I

t is with a sense of excitement and optimism that I am writing.

Students Back on Campus!

Our campus is teeming with students once gain. The virtual “classrooms” allowed students to keep pace academically. But for knowledge to merge with a mature expression of faith, the Burman Experience calls for face-to-face engagement.

Burman University is committed to whole-person education: not only intellectual, but also emotional, physical, social, and spiritual. Mental health resources such as those offered by the Sakala Student Success Centre are especially important in view of the stress and isolation of many months of pandemic. Additionally, a full range of physical activities on campus invite students to form life-long habits of health and fitness. Social connections also contribute to the Burman Experience. Friends on campus, more often than not, stay friends for life.

Extra-curricular programs and the examples of faculty and staff promote the strong service values cherished and practiced here for decades. I am thrilled that our students will once again be immersed in ways of thinking about what sets Burman apart from campuses without this emphasis.

A New Initiative on Campus Burman University offers myriad opportunities, both in and out of the classroom, for students to think in structured ways about the connections between knowledge, belief, and service.

The second reason for my excitement is the topic of the lead article in this issue—the introduction of the Saruk Centre for Leadership Development. This new initiative brings leadership training opportunities and mentorship to every student who is interested. While this high-quality program is expensive, a group of visionary philanthropists has made it possible for students to participate with no fee.

We all know that well-prepared, ethical leaders can make a significant difference in every situation of life, and we are grateful to the founders of the Centre for their vision and their exceptional commitment. This leadership program is a unique and valuable benefit for students attending Burman University.

Library Completion And finally, I am excited over the prospect of having a new library for our students.

The timeline for completing construction is the end of November. Our goal is to have the library open for students at the beginning of the winter term.

May God continue to bless each of you. Your generous support of Burman has my deepest admiration and appreciation.

Construction of Burman’s new library is on schedule with a dedication planned for the winter semester.

So when it was announced that the new library would offer naming opportunities, some grateful students started a fund in gratitude for Anne and Wilf ’s service. A designated space will be named in their honour.

Darrell Huether, VP for Finance, reports that, as of July 30, donations and pledges on hand (see graph below) are close to reaching the $4.7 million budget allocation for the construction itself. In addition to construction costs, administration has budgeted $1.3 million for furniture, landscaping, paving, and contingencies for a total of $6 million.

Others, too, are choosing to take advantage of naming opportunities. Some are family members such as Glenda Johnson, who is naming the Children’s Book Centre in honour of her parents. Some are groups, like the one naming the library forum for the Fitch family. Yet others are individuals, like Gordon Rick who is establishing a philanthropic legacy.

that has transformed Burman University and the students attending it. One such family is the Wilford C. Tetz family.

In 1952, Wilf and Anne (Krause) Tetz returned to their alma mater after Wilf completed his medical training. For 46 years, Wilf delivered babies, performed surgeries, set bones, stitched up cuts, counseled troubled patients, and did all that was expected of a small town doctor—including 24/7 house calls.

In addition to all that and helping Anne raise their six children, Wilf also volunteered as school physician for many years. Every Sunday morning found Dr. Tetz in West Hall, holding office hours for Hilltop faculty and students. Many can recall the free medical exams for every student at the beginning of each year and the free consultations and treatments whenever needed.

Horst Irrgang recalls getting injured in the college furniture factory. Dr. Tetz, who happened to be on campus, drove Horst to his office in town, stitched up the cut, and drove Horst back to work. Numerous others could cite similar incidences. For decades, Wilf took care of the campus family—all of them.

Of Interest to USA Donors Burman University is pleased to announce that the Internal Revenue Services (IRS) of the United States has approved Burman as a charitable organization. Burman can now issue charitable donation tax receipts directly to its American donors for income tax deductions.

The steps to receive a USA tax receipt are simple. (1)When sending a cheque to Burman University, a donor can request issuance of a USA tax receipt; (2) Burman will send an IRS approved receipt. The same process applies to credit card donations. Stock transfers can be made to the university’s USA bank account and are eligible for tax receipts as well.

By Diane Southcott Early in 2021, our Advancement and Alumni Office staff met with Burman’s Alumni Council to discuss our options for Homecoming 2021. After cancelling Homecoming 2020, no one wanted to cancel yet again. We decided to tackle a virtual event.

We planned, emailed, met by Zoom, and chatted on cell phones to determine just how we could celebrate our alumni— especially those from the graduate honour years 2020 and 2021.

On Friday night, June 4, the Awards and Vespers event provided opportunity to recognize a number of alumni from honour years who have been an inspiration to others. Most responses to

he cofounders of A Better World (ABW), a humanitarian organization that invests in sustainable solutions to breaking the cycle of poverty in developing countries, received one of the highest honours in Canada.

On Sabbath afternoon, President Loren Agrey’s Zoom presentation ended with a participatory question-and-answer session. The Sabbath evening vesper program featured incoming PAA principal Mrs. Holly Kay who shared PAA news and spoke of her passion for Adventist education. Outgoing principal Dallas Weis presented a short devotional talk.

Many alumni and friends who joined in person or on their devices made Homecoming 2021 an event to be remembered.

They made all the planning worthwhile. Nevertheless, we look forward to a face-to-face Homecoming weekend in 2022.

Burman Alumni Awarded Meritorious Service Medal

Graduation Burman University, with both virtual and live-streamed ceremonies, honoured 113 graduates at convocation ceremonies the weekend of April 30 to May 2, 2021. Represented were 13 countries: the Bahamas, Bermuda, Canada, India, Jamaica, Mauritius, Mexico, Peru, the Philippines, Rwanda, South Korea, the United States, and Zimbabwe.

Eric Rajah (U’81) and Brian Leavitt (U’77) of Lacombe, Alberta, were awarded the Meritorious Service Medal (Civil Division) by the Governor General of Canada.

They created A Better World in 1990 as a church program specifically to pay for reconstructive surgery for children victimized by polio in Kenya.

Investing in children is the wisest investment with the greatest return in breaking the cycle of poverty. the awards presented were livestreamed, of course. Only those few who live in the Lacombe area were present to respond in person. But it worked! The evening was a blessing for not only the awardees, but for all when Dr Stephen Reasor, Chair of the Religious Studies department, presented a short homily.

Technology made it possible for Dr. Preston Hawes, Parkview Adventist Academy Alumnus of the Year for 2020, to share his violin music throughout the two-day event. The performances of recent Burman graduate, vocalist Romando Carey, and Professor Wendy Markosky also made the weekend memorable.

The College Heights Church is usually crowded on Sabbath mornings. Not so this time. But many participants joined in electronically to enjoy the Sabbath School program that Eric Rajah hosted. Again, technology came through for us.

We connected with alumni in service around the world.

Pastor Wally Lyder, speaking from his home in the state of Washington, was our guest speaker for the church service.

The weekend speakers chose topics that recognized the graduation motto, “Do justice, love mercy, and walk humbly with your God” (Micah 6:8), and aim, “Live Boldly. Live Vulnerably. Live on Purpose.”

Stephen Reasor, Chair of Religious Studies, Burman University, gave the consecration address on Friday evening. The title of his presentation was "A Revolution of Justice, Mercy, and Walking Humbly with God." The baccalaureate speaker, Massiel Dávila-Ferrer, Burman University’s chaplain, spoke on "Gritty Vulnerability." And Dr. Melanie Humphreys, President of the Kings University in Edmonton, Alberta, presented Sunday’s commencement address entitled "Extending Community: Walking Jesus' Radical Path."

Over the past three decades, the agency has evolved into an independent, registered charity that focuses on the health, education and well-being of children in impoverished communities, primarily in East Africa and Afghanistan. Each year, more than 50,000 children attend schools built by A Better World—schools that provide not only education, but also clean water and toilets in areas that lack all three.

Thirty-one years after founding ABW, Rajah is still the executive director, while Leavitt is the agency’s project director. Both have volunteered countless hours and invested financially not only in the costs associated with their work, but in project development as well.

Rajah, who was also inducted to the Alberta Order of Excellence in 2011, calls it a “special honour” to be included with other Meritorious Service Medal recipients. “I share this with hundreds who have supported the initiatives of A Better World,” he says. “It is humbling to serve those in need.”

Leavitt is also grateful for the acknowledgement of the agency and its volunteers. “It has been my privilege to provide humanitarian service to people in need over the last 30 years. To see the difference that a little organization like A Better World can make in a big world is overwhelming.”

A Better World has worked in 15 different countries on three foreign continents, investing $35.7 million into communities in need. It employs a unique model of community development, establishing long-term partnerships with communities to ensure stable development through community investment and ownership.

More than 2,600 volunteers have travelled overseas with A Better World to supervise and monitor project development and maintain community ties. Forty permanent volunteers manage ongoing programs and projects.

A New Opportunity

Creating Leaders Changing the World

In recognition of the complex life skills required of today’s graduates, a new co-curricular program is available to students this fall. The recently established Saruk Centre for Leadership Development on the campus of Burman University offers an intentional and developmental sequence of seminars and activities to help students acquire skills for effective leadership.

The stated mission of the Centre is “To develop effective leaders by enhancing life skills, inspiring values through service, and expanding leadership abilities through instruction, experience, and mentorship.”

The Saruk Centre developed out of a deep conviction that we are living in a time when Canada and the world need leaders of moral integrity, sound purpose, and clear vision. The founders chose Lacombe as its operating hub because it is in close proximity to Burman University and because the university’s values are in alignment with their own. Burman’s students have been taught excellence, service, spirituality, integrity, and community for more than a century.

A Complement to Academics

Future leaders will need to be prepared to work in an environment dominated by volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity.

This program will serve as a complement to academics for both employment and graduate school admission. In today’s world, employers and graduate schools are looking for applicants who stand out. They expect an academic transcript, but they look for more. More than 80 universities and colleges across Canada have responded to these expectations by offering students the opportunity to qualify for what is known as a Co-Curricular Record (CCR). Such a record can be presented to potential employers as an official document of activities, community service, and other non-academic accomplishments achieved while in university.

By complementing the university’s academic and extracurricular programs, the Saruk Centre will bring a systematic, organized approach to teaching the life and leadership skills that our ever-changing world now requires. The Centre’s founders anticipate that this venture on the campus of Burman University will give young men and women the tools to become

remarkable leaders wherever they are and however they choose to serve.

Burman University’s association with the Saruk Centre will thus provide students with the most holistic university experience possible, guiding them to maximize their personal and spiritual potential to become capable and respected leaders. The Centre’s intentional focus on leadership skills will make Burman’s graduates highly attractive to employers as well as professional and graduate school admissions committees.

The program’s cost is fully funded by the Centre with no cost to participating students. The Centre will design the nonacademic curriculum and bring in experts to provide students with some of the best leadership training available by blending seminars, activities, and networking opportunities with personal attention, professional development, intellectual engagement, and community outreach.

While developing their spiritual and emotional maturity, participating students will also receive training in matters as practical as writing resumés and managing money, and as personal as dealing with stress and developing self-confidence and self-awareness.

Designed to Enhance and Develop Leadership Abilities

Over a period of three years, students will have diverse opportunities to engage in activities identified as fostering lifelong learning. Through encouraging personal growth, developing employability skills, and enhancing transferable skills beyond what is recognized on their academic transcripts, students will graduate with the life and leadership skills expected of today’s university graduates.

Burman University’s mission, to “educate students to think with discernment, to believe with insight and commitment, and to act with confidence, compassion, and competence,” shapes the three-level structure of the program. These three levels are not mutually exclusive. Thinking, believing, and acting will be practiced on every level. The difference is one of emphasis and focus.

Level 1 | Believe: Setting One’s Self up for Success Individuals can’t function effectively as leaders until they know who they are. Workshops, seminars, practical experiences, and assignments focus on what is needed to be successful in life as a person, as a student, and as a leader. The goal is self-assessment and understanding, and discovering matching skills.

Level 2 | Act: Development of Skills

An Umbrella Institute

The Saruk Centre will also function as an umbrella organization. Although its primary initiative is leadership development, donors supportive of this may also have other interests in academic areas such as religious studies, the sciences, or education. While some of these special-interest programs are developing as needs arise, one current example of such a partnership is Burman University’s Scholars Program. (More information about the Scholars Program is available on the Burman University website.)

The Saruk Centre provides structure for those who share the founders’ passion to invest in the next generation of leaders.

It is an institute where students can learn to combine strong leadership skills with a solid ethical commitment to serve others. It welcomes anyone interested in the same goals.

(Second or Third Year of the Program) Workshops, seminars, practical experiences, and assignments focus on the acquisition and the further development of skills for successful leadership. This level may include subsidized travel for humanitarian projects or cultural experiences in places like Africa and Europe.

Level 3 | Think: Integration

(Third or Fourth Year of the Program) Every leader experiences the tension between the individual and the community. One cannot be pitted against the other. Knowing how to function within a given community requires knowing what that community wants. Workshops, seminars, practical experiences, and assignments emphasize the connections between the development of oneself and the success of others.

Each semester the Centre will conduct two Sunday sessions and one weekend session. Successful and respected professionals with wide experience in their areas of practice will conduct workshops and seminars.

The sessions are designed not as “another set of lectures,” but as interactive sessions where students will be engaged in active, participatory learning exercises. In addition to inviting local experts to facilitate sessions, at least one external leadership expert will present.

For the fall session, Dr. Sharon McDowell-Larsen will conduct the workshops for the Sunday, November 7 session. Sharon has worked with executives from all parts of the globe to improve their health and fitness. A faculty member at the Center for Creative Leadership (CCL), Sharon has had clients in her “Fitness for Leadership” module from SAIC, DOW Chemical, Mars Inc., Women in Cable and Telecommunications, RPM, Sodexo, the U.S. Navy, Pfizer, NEXEN, and General Motors.

What God has blessed us with, we need to share. Having held diverse leadership positions throughout my career, I can say with great certainty that effective leadership can be learned by trial and error. On the other hand, the trial and error method can have devastating results.

As I reflected on my desire to provide safer opportunities for up-and-coming leaders to learn leadership skills in formalized and intentional ways, I encountered others who share my interest and passion. They, too, believe that teaching leadership fundamentals along with providing opportunities to develop skills through job experience and effective mentorship will produce individuals who can continue to develop their strengths as they mature as leaders.

This Leadership Centre is the result of much collaboration and planning. Its founding members are committed to sharing and providing what they have learned in their career journeys. I envision students hearing from and interfacing not only with these visionary and experienced individuals, but also with other successful leaders with whom our founding members are acquainted.

Prior to her work at CCL, Dr. McDowell-Larsen worked with elite athletes at the US Olympic Committee’s Sports Science Division. While there, she was involved in research related to athletic performance, and the effects of stress on athletes.

These are exciting times as this leadership program (and others that the Centre is developing) will complement students’ academic pursuits to provide future leaders with a greater chance of success in their various roles as they embark on their careers.

I believe that we must provide mentorship and leadership opportunities that will make our graduates outstanding leaders for their communities, their church and this world. I see my involvement in the Saruk Centre as a way to accomplish this. This is my gift of gratitude for the impact Burman had on my life.

When I left my tenure track in academic biochemistry to pursue a career in dentistry, I determined that someday I would make an effort to return the investment of time, opportunity, and funding that my mentors in science had bestowed upon me. I see in the Saruk Centre for Leadership Development an opportunity to do just that.

All people have an influence on those in their sphere of interaction, yet their effectiveness for the betterment of society will be determined by their leadership skills and integrity. Practical leadership training of young people is the most efficient way to move forward.

I have spent the last 20 years working in the oil and gas industry in multiple countries and cultures across the world, leading teams and influencing people. Over the years, it became clear to me that the best learning opportunities for developing life and leadership skills are not found in the classrooms or lecture halls, but in real life experiences and situations that put one outside of one’s comfort zone.I I have also found that being guided by a mentor often makes a huge difference in successfully learning these skills.

The World Economic Forum recently released its list of the top 10 job skills for 2025: 1

I am excited about being involved with the Saruk Centre as it attempts to enhance life skills, service, and leadership abilities in young people. My goal is that every student who has spent time with the Saruk Centre will be a better leader who is equipped to live a life well lived.

I became a founding member of the Saruk Centre because I saw it as a great opportunity to help develop future leaders by taking approaches not typically employed by traditional academic institutions. I look forward to working with the other founding members to develop and run the Centre for the benefit of aspiring future leaders.

I also recognize that there are many skills and leadership abilities that I have acquired over the course of my professional career.

Students are not normally exposed to these in a traditional university. However, it is these qualities that contribute immensely to a meaningful, successful life.

The Alberta Ministry of Advanced Education has recently introduced the Work Integrated Learning (WIL) pilot program as an indicator of quality. We have accurately anticipated this public policy with initiatives that the School of Business has had in place for, at least, four years prior to this government pilot program.

Bob Honest Bob reports, “After graduating from Burman with my Bachelor of Business Administration/Management Track in 2020, I came back home to Toronto for a summer internship at Advent Health Care Corporation.

I was blessed to be offered a full-time position as an administrative resident after completing the seven-week internship. I now manage various projects within the operations of the organization, from financial analysis and human resources, to marketing and strategic planning.

Referring to her success, Gabrielle says, “Although nothing could have prepared me for teaching during a global pandemic, the work ethic that Burman’s education program nurtured in me was a huge part of my success this year!”

Then reflecting on the lifetime connections with faculty and fellow classmates, she encourages anybody looking to pursue their dreams of being an educator to attend Burman University.

Finally, we can announce that the university’s administration has voted to relocate the School of Business to the main floor of the former home of Parkview Adventist Academy. We welcome this decision, as this new location will improve both the marketing and quality standing of the school.

David Westwood | David is president of Burman University’s Educator’s Guild (2020-2021). He was awarded the Hockey Alberta Officials Committee Scholarship and also the Friends of the Alberta Junior Hockey League Scholarship last semester.

In addition, he was one of eight hockey officials from across Canada recognized nationally for academic and athletic achievements with the Kenneth R. Stiles Memorial Scholarship from Hockey Canada.

David had earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology from the University of Calgary. But because he had established roots in central Alberta, he chose to complete his After Degree program in secondary education at Burman University.

Maretes Emmons | Maretes is Burman University’s most recent recipient of a unique scholarship that recognizes excellence in spirituality, academics, civic service, and leadership in students attending Adventist colleges and universities in Canada and the United States.

The Weniger Student Fellow scholarship is presented by The Charles E. Weniger Society— an organization honouring the memory of seminary dean and English professor Charles E. Weniger. Since 1974, 184 individuals were presented with the Weniger Medallion for their exceptional contributions to their church, their professions, and their communities.

In turn, the Society is now encouraging excellence in young people with the Weniger Scholarship. Maretes is starting her third year studying elementary education with a minor in physical education.

/ CAMPUS NEWS • MUSIC / New Insights into Baroque Violin Music The “Covid year” was a productive one for Dr. Eduardo Solá. Assistant professor of music, Solá also found time for presenting at a number of conferences, publishing articles, as well as completing his translation and commented edition of Geminiani’s treatise The Art of Violin Playing.

Geminiani, an 18th-century Italian, was a performer and teacher. Solás new translation of The Art of Violin Playing is the first published translation of this treatise into Portuguese, Sola’s native language. He explains: “Geminiani’s work is the most authoritative and complete pedagogical source on violin playing of the baroque period. This publication will put Geminiani’s treatise within the reach of a much wider audience of scholars, students, and teachers.”

To add another faculty member to our group, Dr. Pierce, Dr. Wolfe, and I all taught courses at Red Deer College. We pooled the money we earned and hired Mr. Bill Cemer to teach brass lessons, direct the high school and college band, and teach a variety of other courses as needed.

When Dr. Pierce retired, Dr. Wolfe became chair of the department. Invariably courteous, encouraging, and patient, he was also appreciated for his quick wit. No matter how busy,

Zoe McCormick is First in “Classical Voice” Competition In the spring 2021 issue, Burman University Magazine reported Zoe McCormick’s Goody Foundation Scholarship. Since then, Zoe, accompanied by Matthew Peavoy on the piano, was awarded first in the Alberta Excellence in Classical Voice at the 2021 Alberta Music Festival provincials. The Alberta Excellence classes currently replace national qualifying classes.

Burman Music Graduate Continues Studies at University of Alberta Shannon Machtans, music major, was accepted into the Master of Music and Master of Music Performance at the University of Alberta. Her plan is to complete the two degrees within the next three years and then continue with doctoral studies.

Solá's book is divided into two sections. In the first, Solá comments on Geminiani’s text. He addresses the historical context, technical aspects, linguistic problems and issues, and other implications of reading this work today. He also discusses Geminiani’s work as a teacher and performer in light of his pedagogical approach. The second part of the book is the translation proper, including the musical examples and compositions provided by Geminiani in facsimile format.

Solá’s work is edited and printed by PACO publishing house, an academic/scholarly publisher in São Paulo, Brazil.

Curtis Wolfe 1933— 2020

When I joined the music department in the late 1970s, there were three of us. Dr. Charles Pierce, chair, taught the music history classes as well as private voice and piano lessons. Dr. Curtis Wolfe taught the music theory classes and private violin lessons, and directed both the orchestra and the band. I directed the college choir, started a lady’s choir, and taught private voice lessons, classical guitar, and conducting.

he was always ready to help out. He had a lovely tenor voice and often performed vocal or violin solos at both secular and religious programs on campus.

Dr. Curtis Wolfe loved life. His energy seemed boundless.

Not only did he teach, he was also the handyman for our department. When we needed a listening centre for the students, he built it. When students needed their instruments repaired, he fixed them.

For Love of Music

Shannon’s love of music started early. She recalls, “I was always singing.” As a teen, she played her flute in school, city, and provincial bands. In her high school senior year, she learned to play the bassoon and led worship in music at her church.

Dr. Wendy Markosky, chair, announces a change in programming. She reports that Burman now offers an academic degree that combines music with biomedical studies. The pilot program that recognized the interest that science students also had in music has now been re-worked and formalized into a 4-year bachelor’s degree with a pre-med/dental option.

Shannon writes, “I love performing, but I can suffer terribly from stage fright. Having kind, encouraging professors at Burman allowed me to become confident, own my mistakes (without dwelling on them), and try to do better next time.

Without their support, I would never have had the courage or self-esteem to apply and audition for a master’s program.”

The department was vibrant. Some years we were bursting at the seams. When Dr. Neville Matthews, president at the time, encouraged us to apply for provincial accreditation, we worked on a proposal for a Bachelor of Music degree. It was one of the

Dr. Snipes-Hoyt has contributed significantly to Burman’s status as a university with her research and professional activities. For twenty years, 1998-2018, she served as the secretary-treasurer of AIZEN (the Association International Zola et le Naturalisme), and she continues as an associate editor of Excavatio, sponsored by AIZEN. Her many essays on turn-of-the twentieth century French literature and culture have appeared in journals and collections. In collaboration with fellow scholars, she also collected and published two volumes of academic essays.

Over the years, Dr. Snipes-Hoyt’s wide interests and experiences have lent themselves to serving the university in a number of unusual ways. For instance, her interest in European art, languages, and travel made it possible for her to assist the Burman Scholars program in the delivery and logistics for a course that was taught on-site in Greece and Italy.

Memories of Curtis Wolfe

Dr. Wolfe has left an indelible mark on this university, on this department, and on the hundreds of students and colleagues who remember him as a dedicated teacher and Christian gentleman.

Since 1980, Dr. Carolyn Snipes-Hoyt has been connected in many ways to the Hilltop. She taught students at both Parkview Adventist Academy and Burman University (aka Canadian Union College and Canadian University College) in her French, German, English, and history classes. For the past seven years, Dr. SnipesHoyt was Associate Professor of Modern Languages at Burman.

Her background of having lived and taught in French-speaking Africa gave her many advantages to connect in positive ways with Burman’s international and cross-Canada students whose first language is French.

Dr. John McDowell, Dean, Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, writes, “Dr. Carolyn Snipes-Hoyt took on the many roles offered her here on the Hilltop with dedication and professionalism.

She is a compassionate, patient teacher. She is a motivator— always helpful and wise, a valued colleague, and a deeply valued friend. Students, staff, and faculty will miss her. Not ready to let her go completely, I am enticing her back to teach some contract courses.”

Note of interest | Family records show that Carolyn's mother, aunts, and uncle were students at CJC in the 1930s and 40s. At that time, a great aunt, Elizabeth Nickel, directed food services and taught German on campus as well.

What ensues? Chaos? Calamity? Selfishness? “I want my portion even if you go short?”

One dish, one spoon. More than enough food for all. How will this work?

/ C A M P U S N E W S • I N T E R N AT I O N A L S T U D I E S / “Dish with One Spoon” is an ancient concept known to First Nations peoples in the Great Lakes area for hundreds of years. It predates first contact with Europeans by centuries. The Iroquois and Algonquin Peoples, bitter enemies for years, see this fertile, resource-rich meal (the Great Lakes Region) as “one dish.” The “spoon” represents the nations of the Great League of Peace: the Seneca, Cayuga, Oneida, Onondaga, and Mohawk nations, and then the Ojibwé, Odawa, Potawatomi, Saulteaux, Mississauga, and Algonquin nations.

Gdoo-naaganinaa, Ojibwé for “our dish” or “a dish with one spoon” is a legal concept (think common and civil law) recorded with the use of a wampum belt for all member nations to avoid or reconcile conflict for lasting peace. The Dish with One Spoon Treaty is still recognized and often included in land acknowledgments in the Great Lakes region. Its core principles come from the visual of the wampum belt and what it signifies.

Within this Treaty practice, we find what we need today for lasting peace, and, where needed, reconciliation. We take only what we need. We may have rights, but we also have responsibilities to all society, including those we don’t get along with. We leave some for everybody else.

An economy of reciprocity highlights that all we have is from Creator and was given to bless and share with others.

We keep the bowl/land clean because the Creator’s first choice was to make us stewards for now, and for future generations.

There is no knife at this table. No violence is done.

Weapons of violence are set aside. The bitterest of enemies are now adopted into the same family. Everyone’s equality under Treaty recognizes the distinctness of each individual and the sovereignty of nations. These principles will result in an ongoing peace, where each new treaty builds on the ones before.

Over it all presides the generosity of Creator. His children are sharing. We are all eating out of the one dish.

Peace and reconciliation mean all have both rights and responsibilities.

If one didn’t call it a “Dish with One Spoon” one may not have to look too hard to see striking similarities to the teachings of Scripture.

We are all Treaty people. Peace and reconciliation today personally and as a country will be achieved when Treaty is honoured.

Burman Professor Warns of Worldwide Threat to Democracy The Big Lie: Tribalism and the Populist Threat to Democracy shows that since 2010, populist parties and leaders in more than twenty countries have dominated national elections with a “big lie.” The lie, the authors assert, is different in each country, but the message is the same: “The elites have cheated you and stolen your country. You need a champion of the people to take it back.”

But, Froese and Drache point out, the sovereignty-now argument at the heart of the MAGA movement in the US and Brexit in the UK, for example, are the right idea in the wrong hands. The populists play to people’s fear of being left behind but offer only nostalgia for an imagined past when things were supposedly better.

Our societies need real reform, not paper patriots.

This timely book is under review at a university press and is scheduled to be published early next year.

Kiš Counsels Balance Dr. Adam Kiš suggested ways of making ethical and moral decisions in cross-cultural situations to the Maskwacis Townhall Committee of the Alberta Seventh-day Adventist Conference this summer. As the church outreach to indigenous Canadians continues to grow, increasingly more decisions that are both faithful to Scripture and culturally-appropriate are sought.

The insights Dr. Kiš shared are influenced by his missionary background and his anthropological training. This unique combination is the fertile background from which he urges a careful balance, and one that reflects both good theology and good anthropology.

/ CAMPUS NEWS • RELIGIOUS STUDIES / IPPY Award for Koine Immersion Series The Koine Immersion Series by Stephen Reasor, chair of the religious studies program, is an ongoing project that will eventually include twelve digital volumes, as well as workbooks, readers, and other resource books. Each volume will transition into more advanced material and will continue to add to the students’ intuitive grasp of New Testament vocabulary, grammar, and syntax. By the end of the series, students will recognize by sight and sound all New Testament words occurring more than 30 times, as well as the most helpful vocab items for conversational fluency. The goal is for students to learn around 1,200 common words and reach a basic level of hearing, speaking, and reading proficiency in NT Greek.

“The Inductive Approach” or “The Communicative Approach” introduces students to language learning in an interactive, fun, and semi-immersive way.

It draws on the best insights from linguistic theory and language pedagogy to both bring the language to life and bring life to the language. The Koine Immersion Series has students listening to, speaking, reading, writing, and “watching” the language. The electronic format of the digital volumes allows students to take short assessments along the way and receive instant feedback.

West Coast Religion Teachers Conference

The progression of learning in this series mimics a natural learning process. Each learning unit consists of two video elements as well as written descriptions. In the first video, students see pictures and hear words and phrases that correspond with those pictures. They decipher the meaning of the words and phrases based on the pictures and learn the language by ear. They then repeat the first video and practice repeating the words and phrases. The second video repeats the first video but with Greek subtitles, allowing students to then connect the text with the words and phrases they have already learned.

The series is one-fourth completed. Reasor is utilizing it in his classes and finds that it has led to a positive shift in student enjoyment and performance. The first volume of the series

This past April, Burman University hosted the first-ever virtual meeting of the West Coast Religion Teachers Conference.

This annual conference invites religion faculty from Burman University, La Sierra University, Loma Linda University, Pacific Union College, and Walla Walla University to present papers and engage in collegial discussions of mutual interest.

The theme this year was “Adventist Identity in Diverse Cultures.” Six papers were presented, as well as roundtable and panel discussions. Up to 25 attendees participated in the Friday and Saturday meetings. On Saturday morning, the conference joined the church service of Friendship Company, a ministry initiated by Burman faculty Bruce Boyd and Kevin Burrell.

Evangelism Conference More than 100 participants from across Canada attended Burman University’s The First Canadian Inter-Provincial Evangelism Conference on April 9 and 10. Dr. Lindsay Chineegadoo, assistant professor in religious studies and coordinator of this event, explains, “The goal of this virtual conference was to facilitate an interprovincial dialogue, a listening forum on the challenges and issues facing the Gospel mission in its Canadian context.”

Changing demographics of the Canadian Seventh-day Adventist Church (primarily a result of immigration from nonEuropean countries), and the intersection between the current digital culture and people’s spiritual needs were addressed.

General Conference president, Ted Wilson, gave the opening address. Then, following presentations by keynote speakers, discussion panels shared questions, insights, and personal experiences.

Responses were enthusiastic. For example, Pastor Jakov Bibulovic wrote from Ontario, “We welcome the initiative and the opportunity to share and learn the best practices in evangelism and church growth." And one of the panelists, Teresa Ferreira from the Maritime Conference, reported, “God provided words and thoughts as His Spirit led. I greatly appreciated the [shared] perspectives.”

Ern Brake from British Columbia, said, “I was excited that [this event], organized by Burman University, spoke to a special need in Canada: that with the increasing diversity across the Canadian demographic, we need to activate an increasing diversity of gifts and talents to reach Canadians with the Christcentered message of hope and wholeness. Thank you, Burman!”

When Lewis first arrived at Canadian Junior College (now Burman University), his goal was to become a doctor—the perfect career for a farm boy who found it difficult to talk to more than one person at a time. So he enrolled in pre-med classes. "But God had other plans," he says.

Successfully urging a friend to make a faith commitment marked a turning point in Lewis' life. In 1950, he graduated with a degree in theology. He first pastored in New York. Then he moved back to Canada to lead congregations in Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Alberta.

An invitation from the Church's world headquarters to pastor in Asia rekindled a memory from school days. Lewis recalled that years ago he had filled out a survey that asked, “If you were a missionary, where would you choose to serve?” Lewis thought back to his answer: first choice, the Far East; second choice, the Far East, third choice, the same.

“My dream became an exciting reality," he says and recounts memories of six years with his family in a region encompassing South Korea, Indonesia, the Philippines, Thailand, and Singapore, where his work was the training of lay pastors.

One of Lewis' most vivid memories from his time there was presenting a Bible to the king of Thailand on the king's birthday. “It was received with royal ceremony,” he writes.

Now in his 94th year, Lewis says “God’s plan has filled my soul with praise and thanksgiving for the transformation of a shy farm boy to a world traveler for the King of the Universe. I will be ever grateful to my alma mater, Burman University.”

Physical Education Centre Back in Business The entire Physical Education Centre, including the Gwen Bader Fitness Centre, has reopened to the public after almost a year and a half of closure or reduced hours and limited usage due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Since the summer, the facility is again serving students, faculty, staff, and community members.

A full parking lot is evidence of strong community support for what the Centre offers. It indicates that, despite a persistent pandemic, people are trying to create a "new normal."

In June, director Ron Schafer reported, “Our overall usage is still not back to normal as many people are still uncertain of the status of the pandemic. For example, two years ago the Gwen Bader Fitness Centre recorded approximately 4,000 visits over a 16-day period. During that same time period this past summer, our numbers were down to approximately 3,000.

The staff anticipate a busier time than usual this fall as customers return to more regular schedules, students return to campus, and traditional classes and activities (such as the seniors’ fitness classes) resume. New to Burman’s campus is Vincent Enriquez, laboratory technician and lab instructor in biology. Mr. Enriquez holds a master’s degree with a specialization in mycology. His primary research interest lies in optimal plant nutrition as facilitated through plant rootmycorrhizal associations.

Mr. Enrique comes from a National Institutes of Health-funded lab in the Marshall Islands. An experienced mentor for research students and interns, Mr. Enriquez has laboratory experience both for independent research and class demonstrations.

His basic skills include culture media preparations, autoclaving, experimental research design, data collection, and stat analysis. He has also presented at seminars and scientific conferences.

The faculty of the biology department support Mr. Enriquez's appointment, noting that he has a number of publications and will be a great asset to our students and to research going forward.

Gift Honours Alumnus from a Century Ago Dr. Laurence Wong, chair, announces receipt of a $20,000 donation to the biology department. This gift was presented in honour of an alumnus of Alberta Industrial Academy (now Burman University) who worked his way through school more than 100 years ago.

Greenhouse Update

Dr. Wong writes, “We will split the $20,000. Half will support faculty research; the other half will purchase FPLC [fast protein liquid chromatography] equipment to be used for instruction as well as research."

A sidewalk was poured and the greenhouse area was landscaped in preparation for the fall semester.

Students have the opportunity to be involved in the interior setup and first year running of the new greenhouse this school year.

FPL Chromatography, used in complex protein purification procedures, is a welcome addition to the department's research capability.

When fall colors fade and Alberta's winter chill arrives, summer will continue in the greenhouse and butterfly lab.

New Course Offering Burman is excited to offer a new Lifestyle Medicine course in the winter semester this school year. The course will include guest lectures from health professionals with broad experience in lifestyle medicine.

Becoming Alberta's Best Psychology Program

Dr. George Relocates to Alabama For 29 years, Darren and Elizabeth George have been an integral part of Burman University. Dr. George, chair of the psychology program, is an educator, a prolific researcher, accomplished musician, athlete, and host.

A trombonist, Darren George has led multiple bands, orchestras, brass ensembles, jazz bands. and the Ritchie Trombone Choir.

Groups of Burman students (up to 83 at a time) gathered in the George home on more than 150 Friday nights over the past 20 years. Darren and Elizabeth calculate that more than 1,000 students came through their doors during those years to discuss how to form successful relationships leading to marriage.

Among academicians, Dr. Darren George may be best known for his 400-page SPSS textbook IBM SPSS Statistics Step by Step; A Simple Guide and Reference that he co-authored with Paul Mallery (La Sierra University). This popular textbook is the #1 selling book worldwide on data analysis using statistical software. It is distributed in 85 countries of the world, is in its 16th edition, and has sold over 100,000 copies. The 17th edition of this book will be out later this year.

Why Choose Psychology at Burman?

The advantages of studying in a small university are clear.

For instance, a low student/faculty ratio generally means that students can register for required courses without having to worry that these have reached maximum enrolments and are no longer available to them that semester.

Another important advantage is that every program at Burman University operates in an environment where students have easy access to professors. This advantage is of particular significance to psychology students for at least two important reasons: • Since an undergraduate psychology degree is not a degree that leads directly to a specific profession, guidance is important. Research indicates that guidance rates high on student evaluations of their psychology program. According to Dr. Dadria Lewis, “The psychology faculty have not veered off the track to becoming ‘Alberta’s Best Psychology Program’ [see Burman University Magazine, Spring 2021, 19-20]. Our eyes are firmly set on this goal.”

Dr. Carole Anderson, Director of Program Development, emphasizes, “It is the intent of the psychology faculty to help students succeed personally and professionally.” Developing experience in the field of psychology and publishing research in conjunction with faculty are crucial.

Meet a Member of the Psychology Faculty Daniel Saugh is an educator, pastor, and psychotherapist. He completed his doctoral studies at Wilfrid Laurier University and earned a master’s degree at Loma Linda University.

Burman students will be inspired by his passion for serving and helping people experience a wholistic approach to a healthy and productive life.

Dr. Saugh is a researcher with Wilfrid Laurier University in the area of PTSD, moral injury, psychological trauma, and mental health. He has presented at national and international conferences and, in collaboration with colleagues, has been published by the Canadian Public Health Association and in the peer-reviewed Journal of Spirituality in Mental Health.

Betty Bayer has been a member of the Burman University Board since 2016 when she was elected as the Director of Education for the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Canada.

Burman has always held a special place in her heart as Canada’s only Adventist university, and she continues to be especially grateful for its quality education program that provides approximately half the elementary and secondary teachers for the K-12 Adventist school system in Canada. She celebrates Burman’s focus on continuous improvement, aspiring one day to see the addition of a few graduate degree options, a variety of certificate programs, and additional flexible learning opportunities.

Dr. Bayer is a product of Adventist education and has dedicated her life to serving God as an Adventist educator. She and her husband Peter, a recently retired science teacher, have one son.

Dr. Saugh teaches psychology classes that include research methods, developmental psychology, sensation and perception, and environmental psychology.

In his youth, Darren ran a 2:20:10 marathon and 1:05:43 half marathon. He still maintains high level fitness with a strict exercise regimen and adherence to health principles. Ten years ago, he coached Jodi Sanguin (Red Deer College) to a National Collegiate Cross-Country Championship. Two years later, Jodi qualified for the open Canadian International Cross-Country Championship team.

Dr. George lived up to the scriptural admonition, “Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your might.” Throughout his years at Burman University, he encouraged and enabled his students to do the same. He published in peer-reviewed journals with 25 undergraduate students. When he realized that he would need to leave Burman to move to Alabama for family reasons, he often worked 12-hour days to complete the research

Mansfield Edwards was elected president of the Ontario Conference of Seventh-day Adventists in 2009 and has served on Burman’s Board of Trustees since then. He encourages Burman to explore partnerships with organizations that are compatible with the university’s mission and have the financial strength to impact wide populations.

Edwards’ influence led to Burman’s participation in the Earth Day Summit, a creation-emphasis initiative that included other Adventist universities such as Andrews University, Loma Linda University, and Northern Caribbean University. The event attracted some 16,000 guests at the International Centre in Mississauga, Ontario.

Pastor Edwards also encourages Burman University to host other initiatives, such as career choice summits, in partnership with SDA conferences throughout Canada.

Mansfield and Sharon Edwards have two adult sons, both alumni of Burman University.

Healing Hands • Giving Hands The clasped hands of Dr. Wilford Tetz and Burman alumnus Eric Rajah tell the story of the doctor's exemplary life of healing, giving, and enduring friendships. Dr. Tetz, a beloved local doctor and life-long Burman supporter, passed away on August 19, 2021.

He was 97 years old.

Dr. Graham was one of the most beloved and well-respected colleague, Paul Mills university professors. It was obvious to everyone that teaching was one of his greatest joys. He received the Zapara Award for Excellence in Teaching in 1990.

A dedicated historian and follower of current events, Terry took notes every day for many decades on everything happening at home in Canada and around the world. He used these notes in his lectures, making sure his students were learning history right up to the present day.

Dr. Graham’s classes, such as the 7:30 a.m. Canadian History class, were scheduled at “challenging” times of the day for some students. The 1:30 and 2:35 p.m. classes could also be challenging, especially for those who had just enjoyed a full lunch. But paying close attention reaped some delightful surprises. Though a quiet man, Terry had a sharp sense of humour that zipped past when his students least expected it and resulted in uproarious laughter.

Sports were also high on Terry’s list of favourites. In his youth, he was often on the basketball court and baseball field. Even when his health prevented him from playing, he continued to watch his favourite professional teams. But golfing took him out on the course with his friends for many years.

Burman President Loren Agrey recalls, “He had the straightest shot of anyone I played with. Nine times out of 10, it was straight down the middle. We had some good times together, playing and discussing history and/or politics.”

Agrey continues, “Rest well, Terry. Your family, friends, colleagues, and students will miss you and remember the difference you made in their lives. Until Jesus returns, rest well.”
