STEPHEN ONGPIN FINE ART Old Master, 19th Century and Modern Drawings
Gerrit Battem 1636(?)-1684 A Scene of Combat Before a Sacrificial Altar Pen and black ink and white gouache, on brown prepared paper, en grisaille. Signed Battem at the upper right. 146 x 252 mm. (53/4 x 97/8 in.) Although best known for his landscape gouaches, Gerrit Battem also produced a small number of Biblical or mythological scenes in monochrome, such as this, which have been dated to the second half of the 1650s. Only some fifteen examples of these grisailles are known today, of which are several are in the British Museum and the Louvre, as well as the Fondation Custodia, the Cleveland Museum of Art and the Art Institute of Chicago. Although most of these monochrome drawings depict scenes from the New Testament, they are of different sizes and formats, and are unlikely to have been conceived as a series. Indeed, finished and signed grisaille drawings such as this were probably intended as autonomous works of art in their own right.

A selection of highlights to be exhibited at the Fair of TEFAF Maastricht will once more prove to be at the very epicentre of buying and selling art at the highest level. As a magnet for private collectors and institutional buyers the fair has no rival for quality, authenticity and breadth of works. 189 experts working in 29 categories undertake the strict vetting process that underpins every object. Most aspects of fine and decorative arts will be offered for sale ranging from Neolithic tools to contemporary art and design. We have attempted to convey the breadth of the fair through the objects illustrated in the following pages.
THE THIRTY-FIRST EDITION
Model of a caparisoned horse. China. Northern Quing dynasty (550–577). Eathenware, 36.5 by 23.5 by 30.8 cm. BEN JANSSENS ORIENTAL ART, LONDON
The Virgin surrounded by saints. Nuremberg. c.1450–1460. Canvas on wood, 138 by 206 cm. DE BACKKER MEDIEVAL ART, HOOGSTRATEN
A key feature of the event will be the annual museum loan exhibition, which reinforces the affinity that exists between the fair and the museum world. This year the Amsterdam Museum will bring several restored seventeenth–century masterpieces from its collection. The centrepiece of the exhibition will be The headmen of the Longbow Civic Guard House by Bartholomeus van der Helst (c.1613–1670). In addition to admiring the restoration of this work, viewers will be able to examine some of the sixteenth–century silverware that is depicted in the painting. Other recently restored works will include a painting by Ferdinand Bol (1616–1680) showing the governors of the Amsterdam Leper’s Asylum and two depicting anatomy lessons, one by Aert Pietersz (1550–1612), the other by Adriaen Backer (1635–1684). This year marks the tenth anniversary of the support TEFAF gives to the Cultural Emergency Response (CER) programme run by the Prince Claus Fund, which seeks to preserve cultural heritage and to rescue collections in need. Most recently aid has been given to the severely neglected library of the S. Augustin Monastery in Quito, Ecuador, which was hit by an earthquake in 2016. In addition to this support, the TEFAF Museum Restoration Fund has made financial awards to the Museu de Arte Antiga (MNAA), Portugal, and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. This milestone publication is the first to offer a comprehensive account of these vicissitudes of cultural exchange, covering over 2500 years with lively prose and gorgeous illustrations. THE J. This exhibition catalogue provides new insight into Szeemann’s remarkable curatorial philosophy by drawing upon his archive. THE GETTY RESEARCH INSTITUTE Hardcover £55.00
Harald Szeemann Selected Writings Harald Szeemann Edited by Doris Chon, Glenn Phillips, and Pietro Rigolo
As a curator who helped herald in movements as disparate as Pop Art, Conceptualism, and Fluxus, Harald Szeemann is recognized as a tastemaker of twentieth-century art. He was also a prolific writer, and up until now his writings had not been collected in English. This thoughtfully assembled volume takes up that task and the result is a lively look inside the mind of the eccentric and respected Swiss curator. THE GETTY RESEARCH INSTITUTE Paper £40.00

SALON DU DESSIN – 21st to 26th March 2018 PALAIS BRONGNIART, PLACE DE LA BOURSE, PARIS
edition of the Salon du Dessin will once again occupy the neo-classical Palais Brongniart, the nineteenthcentury home of the Paris stock exchange. Collectors, connoisseurs and museum curators eagerly anticipate this annual celebration of drawings in order to make purchases or simply to admire and study the works on offer. Thirty-nine international dealers, five of whom are new to the fair, will present works spanning most European schools from the Italian and Northern Renaissance to the modern day. On these pages we aim to show the diversity and high calibre of the drawings to be offered for sale.

Study for Ave Picardia Nutrix, by Pierre Puvis de Chavannes (1824– 1898). 1865. Charcoal, 53 by 42.5 cm. DIDIER AARON & CIE, PARIS, NEW YORK, LONDON
This year the loan exhibition will come from the newly renovated Musée d’Arts de Nantes. The museum’s new print room houses more than 13,000 drawings and prints, principally from the eighteenth century to the present day. Visitors to the fair will be able to view some of the jewels of the collection, including drawings by Jacques-Louis David (1748–1825), Odilon Redon (1840–1916) and a geometric work by the neoplastic painter Jean Gorin (1899–1981). Also on loan to the fair will be thirty-eight drawings from the graphic arts collection of the historic Parisian jeweller Maison Chaumet. At the heart of the display will be exquisite workshop designs for tiaras, many of which were commissioned by extremely wealthy women including Empress Marie-Louise and the oil heiress Gertrude Vanderbilt. A two-day symposium, Drawing and the Performing Arts – Gesture and Space, will be staged in the venue’s auditorium on 21st and 22nd March. Hosted by Pierre Rosenberg and Michèle Sajous D’Oria, there will be ten presentations by invited international speakers. These will reflect on drawings that show theatrical life including stage designs and portraits of actors and dancers. Drawings Week, a collaboration between the fair and twenty-five participating museums, will offer the public rare access to small displays in print rooms, talks and private gallery tours. This off-site itinerary will include Rembrandt etchings at Musée Condé, Chateau de Chantilly, recent acquisitions and miniature portraits at the Fondation Custodia and The Art of Pastel at the Petit Palais (reviewed on pages 246–49 of this issue). For more information on the fair, Drawings Week and the symposium please visit www.salondudessin.com

ALLEGORY of ASTROLOGY (?) Watercolor and pencil, on paper Height: 19, 2 cm Length: 15 cm Signed lower left, in pen and brown ink: P.Olivier, ft Peter Oliver was employed by Charles I to copy paintings in the Royal Collection and elsewhere. This work is a partial study of Corregio’s Allegory of the Virtues that was executed circa 1529 for Isabella d’Este studiolo in Mantua, and was later bought by Charles I in 1627 together with the major part of the Gonzaga collections (it is now in the Louvre). A comparison with other works from this commission that remain in the Royal Collection at Winsor Castle tends to prove that the frame is original.

Ludwig Ferdinand Schnorr von Carolsfeld 1788 Königsberg – 1853 Vienna
St. Cecilia. 1823. Oil on panel. Signed with a monogram and dated.
“If you were to start with the basic idea of the painting, with Ceciliaʼs sympathy for peopleʼs fate, her loving care for the harmony of life, for the music of emotions and the art of sounds, then you could not help but admire the excellence and the importance of Schnorrʼs artistic achievement.” (Friedrich Schlegel,1823; in: Hormayrʼs Archiv, 1823, no. 38, p. 197ff).
