Mom is out on a ledge

A mother has given birth on a window ledge at Burnaby Hospital – and it’s not the first time.

Longtime staff say a pigeon currently warming a couple of hatchlings on a fourth-floor ledge off the surgical ward returns every spring to raise its young with a mate who is said to keep watch.

The nesting site, behind large windows off a busy hallway, gives staff, patients and visitors a chance to bear witness to the annual drama.

“It happens every year and it becomes this huge thing because everybody walks by here to visit their family in the Continued on page 8

City teacher wants MLA Lee recalled Jennifer Heighton insists it’s not a partisan action – it’s because Lee isn’t representing his constituents

Burnaby-North MLA Richard Lee was walking by Brentwood mall Wednesday, when he noticed a small group of people handing out pamphlets.

Lee approached them and took a leaflet, and he was surprised to learn the literature was promoting a recall campaign specifically targeting him.

“More than a month ago, I heard there are pamphlets going around my office in the residential area, and I know there’s some action being taken already, but I haven’t met them,” said the Liberal MLA. “By chance yesterday, I ran into some of them volunteering.”

The volunteers were from B.C. Citizens for Recall, a grassroots group pushing for recall campaigns against Lee and Maple Ridge-Mission MLA Marc Dalton, also a

“I respect the process and the mechanism, so the citizens, they have the right to do that,” Lee said.

As the last Liberal politician in an NDPrun town, Lee may seem like an obvious target for the left, but Jennifer Heighton, the main organizer behind the campaign, insists it’s not about party politics.

“To try and say there’s some kind of partisan connection at all, there isn’t,” she told the NOW. “The reason why (Lee) was chosen is he’s not representing people in his riding, and how we know that is we’ve been going door to door talking to citizens.”

elementary teacher in Burnaby. She’s also a representative with the Burnaby Teachers’ Association, the local union branch of the B.C.Teachers’ Federation, a longtime foe of the Liberal government.

Heighton would not name names or reveal the number of people involved in her group, but she told the NOW there was no connection with the local teachers’ association. According to Heighton, B.C. Citizens for Recall members include NDP and Green activists, as well as people with no party affiliations.

I’ve been to a couple of meetings and asked questions and not been happy with the answers. I’ve protested outside of his office many times and not had any concrete results,” she said.

According to Heighton, the main complaints about Lee are that he doesn’t do enough and that he’s invisible.

In order to successfully recall Lee, Heighton has

to drum up enough volunteers, interest and awareness about the campaign, so they can collect enough signatures if Elections B.C. approves the campaign.

Right now, she’s still in the initial grassroots organizing stages and doesn’t know when she will apply to Elections B.C. for approval.

If Lee were recalled, there would be a byelection, and there’s nothing stopping him from running again.

Lee has been MLA in

Burnaby North for 14 years. He was working as a programmer analyst at TRIUMF, UBC’s particle and nuclear physics lab, before he was voted in during the Liberal landslide of 2001. Lee’s held onto his seat by several hundred votes, but in 2005 it was as close as 65.

Still, all the recall talk doesn’t seem to faze him.

“We have the support in the last election,” he said. “We just had an election and another election is two years away, so it will

take away energy and time for me, of course. I try my best to address all the constituents’ concerns.”

Lee also said his office is always open for constituents to come by and express their concerns.

“The issues, of course, I cannot solve everything.

I’m sure some of the policies in the Liberal government, they don’t like it, but overall people support our government,” he said.

High bar to reach when shooting for recall How does recall work?

B.C. is the only province where people can petition to remove an MLA between elections.

Recall rules are covered by the Recall and Initiative Act, which came into effect in 1995. Since then, Elections B.C. has approved 24 recall pe-

titions, but only five made it to the signature stage. Four failed due to lack of valid signatures, and in the fifth campaign, there were more than enough signatures, but the MLA in question resigned.

The voter must apply to Elections B.C. for approval to go ahead with a

recall campaign. If Elections B.C. approves it, there is a 60-day period to collect signatures from more than 40 per cent of eligible voters in the riding.

If an MLA is successfully booted out of office, a byelection would follow.

The board’s top 10 recommendations are: go for a walk, star gaze, play board games by candlelight, have a fondue or fire pit dinner, tell ghost stories, have a flash-

light scavenger hunt, exercise or meditate, go to bed early, unplug electronic devices and make a pledge for the planet.

The board is asking those who go to the Riverway Clubhouse for Earth Hour to tweet photos to @BurnabyBOT. The hashtag for Earth Hour in the city is #EarthHourBBY. Burnaby reduced electricity consumption by 1.9 per cent during Earth Hour in 2014, nearly double the provincial average of 1 per cent, according to B.C. Hydro.

The province reduced electrical consumption by 65 megawatt hours.

This year will mark the ninth annual Earth Hour event world-wide.The campaign started in Australia in 2007, and has since expanded to more than 162 countries and territories, according to the Earth Hour website. For more information, visit bbot.ca or www. earthhour.org.

Pool stays open

It’s business as usual at the C.G. Brown Memorial Pool after a car crashed through the front wall of the building Tuesday afternoon.

Firefighters were called to the Kensington Avenue pool around 2 p.m.When they arrived on scene, they found a car lodged halfway into the facility’s laundry room.

“There was a person trapped and our guys managed to free her quite quickly, and by luck (there were) no serious injuries,” Burnaby fire Capt. DaveYounger told the NOW. At the time of the crash the laundry room was empty and there were no pedestrians out front.The driver of the vehicle suffered some minor injuries and was checked over by paramedics at the scene.

Younger said there was “some kind of incident” that caused the driver to lose control of her vehicle and

accelerate into the building.

“It did not stop, it actually accelerated and hit into the side of the building. Luckily it missed the (chemical room) by several feet,” he said.

In fact, other than the broken brick wall, there was no significant damage at all, at least nothing that would force the city to close the facility. Crews have already boarded up the hole left behind by the car, and repairs to the brick wall are expected sometime in the next few months, said Dave Ellenwood, director of parks, recreation and cultural services for the City of Burnaby.

“It looks worse from the inside than the outside because the inside, (the car) sort of just pushed in the wall and spread some debris, which we’ll have to clean up,” he added.

News now Tories announce new candidate for Burnaby

Paul Forseth has traditionally been the Tories’ candidate of choice in the federal riding of Burnaby–New Westminster, but there’s a new face in the race.

New Westminster resident Chloé Ellis was named the Conservatives’ official candidate at a riding association meeting on Wednesday.

“I am grateful and humbled to be named as the Conservative candidate in New Westminster–Burnaby,” Ellis said in a media statement from the party.

Ellis, who could not immediately be reached for comment, has a business background and is in her 20s.

“She was part of our riding association board going back an number of years, and she did help in my campaign in 2001,” said Forseth, a former MP who’s run for the Conserva-

tives in New Westminster in the past six elections. “I said maybe it’s time to let the next generation come along and see who comes out, and Chloe came out for it.”

According to a party press release, Ellis is a New Westminster Hyack Association supporter, and she owns a home in the city. She also served on the Burnaby – New Westminster electoral district association as a financial agent.

Forseth said she’s been active with the Conservative Party and was on the board of the local riding association.

“She’s a very bright and enthusiastic young person,” he added.

Ellis’ candidate website states she’s been working and living in New Westminster and North Burnaby since 2009.

Her job experience includes working as a Starbucks supervisor in Burnaby and a general manager of a Vancouver hair salon.

She also has a bachelor’s degree in marketing management from Langara College, and in 2013, she was working on a master’s of business administration from the University of Northern B.C. Ellis was also a Conservative Party representative with the Universities’ Model Parliament Society of B.C., where she helped bring in the organization’s first policies on sexual harassment and social media.

The MP for the current Burnaby–New Westminster riding is the NDP’s Peter Julian, who’s held onto his seat by a fairly wide margin since 2004.

The riding is undergoing changes, as a federal commission has redrawn the boundaries and changed the name to New Westminster– Burnaby.

The new riding unites all of New Westminster and includes parts of South Burnaby.

Are we leaping into another mess?

The only thing we are certain about Iraq and Syria is that Canadian Forces will be there for a while.That news comes after the prime minister stood in Parliament this week and announced plans for an extension of the mission.

Ever the astute politician, the PM used his considerable power to extend the mission for a

whole year, rather than another six months.Why risk having this go sideways on us in the heat of a federal election?

And the mission isn’t just going to run a year longer. It’s also going to expand across the borders of Syria, where a dictator and largely Islamist rebel opposition have been deadlocked in a bloody civil war for

We question whether the preferred way to deal with a violent quagmire should be yet another violent quagmire.

Any use of our military in a foreign land needs to have crystal clear goals, a well thought-out plan to ensure we achieve them and markers to know when the mission’s been

accomplished.That’s over and above having a justification that Canadians can stand behind.

That’s not what we’re getting.

So, flash forward a year, a few hundred million dollars and some more dead soldiers and what will we have?

Why Gen Xers are voting Yes Today I put on my political pundit hat to make this prediction: Generation X is going to voteYes in the transit referendum.

As a Gen Xer myself, I can find all sorts of reasons why people of my age and station in life are finding themselves drawn to the Yes vote. No, it’s not clearcut – there’s a whole host of compelling arguments on the No side, too – but there are some things about Gen Xers that make us perfect fodder for theYes side.

First, we’ve gotten over ourselves. Mostly, anyway.

We get that just because we want something doesn’t mean we’re going to get it.

Sure, we’d like a way better TransLink – a more accountable, less apparently out-of-touch-with-reality one – and, even more, we’d really like it if Christy Clark had just lived up to the responsibilities of the premier’s office and properly funded transit and transportation in the first place.

We roll our eyes about the fact that this whole thing is even going to a referendum – seriously, who on earth would entrust a plan so integral to the future of our region to the whims of a popular vote? – but we sigh and accept that what we have is what we’ve got.

We’re realists. Not the pseudo-cynics we tried to be back in our twenties, but actual pragmatic, commonsensical grown-ups.We know that there’s no such thing as perfection, that the

system is broken (thanks a lot, baby boomers) and that the planet is heading downhill rapidly (thanks again, baby boomers). But we’ve gotten over being bitter about that (mostly, anyway) and we’ve just decided to make do with what we have.

And what we have, right now, is a chance to vote on a pretty impressive transit and transportation plan that does its best to satisfy the needs of everyone living in the Lower Mainland – from transit-dependent millennials to minivan-driving Gen Xers like ourselves to boomers in their luxury cars and the once-again-transit-dependent Silent Generation (who are, in many cases, our own parents).

Which brings me to another reason we’re voting Yes:We’re caretakers.We own houses and mow lawns and have kids in school – and, in many cases, we have parents who are aging and who will soon need more help from us, too.Whether we want to be or not, we’re no longer the centre of our own universe.Which means we can look beyond the “what will this do for my drive to work?” question and consider the greater good of the region when we cast our vote.

New school threatens creek The leader of a local environmental group opposed to the proposed site of a new high school at Lougheed Highway and Gaglardi Way took her fight to city hall after her voice went unheard by the school board. Stoney Creek Environmental Committee chair Jennifer Atchison wrote a letter to city council, saying she wanted to make a public presentation about the damage the new school would do to the Stoney Creek watershed and to salmon that had recently returned to spawn . Dear Editor Just a comment on your story re: Mayor Corrigan and the cellphone/wallet/ brick or whatever. It is stated that the mayor in question claimed that holding the phone in hand (dead or alive) was due to absent-mindedness and a lack of knowledge; this from a man who deals in millions of dollars gleaned from taxpayers!

It has always been my understanding that driving with one hand is taboo – (certainly while first acquiring or renewing one’s licence), just ask the motor vehicle office or their instructors. But what is really astounding is that it took no less than (what?) one year and eight months for the case to come to completion. Makes one wonder how much this cost ratepayers? I’m betting it’s more than a paltry $167.

All that said, we all make mistakes (I know I have) but the best route is usually to admit it, pay what society demands, and move on – preferably with both hands firmly on the steering wheel.

We need a Green government right now Dear Editor When we think about the risks of moving more fossil fuels through B.C., do we keep all factors in mind?

A recent letter to the local press conceded that accidents do still occur but pointed to the steadily improving track record of oil tankers.

Yet the writer was entirely silent on the increased potential for accidents that surely will come with the huge increase in tanker traffic planned for our waters. Nobody plans to have an accident, of course, yet increased shipping steeply raises the odds that we’ll have one, and it takes just one major accident to dramatically change a locale – the Halifax Explosion comes to mind.

Tanker traffic isn’t the only worry. There are few fires in the port of Vancouver, which has a good safety record. Even so, accidents will happen, and a fire at a pumping station could have a big impact on both port and city.

The risks don’t end with port accidents.

Consider the use of pipelines to transport oil or bitumen across the province on route to foreign markets.

The oil pipeline accident of 2010 on the Kalamazoo River took four years to clean up.

The Japanese sees the statue as a symbol of anti-Japanese sentiments by Koreans. Similar statues erected in Glendale, California and Fairfax, Virginia last year have sparked deep division between local Japanese and Korean communities, as well as being labeled by Japanese interests as “anti-Japanese”. If the City of Burnaby decides to go ahead with the plan, then they should expect an onslaught of unwanted Japanese and Korean media attention, and the whole region will be labeled as unwelcoming to the Japanese. And there will be negative impact to the local Japanese and Korean communities which JapaneseCanadians who had nothing to do with Japan during WWII but was interned by the Canadian government and those who were born and raised in Canada will also be affected.

Huh I wonder how Burnaby’s sister city of Kushiro will feel about the statue.

I believe there are plans this year to commemorate the 50th anniversary of their relationship.

“When I first looked, she had two eggs on the side,” he said. “She was alongside; she wasn’t sitting on them.”

An ex-farm boy, he said his first instinct was to calculate the bird’s hatching time.

Kitimat visitor Lois Slovak said she didn’t see the eggs at first but thought the pigeon looked like a brooding hen.

“Finally, she was repositioning herself, and I saw a couple eggs, and I was so excited,” she said.

It doesn’t last long though, according to registered nurse Jenny Lee, who’s been watching the birds for three years.

“They grow so fast,” she said. “I had five days off one year, and I came back here, and they had grown half the size of other pigeons.”

Precisely because the baby pigeons bring joy to

so many people, however, Dickeson tries to put a stop to the spectacle every year.

He’s no spoilsport; he’s just seen the dark side of their annual struggle for life.

One year, early on a Saturday morning, he looked in on the babies after crows had ravaged the nest.

“They call it a murder of crows – there’s a reason for it,” he said. “Nothing could be done to save the chicks that day.”

Mercifully, the predators were done their bloody work early.

“Nobody really knew what happened to the pigeon babies but me,” Dickeson said.

Now, every time the pigeons start scratching a nest together on the ledge in late winter, he tries to prevent them by tapping on the window, but the birds set up shop anyway, and the circle of life goes on.

“People think I’m crazy,” Dickeson said, “but it’s for a good reason.”

News now Health-care rally planned Health-care workers will rally in front of Burnaby Hospital Tuesday to protest privatization and 10 years of federal funding cuts.

The demonstration – one of 33 around B.C. that day – is being organized by the Hospital Employees Union to mark a decade of cuts to health-care transfers from Ottawa to the provinces.

The union says B.C.’s share of the cuts totals $5 billion, and the Conference Board of Canada recently determined the province

would need to invest $1.8 billion more than budgeted for health care between 2014 and 2017 to maintain current service levels.

The union says underfunding of services is being felt in many ways, citing mass layoffs of health care workers because of contracting-out and contract flips. Between Jan. 21 and Feb. 26, HEU said nearly 1,500 health care workers were laid off at care homes and hospitals across B.C. In Burnaby, more than 100

workers lost their jobs at Harmony Court last month.

“Many of them have been there for years and have relationships with the residents,” HEU communications officer Neil Monckton told the NOW, “and the continuity of care is thrown into question and creating chaos and instability for both workers and residents.”

The rally is set for 11:30 a.m. in front of the hospital at Ingleton Avenue and Sunset Street.

News now Burnaby man still missing Mounties are asking for help locating a 38-year-old man who hasn’t been seen since Feb. 28.

Berhane Beraky was last seen leaving his work in North Burnaby around 5:50 p.m. on Feb. 28, according to a media release from Burnaby RCMP.

Investigators say it is unusual for Beraky not to return home or show up for work.

Beraky is described as an African-Canadian, 5-7 and 148 pounds. He has short black hair, brown eyes and a thin moustache. He was last seen wearing a beige kha-

ki jacket with an off-white jacket underneath, dark pants, and carrying a black backpack.

Burnaby residents strolling through Central Park this weekend might be in for a close encounter with a fast-moving snitch and a couple of seekers in hot pursuit.

Fans of the Harry Potter books and movies will recognize those terms from author J.K. Rowling’s fictional game of Quidditch.

Since 2005, the madeup game has evolved into a real-life sport, and it returns to Burnaby this weekend as the city hosts the inaugural Quidditch Canada National Championship at Swangard Stadium.

Quidditch made its debut in the city last summer, when teams from around the world descended on the Burnaby Lake Sports Complex for the Global Games.

It was intense, and it looked fun.

The success of that tournament along with the west coast’s hospitable weather prompted Quidditch Canada to look to Burnaby again for the nationals.

Last summer’s international competition also inspired the founding of the Vancouver Vipertooths, who will have the home-field advantage this weekend.

Made up of players from Vancouver, Burnaby, New Westminster and the Fraser Valley, the team practises twice a week at Central Park.

Before the Global Games, its captain – New West resident Scott Muxlow – had never seen real-life quidditch played.

He expected a “silly game” and was surprised.

“It was intense, and it looked fun,” he told the NOW. A co-ed, full-con-

tact game, quidditch features seven players running around a elliptical pitch with brooms between their legs, attempting to score points by throwing the quaffle (a slightly deflated volleyball) through hoops of varying heights at either end.

The duration of a game depends on how long it takes one of two “seekers” in the game to catch the snitch (a tennis ball tucked inside a sock and attached to the waist of a neutral snitch runner).

That feat ends the game and earns the successful seeker’s team 30 points.

Communitynow Cyclist wants safer road Tereza Verenca

A recent letter to the NOW regarding cyclist safety on urban trails has prompted an immediate response from the city.

Trevor Penner emailed the NOW on March 6, asking for clarification around the rules of the road when it comes to urban trails.

“Specifically the one that runs along Moscrop and Deer Lake Parkway. I was driving to work yesterday and had an incident with a cyclist.Thankfully there was no collision, but it did highlight a conflict in the right-of-way rules,” the letter reads.

Penner was driving east on Moscrop and was about to turn left ontoWillingdon Avenue. Meanwhile, a cyclist was coming down the urban trail in front of Mo-

scrop Secondary School and across the crosswalk Penner was about to go through.

No contact was made.

“While I fully support infrastructure to make cycling easier or more accessible, it seems like this is inappropriate infrastructure for the topography, creating a dangerous situation,” Penner wrote.

Doug Louie, spokesperson for the city’s transportation services department, said the crosswalk was constructed for both pedestrians and cyclists.

“To indicate this, we’ve put in short-dashed lines parallel to the pavement marking for pedestrians. On either end of the crosswalk, we also put in some signs showing it’s a shared space,” he told the NOW. Louie added safety is everyone’s responsibility.

Muxlow, who has played sports of all kinds, including 17 years of hockey and 12 years of rep baseball, is both.

The Vipertooths started off last September with a sizeable contingent from Muxlow’s wife Erin’s live action role play crowd, but are now drawing rugby and ultimate Frisbee players as well.

Going into the nationals, Muxlow knows his team has its work cut out for it, going up against teams like McGill that have been around since 2008.

“I think we’re definitely the underdogs here,” Muxlow said. “We’re probably

the newest team.”

That being said, he’s happy Burnaby has embraced the sport, and he’s looking forward to putting his team’s best foot forward for the rest of the country.

“Being able to have this and prove that West Coast quidditch is here and we’re ready to play is going to be amazing,” he said.

The seven-team Quidditch Canada National Championship kicks off at 10 a.m. when the Vipertooths take on McGill Quidditch.The SFU Marauders take on the Winnipeg Whomping Willows at 10:40 a.m.The action continues at 9 a.m. Sunday, with the championship game scheduled for 2 p.m.

The Heights Neighbourhood Association is looking for old pictures or films of Gilmore Community School for the 100th anniversary celebrations.

The association has commissioned local artist Yunuen Perez Vertti to direct a 30-minute film about the school’s history.

An estimated 30,000 students have attended Gilmore since the school opened in 1915, when much of the surrounding area was still farmland.

The association is looking for old eight- and 16-millimetre films or video of the school.

Anyone with stories to tell about Gilmore is encouraged to get in touch with project organizers.

Art lovers, you’ll want to make time in your schedule for these special upcoming exhibitions.

The Deer Lake Gallery and Burnaby Art Gallery will both be hosting exhibitions in recognition of the Art Across the Pacific cultural exchange.

A year ago, 10 artists and photographers from the Burnaby Artists Guild made a trek to Guiyang in Southwestern China – now, 10 artists from Guiyang are making the return trip here.

From March 31 to April 6, the Chinese artists will be joining their Burnaby colleagues in a number of activities focused on Burnaby – including two group exhibitions at the galleries, as mentioned above, plus painting “en plein air” at Burnaby Village Museum and the Dr. SunYat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden in Vancouver.

A press release notes that the two groups represent a broad spectrum of artists, amateur and professional, with a wide variety of painting styles and subject matter.

You can catch a group exhibition at Burnaby Art Gallery from April 3 to 5 in the Lower Gallery, with an opening reception on Thursday, April 2 at 7 p.m.

It’s a cross-cultural showcase featuring traditional Chinese painting as interpreted by well-known contemporary artists and Burnaby Artists Guild members.

Expect to find a wide range of mediums – including pen and ink, watercolour, oils, acrylics, woodcut prints, mixed media and photography.

More Mature and Even More Luxurious

Of all the recent introductions, one of the most impressive is Mercedes-Benz’s new compact luxury sedan, the C-Class.

Overall, the new C-Class looks much more expensive than it actually costs.

Now in its fifth generation, the C-Class has always been an important car for MercedesBenz. The previous generation was one of the best selling vehicles in its lineup, making it a staple for the brand.

The C-Class will never be a weekend autocross racer, but thanks to this model’s reduced weight and improved engineering, it feels more spirited all around.

While you are insulated from the road and steering feedback is a little muted, the chassis is solid and provides crisp handling. In fact, I would say that the steering feel of the C-Class is far better than even-more-numb Lexus IS or BMW 3-series.

Competing with the likes of BMW 3 Series, Audi A4 and Lexus IS, the new C-Class has moved more upmarket to provide a compelling case in this competitive segment.

The recently introduced CLA-Class is the new entry-level car which allows the C-Class to move upscale in both the design and price point.

Design

All-new for 2015, the C-Class is larger, lighter and it offers more luxury features than its predecessor.

With Mercedes-Benz giving its whole range a makeover - which includes its flagship S-Class - you can definitely see how the brand is trying to carry similar design elements onto the C-Class.

However, the C-Class is still a very different car. Thanks to its dimensions and exterior proportions, it gives off a sportier and more youthful appeal.

The C-Class is now available with many features previously only available on the larger and more expensive models, the E-Class and S-Class. As a result, in terms of safety, convenience, and luxury features, it sets a whole new standard.

The front grille is aggressive and mixed with sweeping character lines and short overhangs, giving it a more purposeful appearance than the CLA. The short overhung rear design brings a balance to the overall look.

Standard static LED headlights are added to the already standard LED taillights. Active LED high performance headlamps are available as an option.

The business-like cabin of the old C-Class has been replaced by a welcoming and attractive interior. There is an array of wood and aluminum finishes to choose from.

Performance

The driver and front passenger are granted plenty of space and luxury appointments. Mercedes-Benz wanted the C-Class to feel like flying in first class cabin, and I think they’ve achieved it.

The increase to the C-Class’ size was to account for consumer’s desire to have more and more space.

Rear passengers benefit the most from the additional 3.7-inches in length – they now travel in even more comfort.

C 300 models come with a 2.0-litre turbocharged fourcylinder with 241 hp and 273 lb-ft of torque.

The cargo also reaps the rewards of the larger size and the C-Class’s trunk has grown to 17 cubic feet as a result.

Those interested in more performance can opt for the C 400, which has a 3.0-litre V6 that produces an impressive 329 hp and 354 lb-ft of torque.

A large one-piece centre console panel splits the cabin from air vents to armrest. The free-standing display is eye-catching, but can look a bit like an afterthought.

The only drivetrain available is Mercedes’ 4MATIC permanent all-wheel drive system. This serves to improve traction and driving stability.

Use of the infotainment is channelled through the innovative touchpad in the handrest. Operation is reasonably intuitive and the touchpad can recognize letters, numbers and special characters in any language.

Tactile feedback is given to the user to further ease use.

Providing smooth shifting is an updated seven-speed automatic transmission that has a quick, crisp feel both up and down the shifting process.

The new C-Class is the first in this segment to come with full air suspension. It limits road noise and vibration thanks to electronically controlled, continuous variable damping. AGILITY SELECT allows you to choose between four distinctive characteristics – Comfort, ECO, Sport and Sport+. This system is superior to anything else on the road, and brings the road feel of the C-Class a few notches above its competitors.

The new C-Class features many of the new driver assistance systems that have debuted on the S-Class a few months ago.

These systems enhance both comfort and safety.

Protecting against low-speed collisions is an Adaptive Brake Assist, but COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST PLUS is now standard and it can carry out autonomous braking at speeds of up to 200 km/h. This system can also brake for stationary vehicles from up to 50 km/h and is able to prevent rear-end collisions at speeds of up to 40 km/h.

Another favourite feature is DISTRONIC PLUS with Steering Assist. This is a semi-automatic traffic jam assistant that is able to follow the vehicle ahead, even where lane markings are unclear or lacking, at speeds under 60 km/h.

Additional features, available as options or on higher trims, include online navigation, panoramic sunroof, rearview camera, active parking assist, and the INTELLIGENT DRIVE Package Fuel efficiency numbers (L/100km) for the C 300 are 10.1 city and 7.8 highway. The C 400 returns 11.1 city and 8.4 highway.

The C-Class makes the daily commute a joy, and thanks to its intelligent technologies, traffic jams are no longer a threat.

Thumbs Down

Not much to complain about this first-class model, other than perhaps that its durability is yet to be determined because it’s the first time C-Class is being produced at Mercedes’ US plant.

The Bottom Line

The 2015 C-Class is an impressive luxury car with all the modern and traditional amenities that can only be found in more expensive vehicles.

TOYOTA I-ROAD MAKES CAR-SHARING IN-ROADS: The ultra compact, electric three-wheeled Toyota i-Road begins service in a new car-sharing program in central Tokyo in April.The vehicle, which leans into corners like a motorcycle, is already part of a coordinated public transport service in Grenoble, France, and in Toyota City, Japan.The new trial, which runs until the end of September, sees the i-Road as part of a service that allows members to make use of a fleet of sharecars at any time of day.The focus is on the i-Road being used for trips to businesses, shops and sightseeing locations. Users will pick up their vehicle from the centrally located Times Station, and later return them to any of five other locations.

MITSU AIMS TO SELL MORE I-MIEVS: The original mass-produced electric car is coming back to the United States as a 2016 model, with more attractive financing options to help boost its segmenttrailing sales.The tiny Mitsubishi i-MiEV has so far failed to win the affections of U.S. car buyers as only 195 shelled out the $22,995 MSRP (before incentives) for one in 2014, notes electric car website, Inside EVs. In January, only one new iMiEV found a home in the U.S. market, making it more rare than many impossibly priced exotic supercars. Undaunted, Mitsubishi said the 2016 model would be available “probably in March,” and that its “packaging options” would likely also be further adjusted to attract more buyers. No 2016 details or specifications were released.

ELECTRIC SHOWROOM ADOPTS BOUTIQUE APPROACH: Wannabe electric-sportscar maker Detroit Electric has designed its first flagship store, to open on the same site as the company’s dedicated production fa-

cility in Leamington Spa in the United Kingdom. It prominently features DE’s SP:01 pure electric sports car, “soon” to begin production in a plant next door to the boutique showroom.

Customers will be able to “build” their own SP:01 on large touch screen displays in the showroom to unique, bespoke specifications, before discussing their vehicles in detail with Detroit Electric staff in an exclusive customer area in the store. Detroit Electric describes itself as a brand that can trace its roots back to 1907, “now revived a little over a century later.”Will a showroom in Detroit follow next?

SAMSUNG SEES ELECTRIC CARS IN ITS FUTURE: Korean electronics giant Samsung has bought the battery-pack division of Canadian automotive supplier Magna International in a bid to advance its electric car credentials. Samsung will take over Austrian-based Magna subsidiary Magna Steyr, its 250 employees, production sites and contracts.This isn’t Samsung’s first foray into cars, reports Internet-technology magazine VentureBeat. Samsung’s “materials and energy” subsidiary, Samsung SDI, has been working on lithium-ion battery cell technology with BMW since 2009; the two companies recently announced an extension to their deal for two electric cars in particular, the BMW i3 and i8. Samsung’s interest in electric vehicles also includes filing for patents in the United States and South Korea for technologies that are applicable to EVs. VIA MOTORS SEES MARKET FOR PLUG-IN WORK VEHICLES AS MOBILE GENERATORS: Orem, Utah-based Via Motors, an assembler of plug-in hybrid pickups and delivery vans, is gearing up to sell 50,000 vehicles per year within three years, company chairman Bob Lutz told Bloomberg news service. Modeled after the Chevrolet Volt’s driveline, which has a gasoline-powered generator that extends driving range by providing electricity to the battery pack, the plug-in trucks cut fuel costs and provide elec-

Dear Car Talk: I’m 72, and I have a 2007 Ford Focus.At unpredictable intervals, my brake pedal goes all the way to the floor.This happens in wet weather every few months. It happened again last night. I had driven for about five or six minutes, and the pedal went all the way to the floor. My car just kept rolling right along. I have learned to pump the pedal, and it corrects itself and works fine after that ... until it happens again, a few months later.The dealer says it is not happening. But it IS happening, and I’m afraid it will cause my death eventually. Do you have any idea what could be done to prevent this?

– Catherine No, but you might want to tie a king-size air mattress to your front bumper until you figure it out, Catherine.

Actually, I think your dealer is acting unconscionably by telling you it’s not happening -- and by sending you back on the road without attempting to fix it.

Send copies of those repair orders, where he wrote that,

to the executor of your will, so at least your heirs can own the dealership if this does cause your death.

But we’d rather make sure it doesn’t. So tell your dealer to start by replacing your brake master cylinder.

Based on the symptoms, that’s the most likely culprit.

A bad master cylinder can fail intermittently, and then regain pressure.

A stuck brake or parking brake also can cause this condition by causing your brake fluid to boil and your brakes to fail. But that’s unlikely to happen after only five or six minutes of driving, so I’d lean toward the master cylinder.

They have to try something.They can’t just let you drive around with disappearing brakes. So have the dealer put in a master cylinder, and hope that solves the problem. And if not, have them make their next best guess, whatever it is, and try another brake system component.You have to get to the bottom of this, Catherine, before you end up in the package compartment of a stopped UPS truck.

One of the best things about Italian cuisine can be its simplicity, and one of the best things about winter is eating soup.

One of the commonly asked questions directed to me is for easy, fast, and delicious soup recipes.This is the one I recommend all the time.

This soup is hearty and because it is loaded with Italian sausage, gnocchi pasta, tomatoes, garlic, and in-

credible cheese it is everything you would expect from an Italian soup … but also very quick and easy to prepare.

One of the best things about winter is eating soup If you have never heard of “gnocchi” pasta before, don’t despair – vacuum sealed packages of the small

dumpling-like pasta shapes can be found at almost all major grocery stores down the pasta aisle.

Don’t underestimate the choice of the Pecorino Romano cheese as the finishing garnish for this soup as it adds incredible flavour and compliments and balances all the other flavours in this soup beautifully. Large shavings of this cheese are easily prepared with a simple vegetable peeler – shave it directly onto the individually bowled soup portions just prior to serving – this looks much more rustic and gourmet than simply grating

it, but either way is fine.

If you can’t find Pecorino Romano, a chunk of Parmigiano Reggiano will have to suffice. Enjoy and keep warm this winter.

Italian Sausage Gnocchi Soup 500g raw mild Italian sausage, casings removed and discarded 1 tbsp olive oil 6 garlic cloves, minced 1/2 cup finely chopped onion 1.5 tsp salt 1/2 tsp pepper 1 – 796 ml can of diced tomatoes

1,800 ml chicken broth 1 tsp sugar 1 – 500g package of potato gnocchi pasta 1 packed cup fresh baby spinach leaves 1/4 cup thinly sliced fresh basil Generous amounts of shaved Pecorino Romano cheese Add the sausage meat, olive oil, garlic, onion, salt and pepper to a large pot.Turn the heat to medium and cook for approximately five to seven minutes until the sausage in cooked through, while breaking up the sau-

sage meat with a spoon as it cooks.

Add the can of tomatoes, chicken broth and sugar. Increase the heat to medium high to bring to a boil. Once boiling, add the gnocchi and continue to cook for three minutes.

Remove the pot from the heat. Stir in the spinach and basil and portion out immediately; garnished with generous amounts of shaved Pecorino Romano cheese.

Makes approximately 13 cups.

It’s not always easy to use tiny amounts of gardening space in ways that are useful as well as beautiful‚ but some herbs manage to do exactly that. All are easy to get and most aren’t difficult to look after.

People who have room for a few containers can find chives the most co-operative and versatile of doorside plants.The leaves of these hardy onion-family plants lurk underground all winter then erupt in early spring, tender and delicately flavoured ready to be snipped into salads, soups or be used as garnishes.

Later, round heads of long-lasting pink-purple flowers stay decorative for many weeks or can be picked for a dry vase where (if taken early) they keep their colour for months.

Parsley is another essential kitchen herb. It’s best grown from seed sown in early spring, and because it’s tap-rooted it is somewhat drought-resistant.The plain-leaf Italian version is

Rosemary is beautiful and so useful aside from being not quite hardy.The only variety that can be kept outside in winter is Hardy Arp, which is said to be good down to Zone 6 in a warm, sunny sheltered place. All the others need to be winterized inside. Rosemary handles winter better if it’s in dry soil.

As a fragrant, beautiful

pot plant rosemary is outstanding. Rex is narrow and has pyramidal dark green leaves and deep blue flowers, Santa Barbara is a trailer that works well in hanging baskets, and Golden Rain has young branches slashed with gold in spring.

Sage is a nice pot plant, which keeps its compact shape if you’re sure to cut it back in spring as soon as new shoots begin to sprout.

Berggarten is my favourite

for cooking with its large, soft grey leaves.

Other sages making a nice grouping for gardens (and a tasty sampling for kitchens) are purple, tri-colour and golden sage-variegated.

It’s safer to mulch them in winter if you’re not a coastal gardener.

If you could go back in time what would you change?

When I was discharged from the Air Force I would’ve gone to the University of Toronto, which was 500 miles south of Timmins, instead of taking the payout. It seems so far away that I decided to take the payout instead of going to university and taking engineering. I ended up taking an engineering course from the States and then I found out afterwards that it was not recognized in Canada.

Adam Helewka’s story is not an uncommon one.

Getting dropped from a minor hockey team is something most every young athlete experiences at some point in their careers.

To some it could be a turning point in their youthful careers – whether for good or bad. Some might take the rejection to heart – blame others perhaps – or give up altogether.

But Helewka isn’t that kind of player.

The 19-year-old Burnaby left winger finished his third season with the Spokane Chiefs of the Western Hockey League with 87 points – eighth overall – and fifth in total goals with 44.

Helewka ended the regular season as a second star with two goals and a single assist in Spokane’s 5-4 loss to the Everett Silvertips last Sunday.

He was also sixth in the league with 12 power-play markers and sixth with eight game-opening tallies, earning the 6-1, 200-pound forward Spokane’s player of the year.

“I was cut from a lot of teams when I was younger.

But it only made we want to prove a lot of people wrong,” said Helewka in a telephone interview with

the NOW. “Hockey is my one love. I could never quit.

I had to keep going and to motivate myself to keep going until I get what I want.”

That end goal is what just about every young hockey player dreams of – and that is one day playing in the pros.

At 15, Helewka went to Saskatchewan to play at the Notre Dame hockey academy team, where he scored 37 goals in 49 games.

He returned home the

following year and earned a spot on the Northwest Giants major midget team.

Undrafted, Helewka tried out in Spokane as a free agent and went on to post a rookie of the year season with the Chiefs.

In his second year in the major junior league, Helewka was talked about as a possible third-round prospect in the 2014 NHL entry draft.

Although talented offensively, with good hockey

sense and a competent mistake-free air to his game, Helewka did not hear his name called at the draft.

The knock may have been Helewka’s zero plus/ minus while playing alongside high-scoring firstlinemates Mitch Holmberg and Mike Aviani, both multi-plus players for the Chiefs.

The setback did not deter the “Burnaby Boy”.

He came into this year’s camp bigger and stronger

and more determined than ever to meet the challenges ahead.

“I knew it was a big year for me. I knew I had to be a leader. I knew I had to be good every night and that’s what I’ve tried to focus on,” Helewka said.

Erin Chambers was named to the Daktronics/Division II Conference Commissioners Association Women’s Basketball and the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association All-America teams as an honourable mention for a second consecutive year.

The Simon Fraser University senior was earlier named the Great Northwest Athletic conference player of the year and to the West Region all-region first team after setting an all-time conference women’s scoring record while also finishing third in nation-wide Div.

The Mission senior finished her career as the leading scorer in Great Northwest history with 1,946 points, while starting 113 of 114 games over her fouryear career on Burnaby Mountain.

Chambers also ranked in the top 10 in the conference in assists, free throw percentage and three-pointers made this season while helping the Clan reach their fifth straight conference tournament.

The two-time first-team West Region selection also ended her career in the conference top 15 all-time in three-point field goals

made, free throws made and free throw percentage.

Four other West Region players were also honoured by conference commissioners.

Hawaii Pacific’s Morganne Comstock, the West Region player of the year, was voted to the All-American second team, while Jada Blackwell from Cal Poly Pomona and Megan Mullings from Alaska Anchorage were also honorable mention selections.

Shareta Brown of Wayne State University was named the 2015 Div. II women’s basketball national player of the year. Brown averaged 22.0 points and 14.7 rebounds per contest.

Pro sports car racer Michael Valiante helped Daytona Beach-based Visit Florida Racing to a second straight third-place finish in the United sportscar series.

Valiante, who co-drove the Chevrolet Corvette Daytona Prototype to third at a 24-hour event earlier this month, again placed third at the 12 Hours of Sebring, America’s oldest sports car race last weekend.

“The team was able to get better all weekend and we survived the heat and the mechanical stress this track puts on a car and brought home a great podium finish,” said Valiante in a team press release.

Chevrolet cars also took first and second place at Sebring, giving the Corvette DP a sweep of the top places at the 3.74-mile raceway.

The Action Express Racing team of Christian Fittipaldi and Sebastien Bourdais took the checkered flag in a Corvette, leading 246 of 340 laps, for Chevrolet’s first victory at Sebring in 50 years.

The trio of Richard Westbrook,Valiante and Mike Rockenfeller finished one lap behind the winning Action Racing team and just 12 seconds behind the runner-up Wayne Taylor Racing team.

The No. 90 Visit Florida Racing car led for a total of 15 laps in the race.

With the finish,Valiante and company unofficially sit in second spot in championship standings.

Valiante,Westbrook and Rockenfeller are currently in third place in overall driver standings.

The next stop on the United sportscar circuit is the Showcase at Long Beach race on April 18.

In the Continental Tire Sportscar Challenge race, held in conjunction with the United championship, Burnaby’s Remo Ruscitti co-drove a Mini JCW to 18th place in the street tuner class at Sebring.

More than 140 cars representing four different International Motor Sports Association series took part.

Simon Fraser University redshirt freshman Oscar Bulaqui won the 50-kilogram title for a second year in a row at the Canadian junior/senior wrestling championships at Brock University in St. Catharines, Ont. Bulaqui was crowned champion after pinning Motkual Said of Sudbury, Ont. two minutes and seven seconds into the championship final. Bulaqui won his first two matches by technical fall to reach the final.

“Oscar got an early takedown in the final and then turned Said three times before pinning him on his back,” said Clan coach Jus-

tin Abdou in a SFU press release. “Oscar is not usually a pinner but he used his speed and power to his advantage.”

Last year as a high school senior at St Thomas Aquinas, Bulaqui won his first Canadian junior national title. He will be eligible next year to defend his title.

Today, Helewka is considered by hockey insiders as a long-term prospect and, as a second-year eligible player, is projected to be a possible sixth-round pick in this season’s draft.

But it’s believable when Helewka says that prospect doesn’t concern him at this point in time.

“Every hockey player dreams to be drafted,” Helewka said. “You can’t give up, you have to keep motivated. … But I’m not really thinking about that right now. I’m just getting ready for the playoffs.”

This Friday, Helewka and the Spokane Chiefs begin their first round best-of-seven

series with U.S. division champion Everett Silvertips.

It’s a tall order for Spokane, which snuck into the post season with a near .500 regular season record.

But for Helewka, it’s another challenge he knows he must meet to put behind last season’s four-and-out playoff against Victoria.

“Yeah, that’s exactly it,” he said. “We lost four straight to Victoria last season. … But I’m one year older, one year more experienced, I have to step up and be one of those big players every night.

“Yeah, it’s a lot of pressure, but it can either help you or crush you.

“I wanted to be a leader on this team. I wanted to be a go-to-guy. I think I succeeded with that goal. Hard work pays off.”
