Local Mounties recently arrested two suspects allegedly wreaking havoc across the Lower Mainland and Alberta. At a media conference on Tuesday, Burnaby RCMP announced the man and woman had been arrested following a month-long investigation by the local detachment. The suspects were wanted on more than 120 charges out of Alberta and had managed to evade police for four months. The couple caught the attention of police in the Lower Mainland in March, when a spike in thefts of Ford F series trucks began cropping up. On March 25, Burnaby RCMP’s prolific offender suppression team were assigned to investigate the spike, and two days later a stolen Ford F350 truck allegedly rammed two vehicles in Abbotsford – a police car and a civilian car, according to a media release. The suspect driver in the incident escaped before he was arrested. Meanwhile in Burnaby, another stolen F350 truck was spotted by officers on April 2. Mounties attempted to stop the truck but it sped away and was not pursed for safety reasons, according to police. Nearly two weeks later, Burnaby RCMP spotted a third stolen truck, this time a F250, driving down Royal Oak Avenue. Officers called in assistance from the Air 1 helicopter crew and the suspect vehicle was followed as it left the city and made its way to a residence in the 6200 block of 137 Street in Surrey, stated the release. According to police, the suspect was observed driving dangerously through school cross walks, onto sidewalks and causing other “significant public safety concerns.” “This couple was engaging in high risk Continued on page 8

The Burnaby school board will cut the equivalent of nearly 18 jobs to balance its budget next year. It’s better than the nearly 30 jobs the board had considered cutting during its budgeting process, but that was no source of joy for trustees or school district employee groups at a public meeting Tuesday where the 2015/16 budget was unanimously approved. “This has got to be one of the most difficult budgets I’ve ever done,” board chair Ron Burton told the NOW, “and that includes the Vander Zalm years and all the cuts then.” To maintain current service levels next year with no cuts, the district would have faced a shortfall of more than $2.2 million – even after applying nearly $4.4 million in surpluses expected to accumulate by the end of this year, according to secretary-treasurer Greg Frank. Just under $1.5 million of that gap will be covered by staffing cuts. Totalling 17.8 full-time equivalent (FTE) positions, the cuts are sprinkled throughout the district and every employee group. Elementary teacher-librarians, however, were spared. The board had considered cutting the equivalent of nearly three elementary teacher-librarians, but the final budget includes only a 0.6 FTE reduction in secondary teacher-librarian time and the loss of one high school library assistant. Each high school will still be left with one full-time teacher-librarian, according to Frank’s budget presentation. All high schools will also continue to have lab assistants, despite the loss of one FTE lab assistant position. Cuts at the secondary level, which also include the loss of two clerical Continued on page 4
