Moonlit seascape, by Claude-Joseph Vernet (1714–89). Oil on canvas, 135 by 100 cm. MAURIZIO NOBILE, BOLOGNA AND PARIS

THE TWENTY-EIGHTH staging of the Biennale des Antiquaires will be the last occasion on which the event will be followed by a ‘gap year’, as the fair is to become annual in 2017. A new initiative in 2016 will please collectors and aficionados of old-master paintings as the previously independent annual winter event, Paris Tableau, will be integrated. Despite the dissolution of the Paris Tableau fair in 2015, the dealer collective will remain united and continue with a programme of activities. With the return of old-master paintings to the fair this preview will mainly focus on the specialist dealers in this field (The customary range of objects usually associated with the event will include antiquities, ceramics, sculpture, tribal art, furniture, textiles and jewellery). Master paintings from most prominent European schools will be for sale at the Grand Palais. Flemish paintings will be shown on the stand of Galerie de Jonckheere. In particular, Bosch: The Close Circle, a curated group of unseen works by followers of Hieronymus Bosch (1450–1516) will be a highlight of the fair and mark the 500th anniversary of the artist’s death. Vision of St. Anthony of Padua by Bartolomé Esteban Murillo (1617–1682) will be available with Madrid-based dealer Ana Chiclana. Charles Beddington Ltd, a specialist in eighteenth-century Venetian view paintings will offer two fine works by Giovanni Paolo Panini (1747–1819) showing fishermen on the Mediterranean coast. There will also be formidable showings of nineteenth-century works at the fair including the brooding self-portrait in profile by French artist Hippolyte Flandrin (1809–64) on the stand of Galerie Michel Descours. Modern and contemporary paintings will be in abundance. Of note, and for sale with Applicat-Prazan, will be the highly textured 1951 canvas Composition claire by Nicolas de Staël (1914–55). Other exhibitions and events will include an exhibition of French objects from the State Hermitage Museum, St. Petersburg, a display by Le Mobilier National showing the evolution of twentieth-century furniture, and a symposium with the theme The Dandy, from Van Dyck to Oscar Wilde arranged by Paris Tableau.

THE GETTY Real/Ideal Photography in Mid-Nineteenth Century France Edited by Karen Hellman In the years following the announcement of the invention of photography in 1839, practitioners in France gave shape to this intriguing new medium through experimentation in compositions and processes. Featuring works by key figures, such as Édouard Baldus, Gustave Le Gray, and Charles Nègre, this elegant volume investigates photography’s early history when the ambiguities inherent in the photograph were ardently debated. THE J. PAUL GETTY MUSEUM Hardcover £40.00

Marie-Antoinette Hélène Delalex, Alexandre Maral, and Nicolas Milovavonic One of the world’s most famous—and infamous—queens, MarieAntoinette continues to fascinate historians, writers, and filmmakers more than two centuries after her death. Rooted in careful study of royal material culture, this book provides an intimate glimpse into the queen’s life through not only her exquisite dresses and ornate furnishing at Versailles, but also more personal objects, including her harp, her sewing kit, and her children’s toys. THE J. PAUL GETTY MUSEUM Hardcover £32.50

Hans Hofmann The Artist’s Materials Dawn V. Rogala The career of the German-American painter and educator Hans Hofmann describes the arc of artistic modernism from pre–World War I Munich and Paris to mid-twentieth-century Greenwich Village. Through the keen eyes of a conservator, Dawn V. Rogala examines the materials and practices of Hofmann in this gorgeously illustrated book and provides new insight into his life and art. THE GETTY CONSERVATION INSTITUTE Paper £25.00

Color Science and the Visual Arts A Guide for Conservators, Curators, and the Curious Roy S. Berns In this lively and accessible book, color science expert Roy S. Berns helps the reader understand complex color-technology concepts and offers solutions to problems that occur when art is displayed, conserved, imaged, or reproduced. Stunning color images, helpful diagrams, and a sense of deep curiosity all make this volume an essential tool for professionals, laypeople, and students alike. THE GETTY CONSERVATION INSTITUTE Paper £35.00

Dangerous Perfection Ancient Funerary Vases from Southern Italy Edited by Ursula Kästner and David Saunders In the early nineteenth century, a set of richly decorated vases was found in Ceglie, near Bari. They were then reconstructed by one of the leading restorers at that period, Raffaele Gargiulo, whose methods were founded in the belief that the modern additions should be indistinguishable from the ancient. In this thorough and lavish book, the editors give a full account of the vases from their nineteenth-century discovery up through conservation efforts today. THE J. PAUL GETTY MUSEUM Hardcover £40.00

The Invention of the American Art Museum From Craft to Kulturgeschichte, 1870 –1930 Kathleen Curran Although today they may work in tandem, American art museums differ in both form and function from their European counterpart. This groundbreaking study of these beloved national institutions delves into their rich roots in craft museums up through their shift to a culturalhistorical model, which remains prevalent even to this day.
