Giving Back Burkhart was a proud sponsor of Lowrance Dental’s 2023 “D-Day for V-Day” Charity Event

Burkhart partnered with Lowrance Dental for their annual Veteran’s Day charity event serving veterans of North Texas.

In 2017 Dr. Stan Lowrance started offering a nocost dental day for veterans and has continued the tradition annually.

Dr. Stan and his daughter Dr. Shanae Lowrance, as well as a group of volunteers comprised of dentists, assistants, and hygienists, donate a full-day dental clinic each year.

Treatment of each veteran consists of an exam, followed by a cleaning and a first-line dental procedure, if necessary, such as a filling or extraction. They also provide follow-up services as needed.

In addition, they accept donations to ‘sponsor’ a veteran – a gift of $40 allows a veteran to receive an Oral-B Electric toothbrush, Pro-Health mouthwash, toothpaste, floss picks, and a shirt.

Lowrance Dental works in partnership with the Rockwall Terry Fisher American Legion Post 117 to help schedule the veterans and has a variety of local sponsors. Burkhart has been a sponsor since 2018.

Service Technician Dustin Kile was on-site to assist and brought Burkhart loaner sterilizers and Cavitrons for use during the day, enabling the practice to treat a whopping 84 veterans this year, including some who served in WWII.

Dr. Kasey Gillespie had been practicing dentistry in Silverdale, Washington for several years when he started thinking about expanding his practice.

When he brought it up at some dental society meeting, this started a friendly argument among his peers, almost as a game: “If we all went to the same dental supplier, who would we choose? And there was almost going to be a fight if we didn’t choose Burkhart for no other reason than Bill, I think.” The Bill in question? Burkhart’s Account Manager Bill Melius.

“Bill is somewhat of a legend around here,” says Dr. Gillespie.

So once Dr. Gillespie started mentioning building out the practice, Bill was quick to act. “Bill offered his services to help and make sure I had everything I needed, which he’s always done.”

“They just gave me so

much help and support ; it just was kind of natural to continue to expand by adding the four chairs”.

With their support, the expansion process went smoothly. “During the process, I had an…existing chair that needed service. So that was just a phone call to the service department. And they were able to come in and keep us running with our existing equipment…and then, as we got towards the end, there was a whole bunch of supplies, all of a sudden, (that) we needed…(Burkhart) people got them to me the very next day, even big equipment,

things like the Nomad, or the lead apron, or a bunch of covers for the light handles. We didn’t miss a beat in our production.”

Dr. Gillespie says he probably wouldn’t have done it quite as soon without Burkhart as the catalyst for change. “If you look at the scientific term for a catalyst – a catalyst is not present in the initial products or the final products. It’s the facilitator between the reaction, right? And so, I would say that’s exactly what Burkhart was. You know, Burkhart is not in our office as our team, per se, every day. But as soon as you need them, they’re there to facilitate the whole transition.”

Another reason for the expansion was a firm belief in investing in products to make a dental office run as smoothly as possible. Dr. Gillespie’s background in engineering helped him understand that things like room design, chair design, and staying on top of the newest technologies would help elevate dental work.

“If you have that good foundation,then it sets you up for that next level of dental quality.”

“A Dental Practice needs to be a finely tuned machine that you show up, take good care of the patient, and then leave. And when you start adding distractions of broken chairs or broken equipment, then it just reduces from the overall quality of your dentistry.”

If you're searching for exceptional handpiece repair services, you don't have to look any further than the Burkhart Handpiece Repair Center (HRC). Housed in a corner of Burkhart's corporate building, the HRC is staffed by a team of skilled technicians passionate about providing quality repair work.

Upon entering the HRC, you’ll find an eclectic mix of dental equipment, including a Statclave G4 and Statim 2000 for sterilization, a Midmark ultrasonic bath, a Dremel with cleaning brushes, and a Barr Instruments Steamer for cleaning, all sitting along a tidy countertop. Nearby, desktops with trays of tiny handpiece parts are being meticulously repaired. Steel racks occupy the center of the room, equipped with a well-organized work ticket system, and rows of small, labeled drawers filled with handpiece parts are neatly arranged by vendor along one wall.

The Handpiece Repair Center's team is comprised of specially-trained technicians dedicated to ensuring that your handpieces are repaired to the highest standards. "We want to make sure the quality of your repair is as close to brand new as we can get," says Lawrence Calbert, an HRC Technician. To achieve this, the team works closely with manufacturing partners to ensure they have the proper training and tools to repair your handpiece to the manufacturer's specifications.

The HRC also offers a wide variety of OEM (original equipment manufacturer) and non-OEM repair parts options, which is a rarity in the industry.

"Normally, you can either send your handpiece to the manufacturer to get it repaired with those manufactured parts or send it to a repair house to have it repaired with non-OEM parts. Here, we're able to offer both instead of just one," explains Ian Hanson, HRC Technician.

Thanks to the training and parts available onsite, the HRC is proud to offer a quick turnaround time. "The turnaround time for handpiece repair, on average, is about five days from when we first receive your package to when we would expect to be able to ship it back out… that's roughly how long it takes for dealers to get your handpiece to the manufacturer. So, in the time they take to get it to the manufacturer to ask them to repair it, we're giving it back to you in the mail," says Lawrence.

The process begins with custom Burkhart HRC Boxes, which include packing foam to protect your handpiece. Once the enclosed form is filled out, the box can be shipped using the provided prepaid shipping label. The HRC team will take care of the rest.

Once the handpiece arrives, it is sterilized and evaluated, and an estimate is created unless marked pre-approved on the form. After the handpiece repair has been approved, the handpiece is disassembled completely, internally cleaned, parts replaced as needed, and thoroughly tested.

Ian explains that he loves the diversity of the handpieces they work on. "We are receiving everything from W&H to NSK handpieces and everything in between. It's always a new experience every day of what's going to be in those boxes."

Dr. Paul Kahlon and Dr. Sonu Lamba of Stellar Kids Dentistry and Stellar Family Orthodontics discuss how their long-standing partnership with Burkhart Dental Supply has helped them grow their practice to include multiple pediatric dental and orthodontic offices.

“My kids absolutely love going to the dentist,” says Andrea, a Burkhart Associate. They have been going to Stellar Kids Dentistry since the oldest, Joey, got his first tooth.

It might be the small door he gets to go through when his name is called. It might be the kid-friendly movie playing on the TV overhead while he is in the dental chair. Or it could be the general warmth and charm that practically emanates from doctors Paul Kahlon and Sonu Lamba, owners of Stellar Kids Dentistry and Stellar Family Orthodontics.

We had the chance to interview them about their growing practices and the secret to their success.

During our visit with them, it became immediately apparent that they love what they do.

They started their first practice in Mukilteo, Washington more than a decade ago.

"We've been with Burkhart since the beginning of our practice over 11 years ago," says Dr. Paul.

“Our rep Steve was so involved in designing our first office, and Burkhart has equipped all of our locations since.” They credit Steve with an impressive level of customer service. “He wasn't just interested in supplying us with the equipment… he was in there with a design… and we hadn’t even committed to work with him.”

“If something breaks that could impact patient care, Burkhart will respond right away to fix it.” With Burkhart's partnership and support, Drs. Paul and Lamba have successfully expanded their practice to its current size. “Burkhart allows us to focus on taking care of our patients and staff,” says Dr. Paul.

Over the last eleven years, the business has gradually expanded to include 3 pediatric dental offices and 2 orthodontic offices, the newest of which opened in May of 2023 in Mukilteo.

“For us, It's all about that patient experience and that parent experience. And that really matters to us. So, we like to have time for all our managers and our admin to be able to relate to parents, connect with them on a one-to-one level,” says Dr. Lamba.

To accomplish this, they opened a Patient Support Center in order to have centralized services for billing and scheduling to support all their locations.

The team at Stellar are so focused on creating an inviting space that they put incredible intention and thought into all aspects of the designs of their offices.

They started by creating spaces with colorful, whimsical designs. From the brightly colored aliens on the windows at their Mill Creek location to a reception area with planets on the rug and stars on the lights at Everett, they wanted to make sure kids feel welcome there, long into their teen years.

“Our offices are not sort of nursery-ish, or toy-boxy; they’re fun and colorful, but one where we can retain patients into their adolescence and teen years.”

Their largest office also has a semi-private and private operatory for kids who need a quieter, calmer environment.

Danny Pecka is not a big awards guy.

It’s not what drives him. So, it was a big surprise when his name was announced for the Perry Burkhart, Jr. Award of Excellence.

“I definitely appreciate any award or even any encouragement that I get from any aspect of life, not just my job. But that’s an award that means more to me by far than any sales number that I’ve hit or qualifying mark on paper, because …

I’ve always enjoyed that there is a value to those qualities that Perry (Burkhart) showed and that Lori (Burkhart) continues to show.”

“If you’re doing it for the recognition, I don’t think that exemplifies the character of the award. So it meant a ton. Because I do spend a lot of time and energy and emotion on my clients, (and) Burkhart in general.”

His dedication to helping them along their path at Burkhart is 2nd to none, and he truly is a servant leader in his dedication to this group. He is always willing to step up to the plate to help coach them on how to use Burkhart software, approach clients, compare products, or just handle the mental load when they’ve had a hard day. Danny is also leading the new Account Manager Resource Group, which is a chance for them all to connect quarterly and share wins and challenges.

At the end of the day, Danny was trained as a teacher, and he has that teaching compassion. He truly cares for these individuals, just as Perry did when he was running the company. Danny is the same type of person, and he does all of this while working hard in his territory and gaining Platinumlevel success. This award is fitting for someone who exemplifies our values as a company: Integrity, Knowledge, Client Success!”

As Danny says, “If I can invest two hours or so a week or whatever the number is into multiple people and make them 50% or 20% more effective, that impact on the business side I think is wild…

It is a little bit of time for people that need a little bit of time is wildly more beneficial for them and the company, then, oh, I need to go to 12 more offices this week…and maybe that’s not the right way to think. But I do think that way. And I think it’s part of the reason I do it, but I also just love seeing people win.”
