the city’s planning and development committee, asked staff to compile a report on the program after being approached by a resident who lives in social housing.

“I said, ‘Gosh, I’m really worried about

the implications,’” she told the NOW. “Staff have real concerns with it.”

The program allows non-profit housing organizations to buy the properties that they currently lease from the Provincial Rental Housing Corporation at fair market value, according to the a press release from the ministry responsible for housing.

But Jordan worries the province is selling off its assets and distancing itself from providing social housing.

“These are assets for the future that will no longer be available,” she said.

Up to 115 properties are being transferred this year, with the province’s en-

tire stock of 350 properties possibly being transferred within the next three years, according the staff report.

The province will assist non-profit societies in obtaining mortgages for the land.

Many of the societies already have mortgages for the buildings, the report stated.

City-owned lots up for sale Two city-owned lots are up for sale, two years after tenants were evicted from one of the properties in Metrotown.

The tenants were given their notice when the city decided to build the Chaffey -Halley pedestrian path on the two lots, located at 5596 Halley and 5587 Chaffey avenues.

The two duplex lots are open for bids until 9 a.m. on June 16.

The Halley Avenue lot is approximately 7,910 square feet. The minimum bid price is $1.10 million, according to the bid packages posted on the city website.

The Chaffey Avenue lot, which includes the house, is 8,250 square feet. The

minimum bid price is $1.17 million. The home will be open for viewing on June 9 from 1 to 3 p.m., with no other viewings available, according to the post.

The transaction completion date is July 28.

Earlier this spring, the NOW sent a freedom of information request to the city regarding its plans to put the two properties up for public tender. The request was denied based on Section 17 of the freedom of information and protection of privacy act, as the disclosure would be “harmful to the financial or economic interests of a public body.”

Councillors expressed concerns about cashstrapped societies taking on another mortgage in addition to maintenance costs for the properties.

Council agreed to send letters to the premier, deputy premier and housing minister regarding these concerns. The staff report is being sent to city MLAs, Metro Vancouver and the Union of B.C. Municipalities.

B.C. Housing has indicated the push for the transfer program came from the societies running the housing programs, particularly through the B.C. Non -profit Housing Association.

“The non-profit housing sector has been asking for the ownership of these lands

to be transferred to them for many years,” Shayne Ramsay, CEO of B.C. Housing, said in a statement emailed to the NOW. “The province has listened and is fully committed to further supporting non-profit housing providers through these transfers.”

The net proceeds from the sales will be reinvested in social housing, according to Ramsay.

“We are focusing on innovative ways to create affordable housing such as enhancing rental assistance programs, increasing supports for individuals in transition from healthcare or other institutions, renovating social housing in need of major repairs as well as seeking partnerships for building new units for people with the greatest need,” he stated.

Three Royal Oak Avenue lots – including one owned by the city – are currently up for rezoning.

The rezoning application from SVM Developments LLP is going to public hearing on May 26, according to a city staff report.

The application is for a three-storey townhouse development with 23 two-bedroom units and underground parking, the report stated.

The city-owned lot at 7029 Royal Oak Ave. is currently vacant, according to the report, and the appli-

cation includes a request for approval of the property sale.

The lot at 7009 Royal Oak Ave. is also vacant, and the third lot, at 6989 Royal Oak Ave., has an older, single-family home on it.

Two years ago, the applicant put forward an application for an eight-lot consolidation on Royal Oak Avenue which included these three properties, but that plan fell through, the report stated.

The public hearing is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Tuesday, May 26 in council chambers at city hall at 4949 Canada Way.

Burnaby woman takes charge of her life after a devastating accident

There are two things Burnaby resident Amy Chan learned the hard way since a life-changing snowboarding accident almost 20 years ago: the importance of protecting her head and the importance of not staying stuck in the past.

Chan was in her final semester of a communications degree at SFU and busy with three jobs in 1996, when she went up to Whistler for a snowboarding trip and returned a changed woman.

She remembers nothing of that trip, but she knows she wasn’t wearing a helmet before she crashed.

“No one wore helmets back then,” Chan told the NOW. The brain injury left the former high school basketball player with mobility challenges – she now uses a walker – as well as emotional and cognitive problems.

“After I talk to you, I’ll forget you called,” she said.

“That’s why I have to write it down.”

But Chan has come a long way since her injury.

She teaches English to seniors part time at the Burnaby Multicultural Centre, paints, makes pottery and speaks to others with acquired brain injuries about her story.

Her proudest moment since the accident came last June when – almost 20 years after her studies were cut short – SFU awarded her a Liberal Arts certificate.

“I don’t care what it

was,” Chan said. “I finally got to walk across the stage.

I use a walker, but I practised really hard with my cane, so I could strut myself across the stage.”

A more private, but no less crucial, achievement has been the headway Chan has made against depression, something she said has plagued her since leaving the G.F. Strong Rehabilitation Centre in 1997.

“I just didn’t see my life going anywhere,” she said of an emotional low she

reached a few years ago.

Chan said she used to be insecure about short-term memory problems that make her forget things she has said and people she has met.

Today, she tells people about her injury and its side effects right away. She might even take their photo with her iPad to remember them for later.

“I was so insecure about it before,” she said. “I didn’t want anyone to feel sorry for me, but now that’s all changed.”

With help from a behaviour analyst, Chan has worked hard to identify negative thought patterns and stop living in the past.

“Shit happens in life,” she said. “It’s what you do with it after. You can’t always just focus on the negative, which I did for way too long. OK, I suffered an injury. That’s in the past.

Now I’m going to move forward and see what I can do with my life right now.”

Burnaby’s Brian Bonney is still facing Election Act charges, but that’s not stopping the Canadian Taxpayers Federation from hiring the well-known Liberal organizer.

Bonney has been working on contract with the federation since 2013.

“I have nothing but positive things to say about working with him,” said Troy Lanigan, federation president and CEO. According to Lanigan, Bonney is a fundraiser who solicits donations and visits contributors, explaining the federation’s work and campaigns.

Bonney’s ongoing court case stems from allegations that he and Mark Robertson, a Liberal Party staffer, made an illegal political contribution during the 2012

Port-Moody-Coquitlam provincial byelection. The two are now facing multiple counts of violating the Election Act, specifically the section relating to election financing.

“I think it’s embarrassing for him. I mean I’m sorry he’s having to go through that, and I’m sure he’d like to see a resolution to it soon,” Lanigan told the NOW. “In terms of the specific point involving Brian, it’s an issue of whether someone was paid or whether someone was a volunteer. I just think the amount of time and resources being put into investigating this question seems absurd to me. I don’t understand.”

The NOW called Bonney but did not hear back by deadline.

Council OKs statue A memorial to the founding father of the Republic of China will soon be situated in Central Park.

Council approved plans to continue the design and construction of the Sun YatSen memorial, which will be located near Patterson SkyTrain station.

Last June, the city approved plans to spend $40,000 in gaming funds on the design, with the Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Foundation for Peace and Education providing $20,000 in-kind for supplies and installing the statue and the concrete and granite podium, as well

as another $20,000 to complete the project.

The memorial will include a 7.5-foot statue of Yat-Sen on a 5.5-foot base, and granite tablets with inscriptions detailing the contributions of Yat-Sen, according to a staff report.

Eight magnolias will be planted around the memorial, in a gesture meant to coincide with the time of year that Yat-Sen visited Burnaby in 1911, the report added.

The memorial is set to be completed at the end of the summer, the report stated.

Lotto winner’s lawsuit nonsensical If you win $50 million, many people think, your troubles are over. Apparently not.

The mysterious Lotto Max winner who waited nearly a year to present the supposed winning ticket is now suing the B.C. Lottery Corp. for the right to remain anonymous – even though each lottery ticket sold in B.C. contains a reminder on the back that winners must consent to

having their photo taken and name published.

Many of us have spent time fantasizing about how we’d handle such a win, whether it’s $50 million or a relatively small sum like $5 million or $10 million.

Hiring a marching band to troop through your office, announcing you’ve hit the big time and won’t be coming back, is a common fantasy.

Another involves catch-

ing the first flight out of the country for somewhere, anywhere really, you’ve never been.

But launching a lawsuit?

Really?

If you don’t want to abide by a contract, don’t sign it.

Essentially, that’s what you’re doing when you buy a lottery ticket; you’re agreeing to the resulting publicity that will come if you hit the jackpot.

Yes, some lotteries in other countries and a few U.S. states don’t publish the names of winners, which would certainly cut down on calls from former Grade 1 classmates and third cousins asking for cash, but a lottery run by the government needs to be transparent. Players need to know the prizes are really being awarded, not just trust in some government agency that says

they are.

Besides, those corny photos of beaming winners lined up behind giant fake cheques are the best publicity any lottery can buy, so it’s definitely not in the interests of the BCLC to stop taking them.

We can see the case for some winners remaining anonymous – undercover police officers, prison guards and women hiding from abusive partners

– and those are the kinds of exemptions most lotteries make.

But in all other cases it just doesn’t make sense.

If the winner has security concerns, he or she should just hire a team of bodyguards – and stop wasting money on a court challenge we’ll all end up paying for.

Or here’s another idea: let someone else claim the prize.

Committed to development This is a response from the Burnaby Board of Education to a letter to the editor from Ralph McDiarmid (April 6).

We certainly agree with his statement, “The best a high school can do is to provide a variety of education in all its forms.” However, the letter doesn’t represent an understanding of the ongoing developments in public education, the redesigning of learning spaces and the retooling and upgrading of facilities in our schools.

These ongoing changes are implemented to meet the present day demands of both the provincial and local economies.

All of Burnaby’s high schools offer a variety of introductory trades courses for students in grades 8 and 9, taught by experienced technology education teachers.

Students in Grade 10 wishing to explore trades have an option to take the Transition to Trades program.

The district is also a “Designated Training Provider” of ACE-IT programs, a credential bestowed by the government’s Industry Training Authority after a review of the facilities and credentials of the journeypersons delivering the program. In grades 11 or 12, students may choose to take specialized post-secondary Level 1 Technical Training through ACE-IT. In addition to earning Dogwood Graduation credits they also receive the same credits as post-secondary students at BCIT or VCC,

saving them both time and money.

Beyond ACE-IT, which is specific to the traditional trades, the district continues to respond to the needs and challenges of a changing tomorrow, and offers specialized training options in multiple forms, including digital sound production, media arts, film and broadcasting, computer networking, tourism management and fitness leadership. Two new leading-edge programs, health sciences and robotics and automation will be offered in the fall of 2015.

ACE-IT and industry training students all complete work experience practicums. Successful completion of these programs most often result in smooth transitions to post-secondary studies and/ or work in industry.

As we design and customize programs to meet the needs of our community, there are ongoing conversations between the Ministry of Education, the Industry Training Authority, the business community, and our educational partners.

The board is proud of our commitment to career education and the role we play in supporting student transitions to career success.

Metrotown rumble averted

Police arrived at a Metrotown-area parkade in July just in time to prevent what could have been a bloody rumble, as nearly 25 youths had gathered to fight – some armed with machetes. Const. Phil Reid said units were dispatched to a parking facility on McKay Avenue after security officers reported trouble. When police reached the parkade, most of the youths fled; however, one suspect, armed with a knife, was chased down by police and taken into custody.

Minimize probability of incidents now

Still not happy about ‘secret’ surplus

Dear Editor One day, a serious ocean bitumen spill will ‘happen.’ Why? Because someone was not attending to duty, was not adequately trained, was showing off, is a member of a fanatical religious or political group, is over/under medicated, has booze/ narcotics problems, is distraught/angry, is overstressed, etc., etc.

The only known solution is to minimize the probability and consequences of a bitumen spill is to keep large tankers out of our busy, environmentally sensitive waters… namely, Douglas Channel, Burrard Inlet, Salish Sea. Doable – today!

Recent headlines will confirm that our most sophisticated transportation devices will fail us. Planes, trains, ships, pipelines, etc., so what to do? Ensure that corporations are structured to continually be made aware of public safety issues. Include, on the board, a Corporate Technical Officer (CTO) who is responsible to counsel the board with latest internationally acceptable facilities and practices, and for the board to be accountable to review, decide and approve action. Still there would be no guarantees – but board decisions that include such due diligence would minimize public incidents and likely, corporate liability?

At the outset, applicants for oil transport infrastructure projects must demonstrate their competence and show an organizational structure that includes world class leaders and embodies a corporate-wide culture of safety.

As for that ‘world class bitumen handling device’ promised by Mr. Harper, many doubt we’ll ever see such a contraption.

Save or move the trees, don’t cut them Dear Editor What a shame, watching decade-old, manicured trees being smashed down by the hoes and taken away in the demo truck at the old Mountain Shadow Pub property, this week.

In an age motivated by sustainability and care for future generations, why couldn’t these have not been moved to the west side of Barnet Marine Park where families seek shade trees for summer barbecues and watching the boats go by.

Shade trees are few and far between at the west side of our beautiful park.

I would hope the City of Burnaby would in the future consider these types of options when approval is given for old properties to revert into the dreaded cement capsule townhomes.

Pump price a rip off Dear Editor Does anyone besides me feel ripped off by the oil companies?

At the current price of $60 (US), the price of crude oil is down by 45 per cent from its high of $110 (US).

The current price of gasoline at the pump is about $1.33 (CDN) which is down just 10% from the high of $1.48.

Don’t let tar sands past Alberta border earlrichards The best strategy for the stopping toxic, tar sands spills is not to let the tar sands pass the AB/BC border, because there is no world-class equipment to clean-up a spill. The tar sands will sink to the bottom and the Western Canadian Marine Response Corporation only cleans surface spills.

WCMRC has no equipment to clean the tar sands from the bottom of the Harbour or the Salish Sea. WCMRC is 50% owned by Kinder Morgan and the other 50% is shared between Esso, Shell, Chevron and Suncor.

“We’re here to help the sharks, to help stop the distribution and sale of shark fins because in 10 years, the large sharks are going to become extinct,” Heather told council at Monday night’s meeting.

The students showed councillors two videos, including a graphic depiction of shark finning practices.

“I could see on my classmates faces that they, too, were shocked,” Heather said about Sharkwater.

“We were so astonished that this was happening, but it actually is still happening in other places.

And it’s just really sad.”

But Heather said she was also inspired by the concern of her fellow students.

Maya, on the other hand, said she noticed a lot of apathy when the film was shown in her class, and that made her want to act.

It is an issue that’s been on the front burner for cities

“I was actually really interested,” she said. “It made me sad that no one really cared about this.”

The students came to the meeting to ask council to support a provincial ban on the sale and distribution of shark fins.

Mayor Derek Corrigan thanked the students for their presentation and mentioned that the Union of B.C. Municipalities passed a resolution in 2012 asking the provincial and federal governments to

ban the import and sale of shark fin products.

“So it is an issue that’s been on the front burner for cities,” he said. “And it continues to be an important issue to lobby on to make sure we are a leader worldwide in ensuring that this barbaric practice ends.”

Mayor and councillors thanked the students for their bravery in speaking to council and commended them for their activism.

The shark fin issue was a major one in Burnaby a few years ago, when activists asked council to create a shark fin ban bylaw, preventing the sale of shark fin products in the city.

However, council voted against instituting a bylaw in 2013, saying it would be too difficult to enforce on the municipal level. Activists such as Anthony Marr of the Vancouver Animal Defense League disagreed with the decision.

Oil spill response ‘a bloody disgrace’ Janaya Fuller-Evans

Burnaby council expressed dismay and anger over the response to last month’s oil spill in Vancouver at a recent council meeting.

Things probably would’ve gone much the same if the spill happened in Burnaby waters instead, according to a city staff report presented at the meeting.

On April 8, the MV Marathassa leaked oil into English Bay. The following week, Burnaby council asked staff to compile a report on the incident – in particular the length of time it took to respond – and what is in place for potential spills in Burnaby.

The lead agency for a spill in Burnaby would be the Canadian Coast Guard, as it was in Vancouver, the staff report stated, with the city part of the “unified command.”

Coun. Paul McDonell expressed concerns about future incidences that may occur under less ideal conditions than the spill in Vancouver.

“If this is the type of thing you get when you have a perfect day,” he said, “this is a disgrace.”

McDonell was particularly critical about the length of time it took to respond to the spill, and the company in charge, which claimed its response was “phenomenal.”

“If this is their idea of world class, we’d better build a bloody big dam (around Westridge Marine Terminal),” he said. “This was a bloody disgrace.”

Port Metro Vancouver’s operations centre was informed of a possible spill at 5 p.m. on April 8, according to the report.

At 8 p.m., the Coast Guard called in Western Canada Marine Response Corporation. The clean-up crew arrived at 9:25 p.m., skimmed the water to locate and confirm the source of the leak, and placed a boom around the vessel at about 4 a.m. on April 9.

The City of Vancouver was notified about the spill at about 5 a.m. that morning.

Coun. Sav Dhaliwal spoke about the planned twinning of the Kinder Morgan pipeline and increased tanker traffic in Burrard Inlet.

“This is clearly a warning for all of us,” he said of the spill.

The staff report focused

on potential spills at the Burnaby terminal site.

The lead agency responsible for any potential spills at the terminal would depend on whether or not the spill was contained on land or migrated or occurred in the water, the report clarified.

Legal responsibility for spills at the terminal would be dependent on whether the vessel or terminal caused the spill, the report added.

The staff report also provided information on the company that handles oil spills on B.C.’s West Coast, Western Canada Marine Response Corporation, a private company formed from an oil spill response cooperative. The current five shareholders include Transmountain Pipeline. The response company’s South Coast office is located at the former Shell Refinery site in Burnaby.

Transport Canada reported that an estimated 2,700 litres (about 17 barrels) of oil leaked into English Bay on April 8, and the response company said it recovered roughly fourfifths of that within 24 hours.

The April 18 picnic at Kinder Morgan’s tank farm terminal went off without a hitch. Roughly 20 people came out with tablecloths, picnic baskets and musical instruments. They sang, they ate and they took a lot of photos, since the event was held in defiance of Kinder Morgan’s policy to call police on people taking photos by the oil storage facility.

“The guards didn’t even try and hassle us,” said organizer Mary Sherlock.

“We sang them some songs and offered them food, but they didn’t partake. All very mellow – just as I wanted.”

People walking on the nearby trail stopped to join the group, and drivers honked in support. Sherlock organized the event after hearing how Tim Takaro, SFU professor, received a call from RCMP after he was taking photos by the tank farm. So far, the picnickers have not received any calls from police.

raising campaign to support his efforts to send money to Nepal. White, who runs a Mount Everest trekking company, has a large network of Sherpa and Nepalese people in the country, which was hit by a devastating quake that’s killed more than 7,000 people. Spacekraft landing in city this summer City’s first networking hub opening in Metrotown Janaya Fuller-Evans

Look, up in the sky – it’s a bird, it’s a plane… no, it’s Burnaby’s tallest tower. A tower so tall, Spacekraft will land there this summer.

The coworking space is scheduled to open in the Sovereign highrise in Metrotown by mid-July, according to Spacekraft owner Darryl Bosa.

Bosa started out in the family real estate construction and development business, Bosa Properties, which built the Sovereign highrise.

Coworking spaces are locations where entrepreneurs, freelancers and others who typically work from home can rent desk space, offices and board rooms to conduct their business.

Bosa plans to differentiate Spacekraft by creating a sense of community and support for its members, he said.

“We truly want to be more than just a desk for our members,” he told the NOW. “We want to create a genuine community.”

Bosa intends to do so by offering a slew of services not typically available in coworking offices, such as enterprise development opportunities, leadership courses, insurance, accounting services, and discounts with local businesses, such as a healthy food delivery service, he said.

“Services that are attainable in a large company – we want to bring these to our small businesses,” Bosa said.

“Coworking spaces right now often rely on that serendipitous moment,” Bosa said, explaining members typically connect to others by sitting at a desk near them at the right time.

Prior to launching Spacekraft, Bosa worked in hotel construction in Beijing.

He is particularly interested in Generation Z, and the possibilities inherent in the younger generation’s interactions with real estate, Bosa said.

He plans to use his real estate knowledge to create an ideal community workspace, he added.

“We’re trying to keep the probability of success as high as possible,” he said.

The coworking move-

ment took off in the mid2000s, he said, particularly with people who typically work from home.

“When you’re working at home, you may be working all day without talking to anyone,” he said, “It brings on loneliness.”

Spacekraft’s general manager, also known as Space Commander, is Geoffrey Scoates.

Scoates studied finance in university and was an entrepreneur himself, starting a painting company as a student. He also worked to help other small businesses and found it rewarding, Scoates said.

“You see amazing things happen,” he added.

He worked out of the HiVE coworking space in Gastown, and also worked for it during his two and a half years there.

Coworking spaces open up opportunities for small businesses, he said.

“It provides them with opportunities they didn’t know existed,” Scoates said.

“There’s a network of people to support you.”

Having worked at another coworking space, as well as using it himself, he sees clear benefits for members, as opposed to simply working from home, he said.

“That’s why I’m super excited to do this in Burnaby,” Scoates added.

cleaning up the area along Still Creek, on Thursday, May 14.

MOUNTAIN SHADOW PUB HAS FALLEN SILENT The Mountain Shadow Pub is no more.

The pub was torn down at the end of April, according to Chris Ciavarelli.

Ciavarelli started a petition to save the unique pub, which opened in 1980, but plans for a condo develop-

ment were approved last year.

The pub was a favourite for many SFU students and local athletes, but was tucked into a residential neighbourhood, which resulted in a number of noise complaints.

The pub closed at the beginning of April.

Burnaby Neighbourhood House volunteers dropped in on council on Monday, in honour of Neighbourhood House Week.

Simone Brandi and Ernie Kashima of Burnaby Neighbourhood House spoke at Monday night’s meeting.

Brandi appealed to council for further support, as the North Burnaby Neighbourhood House property has been sold and is being demolished this fall. The organization is looking for another location in the area.

There are two neighbourhood houses in Burnaby, as well as nine daycare centres and community hall run by the organization, according to the city’s proclamation for Neighbourhood House Week.

Council also proclaimed May Child Care Month and May 21 Child Care Provider Appreciation Day. At the last council meeting, council declared May MS Awareness Month, and Elizabeth Fry Week and Emergency Preparedness Week from May 3 to 9.

WHAT A WASTE REPORT The City of Burnaby is continuing with a number of its plans to divert waste from landfills, including expanding glass collection in grey bins to multi-family housing complexes.

A staff report on the city’s solid waste and recycling program listed goals for 2015 that included multi-family glass collection, bringing the Burnaby public schools food scrap program to all schools, and creating a commercial materials recycling area, separate from

ENVIRONMENT WEEK Burnaby is celebrating Environment Week from May 30 to June 6, according to a staff report.

Plans include the environmental awards program.

There is also a Burnaby youth video conference, which was organized by the Burnaby Youth Sustainability Network. Video prize winners are announced on May 30.

The festival on May 30 is being held at the same time as the city’s farmers’ market and will include information displays, exhibits and live music, as well as small prize giveaways, the report stated.

Environment Week also includes the annual citywide garage sale day, also scheduled for May 30.

The basic Z has everything a driver needs, and few distractions

Ever feel like you’re being bombarded with choices? No? Then just walk down the snack food aisle in any major supermarket – or go shopping for a sportscar.

Anyone who gripes about the golden days of performance, or who wishes manufacturers paid more attention to the enthusiast market simply isn’t paying attention. We are up to our eyeballs in smart little sportsters, and for the Nissan Z, that’s a really big problem.

When the 240Z came out, it didn’t really have much direct competition. Sure there were Mustangs and Camaros to contend with, but the Z was more of a corner carver. It was a reliable E-type Jaguar for the everyman.

The modern Z, on the other hand, is quite an expensive car, and thus it’s hard to make a case for it as a value-priced sportscar. And the market these days, as mentioned, is crammed with everything from V6 Hyundai Coupes to Ecoboost Mustangs.

But what’s this? A 370Z for less than $30K? Cloth seats, 300hp, rear-wheel-drive and a stick shift?

Maybe it’s time to pop this box off the shelf and give the Z a second look.

Design:

As a car that’s been on the market for several years, the 370Z has aged well. Actually, according to multiple passers-by, it’s aged extremely well. At least once a day, the Z received a compliment, a gaze, a hoot of admiration.

You can see why. While not as pretty as the original – and few cars are – the 370Z manages to be all hunched, muscular fury, yet still retain a nonthreatening face. It’s a bit fishy-looking and very Japanese, but it looks great with those big 18” alloys filling the wheelwells, and LED running lights.

It’s also fairly compact, something that’s not really apparent until you park it next to an old Acura Integra or similar. This is a proper-scale sportscar, not oversized at all.

Rearward visibility is flat-out terrible, especially in the threequarter panels. However, everything else about driving the Z in city traffic is relatively painless. The suspension is very taut, but with the slight extra sidewall protection provided by the 18”s (instead of 19”s), ride comfort is liveable. The V6 is built to rev, but has enough grunt for you to be lazy with the gear changes.

Environment:

This being a base model, the Z doesn’t exactly impress on the inside. If anything, it reminds me of a Scion FR-S. But then again, those two cars are fairly close in price now.

With that in mind, the basic Z has everything a driver needs, and few distractions.

Some features are a bit goofy, like the extra dials on the dashboard that display less-than-relevant information like battery voltage, but the seats are grippy and comfortable and the entire instrument cluster moves with the steering wheel.

Rear trunk space is surprisingly good, thanks to the opening hatch. The old 350Z was pretty cramped, limited by a huge strut-tower bar that blocked golf clubs and the like. This 370Z’s a lot more liveable, and while I wouldn’t recommend one to a NHL goalie for equipment hauling duties, it would work as an everyday car.

Performance:

The 370Z is old enough to remember when the badge on the back of a car actually had something to do with engine displacement. Under the nose is a 3.7L V6 that makes 332hp at 7000rpm and 270lb-ft of torque at 5200rpm.

That’s a healthy amount of scoot, and it becomes doubly impressive when you consider the price point is within $500 of a basic Mazda MX-5. Suddenly leather seats and satellite navigation just look like fat to be trimmed, for this kind of money, the Z is all lean meat.

The accelerator travel is quite long, so you do have to really want to stir up the 370Z to get it into attack mode, but here too is a revelation. There’s no sport-button, just a switch if you want to turn traction control off. The sportiness of the Z is entirely up to the driver – so here we go.

This is a great little oft-overlooked car, fierce to drive as it is to look at. Despite the short wheelbase, it doesn’t snap into oversteer, but will very gently let you know it’s rear wheel drive when you blast down an onramp. The V6 really wakes up towards the end of the rev range, so there’s joy to be found in thoroughly stirring up the six-speed transmission and making the ‘6 howl.

Cornering isn’t artificial either – fire the Z through a couple of backroad bends and its low seating position and driver-centred pivot point give a greater sensation of speed. The steering is great, analog feel in an age of numb electric power-assist.

In short, the 370Z has aged, yes, but everything that’s old about it is the good stuff. We can live without updated infotainment when the raw entertainment is this good.

Features:

Equipped with Bluetooth hands-free as standard and USB connectivity, the Z has the basics covered. You might not actually need anything else.

Fuel economy is pretty average for a V6-powered coupe. Official ratings are pegged at 13.3L/100kms city and 9.2L/100kms on the highway. Mixed-use driving netted around 10-11L/100kms, depending on how hard one dipped into the throttle.

Green Light:

Styling ages well; raw, focused performance; excellent performance value

Boire took over as interim CEO last October and was officially named CEO at the end of January.

“I think the most important thing for a department store is to be special,” he said regarding the retail industry. “Really it’s about re-establishing Sears as the place people come for value. We have great products here. We need to tell the story louder and prouder about what we’re really good at.”

Sears may see more business now that Target Canada has shut down, but Boire said it’s unfortunate that Target employees lost their jobs.

“It’s always sad to see that happen to so many good people who are working there,” he said. “We certainly have an opportunity in some of the categories where they did a good business.”

The company is looking at investing in its website and expanding its shopping options,

Despite selling its Metrotown property to Concord Pacific, Sears Canada has no immediate plans to close the store, according to CEO Ron Boire.

“We have a long-term lease here. Concord has plans to redevelop the area, so we’ll see how those plans come together in the coming years,” he told the NOW. “We’re still excited about being here and about serving this market.”

Sears is in the midst of selling three of its properties to the Concord Pacific Group of Properties, with the sale going through in June, and then plans to lease the properties back.

Boire came to town recently to celebrate the company’s strong roots in Metrotown, he said.

“We’ve been here since 1954,” he said. “We were here before there was a ‘here’ here.”

“We consider ourselves very healthy rivals in the Canadian marketplace,” he said. “Other stores that focus on price and discount are at a different place in the spectrum, but I think for us, Canadians are looking for a great

“For middle-income Canadians, I think that Sears is still the place for them. For the quality you get it is the best value, for sure,” he added.

As for what the future holds for both the Metrotown and Brentwood stores, Sears is taking a waitand-see approach with regards

to the planned property developments, Power said.

The most important thing is to continue to create loyal relationships with customers, according to Art Evans, general manager of Sears at Metrotown.

“So many of our customers are customers that we’ve been serving for decades,” he added.

The setting couldn’t have been better for Farida Bano Ali to find out about winning a 2015 B.C. Community Achievement Award this spring.

The longtime Muslim community leader, who has spent years advocating for cultural awareness, multifaith dialogue, domestic violence prevention, refugees and new immigrants, was in Mecca when she got the email.

“I was in the holy land,” Ali told the NOW. “I said, ‘Oh, I’m so blessed. It’s so wonderful.’”

Born in Fiji, Ali retired 12 years ago after a 40-year nursing career that started in England and included time at New Westminster’s Woodlands School and the Forensic Psychiatric Hospital at Colony Farm in

Coquitlam. She moved to Canada 40 years ago and for nearly two decades has volunteered on numerous of boards, committees and initiatives.

She is a director of the Multifaith Action Society, chair of the Women’s Council of the B.C. Muslim Association, chair on the Muslim advisory committee for the Ministry of Children and Family Development, a member of the RCMP’s cultural diversity advisory committee and a member of the steering committee with Mosaic for issues related to preventing violence and abuse of women and girls in the name of honour killings.

She has also spearheaded fundraising dinners that have collected $40,000 for the new mental health centre at Vancouver General Hospital. In 2006, she and her husband started a monthly hot meals for the homeless program that is

still going strong at their mosque today.

“I say to myself: I’m on call from Monday to Sunday,” Ali said. “If anybody has social problems, like domestic violence or depression or a child abuse case, children apprehended, if

A recent example included a refugee from Iraq and her two-year-old son who arrived at Vancouver airport a few weeks ago.

The woman took refuge in the YVR chapel and needed psychiatric help.

The University of British Columbia Thunderbirds defeated host Concordia Cavaliers 5-2 in the deciding game of the NAIA West region baseball final on Monday in Portland, Oregon.

Throwing for the third time in four days, reliever Curtis Taylor held Concordia scoreless for the final four innings to earn the win, his second of the tournament.

“I’m proud of this team. Our most talented?

No, but they carried on our championship expectations and mentality that has been built up over the years. A real gutsy team effort today,” said University of British Columbia head coach Terry McKaig.

The Cavaliers trailed by three runs in the top of the eighth inning but loaded the bases with no outs.

Taylor struck out the next batter on four pitches and then got the next up to ground into a double play.

Penn State University gymnast Briannah Tsang was named the women’s team newcomer of the year at the Nittany Lions’ endof-season banquet held on April 25.

The freshman from Burnaby competed in the allaround in each of the team’s 12 meets this season, penning her name into the program’s record book on three occasions, while also claiming a school record with four Big Ten freshman of the week honours this season.

Tsang shared Big Ten freshman of the year honours, garnering 11 individual event wins and four all-around titles, including school record scores of 9.950 on the vault and balance beam.

Penn State finished in the top 25 for the 13th consecutive season in NCAA Division I, placing 22nd overall.

In the post season, Penn State posted its highest score in program history at the Big Ten championships, garnering 196.725 points in Ann Arbor, Michigan in March to erase an 11-yearold record.

The Burnaby Girls Intensity fulfilled a season of struggles with the soccer club’s first Coastal Cup title in years.

The Intensity, playing with just two substitutions, won the under-16 girls’ B Coastal Cup final 3-0 over the Chilliwack Attack at the Aldergrove Athletic Centre last Saturday.

Sarah Eng scored Burnaby’s first two goals, including her first-half eventual game winner. Danielle Labreche got the Inten-

sity’s final goal late in the game from a near impossible angle, chipping the ball over the Chilliwack keeper to the far post. Tea Cecic recorded the shutout for the Burnaby girls.

“The whole season was a struggle with injuries and numbers,” Burnaby Girls head coach Zac Patel said of the team’s small 15-player team. “The girls just gave their hearts out.”

With two Intensity players playing at less than 100 per cent, Patek said the outcome was an all-team effort.

“Oh yeah, they were a very happy bunch. They’ve come a long way,” Patek

said.

The Intensity finished second in the regular season to the Langley Dynamite this season. They also lost earlier in the season to the league winners in the LIGA Cup finals in a shootout.

Burnaby knocked off Coquitlam Metro-Ford TNT 3-1 in the semifinals and the Central City Bullets 4-1 in the quarter-finals. The Intensity opened the round of 16 playdowns with a 2-1 win over the Royal City Rebels.

The Intensity will take part in the Provincial B Cup finals in Penticton this summer from July 9 to 12.

The FISU standard for the women’s 800m is 2:05.

“Lindsay went out with a purpose and was determined to get the FISU standard,” said Clan head coach Britt Townsend in a SFU press release. “After 400 metres I knew she was on track because she was running faster than she ever had.”

Cusati was the hero of the day with a career-high three hits for UBC in a 5-3 win over Menlo in the opening round last Friday.

Cusati tripled home teammate Bryan Arthur with the game-winning run in the bottom of the eighth. Cusati scored later on a fielder’s choice.

“A freshman year in our program is not easy,” said McKaig, in a UBC press release. “You overcome a lot of adversity, so to see them deliver for us, it puts a smile on your face as a coach. (Cusati) was all fired up, you could tell with the slide and he was really emotional.”

Cusati batted .250 this season, registering 14 hits and 12 RBI in 24 starts.

Another Burnaby ballplayer, outfielder Griff Goyer, averaged .233 at the plate with 14 hits, including a pair of home runs this season.

The NAIA World Series will take place from May 22 to 29 in Lewiston, Idaho.
