Riverway Golf Course One of Burnaby’s premier golf courses, this 18-hole course is nestled into Burnaby’s Riverside neighbourhood. The Heights is one of three hills – Capitol Hill and Burnaby Mountain are the others, each successively higher as you go east – that face Burrard Inlet. Thousands of immigrants came to the area with the opening of Hastings Street in 1902 and the arrival of the streetcar in North Burnaby in 1908. With population growth, the first merchants soon appeared. Many Italians called the Heights home, joining the English and Irish immigrants who had come before. Formed as an official business improvement area in 1994, the Heights Merchants Association focuses on issues affecting the area. Many of the stores in the Heights are owned by second and third generation merchants. This is balanced by a wide range of newer stores and services, some run by new immigrants from diverse cultures. The history of Burnaby goes back more than 100 years to 1892, and the Edmonds neighbourhood was at the heart of that history because the city’s first municipal hall was located at the corner of Kingsway and Edmonds.
