shop It can be argued that no area in Burnaby has a more interesting history than the Heights.

The

The Heights is one of three hills – Capitol Hill and Burnaby Mountain are the others, each successively higher as you go east – that face Burrard Inlet. Thousands of immigrants came to the area with the opening of Hastings Street in 1902 and the arrival of the streetcar in North Burnaby in 1908. With population growth, the first merchants soon appeared. Many Italians called the Heights home, joining the English and Irish immigrants who had come before. Formed as an official business improvement area in 1994, the Heights Merchants Association focuses on issues affecting the area. Many of the stores in the Heights are owned by second and third generation merchants. This is balanced by a wide range of newer stores and services, some run by new immigrants from diverse cultures. This diversity makes the Heights an area that truly feels like a small town with a big heart. For information, go to www.burnabyheights.com.

MARKET crossing

Burnaby’s newest shopping mecca is Market Crossing in the Big Bend area. The area has been transformed into Burnaby’s latest must-stop shopping location, as its mix of stores, restaurants and services is unparalleled in the city. The area also includes pristine parkland, river views and the Riverway Golf Course, which is amongst the toughest and best courses in the Lower Mainland. What was formerly farmland and a quiet, untraveled area is now one of the city’s busiest areas, with stores on both sides of Marine Way near Byrne Road. If you’re looking for great food, the Cactus Club is already one of the most popular meeting places in the area. The eatery recently won “Best Patio” in the Best of Burnaby awards. Market Crossing is proving popular for Burnaby, New Westminster and South Vancouver residents, who find it easily accessible by car, with ample free parking.

Ethnic dining Burnaby has no shortage of great ethnic dining options. From Oriental to African to South American, you can literally travel the world with your taste buds in Burnaby. There are too many great ethnic restaurants to list here, but here are three favourites that take you from Africa to Mexico and then Japan. The Safari Snack House at 5121 Canada Way is Shairose ShamjiKarmali’s baby and she makes some of the best authentic East African food anywhere. For more info, call 604-515-9211. If Indian food is more your flavour, check out Burnaby’s Agra Tandoori. Their butter chicken is a favourite among online foodies. Located at 110-3790 Canaday Way, Agra Tandoori is open everyday for both lunch and dinner. Call 604-430-1600 for more info. Finding good Asian food isn’t difficult in Burnaby, but for our money, one of the best is Take Sushi Japanese Restaurant at 4528 East Hastings St. in the Heights. Owner and chef Jason Zhang has a unique menu that focuses on freshness, affordability and new flavours. For more info, call 604-291-7241.

Dining with a

Even if you don’t have time to sit, you can still have a great meal in Burnaby. These three spots offer great food that you can take with you. The Ice Cream Parlour at Burnaby Village Museum at 6501 Deer Lake Ave. is one of the best-kept secrets in the city. You can get everything from butter chicken to fish and chips to go. And don’t forget some ice cream as well. There’s no more iconic takeout food than pizza and Burnaby has its fair share of great pizza joints. Two favourites are Stan’s Pizza Joint at 4527 Hastings St. where business partners Judith Gauge and Stan Reid offer up delicious pizza at great prices. Call 604-2985711 for more info. In South Burnaby, Me-nEds Pizza at 7110 Hall Ave. has been an institution and no less an authority than Michael J. Fox considers it the best pizza in the city. Call 604-521-8881 for more info.

Burnaby is one of the most picturesque cities in the Lower Mainland, so it’s no surprise that several local restaurants have some of the best views. Here’s our choices for the best places to get a great meal and a great view at the same time. Horizons Restaurant at Burnaby Mountain has been around for more than two decades and with great food and stunning mountain views, it’s easy to see why. Horizons at 100 Centennial Way is truly fine dining with a view. For reservations or info, call 604-2991155 or go to www.horizonsrestaurant.com. Two underrated fine dining restaurants with a view are the ebo Restaurant and Lounge in the Delta Burnaby Hotel, which offers a great view of the North Shore mountains, and Reflect Social Dining and Lounge at the Hilton Vancouver Metrotown, which has a patio that offers great views of South Burnaby. ebo is located at 4331 Dominion St. Call 604-453-0788 or go to www.eborestaurant.com for more info.
