How will your practice score?

Meet Morgan Family Dental

Dedicated to Your Success When our founder, William E. Burkhart D.D.S., set out to create a dental supply company in 1888, he did so with the idea that helping our clients grow their business through strong relationships would be one of the company’s founding principles. Building relationships is exactly what the Burkhart Customer Service team does here 138 years later. Every one of our Customer Service representatives has a genuine desire to help people. It’s one of the most important qualities we look for when a new associate joins our team. We add to that desire to help by training our representatives, so they have a wealth of dental industry knowledge. It’s this combination of knowledge and a servant’s heart that makes every one of our representatives a valuable resource for anyone they work with. We understand that in the dental office, time is a precious resource. Our team believes that it is our responsibility to give you, our clients, as much, or as little time as possible to address your needs. If you call our Customer Service number, you’ll be connected with a real, knowledgeable person within 30 seconds that is ready to help solve whatever issue you may have by finding a solution that works for your practice. Honoring the Past, Leading the Future Reflecting on two decades of leadership, a lasting family legacy, & looking ahead with President Lori Burkhart Isbell

Written By DAWN KAHL 4 // BURKHART DENTAL SUPPLY

President Lori Burkhart Isbell

When talking to Lori Burkhart Isbell about serving as President of the company that has been in her family for generations, the first thing she mentions is not her family, but the people of Burkhart Dental Supply.

“The heartbeat of this company is because of the individual & their passion.”

strong,

people

For her, Burkhart is all the personalities who have helped to shape the whole organization, the Associates with a sense of ownership, and those who are always serving others. Together, they define

Burkhart’s culture. She believes that culture shows up in the way Burkhart works with customers. “We’re always looking to do what we can to truly help them, whether it makes us a sale or not,” Lori says. “And I’m really proud of that.”

Twenty Years at the Helm In 2026, Lori Burkhart Isbell celebrated 20 years of service as the President of Burkhart Dental Supply. She took over the business from her father, Perry Burkhart, Jr., making her the fifth generation in the family to run the company founded by William E. Burkhart, DDS, back in 1888. Originally founded as Tacoma Dental Depot, William’s mission as a dentist was to provide dentists with the finest tools and education on the best way to care for their patients. That family legacy that has carried forward through

five generations, and Burkhart Dental Supply has grown into a full-service dental supply company with 19 branch locations and two distribution centers. In addition to supplies, Burkhart also offers equipment and technology, service and repair, practice consulting, and office planning and design. For Lori, the family legacy has never felt like a weight she was expected to carry. Growing up, she says, business lessons were woven naturally into family life, often in ways she did not fully recognize at the time. But there was no heavy expectation that she would join the company, or lead it. Before entering the business, Lori built a career in education. “I never felt pressure to come into the business at all, which was just lovely. My dad mentioned it once or twice when I was younger, certain ways I could get into the business,” she recalls. “When I was interested, then he certainly turned his full attention to that and was excited and supported me. It was really wonderful.” Once she joined the company, she started in Customer Service, then took on roles as Branch Manager and, for several years, as a Sales Account J

Manager before taking over from her father. Although there had been a gradual transition over two years before Perry Jr. fully stepped down, when Lori fully took over as President in 2006, the ride was anything but smooth. Less than 60 days into her new role, unexpected financial issues surfaced from the prior year-end close, affecting multiple areas of the business. “It definitely was not an experience of easing my way in,” Lori says. “I felt like I came in with my hair on fire.” That early challenge was a great proving ground. Over her tenure, Burkhart has faced its share of difficult moments, including financial pressures, marketplace shifts, the COVID pandemic, and a cyberattack. Through each one, Lori says she has seen the same quality emerge across the organization: resilience. She is proud of how each challenge has been faced. “All the different interesting things that we’ve come through as a company and just always finding our way through—that sense of resilience,” she says. “The other thing that I’m just really proud of is who we are as a company. And when I think about that, I think about the people I work with. They’re just amazing.”

One of her most recognizable habits is the walking meeting. Rather than always sitting across a desk, Lori often steps outside with colleagues to talk through ideas and decisions. “The conversation just feels like it evolves in a different way,” she says. “I can think better. And I have loved over the years meeting with people, especially in person, and walking together.” Her leadership style reflects that same attentiveness. Lori values leaders who are clear and assertive without being aggressive, who can communicate a vision while also noticing what each person or team needs to succeed. Some people need structure and accountability; others need the big picture and room to find their own way. Lori leans naturally toward the latter, but she also understands the importance of surrounding herself with people who bring complementary strengths. When it comes to decisions, Lori credits her father with helping her develop business judgment: weighing many factors, knowing when to seek outside wisdom, and continuing the process until the right answer becomes clear. Across the two decades, one philosophy has remained central: look for the win-win. Whether working with customers, manufacturers, or Associates, Lori sees mutual benefit as essential to how Burkhart does business. “It feels like a really important part of the philosophy of the business,” she says.

Moving Forward As she looks ahead to the next twenty years, Lori is intentional about the next generation, but not in a pressure-driven way. She does not feel the need to push her children, nieces, nephews, or other family members toward the company. Instead, she looks for small, meaningful opportunities to build business acumen and pride in the company. “I’m pretty big on teaching the next generation, how do you become a good business owner?” she says. “Trying for the next generation to create a sense of ownership, a sense of pride, but also working hard just to find those little opportunities to help them

really respect our employees, honestly. That’s an important part of what I want to pass on.” The dental industry will continue to change. Lori expects further consolidation, pressure on traditional margins, and greater demand for service, consulting, equipment expertise, and efficient solutions. As products, manufacturers, and supply chains evolve, she sees an ongoing need for companies in Burkhart’s space to be more efficient and more valuable to customers. For Burkhart, that means continuing to pair personal touch with stronger technology. Lori is energized by the possibility of tools and systems that could help dental practices run more efficiently while preserving the human relationships that have always mattered most. “I really see us moving forward with personal touch and [practice] help and really strengthening our technology,” she says. “I’m excited to think about what technology could look like that could really be a help to our customers, beyond the typical things that you see out there right now.” Looking to the future, Lori does not frame success as a fixed destination 20 years away. Instead, she focuses on doing the right things today: serving people well, treating them right, facing current challenges, and staying ready for the opportunities ahead. “When I say doing the right things, from a human perspective,” explains Lori, “What are our chances to serve, and how do we treat people right, and how do we do the right things in different situations?” After 20 years as President, Lori’s leadership is both deeply personal and forward-looking. She honors the generations before her not by standing still, but by continuing to steward a company that values people, adapts to change, and keeps looking for better ways to serve. “I truly do enjoy getting to know people and what they’re experiencing, it does matter to me. It is important whether it’s work-related or not. I just believe in and love what we do.”

“I used to use Burkhart, and then I thought, well, I’m going to try to do this myself through some secondary, tertiary websites, and it made a lot of extra work.” He has found that the Supply Savings Guarantee program has saved his office time, money, and more. “I had a Burkhart rep come in and offer me a deal to say, ‘Hey, I can beat your prices, even on all this extra work you’re doing, and not only that, I’ll show up and do some of the ordering for you.’ So, I took his deal and I ran with it. One feature of the program Dr. Pringle appreciates is the service offered through the Practice Support Team.

He recommends the Supply Savings Program to other offices. “I’m a happy Burkhart customer,

and I think there’s a lot of people out there who are trying to do too much work themselves when they could delegate and have the supplier do some of the work for them and still end up paying prices that are better or equivalent to the prices you’re paying while doing all the searching.”

A Front Office Success Challenge Practices that strengthen systems while embracing modern tools & workflows are seeing stronger collections, improved efficiency, & higher patient satisfaction.

Written By BURKHART’S PRACTICE SUPPORT TEAM

What’s Changing in Today’s Front Office Front offices are under more pressure than ever, and a high-performing front office is no longer just the first impression of your dental practice: it’s the engine that drives patient experience, operation flow, and financial success. Patients now expect seamless digital experiences—online scheduling, realtime communication, and transparent financial conversations—as they do in other industries. All while insurance verification, claim denials, and reimbursement challenges continue to increase the administrative burden.

As practices adapt, three key trends are emerging: •

Automation and AI-assisted systems help teams manage high call volumes, scheduling, and verification processes more efficiently.

•

Real-time insurance verification is becoming a critical need to reduce delays and billing errors.

•

Patients expect upfront financial clarity and flexible payment options before committing to care.

A Herd of Unicorns A New Location for BridgeCreek Prosthetic Dentistry Written By DAWN KAHL

These four Denver prosthodontists provide

individualized,

fee-for-service care for complex cases in a 2-location practice emphasizing partner collaboration and patient education.

At the new Glendale location of BridgeCreek Prosthetic Dentistry, you can see the entire Front Range of the Southern Rocky Mountains of Colorado through the large picture windows. The 7 new A-dec operatories provide much-needed space for a growing practice. Previously operating a location from a small 4-operatory space in an old building, the elevators didn't always work, and the equipment needed updating. The crisp, clean, and considered aesthetics of the new office fit the quality of their care, says Dr. Aaron Bellis, one of 4 prosthodontists in the practice. Even the patients have remarked on it. “I had patients who had seen the old Cherry Creek location, and when the build-up happened, they're like, ‘Oh, you're in a space that matches actually what your dentistry is,’’ he says. But this isn't just a bigger, prettier clinic. It matches the philosophy of the group, a team of highly trained, specialized doctors who understand the efficacy of partnership and who care deeply about educating their patients to empower them with choice. “We joke and say to our patients that we haven't seen a lot of unicorns, but if you take most of our patients and you put them in other practices, they are unicorns, and we just happen to have a whole herd of them, and that's what we like,” notes Dr. Dennis Waguespack.

“We love the challenge of it. It's not easy… It's difficult dentistry, but we pride ourselves on being able to accomplish those really complex problems with our other specialists.” 22 // BURKHART DENTAL SUPPLY

Dr. Brian Butler was the first of the four current prosthodontists to join BridgeCreek, buying half of the practice from the original owner, Gary Hoffman, in '03 and becoming a partner in 2006. Dr. Dennis Waguespack joined in 2013 and bought Dr. Hoffman’s share. When Dr. Hoffman retired in 2020, Dr. Aaron Bellis, a maxillofacial prosthodontist, joined and became a partner in 2023. Last July, the final puzzle piece fell into place when Dr. Eva Otgonbayar, the first female prosthodontist of the practice, joined, bringing digital training to the group. All four doctors are focused on complex, highly individualized restorative and prosthodontic care - from full-mouth reconstructions and implant-supported restorations to maxillofacial prosthetics for oncology and other medically complex patients. The practice is fee-forservice with no insurance contracts.

orthodontists, endodontists, pediatric dentists, maxillofacial and head and neck surgeons, and ENTs. They also offer family dentistry, performing regular fillings, crowns, and hygiene for patients of record. Dr. Waguespack explains that another core component of the practice philosophy is patient education. “We are not a practice that sets a production goal for the day. We don't have production incentives for any employee, including hygienists. The patients get what the patients need, but ultimately, it's their decision.” Education is hardwired into the BridgeCreek philosophy: it's their job to diagnose the problems, thoroughly teach the patient about the different solutions, and outline the pros and cons of each. This includes whether that solution is cost-effective for

“We want to provide individual elite care for patientspecific problems that are not dictated by the insurance reach,” explains Dr. Waguespack. “We want our patients to come in the door, and we'll build a cookie-cutter for them. It's not that we're going to fit them into a barrel. It's individualized.” The doctors have tailored it as a specialty practice and get many referrals from other dentists. They work closely with other specialties, providing comprehensive interdisciplinary care for patients, so they work with periodontists, oral surgeons,

CATALYST MAGAZINE // Q4 2026 // 25

the patient. The practice believes that fully educating patients and not forcing solutions on them are part of what makes them respected in the dental community. They also don't do what other specialists are specifically trained to do: surgery is performed by oral surgeons and periodontists. Periodontists handle periodontal therapy. Implants, orthodontics, and pediatric cases go to the corresponding specialists, and maxillofacial cases not handled by Dr. Bellis are referred to ENT/head-and-neck teams. They prefer to follow the medicine model to provide patients with an experience that delivers specific, individualized outcomes.

“I think what sets our specialty apart is we have that knowledge & toolbox in our practice that we can implement it to whatever out-of -the-box case that comes through our door”, says Dr. Otgonbayar. This method parallels nicely with their team approach. In their new location, the four doctors share an office with four desks, allowing for constant case discussion and collaboration. Dr. Butler likens it to being back in residency, with several specialties in the same building, learning from each other, and the ability to bring complex problems to each other, so multiple minds can attack the same issue. In doing so, both internally and in the close working relationships they share with all their specialists, they can take a truly interdisciplinary approach, which ultimately is better for their patients.

26 // BURKHART DENTAL SUPPLY

“I think a lot of dentists, especially right out of school, get out in practice and they feel isolated”, observes Dr. Butler. “They don't have that team approach or camaraderie to get help anymore, and so, especially being in a specialty like we're in, having that ability to run it by each other and our other specialists is another thing that sets us apart and makes us unique.” One of the things they love to do is teach, and they say they always have an open-door policy for local dentists seeking help, from complex cases to stubborn screw removals. They have a long tradition of study clubs and case reviews – ones that started with using light boxes in restaurants and have now moved to modern digital meetings, all of which add to the strength of their referral community. BridgeCreek Prosthetics' new Glendale office opened in July 2024, replacing and expanding its Cherry Creek location, and was purposely designed to support the four prosthodontists and a largely referral-based patient population that travels from across Colorado and neighboring states, including Wyoming, Nebraska, Kansas, and New Mexico. The build was carefully thought out. The practice invested over a year in planning and design before construction began, working closely with architect Bloom Studio, A-dec, and the Burkhart team. Burkhart and A-dec flew the team to A-dec's Nashville facility, a crucial step in the decision-making process. "I think for all of us it was eye-opening when you actually can move the wall, see the different operatories as you're trying to build your design with an architect," recalls Dr. Butler. "It really helped seeing that in person live." The detailed planning paid off during construction, resulting in a build with almost no issues. “The buildout went great,” says Burkhart Equipment Specialist Stan Wiening. “We used one of our local dental contractors, everything was on schedule, everything was on budget. They have other offices, so they were

pretty accessible to use their other offices and make sure that this one was installed correctly before they did any closing of anything or moving over. Having that contingency plan where they had other offices was paramount in this install,” Dr. Butler agrees, adding,

“I think having that big team group approach & bouncing all that off each other really made it as successful as it did.”

The result is a stunning new office that pleases the ‘herd of unicorns’ and doctors both. “I think patients are blown away more than I would have expected,” says Dr. Waguespack, explaining that it also improves their care. “I think that most of the patients appreciate how clean and thought-out it is, and how we expose the technology we have in front of them. I think it allows us to be more active, have them be a more active participant in that education process for the new patients.”

Much credit is given to BridgeCreek's long-time Burkhart Service Technician, Karl Casebeer, with his guidance during construction. “He had a lot of great input through the actual construction process,” says Dr. Waguespack, explaining that those things were invaluable. “Those are things you just don't know, just like us. It's like a non-dentist builds a handpiece and gives it to a dentist, and you give us about 12 seconds, and we're going to tell you why it's not going to work, you know? Because that's what we do, and that's what you guys do, and I think that's the hidden value in what we receive from Burkhart.” Their technology is fully integrated but restrained. Digital scanners, ExoCAD software, and SprintRay 3D printers support models, night guards, provisional restorations, and patient education, while laboratory partnerships provide capabilities that are not currently cost-effective to keep in-house, such as mills and certain printers. Due to their heavy reliance on intraoral scanners, they deliberately have multiple as intentional redundancy. The team preferred to focus on durable infrastructure such as chairs, operatories, and handpieces versus chasing every rapidly obsoleting digital gadget.

Serving Big-City Dentistry in a

Small Town Morgan Family Dental Written By DAWN KAHL

Morgan Family Dental's new location was built with Burkhart from the ground up.

Morgan Family Dental operated for thirteen years out of Rochester, Washington with only 3 operatories in a 920-square-foot space. Cramped, filled with lab equipment, and short on windows, the lab room doubled as the staff break room.

What was once fine for a dentist starting on his own and building a practice became too small, especially after owner Dr. Nathan Morgan purchased 2 Solea CO2 lasers and began regularly implementing anesthesia-free dentistry. Moving the lasers in and out of the operatories made space an even bigger issue. Growing up in Morton, Washington, Dr. Nathan Morgan knows small-town life. Although his mother often encouraged him to become a dentist, his career initially took a different path. He spent several years working in Washington’s sawmills. After a job loss and remembering his mother's words, he began volunteering as a sterile technician at a dentist's office for a few months to learn about dentistry. It didn’t take long for Dr. Morgan to discover a passion for the work, and his experience in the timber industry qualified him for a retraining program at a local community college. He earned his dental degree at the University of Washington, where he regularly attended and oversaw the setup of Burkhart-sponsored lunch-and-learn events, which led him to become a Burkhart customer when he started his own practice. With Burkhart's help, he set up that first small office in 2012.

“We needed more space to serve the community that serves us…I want to keep doing my best for the community, and that’s being able to see people that need to be seen. We have to have space for that.”

Despite Dr. Morgan beginning his search for land in 2014 to build a new practice, a series of issues, including deals that fell through and the COVID pandemic, meant that he couldn’t break ground on his new location until 2022. However, plans were being developed during that time. Dr. Morgan knew what he wanted, and his office was really built with his community in mind. The first thing he insisted upon was space. “We

He used an A-dec designer, even though he already had an idea of what he wanted the building to look like. He faced some resistance in his push for space, not only in the operatories, but in the hallways and staff areas. A place he and his staff could actually work in and be comfortable. He was told those sizes weren’t normally done. “I wanted the rooms bigger. People don't really do that. And I said, well, we do. So, it was a lot of back-and-forth. I think Burkhart really did help

quite a bit with getting the plans ready.” The new Morgan Family Dental office opened in October of 2025, fulfilling the brief of being a family-focused dental practice with modern touches. The new space, occupying half of a brandnew building, is 4000 square feet, giving them

more than four times the size of the previous office. The nine new operatories, each filled with light from large windows, are almost 12 x 12 feet wide, leaving plenty of room for his lasers and equipment. Each operatory has new A-dec chairs and cabinetry. Nitrous is now plumbed and integrated into every room, instead of having to wheel in the old nitrous cart that was falling apart. The upgraded layout has improved efficiency behind the scenes. A dedicated 'get-ready' station in a new, centralized sterilization area keeps instruments and supplies organized, creating a smoother workflow for the team. Unlike the previous office, where patients could easily access or lean against the sterilization center, the new design keeps the area more secure. The new facility has also brought notable benefits for the team, keeping team morale high. New staff benefits include employee lockers, a dedicated changing room, a private staff bathroom, and even an on-site washer and dryer. It was important to Dr. Morgan to make sure he took care of his staff. “I knew I wanted to be in a larger space and have more room for people to be walking around,” he explains. “A place that we can actually work in and be comfortable.” Patients have embraced the new office, often commenting on its bright and open atmosphere. The expanded space feels cleaner, more comfortable, and more home-like, with plenty of room for patients and staff to move freely.

Patients especially appreciate the spacious hallways and treatment areas. The five-foot-wide corridors exceed ADA requirements, making it easy for wheelchair users to navigate comfortably and for patients and team members to pass one another. In fact, Dr. Morgan notes that the entire footprint of his previous office was roughly the same size as the staff breakroom in the new facility.

Beyond the technology and services, Dr. Morgan's commitment to Rochester is deeply personal. “We like being here in Rochester. I love my patients, and I love my staff, and they're pretty great. I just like being able to give back to them.”

For Dr. Morgan, patient care is at the heart of everything he does. To better serve his Rochester community, he has invested in a wide range of advanced dental technologies, including laser dentistry, CEREC same-day crowns, intraoral cameras, and CBCT imaging. The practice is committed to being a small-town practice with large-town technology.

“We're a small town, so we don't have a lot of availability for people to just go somewhere else,” said Dr. Morgan. “We try to serve the community the best we can and offer as many things as we can.”

With that philosophy in mind, Dr. Morgan performs as much dentistry in-house as possible, referring patients only for highly complex procedures or orthodontic treatment. Thanks to the Solea lasers, the practice can perform many procedures without anesthesia, including laser fillings, and the CEREC technology enables same-day crowns. The office's CBCT imaging system also supports guided implant restorations.

Important Safety Information

PART# 72721816

Care should be taken to avoid accidental intravascular injection, which may be associated with convulsions followed by coma and respiratory arrest. Local anesthetic solutions that contain a vasoconstrictor should be used cautiously, especially in patients with impaired cardiovascular function or vascular disease. Administration of Burkhart Dental Anesthetic results in a 3 to 5-fold increase in plasma epinephrine concentrations compared to baseline. However, in healthy adults, it does not appear to be associated with marked increases in blood pressure or heart rate, except in the case of accidental intravascular injection. The most common adverse reactions (incidence >2%) are headache and pain. Inform patients in advance of the possibility of temporary loss of sensation and muscle function following infiltration and nerve block injections. Instruct patients not to eat or drink until normal sensation returns.

1. The American Heart Association (AHA) recommends using the lowest possible quantity of epinephrine (Kaplan EL ed. Cardiovascular disease in dental practice. Dallas, TX: American Heart Association, 1986)
