Expectations (of Libraries) Predictions that our rapidly-changing technological age would render libraries obsolete were simply wrong.

Books are still the backbone of a modern library, and libraries are still at the core of a university campus.

But the metamorphosis libraries are experiencing makes them almost unrecognizable from those of the last century.

Of importance is the emerging role of the library as a multi-function facility.

Great collections of information and data aren’t worth much unless they can be transformed into accessible, understandable, and useful forms.

from the Farm: Risks and Rewards President Emeritus J.D. Victor Fitch recalls early experiences as a farm boy, remembering the anxious days from ground preparation to harvest when any number of circumstances could make the difference between a good year or one with crop failures.

President Fitch says these early experiences build confidence when it comes to the commitment that’s necessary for a university’s growth and development. To be successful in worthwhile endeavors, he opines, means both realizing the rewards and accepting the risks.

To the many friends and alumni whose spirit of generosity is ensuring our continued success in achieving our mission, we are grateful beyond words.

“Shaping the World” Campaign Update

For decades, students, faculty, administrators, and the Board of Trustees have discussed the inadequacies of Burman’s library in supporting the excellence we expect of ourselves.

So when we launched the Shaping the World campaign, the library became its signature piece. Now, thanks to so many sharing our commitment to excellence, we are ready to begin the work.

Initially, we thought that renovation and expansion of the existing building would be most cost effective. Then, unexpectedly, we discovered that new construction would approximate the cost of renovation. This library will provide students and faculty with the tools and space to pursue excellence. You will read more about plans for our new building in this issue.

Further goals of the Shaping the World campaign are to address other core values: to enhance the university’s ability to inspire service, deepen spirituality, and promote integrity and community.

To these ends, we determined to raise an additional $5 million.

In addition to the library, these goals have also received generous support, as you will see in the financial report on page 3. On behalf of Burman’s students, staff, and faculty, thank you!

While we continue to work on achieving our target goal for the Shaping the World campaign, our attention is also focused on maintaining financial viability and adjusting programs to anticipate the competencies required in our changing world.

•F irst, we are in the process of redesigning curriculum requirements. Our goal is to provide students with the knowledge, skills, and attributes needed for success in their current studies, and also to give them an advantage when seeking employment or graduate school admission.

• S econd, we are reimagining co-curricular activities—those that enable spiritual development, social interaction, and health and wellness. The emphasis will be on developing life skills and attitudes, such as leadership and service, that are beneficial beyond university.

• Th ird, we are reviewing entire academic programs to help Burman fulfill its vision of being the school of choice for those seeking a quality Christian education. While these three “pivots” are still being developed, we envision some initial elements to be implemented in the fall semester.

Our mission, to educate students to “think with discernment, believe with insight and commitment, and to act with confidence, compassion, and competence,” is evident in the lives of many who are serving with distinction throughout the world. Your generosity is giving many more that opportunity.

We currently make available $1.4 million in entrance scholarships. This amount plays a vital role for many, but we are called to do even more for those who face economic hardships and also for academically gifted students.

Service — a core value We encourage students to be keenly involved in service and mission, not only while they attend the university, but also in their careers.

The majority of the student body participates in volunteer projects, but we want to ensure that students are even better prepared to act with compassion and commitment. Looking to the Future: A New Library

BU Reserve Fund Loan $1.2 Million

After many years of planning, Burman University will finally have a library that will meet student and faculty needs. Many have prayed and worked hard for this moment in the university’s development.

Cash on Hand $3.5 Million

The new library will be a game changer for the entire campus. With spaces for more than 300 patrons at any one time, the library will be much more than a repository for books. In fact, there will be 68 percent more study space than book stacks. The new facility is certain to become the campus hub.

Strong financial support has made it possible to break ground this spring. The construction goal of $4.7 million has been met (Figure 1). A total goal of $6 million includes funds for technology, furnishings, landscaping, and paving (Figure 1, page 3).

Partnering f_or success | Thoughts from Lead Donors •Gail Misek•

For many years, I yearned to attend a Christian school, but couldn’t. Now that God has given me the opportunity to assist a Christian university with preparing young lives for service, I feel God-led. I feel His peace.

I have been committed to helping students follow their dreams, aspirations, and calling throughout my career. Books brought the world to my elementary school children. They learned a greater understanding of and compassion for those different from themselves—qualities basic to the peace and justice that are so scarce in today’s world. Burman University is a “united nations microcosm” where students and faculty from many different countries study and work together. The new library will serve professors and students in their quest for learning, connecting, and belonging.

•Murray and Elaine (Babiuk) Sankey• When we met at Burman, we

discovered that we had much in common. Both “prairie kids,” we partnered with Murray’s parents after graduating and grew Little Gem Ranches Ltd near Veteran, AB, where we still live.

Burman is a place that nurtures leadership and relationship building—with each other, the community, and our heavenly Father. We are excited to help foster the growth and development of an institution that we hold in high regard. We are especially pleased with the opportunity to recognize the Fitch family’s many contributions by naming the upper commons in the library the ‘Fitch Commons.’

•Mark Johnson• For more than a century, Burman University has served the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Canada and around the world. More than 400 Burman alumni dedicated their lives to foreign missions in more than 100 countries. More than 300 student missionaries travelled around the globe to share God’s love with others. Burman’s legacy is remarkable!

Of all our current pastors in Canada, 114 were trained in Burman’s classrooms, as were 39 of our support staff and administrators. And 172 teachers (47 percent of the workforce in our schools) are Burman alumni. As President of the Church in Canada, I am grateful to this university. Thanks to Burman, the church is stronger and more vibrant. We applaud its vision for excellence in service.

•Marcia (BeLL) and Kelvin HiLL• We came from Nova Scotia and Alberta to Burman and wouldn’t have met had it not been for this school. Our time on the hilltop provided us with many good experiences. Professors with remarkable patience helped us succeed academically. We also developed friendships that are still valued today.

For 21 years we lived in the United States. The people were lovely, and the opportunities numerous; but we never felt quite at home, leading us to return to Canada. Now, the importance of a Canadian university for Canadian students is obvious to us. Supporting the new library provides ways to thank Burman for contributing richly to our lives and gives an opportunity to honour our loved ones.

I

n the 1960s and 70s, when Keith Clouten was library director at Avondale College in Australia, a library was defined as a building. Its value depended on a well-selected and extensive book collection, good cataloging, and accurate classification.

2. L ibraries are in the business of knowledge creation. In the university, librarians empower and mentor learners in information seeking—the foundational step in creating knowledge.

From 1979 to 1993, Keith directed the library at Canadian Union College (now Burman University). Such was his reputation as a consummate professional that CUC lost him to Andrews University, Michigan, where Keith served as head librarian from 1993 to 2003.

During those years, a major paradigm shift took place, and the library became more than a building.

Electronic technology, the internet, and digital resources resulted in a publishing explosion. A library’s value now depended on access to the internet, connection speed, choice of digital and print resources, access to databases through networking, and instruction in what was called “information literacy.”

It is clear to anyone looking that this current decade is presenting another paradigm shift—one that is attributable to knowledge increasing in an ever-accelerating rate. Prior to the 20th century, knowledge doubled once every century. In 1945, it was thought to double every 25 years. This changed to every 12 to 13 months by 1982. This past decade, IBM predicted it would double every 8 to 12 hours by 2020!

Changing Expectations

in the span of One Librarian’s career Keith Clouton

Marc Rosenberg, nationally renowned consultant, author, and speaker, describes this accelerating pace as creating a tsunami. He writes, “When knowledge is doubling exponentially, yet the useful lifespan of that knowledge is decreasing significantly, the result is a knowledge tsunami—a seemingly unstoppable wave of new information pushing you forward, combined with an extremely forceful undertow of information that used to be valuable but is now just knowledge clutter, pulling you back.”

Clouten, who after retirement volunteered his library consulting services in Africa, Asia, and Central and South America, asks, “How shall we value the future Burman University library?”

He points out that a library, while still maintaining the print resources that are at its core, must now be the communication hub that connects individual learners with the shared knowledge of many voices for three important reasons:

Postmodernism supports a philosophy that speaks to individual authority in determining truth and values. An Adventist institution of learning is tasked with teaching shared truth and values. This, Clouten points out, includes the pursuit of eternal truth, ethical behaviors, and purposeful living. And therein lies the ultimate value of a library that has the range of tools to support this quest.

About the Photo Accessibility was a key element informing the design of the new library building. But accessibility goes far beyond ease of movement and utilization of the library’s physical and technological resources.

It also encompasses the concept of access to one another’s ideas in spaces designed to promote intellectual exchange and exploration.

Access to guidance in discovering and determining the relevance of enormous amounts of available information was fundamental to the plan.

ack in 1998, I wrote an article for Canadian Campus, Canadian Union College’s alumni magazine. I asked, why are libraries still needed? With the advent of the internet in the 90s, people predicted that actual library buildings would be outdated. Without the need to store vast collections of print books, students could find anything they needed independently on their laptops. “Not so fast,” I cautioned. Tongue in cheek, I titled the article “Libraries Without Walls.”

Changing Expectations

The Role of the 21st Century University Library

earlier times) scrolls and clay tables. Information still needs to be collected, organized, and made available to learners. In our current information age, students need to learn how to acquire and practice information literacy.

Now, more than two decades later, I am writing another article in eager anticipation of a new 21st century library at Burman University. Yes, it has walls. And a roof, too!

Today’s information age requires a “savvy-ness” in finding and identifying, evaluating and using reliable, relevant information. One 2020 study focused on CEOs of small and midsized enterprises.

Those who were skilled in information literacy were positively influencing their companys’ innovations.

Where can students learn to discern reputable sources in the sea of misinformation if not in the library? Who will teach them how to find the scholarly resources their professors require in their coursework? Where will they gain the information competencies—the skills in knowing when information is needed, finding it quickly, evaluating its reliability, and using it ethically and responsibly—if not in the library?

The new library will have a classroom dedicated to integrating information proficiency with students’ coursework so that learners will be prepared for success in the workplace and graduate school.

A student summarized his hopes for a new library when he told us that he wants the library to be a place where he feels welcome, where he goes to study because he wants to, not because he needs to.

What the forecasters hadn’t anticipated was the importance of the library as place. Visits to libraries in Canada have actually increased as new library construction continued across the country with Norquest College, Mount Royal University, and the Calgary Public Library being the most recently completed major libraries in Alberta.

Several years ago, I came across a question that has guided my plans for a library ever since: “What if we could create environments that generate a sense of joyfulness and intellectual purpose?” The new library will do just that!

I

grew up on a farm. So I helped, as every farm kid did, from a very young age.

Until Dad bought a John Deere tractor in 1947, I plowed with five horses—three at the back and two at the front. I also cut grain with an 8-foot binder and the horses.

When I was 12, I helped with community threshing. My uncle had a threshing machine and tractor and did custom work for six (as I recall) neighbourhood farmers. They provided the racks and teams. To prevent total loss from a potential early snowfall for any one of his customers, he rotated among the farms, threshing a portion of their crops at a time.

My Dad didn’t like this arrangement, so he bought his own threshing machine. Since he had a tractor, we did our own work with just two teams. It was slower, but at least what was threshed was ours, not somebody else’s. Then we moved into combining.

Farming has changed and will continue to do so. If the farmer does not change and update, he will not remain competitive and in business.

Farmers are the biggest gamblers on earth. They have absolutely no control over the price of the things farming requires: equipment, seed, fertilizer, fuel, spray, and more. And they certainly have no control over the price they can command for their product. So what should a farmer do if he has a combine that is 10 years old, often breaks down, is smaller than what he really needs when a good crop is expected, and wastes 10 percent of the grain that goes out with the chaff and straw? Should he buy a new one? The old one is really no longer adequate, and harvesting the product to sell is absolutely essential to making a living.

While attending high school and college on the hilltop, the foundations were being laid for a 51-year-long career that included serving the Church in Canada as dean of men, teacher, local conference and union educational superintendent, and college president.

Nor does a farmer know if he will hail out next year. Maybe it will be a dry summer and hence a poor crop. Should he still buy new equipment, given these uncertainties?

Even though farming is drastically different from when I farmed, I say, yes! One must assume risk to be successful.

I propose that what a combine is to a grain farmer, a library is to a university. Burman University’s current library is 70 years old. It was built as a cafeteria and modified to become a library. But it is no longer meeting student needs or expectations. For one thing, it is not a welcoming place—a place where students choose to be.

When I think of what students lose from not having a welcoming place to gather, I recall my family gathering around the farm table every morning after my brother and I milked cows. We talked about the day’s activities and discussed anything else that was on our minds. We each felt a sense of belonging and close connection.

Today many families rarely eat together. Often food is ordered in from the internet where one can get every type of cuisine in the world—anything and everything desired, meeting all dietary needs and restrictions—but it is often eaten alone. Gone is the valuable opportunity of learning from others, the privilege of forming connections, and the ability to build a sense of belonging. We still build houses with kitchens, and we still build academic libraries—but neither kitchens nor libraries are what they used to be.

Building a library means taking risks. But why take a risk now? Especially in this time of a global pandemic. We don’t know what next year or beyond will bring. Will we be able to build enrolment even with a new library that meets the expectations of students and professors? On the other hand, by maintaining the status quo, how can we continue to prepare students for service in today’s changing world? How can we remain relevant and competitive?

I firmly believe that, like the farmer, Burman must continue to do what needs to be done to remain in business. But unlike the farmer, who has no control over weather or markets, Burman has ways of growing enrollment. And while a farmer may need to assume debt, Burman can now, thanks to the university’s many supportive friends and alumni, build without being indebted to a lending institution. True, the university itself is putting up bridge financing of $1.2 million from a reserve fund. But what farmer would hesitate to commit under those circumstances?

A new facility, I am certain, will become the very hub of student activity on campus. As my family had around the kitchen table, our students will have a place to learn, to foster a sense of belonging, and to connect with others. If we do not boldly move forward in faith, we will move dangerously backward.

I am personally fully committed to doing all I can to provide the very best opportunities for the success of each student who chooses Burman. Providing a wellequipped, inviting library that meets the varied needs of students is critical to that goal.

A library is no longer a place where you just keep silent with a book under your nose or a mouse in your hand. It has to have places for collaborative learning activities in addition to quiet spaces. It has to have classrooms to teach information literacy and “makerspaces” for hands-on learning.

Naming Opportunities

A plaque on the Wall of Gratitude (see examples on page 4) will commemorate that special person. There are also many opportunities to name specific areas of the library such as group study rooms, the information commons, and other spaces as depicted in the diagrams below.

Who has shaped the trajectory of your life? Has anyone had a major impact on your faith? Your career? Your financial or physical well-being? Who (and where) would you be today had it not been for those who believed in you, encouraged you, and gave you confidence?

How would you like to participate? Do you prefer making a one-time gift of cash or a pledge to be redeemed over the next couple of years? Or are you in a position to donate gifts of stock and securities and avoid paying tax on the capital gain?

Another option you may want to consider is a gift-in-kind such as building materials or a saleable property.

You may have searched for ways to thank that family member, friend, teacher, coach, or pastor. Something to honour them and, at the same time, ”pay it forward” for others to have the chance to succeed. The new Burman University library offers opportunities that will do both.

lmost one year into the pandemic, the Church in the Valley (CIV), a Seventh-day Adventist church in Langley, British Columbia, sits empty.

But the pastoral staff (four of whom are Burman University graduates) say that the congregation’s faith and determination couldn’t be stronger.

When asked if the church is looking forward to getting back to normal, David Jamieson, the lead pastor, says that he doesn’t use the phrase. He believes in embracing a new normal: “Even though we are in the middle of a pandemic, we are encouraging our staff and congregation to embrace the numerous opportunities in front of us daily to do church differently.”

“Differently” means live streaming worship services. The “Church at Home” worship experience, Pastor Walter Rogers’ “KidsZone” program, multiple Bible study groups, a virtual communion service, even a Christmas baking show that Pastor Ben Amoah organized— all have connected the growing congregation with God and each other.

“Differently” also means that when COVID-19 restrictions eased last October, and the church opened its doors for about six weeks, the pastors provided five separate in-person “worship service bubbles,” each for 50 people or fewer every week. They also continued to livestream services for those who felt more comfortable worshiping from home.

What “differently” does not mean is shelving the church’s determination to make an impact on people’s lives. When CIV opened its doors on September 12, 2015 after eight years of praying, planning, and building, its mission was clearly visible in the facilities themselves.

The auditorium, seating 875, was far larger than what the congregation needed. In addition, the church also has a chapel, a commercial kitchen, classrooms, an atrium, a climbing wall, a fitness centre, and a sports court—all serving CIV’s commitment to spiritual, emotional, physical, and intellectual health. Perhaps most unusual is the well-appointed Acts of Kindness (AOK) 12 | Burman University Magazine

Centre that includes a guest suite and a three-bay automotive garage.

Even during the pandemic, the AOK Centre, coordinated by Pastor Anderline Bredy, continues to serve the community by providing essential services to those in need in the Township of Langley.

Recently, AOK gifted its 75th vehicle to a single mom through the “AOK Cars for Moms” program. The Extreme Home Repair team completed a COVID-19 socially distanced mini home renovation.

Each week the “AOK Kindness Hub” and “AOK Nightshift” provide food, clothing, and the basic necessities of life to more than 300 individuals in need. The centre is also used by Canadian Blood Services for a monthly blood drive.

Much media attention is currently focused on churches defying public health orders and holding in-person worship. With great intentionality, Jamieson is modeling a different attitude. He explains, “Our congregation understands that we are facing a public health issue that impacts everyone in our

community. We are just one of the many community organizations and businesses affected. Our prayer is that soon our community organizations and businesses will begin to thrive again, and that soon we can worship together once again.”

Jamieson says, “What we’ve learned throughout this pandemic is that the church is truly not a building. The church is its people.”

The Township of Langley is part of Metro Vancouver, in an area known as the Lower Mainland. Bordered on the north by the Fraser River and on the south by the United States/ Canada border, the municipality is home to well over 100,000 people.

Update: World’s Longest Games Playing for a Future Free of Cancer

Editor’s note: Our fall 2019 issue told the story of alumna Jenelle Trenchuk-Saik, Brent Saik, and their volunteers raising funds for cancer research with the Saiks’ World’s Longest Game series.

That fall, their 85-hour-long baseball game raised $460,000.

ince 2003, the World’s Longest Games (hockey and baseball) have raised more than $7.34 million for leading-edge equipment and research at the University of Alberta Cross Cancer Institute in Edmonton. This year in February, 40 players gathered for the 7th edition of the World’s Longest Hockey Game. They raised $1.84 million with a game that lasted 252 hours!

Dr. Jeffrey expects that additional certificate programs, currently in various stages of development, will be ready for the 2022 fall term. These will appeal to practicing professionals, as well as to undergraduate students wishing to add new competencies to their degree programs. The programs will also serve those not planning on obtaining full university degrees.

Service During a Pandemic Burman University’s annual “Serve Lacombe Day” was in danger of being cancelled last fall. Massiel Dávila-Ferrer, university chaplain, recalls, “We wondered how we could make a service day happen during a global pandemic. It couldn’t resemble anything we had done in the past.

But then we decided that there must still be some opportunities left for us to serve our community. Even a pandemic shouldn’t stop us.”

Cleaning grave headstones was among a variety of choices that accommodated COVID restrictions including social distancing.

Massiel was joined by outreach director Tacey Iradukunda and former chaplain Adam Deibert to craft a plan that kept the projects uncomplicated.

The activities they organized were done outside, so students could wear masks and be socially distanced.

Would Lacombe residents be welcoming or wary? And would the weather cooperate? As it turned out, the morning of September 17 was bright and sunny. By the time volunteers gathered at noon for a socially distanced and safely served outdoor pizza lunch, the thermometer registered a balmy 20°C. Every spot for the planned service activities was filled. Each of the 70 participants was excited and ready to start work. And any fears about their reception by the people of Lacombe had been laid to rest.

Burman volunteers picked up garbage around Lacombe and along the highway. Some helped out at the food bank. Others helped the City of Lacombe with a gravestone restoration project—an unexpectedly popular choice. Even a neighbor working in his yard benefitted when eager students who were cleaning up litter nearby came to assist him.

When Massiel made her rounds to the various projects, she stopped to chat with Maureen MacKenzie, Lacombe’s executive assistant for the city’s community services. Ms. MacKenzie expressed her delight at the many willing volunteers that came to serve. She told Massiel, “You’ve got some amazing students.

I’d love to work with them again.” Massiel couldn’t suppress her smile as she beamed back, “We would love that, too.”

Staff of the Year Award President Agrey presented the Staff of the Year award to Ron Reimche at last fall’s opening convocation. Mr. Reimche, Director of Security and Transportation, was nominated by his peers for his commitment and dedication. As co-chair of the Health and Safety Committee in developing a comprehensive planning process to ensure a safe campus, Ron worked many extra hours. His untiring effort is appreciated by the entire Burman community.

Even so, they didn’t know what to expect.

Hugh Roach: A Life Well Lived A friend remembered, by J.D. Victor Fitch

Hugh Roach, one of the fellows in my dorm, was a Christian gentleman and a scholar. He loved life. Running was one of his passions. I often saw him sprint down College Avenue, no matter what the weather. Deeply involved in college life, he held many student offices, including that of president of his graduating class—the college class of 1959.

Returning to The Bahamas with a degree in theology, Hugh began his service to the church as an education leader, religious leader, and administrator par excellence. During his tenure as president of the SDA Church in The Bahamas, including the Turks and Caicos Mission, Pastor Roach is credited with establishing The Grand Bahama Academy in Freeport. Also under his administration, the Bahamas Academy in Nassau became an accredited institution. Along the way, he pastored multiple churches for over fifty years.

Hugh was elevated to the post of Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire. This honour from the queen was bestowed on May 22, 2004, at Government House. Toward the end of his life, his country publicly recognized his dedication to God and country with an appointment to Chaplain of the House of Assembly, a position he held from 2012 to 2017.

 in recognition of service to country in the Commonwealth of the Bahamas

Hugh and Olga, his wife of 59 years, returned to campus in 2009 for his 50th Homecoming celebration, and again in 2019 for his 60th. A strong supporter of Burman, he encouraged students to attend his alma mater. In recent years, more than 10 Bahamians braved Alberta winters to pursue their education at Burman.

On September 3, 2020, Hugh was laid to rest in Jesus, but his influence will continue to live on in the lives of many.

Victor Fitch, President Emeritus, was men’s residence hall dean at CUC (now Burman) 1957-1961, 1963-1964.

Symphonia, an Interdisciplinary Conference to Explore and Express Greek Scripture through Music

At 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 27, Symphonia will demonstrate—through a process of exegesis, analysis, and musical composition—how the meaning of original texts in Koine Greek can be amplified and powerfully expressed. Stephen Reasor, chair of the religious studies program, is partnering with Wendy Markosky and Eduardo Solá, both faculty in the music program, to organize student teams from the two programs. They will present a wide range of texts with multiple approaches. Some participants are composing original scripture songs; others are analyzing extant music settings of scriptural texts by other composers. Music, a Tool for Teaching Values Solá Chagas Lima, Eduardo. (2020). "Life and Death of Music as Education: A Philosophical Overview.” Journal of Research in Christian Education (JRCE), Routledge/Taylor & Francis, Vol. 29, No. 2.

In a recently published paper, Eduardo Solá, assistant professor of music, examines the centrality of music education in Christian pedagogy. He asks, “Do Christian denominations utilize music as a potential educational tool to teach and impart extra-musical skills, knowledge, and competencies?”

First, Solá presents a philosophical overview of the development of music as education (as opposed to music education) in Western society, from ancient Greece to the present time. Next, he acknowledges the elusiveness of references to music in the Bible (due to its diachronic meanings) and turns to more recent contributions that have influenced Seventh-day Adventist (SDA) understanding. He cites SDA writers such as Ellen White, George Knight, and others to demonstrate that their views of music as a tool have shaped current perceptions among Adventist musicians and laypeople alike.

ssistant Professor Eduardo Solá writes: “My students and I recently presented a concert at College Heights SDA Church with the Burman University Chamber Ensemble (a substitute for our regular orchestra throughout the pandemic). It was titled "An Age of Enlightenment.” We performed mid-eighteenth-century music in period attire,

in candlelight, and on original instruments. It was quite a success not only with the small audience allowed at the time, but also with many ‘attendees’ online through the livestream.”

Burman Alumni Continue Studies at Top Canadian Graduate Universities One graduation requirement of the international studies program is a “capstone” project after students successfully complete their internships. That combination, added to the advantages of Burman’s low student-teacher ratio, gives candidates a competitive edge when applying for admission to graduate schools.

Faculty—and Student—Publications When Adam Kiŝ, associate professor of anthropology, invites his undergraduate students, such as Cheyanne Welch (see citation below), to assist him with his research, he is “paying it forward.” He explains, “When my own undergraduate professors invited me to assist with their research, I gained experience and confidence. My résumé looked good when I applied for graduate school admission, and I developed an enthusiasm for sharing my discoveries with others.”

Beverly Alfred, a 2019 graduate from Burman, completed an internship at the Canadian Embassy in Washington, D.C. Upon her return to Burman, she wrote a capstone project on “Economic Development in Haiti.” Beverly is now a Master’s student in global governance and international affairs at the University of Ottawa. She works as a junior policy analyst in Global Affairs Canada, the department that manages Canada’s diplomatic and consular relations.

Kiŝ’s recent publication, “We Are Poor, but We Are Developed,” analyzes perceptions that various stakeholders in the international development world have on the meaning of the word “development.”

Spencer Page, who graduated from the international studies program in 2020, wrote a capstone project titled “The Carbon Footprint of Global Value Chains.” He was accepted into a Master of Arts degree in Global Governance at the Balsillie School of International Affairs. Balsillie is a collaborative partnership between the University of Waterloo, Laurier University, and a think tank, the Centre for International Governance Innovation.

Anecdotal evidence in the Philippines suggested that Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA) employees, government liaisons, and their beneficiaries too often didn’t see things the same way. Research found language to be the culprit: the word “development” meant well-paved roads, reliable electricity, well-educated citizenry, etc., to ADRA employees. Beneficiaries, on the other hand, envisioned more localized concerns such as community togetherness, happiness, and rudimentarily simple (to the Western mindset) possessions such as cell phones and basic furniture.

Elisa Vital Jimenez, also a 2020 graduate, completed an internship at the William J. Perry Center for Hemispheric Defense Studies in Washington, D.C. Her capstone project was on “Reduction in Female Circumcision and Increase in Retention of Girls in School Among the Maasai.” Elisa is now completing a Master of Arts degree in Public and International Affairs at the University of Ottawa.

Both groups used the same word: development. But because their meanings did not match, their goals differed.

The result was inevitable misunderstanding and even conflict. The solution, simple yet profound, was that ADRA and the community dialogue more to ensure that their expectations match, rather than assume that the same word holds identical meaning for everyone.

Dr. Marc Froese, chair, writes, “I really enjoyed writing ‘The Doctrine’ because it is not my usual work on the politics of economic law. Rather, it’s a big think piece arguing for the multicultural origins of international economic law.”

Geo-national competition, often driven by populist and nativist posturing, is creating increasingly unstable conditions in our world.

“The Doctrine of Universal Economy and the Regulation of International Trade” provides a history lesson that goes back at least 1,700 years to Greco-Roman ideas and traces the cosmopolitan origin of what has been termed “universal economy” as it informed thought and practice throughout Europe’s medieval period, into colonial times, and from the 20th Century to the present.

Becoming Alberta’s Best Psychology Program

Although a strong job market exists for well-qualified psychology graduates at all levels, preparing students to compete against job-seekers with degrees from “name” universities can be a challenging proposition. This is especially so for a small institution like Burman. But that has not deterred Burman’s new psychology chair, Dr. Darren George, from his belief that it is not only possible to be competitive, but for the Burman program to be recognized as superior.

Positioning to Be Best in Alberta The psychology faculty have a developed a plan, says Dr. George, that will guide Burman’s psychology program toward being “The Best.” He admits that this goal may sound grandiose, given the competition with the universities of Alberta, Calgary, and Lethbridge, not to mention an array of other Alberta universities—all larger and well-funded. But as a consummate researcher, he explains, “Every ‘operational definition’ is based on specific criteria.” Then he proceeds to enumerate those:

Burman will be best in Alberta in mentoring its psychology majors.

Plans are to meet personally with all psychology majors once each semester to guide them in discovering, developing, and refining their professional goals, and to recommend the classes and experiences best suited for accomplishing their objectives.

Froese points out that the Doctrine of Universal Economy was grounded in the value of universal human interconnectedness, the belief that Marc Froese trade is beneficial, the obvious fact that resources are unequally distributed, and the conviction that both interconnectedness and inequality of resources form a pattern designed to promote peaceful cooperation.

In conclusion, Froese posits that “the trade/peace hypothesis continues to animate the biggest question in trade policy today: what [is the proper] role for trade in the development of peaceful global relations?”

Burman will be best in Alberta in terms of job placement of its graduates.

Research indicates that over the past two decades, about 80 percent of psychology graduates entered the job market following a four-year degree.

Burman will ensure that its students fit those criteria. George writes, “The percentage of job placements is then simple arithmetic.”

The three components associated with “best” in this instance are as follows:  Of graduate school bound students, a higher percentage will graduate with a professional, peerreviewed publication than those from any other Alberta university. Dr. George has already published with 26 psychology majors over the years. He plans to “up the game.” Just last month, senior psychology major Kira Bruggemann became the 26th with the publication of an article dealing with the impact of COVID on higher education, published in the International Journal of Educational Research. O f graduate school bound students, Burman will have the highest acceptance rate to graduate schools of any other Alberta university. How this is accomplished is explained in the next component.

physiological psychology, experimental and psychometric methods, and related courses.

The New Team—Looking Ahead Assuming the chairmanship from Dr. Connors is Dr. Darren George (UCLA). New to the program is Dr. Dadria Lewis (University of Florida), a full-time tenure-track faculty member. Dr. Carole Anderson (Andrews University, MI) continues in her former role. Dr. Daniel Saugh (Wilfred Laurier University, Ontario) is teaching courses in methods and more.

The faculty’s commitment to quality is not the only factor that should encourage prospective enrollees. The Canadian government’s analysis of job availability through the next decade predicts that employment opportunities in the psychology field will far exceed the available candidates. It is reasonable to think that the same situation will exist for our neighbour to the south.

 A “High Achievers Group” will be created. Faculty are still working out details. It is envisioned that this group will meet weekly during their entire four years at Burman. During these meetings faculty will give them pointers on how to score high on the Graduate Record Exam (GRE) and perform at maximum levels in their classes. The group will learn how to contact and interact with faculty members and researchers from top universities, develop their own research agendas, and create résumés and applications that set them apart from others. Burman will invite guest speakers representing universities from across Canada to present. The result, George anticipates, will be that these guest speakers will leave saying, “I want some of those students at my university!”

Recruitment Plans Once their action plan is operational, an enthusiastic faculty envisions aggressively recruiting not only from Adventist schools in Canada and the United States, but also from area high schools such as Lacombe Composite, Lindsey Thurber, Hunting Hills, Notre Dame, and St. Joseph.

Starting Strong Fortunately, the present faculty is able to build on an exceptionally strong foundation. Among their predecessors are long-time faculty members John Connors and Peter Wass, both recently retired. For most of Connors’ 32 years at Burman, he served as department chair. Wass’ nearly 20 years were marked by exceptional teaching in the areas of

Regular service at Burman University’s Physical Education Centre was interrupted last year in mid-March when its doors closed in response to the pandemic.

Service with a Difference In mid-June, services resumed in strict compliance with government regulation. Ron Schafer, associate professor of physical education, explains, “We functioned with widely-spaced equipment, enhanced cleaning procedures, and the cohort system for basketball, soccer, volleyball, and pickleball games. Our Acronaires could also practice, and Craig Gerst was able to teach some of his university swimming classes fall semester. We encouraged everyone to live a lifestyle that would enhance their immune systems. These precautions kept all participants healthy.”

The centre closed its doors for a second time around mid-December— again due to government restrictions. It is still closed, except to the three massage therapists that operate out of the centre. They were permitted to resume massages in mid-January.

Despite the centre’s closures, physical activities have continued on campus.

The outdoor rink has seen more use this year than in other recent years.

(Unfortunately, the rink shack remained closed, so skaters did not have a warm place to put on their skates or rest.) The centre’s parking lot has also seen lots of activity by people walking or skiing the tracks around Lake Elizabeth or Lake Barnett. And Casey’s Cabin has become a counseling suite for the professional who usually works out of the Physical Education Centre.

The centre’s staff is offering continuing services to its members by offering various pieces of fitness equipment for home use at no charge so they can remain active during the closures. All memberships are “on hold” until the centre reopens. In the meantime, staff have repaired equipment and upgraded, painted, renovated, and deep-cleaned the facility in preparation for reopening. At Christmas, the pool was drained and repaired.

Ron reports, “Almost every day people stop me in the stores or on the street to say how they miss using the facility. We also get many inquiries from seniors who miss their free exercise classes.”

Burman’s Physical Education Centre’s faculty and staff understand the importance of maintaining physical and mental health. They are planning for the day when normal services need not be interrupted. Until that can happen, they are providing those services that will not compromise the safety of their clients.

Research Informs Practice

Emergency Remote Teaching Survey In response to the unprecedented impact the COVID-19 pandemic is having on education, an interdisciplinary team from Burman University, including a 4th-year psychology student, examined what is commonly known as Emergency Remote Teaching (ERT).

The study’s acute relevance, speed of production, and interdisciplinary connections caught the attention of the International Journal of Educational Research, an influential education journal. Six months from conception, the group’s research was accepted for publication.

Tim Buttler (an assistant professor from the School of Education), Darren George (professor of psychology), and student Kira Bruggemann asked, What factors are influencing the quality of education and level of student success? Their questionnaire, sent out to 400 randomly selected Burman students last spring after Burman transitioned to ERT, collected information on professor performance, quality of learning, and expectations of fair evaluations—all viewed to affect the likelihood of students returning to Burman University that fall.

1. Support Adequate support for assignments, notes, quizzes, etc. Timely feedback and consistent communication are high on the list.

2. Evidence Clear evidence that professors (and the university) care about students during a pandemic that is often leaving them frightened and insecure.

3. Involvement Involvement in the evaluation process.

Students expect to collaborate in the creation of their final-exam format. (This finding was unexpected and points to a clear difference in perceptions.)

4. Relaxed schedule Allowing more time. In an online setting, students are often trying to fit their academics into a work schedule.

5. Simple logistics Clear Learning Management System.

Professors and university administration should bend over backward to ensure that the system is straightforward; that students understand how to use it; and that assignments, quizzes, and exams are easily accessed and processed.

Last summer, before the 2020/2021 academic year began, Burman University’s professional development programs for professors and staff addressed these responses. They were taken into account in the development of technical support, curriculum considerations, course outlines, time allocations, and more.

Tim Buttler points out that future studies are needed to explore “how student input and the final exam format are predictive of quality learning and student satisfaction in an online context.”

New Members Assist Students with Academic and Professional Preparedness

The School of Business Advisory Board offers advice and guidance, assists with securing student internships, generates opportunities for research, and more. Its members are leaders in the Central Alberta business community and the academic world. Two new representatives recently joined the board.

Dr. Robert Opoku is the lead marketing instructor at the Donald School of Business, Red Deer College. He is also the owner and lead consultant at Fredma Business Services Inc., an Albertabased strategy consulting, training, and research group. His academic pursuit and working career have resulted in the privilege of consulting, teaching, and developing management and marketing-related courses on four continents: Africa, Asia, Europe, and North America.

Mr. Peter DeWit is a serial entrepreneur and businessman with over 25 years of experience in marketing and small business management. He has taught business and marketing courses at the Donald School of Business and Burman University. Currently, he is the senior account manager and owner of EDGE Marketing and Design Inc. in Lacombe.

Business Curriculum Prepares Alumni for Career Success

Professor Louicius Michel, chair, announces that two young alumni of the School of Business have successfully written the Common Final Exam for the Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) designation.

Danae Brousson graduated from Burman University with a business degree in 2016. The next year, she completed a master’s at Andrews University. Tutoring and working as a graduate assistant started her on a career path that began with a teaching contract at Burman and rapidly developed into a full-time position as accounting instructor. Most recently, Danae earned a Master’s Degree in Accounting through the University of Alberta, and completed the requirement for her CPA designation.

Breeann Burghardt graduated from the Burman University School of Business with a degree in Business Administration in 2017, majoring in accounting and minoring in art. After graduation, she briefly worked as a Financial Advisor for Scotiabank before deciding to pursue her CPA credentials. Breeann works as a Financial Analyst with the Government of Alberta in the Ministry of Culture, Multiculturalism and Status of Women.

Meet the Board Mary Lou Toop has been a financial executive in Ontario hospitals for 33 years. She worked with empowered staff and the broader leadership groups to create positive and sustainable improvements in both small and large institutions. Over the years, Mrs. Toop provided guidance for various task forces and committees and actively contributed to developing funding formulas and their oversight within the industry.

Mary Lou Toop, CPA, CA Since 2002, Mrs. Toop has shared her financial expertise with the Burman University board in guiding decisions and strategies. She has been part of the prioritization and successful development of financial resiliency. She explains her role, saying, “As a board member I am responsible for being a steward of this institution, ensuring that there are resources to support the faculty as they teach, do research, and pursue ongoing professional development to stay relevant in their field.

“I also believe we must ensure that housing facilities and food services contribute to students’ well-being, that we stay current with technological advances and opportunities, and that the university’s spiritual orientation helps students develop a stronger relationship with Christ.”

Professor Gerald Grant is director of the Centre for Information Technology, Organizations, and People (CITOP) at the Sprott School of Business, Carleton University, Ottawa, Canada. His PhD is from the London School of Economics and Political Science in the United Kingdom.

He began his career at the Ontario Conference of Seventh-day Adventists where he worked first in accounting and then as assistant treasurer. During his six-andone-half-year tenure at Solusi University in Zimbabwe, he served in the areas of both finance and education as assistant professor, chair of the business department, and viceprincipal for finance.

Gerald Grant, PhD Dr. Grant is on the Board of the Adventist Accrediting Association (AAA) of the General Conference of Seventhday Adventists. Since 2011, he has also been a member of the Burman University Board of Trustees. He sees his role on Burman’s board as ensuring effective governance of the university so that it can continue to deliver on its mission and mandate.
