2024 Burke Museum Report to the Community

2024 REPORT TO THE COMMUNITY

WE’RE RESOURCEFUL HERE AT THE BURKE.

Staff from around the building regularly amaze me with their creative solutions to some pretty specific problems. Did you know that you can make a last-minute gravity well out of a hula hoop and a piece of spandex? Or that pointy, flexible porcupine quills are a favorite tool for working with the smallest fossils under a microscope?

We’re also full of resources. Tiny tissue samples, bird wings, and baskets fill cabinets, shelves, and deep freezers. At the other end of the scale, full-size canoes and massive dinosaur jaws set the scene in exhibit spaces. Our collections contain vast stores of scientific and cultural knowledge and artistry and offer infinite possibilities and stories.

But our greatest resource is our community. As you’ll see in this report to the community, friends and supporters — like you! — generously provide time, enthusiasm, and countless other contributions that make the work of the museum possible and meaningful. Each year, your gifts allow us to meet essential community needs related to our mission — creating valuable opportunities for learning, inspiration, joy, and healing. Thank you!

VALUING OUR COMMUNITY

THOUGHTS FROM OUR BOARDS

Native American Advisory Board

The Burke is a shared resource for our diverse communities. We rely on the knowledge, innovation, history, and beauty that the scientific and cultural collections carry to inspire and inform the work of caring for our people and shaping a healthy future for us all. Thank you for the support that made these efforts possible again this year.

— Native American Advisory Board

Burke Museum Association

The Burke community is rich with talent. Staff, volunteers, and supporters all bring their collective best and, together, create a remarkable community where science, art, and culture thrive. We feel honored to work alongside the NAAB, and with the university and our diverse communities, to sustain the exciting programming, research, and collections work of the Burke, Washington’s official state museum. This past year, events like Behindthe-Scenes member night, Burke in Bloom spring fundraiser, “On Our Terms” film screening, and monthly Fossil Finders family programs represented some of the many opportunities the museum offered to learn, be inspired, feel joy, and heal. Your contributions continue to be essential to our success — thank you for all you do.

EXPANDING ACCESS

FREE FIRST THURSDAY

The first Thursday of every month, admission to the museum is free for all. This day helps us meet our mission to care for and share natural history and culture collections with all people who have an interest in learning about the world around them.

Every first Thursday (and many other days!), our staff, students, and volunteers in the biology and fossil prep labs do their work in full view of visitors, offering unique opportunities for our guests to see how fossils and animal specimens are prepared, processed, and readied for research. Free First Thursday is supported by Made in Washington.

IN THE FOSSIL PREP LAB, there are countless fossils and new species being worked on behind the glass, but one of the most incredible discoveries this past year included what might be the small, articulated fish from the Hell Creek formation, found by chance mashed against a beautiful Triceratops skull.

IN THE BIOLOGY PREP LAB, the ornithology team worked on salvaged bird specimens from Singapore. From Oriental Pied Hornbills to Bluewinged Pittas, more than 40 birds were prepared and added to the museum’s collection! Mammal activity included preparing skulls from coyotes and raccoons recovered as part of a UW research project, and the herpetology (amphibians and reptiles) team prepared several large snakes from the Woodland Park Zoo.

13,530

FREE FIRST THURSDAY VISITORS

In FY24, the Burke welcomed representing 16% of all visitors.

“I loved seeing the work being done. It was like getting a special sneak peek behind the scenes. I wanted to watch all day long, to be honest.”

BROADENING HORIZONS

BURKE EDUCATION

Transportation comes up again and again as one of the biggest barriers for schools that are hoping to visit the museum for a field trip. In FY24, we piloted a transportation subsidy program, making it possible for students who might not otherwise have had access to the Burke, to visit the museum.

This was the case with a group of high school students from Eastern Washington.

While they qualified for full financial assistance for the field trip itself, the group still needed to provide its own transportation. But, when they found out last minute that they had lost their transportation funding, the field trip was put on hold.

Using state proviso funding, the Burke was able to subsidize their transportation costs, leading to a meaningful and enriching experience for the students — and their guardians. The museum hopes to be able to offer more of this support in the future.

“Your assistance in securing the grant from your museum was invaluable and made this field trip possible…We brought 26 students and six parents, all of whom had an unforgettable day filled with discovery and inspiration. The opportunity to engage with the museum’s collections in such an interactive and supportive environment was a highlight of their school year.”

CELEBRATING THE SALISH SEA

SPECIAL EXHIBITION AND PROGRAMS

In June 2023, the Burke debuted the special exhibition We Are Puget Sound in partnership with Braided River Publishing and Washington Conservation Action. Based upon the book of the same name, the exhibit provided an in-depth look at the wildlife and living cultures of the Salish Sea, helping visitors better understand — and build a stronger connection to — the region. Related activities included a family day, member preview, webinars featuring exhibit partners, and an evening event that brought many new visitors to the museum.

Of the 140 “Pints” tickets purchased, PINTS FOR PUGET SOUND, a 21+ public program, represented the museum’s return to evening programs tailored for younger adults. The event was tied to the exhibition and featured salmon-safe beer, trivia, arts activities, and the opportunity to roam the museum at night.

BRINGING SPIDERS OUT OF THE SHADOWS

STUDENT SPOTLIGHT

In 2024, Tianjia (Lily) Dong, a UW informatics and interdisciplinary honors student, collaborated with Melissa Frey, invertebrate zoology collections manager, and Rod Crawford, curatorial associate of arachnology, to bring the museum’s spider and harvestmen data to life for online visitors.

Using the digital tool that Lily created, visitors can now explore the data in our Arachnology Collection, visualizing where each species was collected, and access other data about each specimen. Lily, who graduated in 2024 and is now pursuing a master’s in digital studies at the University of Chicago, is inspired by the power of data and making connections across disciplines.

DID YOU KNOW?

Rod Crawford has been with the Burke for more than 50 years and, since 1971, has identified more than 600 spider species new to Washington state. As curatorial associate, he has built the most diverse and extensive arachnid collection (along with other invertebrates) in the Pacific Northwest. Boasting more than 214,000 spiders, the Burke’s collection is the second largest on the West Coast.

ENGAGING COMMUNITY

PUBLIC PROGRAMS

The Burke’s public programs provide an opportunity to dive deeper into a topic and hear directly from our researchers and scientists about their work.

DINO LECTURE

The Burke had the pleasure of hosting Dr. Jingmai O’Connor, associate curator of fossil reptiles at the Field Museum in Chicago, in June for a lecture titled “Winging It: The Evolutionary Journey of Birds.” In a lively and engaging presentation, O’Connor traced the evolution of these “living dinosaurs” over millions of years for a rapt audience that included a classroom of fourth graders from Cascadia Elementary School in Seattle.

DINO FEST

More than 1,700 people attended Dino Fest this year, a day full of microfossil sorting, dig pits, face painting, scientist showcases, and more!

ARCHAEOLOGY DAY

572 archaeology enthusiasts joined us for a day of fun for all ages on October 22, 2023. Participants learned about local archaeological sites, and field and lab techniques. Visitors were also treated to a demonstration of flintknapping (stone tool making). Interactive experiences included animal bone identification and shell sorting, among many other fun activities.

“That [lecture] was absolutely amazing! I was there with a group of fourth graders. It was past their bedtime, but they were riveted! Thank you!”

BOOK PARTIES

Two Burke Museum alumnae published books this past year in association with University of Washington Press. Dr. Elizabeth Nesbitt, former curator of invertebrate paleontology and micropaleontology, released “Spirit Whales & Sloth Tales” in November, and Dr. Robin Wright, former director of the Bill Holm Center for the Study of Northwest Native Art, released “Skidegate House Models” in May. Fans of both authors attended events at the Burke to hear the authors speak and snap up signed copies of the books.

ADDING TO THE COLLECTIONS

EXCITING NEW ITEMS

Every year, new items are added to the Burke collections. Here are just a few of the many interesting and important specimens and pieces from FY24.

HERITAGE: ARTS & CULTURES

Seattle 2020 Protests, Alison Bremner (Tlingit)

Acrylic on Paper, 30” x 22.5”

“Seattle 2020 Protests” joins other works at the Burke by artist Alison Bremner (Tlingit), including “Troll II.” Bremner is one of six co-curators of the Northwest Native Art gallery, a Bill Holm Center grantee, and a regular guest in the Artist Studio.

“In 2020, when the nation was deep in protests, I started this painting. At the time, a friend of mine was attending the Seattle protests. I heard this story of their experience; They are Indigenous. At the protest they saw another Indigenous person, a stranger. In a moment of solidarity and recognition, the stranger shared a cup of coffee with my friend. That is the story of the painting, with the cup of coffee being depicted as its own little being, and a burning cop car.”

PALEONTOLOGY

Ice Age baby tooth

This baby tooth — or what paleontologists would call a deciduous tooth — of a juvenile mastodon was found on the south end of Whidbey Island. It likely came from an animal that was less than three months old when it died. Like many specimens in our scientific collections, the tooth came to the museum by way of a member of the public who was beachcombing and reached out to the Burke with her find. The fossil contributes to the museum’s growing collection of Pleistocene, or Ice Age, megafauna from the Puget Sound region.

EXHIBITS

Large-format printer (AKA The Unpaid Printern)

Tucked away in the Exhibits shop is a new large-format printer, funded by a grant from the Hugh and Jane Ferguson Foundation. This behind-the-scenes gem is a work of art in its own way, and definitely a game changer: It offers the Exhibits team the freedom that comes with being able to print large-scale pieces inhouse. The printer also supports the museum’s broader goals related to sustainability by making it possible to easily and cost-effectively repurpose and recycle existing supplies and materials.

HERBARIUM

What’s up, Buttercup?

This year, the Burke Herbarium added Ranunculus basalticus (basalt buttercup) to the collections. While ranunculus flowers seem ubiquitous in the Pacific Northwest springtime, this cheerful yellow species’ limited geographic presence raises conservation concerns, as it has only been observed in South Central Washington. As a species new to Western science, the addition of this specimen highlights the role that the Burke plays in documenting and describing biodiversity in our state. Visit the buttercup and many other plants from the collections on the Herbarium website.

SHIFTING THE WAY WE WORK

BURKE EQUITY AND INCLUSION

“WIDEN THE FRAME” INSTALLATION

In February, we unveiled “Widen the Frame,” a Burke-created installation that encouraged visitors to reflect upon the role that museums play in shaping the perceptions of visitors and staff. Narrated by staff, students, and community partners, the project featured several examples of how the museum is shifting the way it works to be more accessible and inclusive.

“ON OUR TERMS” VIDEO SERIES

Co-produced by the Burke’s own Aaron McCanna and Timothy Kenney, “On Our Terms” explores the meaning behind commonly used equity and inclusion terms such as decolonization and consultation. Twelve people were included in the video who were asked the meaning of 10 words. Participants included staff, Burke Native American Advisory Board members, University of Washington students, and community partners.

Top row, left to right: Rachael Tamngin, Justice McNeeley, Polly Olsen, Mary Jane Topash, Eric Alipio Bottom row, left to right: Sarah Gould, Yellowash Washines, Roldy Ablao, Mercedes Luna, Muindi Fanuel Muindi, Jessica Rubenacker, Ron Eng

FRIENDS OF THE BURKE

DONOR IMPACT

SUPPORTERS MAKE A DIFFERENCE

Going above and beyond is the norm for our donors. One such person is Janice Anderson, whose support of the Burke stretches back to 2009. Since then, through memberships and gifts to the Annual Fund, she has contributed to an invaluable pool of unrestricted resources that makes programs of all types possible, and widely accessible. Thank you, Jan!

“Just a note to say how impressed I am with what you are doing at the Burke Museum. I first visited the museum with my class when I was in the fourth grade at Interlake Elementary. It was a classic building with some dark and scary corners. When I became a teacher, I brought my class of first graders to see the museum. It was wonderful and an excellent experience for them. Our focus at that time was natural history and Indigenous peoples. After returning to school for my master’s, I enjoyed the museum again. Now I watch the online classes, or talks. They are terrific. Thanks for all your good work.”

SUSTAINING THE BURKE

BURKE BOARDS

Native American Advisory Board

The NAAB was busy this past year developing policies related to a Mellon Foundation grant and consulting on collections to ensure that tribal perspectives were a part of the process. We’re thankful for the time that NAAB members give to the Burke, particularly their assistance with the challenging and ongoing process of defining what authentic organizational consultation looks like.

Burke Museum Association

In FY24, the Burke Museum Association continued to advance the mission of the museum in myriad ways — behind the scenes and out in the world — from necessary infrastructure like grant management software to community-growing events like the Burke in Bloom fundraising dinner celebration. We are grateful for the BMA’s commitment to strengthening the museum’s ties with our diverse communities and making it possible to raise the funds critical to the work taking place in every corner of the museum.
