INVISIBLE CITIES

Invisible cities, novel by Italo Calvino. It is a conversation between Marco polo and Kublai Khan, in which the former talks about the various cities and plac es he came across through his jour ney, and each city has it’s own unique characteristic that makes it different from each other.

Whether Armilla is like this beacuse it is unfinished, or because it has been demolished, or whether it is some en chantment or whim, no one knows. The fact is that the city has no walls, doors or ceiling, except pipes that rise vertically and spread horizontally which houses the homes of the residents that are the nymphs and naids. They are are young slender and not tall in stature, and they accustomed to travelling along the underground veins (pipes), which burst out into many fountains and streams. Armilla may have been built by humans as an offering to the nymphs and naids, to win their favor, due to the misuse of water.

The brief was to design the interiors for a couple working in the filmmaking and videography industry.

MANGROVE CONSERVATION

CENTRE

Mangroves play a cruticial part in the city of navi mumbai. They trap the silt and protect the shoreline. Apart from pro tecting land from destruction, mangroves play an important role in obstructing flood waters and storms. Similarly, they are home to several birds, animals and marine creatures.

Due to rapid urbanization and land reclamation the man grove coastline is under great threat.

AIM :- The aim of the centre is to create an awareness cen tre for the conservation and importance of the mangrovre coastline, creating a bridge between the people and the environment.

DESIGN

THE CONCEPT OF THE STRUCTURE BLEND ING INTO THE LANDSCAPE IS TRIED TO BE ACHEIVED BY THE MEANS OF LANDSCAPE MOUNDS WHICH ACT AS A CONTINUATION FROM THE STRUCTURE BLENDING INTO THE TRAILS AND LANDSCAPE FAETURES. THE MOUNDS ACT AS SEATING SPOTS AND VIEWING POINTS AS WELL.

SASSOON DOCKS

The design proposal for the fishing harbor at Sassoon Docks is multi-dimension al. It focuses not only on the modernization of the fishing industry but also on the requirement of the city for more open public spac es. The master planning aims to establish a fully integrated fishing harbor along with a few features for the public, but all of it is done by keeping in mind the cultures and practic es of the koli community, in order to serve as a well functioned out approach

PRESERVE :- Preserving of the cultures of the Kolis and people of the dock.

TECHNOLOGY :- There is a need for a certain amount of mechanization as it would make the work more efficient as well as attract the youth.

GROWTH :- With the use of technology, there will be growth and progress both in terms of the selling of fish and income generated.

WITH THE CURRENT TIMES, GATED COMMUNITIES ARE GAINING POPULARITY, RESULTING IN PEOPLE MAKING INFORMED CHOICES TO OPT FOR SUCH ALTERNATIVES. THE DESIGN PROPOSAL IS FOR PROVING A GATED COMMUNITY WITH SELF SUFFIECIENT SCALE FOR AMENITIES TO BE WITHIN THE COMPLEX, WITH WOULD BE LOCATED AT THE KHARGHAR NODE OF NAVI MUMBAI. IT ALSO CONSISTS OF COMMERCIAL, RECREATIONAL AND OTHER SUCH USES IN RESIDENTIAL HOMES, AND THUS PROVIDES A SHIFT IN THE THINKING OF MIXED LAND USE AS AN INEVITABLE OUTCOME. THE SITE IS 45 ACRES IN SIZE. IT IS ACCESIBLE FROM ROADS ON TWO SIDES, OF WHICH ONE SIDE OVERLOOKS THE CENTRAL PARK, A RECREATIONAL PARK IN KHARGHAR.

Brief Interpretation

Due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic public mobility has had a sharp decline. Nonetheless, public transportation is still a necessity for the common man and it's almost inevitable to avoid such a social interaction. Thus public transport is evidently one of the main hubs for the spread of the virus In such places, the norm of social distancing is tough to practice and hence it needs to be tackled delicately in terms of design along with the requisite SOPs. This will help create a relatively much safer and healthier place for daily commuters and flatten the curve of new cases.

About the Site

• The city of Panvel is uniquely located right at the junction of NH4, NH4B and NH17.

• It provides a good connection to the nearby cities i.e Mumbai and Pune as well as districts in Maharashtra like Satara, Raigad, Ratnagiri.

It also provides access to cities like Bengaluru and can even reach upto Chennai. The states of Gujarat and Rajasthan are also within it's reach.

• The MSRTC bus terminus of Panvel is located beside the NH48 Highway.

• It is considered to be a strategic terminus in the MSRTC unit of bus terminals.

It is an important terminus because it connects to many other terminus, being an important element to many regular commuters and long distance travellers as it provides fast and cheap transport to it users.

• It is also a very large terminus that caters to 2.52 lakh passengers and 4200 buses daily carrying each and every one to their desired location.

• Despite being a large and important terminus, it's condition isn't very good

Why We Selected Destination Bus Terminus?

This type of bus terminus is a connecting node between Urban-Rural, UrbanUrban, Rural-Rural areas.

The waiting period of buses as well as passengers at destination bus terminus is considerably more, which leads to more interaction that needs to be tackled during the covid-19 situation.

There are less amount of bus terminus specially designed for inter-state bus traveling.

Post pandemic, many families will be travelling back towards the city causing overcrowding at destination bus terminus.

Ticket Counter Evolution

• Intially circular platforms were thought for increasing the distance between the counters and the passengers, which followed the norms of social distancing.

Unfortunately, having circular platforms occupied a large amount of area creating dead spaces inbetween which would lead to an invasion of beggars Hence the concept of a circular platform wasn't taken forward.

• Furthermore, a continuous hedge was provided which had the risk of being miss used for seating.

• Finally the hedges were divided providing staggering and transperancy within queues.

Opportunity

• Able to provide large number of employment to potential stakeholders

• Proper land use.

• Less crowding, better passenger circulation.

Hygienic working conditions.

Incorporating landscape.

Site Justification

It is a major junction between Raigad, Mumbai, Pune, Satara, Ratnagiri, etc.

It is on the National Highway (NH-48), so it is used as a pause point by various commuters.

The existing site has been neglected for years and it is in complete rudimentary form

It is surrounded by essential facilities like a railway station, malls, hospitals, police stations, temples, etc making it a prime zone for commuters.

The existing site caters around 3000 commuters on a daily basis.

There are a wide range of buses ranging from - local, intercity, intracity, inter-state, tourist, etc.

The existing terminus nests around 135 buses

The Panvel railway station is in very close proximity to the site which makes it a junction between daily users as well as interstate users.

Canteen and stake holders

Majority users before travelling indulge in the activity of buying snacks, newspapers, magazines, medicines, accessories, etc.

Providing stakeholders near the waiting area and central courtyard acts as a well accessed point for the stakeholders.

Having a proper canteen area at any public space is an important requirement. Keeping the existing small canteen and covid situation in mind, a comparatively large area is provided for the food court.

A hexagonal table with transparent glass partitions restricts direct interaction but at the same time allows a visual connection between the users was the only feasible solution.

Ticket Counter Evolution

Intially circular platforms were thought for increasing the distance between the counters and the passengers, which followed the norms of social distancing.

Unfortunately, having circular platforms occupied a large amount of area creating dead spaces inbetween which would lead to an invasion of beggars Hence the concept of a circular platform wasn't taken forward.

Furthermore, a continuous hedge was provided which had the risk of being miss used for seating. Finally the hedges were divided providing staggering and transperancy within queues.

Design Evolution

concept of having a central courtyard surrounding pre-existing trees on site was taken into consideration.

Initially, having an enclosed space from all directions caused hindrance for air circulation and for the passengers.

Furthermore, the courtyard evolved into a semiopen space increasing the exposure to the trees on the site.

In the final stages of design evolution, interaction had largely increased which lead to complete transparency throughout the structure.

• The site originally faced issues of illegal encroachment by local stakeholders in dead spaces Hence, to avoid the formation of dead spaces, stakeholders have been given dedicated areas to put up stalls.

• The area has been designed in such a way that the passengers unknowingly travel through the stakeholders when they access the Autorickshaw stand through the drop off area.
