CELEBR ATING THE CITY’S unique position in the fine art and antique market, Classic Art London (CAL) is a new event that gathers renowned dealers showing museum-quality old and Modern masterworks. Alongside selling exhibitions by participating galleries, CAL will host a series of academic talks at the Society of Antiquaries. The talks, organised in collaboration with The Burlington Magazine and the Society for the History of Collecting, will take place on Monday 30th June and will cover topics such as the 250th anniversary of J.M.W. Turner’s birth, the impact of climate change on art institutions, and shared ownership between public museums and private collections. Contributing to the vibrant summer season dedicated to classic art in London, the event coincides with major auction house sales, the Royal Academy of Arts’ Summer Exhibition, the annual exhibition by Trois Crayons and Treasure House Fair.
Highlights in the presentation of old masters include a rediscovered painting by Titian at Trinity Fine Art, paintings of Venice in the nineteenth century at Charles Beddington, drawings and watercolours by Constance Gordon-Cumming at Karen Taylor Fine Art, miniature portraits at the Limner Company and works on paper by J.M.W. Turner at Guy Peppiatt Fine Art. Representing Modern masters, Daniel Katz Gallery shows significant works by Paul Nash, Ben Elwes Fine Art introduces a global view of early twentieth-century Cubism, while Haynes Fine Art and David Messum display works by important Impressionists.

GUIDED BY THE THEME ‘Tracing Time’, 35 participants this year have submitted works on paper for the second iteration of Trois Crayons, a selling exhibition of drawings. Trois Crayons is an innovative platform which aims to increase the awareness, accessibility and visibility of drawings in all their forms; their exhibition will present the finest drawings and masterpieces on paper from renowned galleries and dealers, which span the fifteenth century until the present day. ‘Tracing Time’ will showcase works by artists such as Hans Rottenhammer, Giovanni Domenico Tiepolo, J.M.W. Turner and Jean Cocteau, and present rare-to-market works. A broad spectrum of media, periods and nationalities are represented.
The event at Frieze No.9 Cork Street is larger this year, with more dealers, more works of art and an expanded talks programme. Subjects of the talks programme include John Constable, Jean-Antoine Watteau and historic women artists. The Burlington Magazine will co-host a talk – Dr William Aslet will present his research on James Gibbs’s designs for Burlington House, which was published in the April issue. There will also be off-site visits to the Courtauld Gallery and the print rooms at the Victoria & Albert Museum.
