Save Energy and Reduce Your Carbon Footprint Whether you are driving, flying, turning on space heaters or air conditioners, our daily activities produce carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. Whenever you conserve energy by shutting off the power when an item is not in use, or increase the efficiency of an existing appliance, you are reducing your energy consumption, thereby reducing your carbon footprint.

Home Energy Saving Tips Energy-efficient improvements not only make your home more comfortable, they can yield long-term cost savings and can increase the value of your home. Our energy saving tips show you how easy it is to reduce your home’s energy use without sacrificing your comfort.

3 2 1 Heating Turn your thermostat down by 2 - 4˚ in the winter—try 68˚. At night or when you’re away, turn it down even further, to 55˚- 60˚ (a programmable thermostat can do this automatically.) For each degree you set back your thermostat you can save 25-30 gallons of heating oil per year. And if you have A/C, turn it up by 2 - 4˚ in the summer—or try using fans and opening windows at night.

Lighting Switch to CFL bulbs, which can last up to ten times longer than a normal bulb and use significantly less energy. (A single 20 to 25-watt energy-saving bulb provides as much light as a 100-watt ordinary bulb.) Each CFL can save you over $13 a year. Plus there are now styles, shapes and sizes for every socket in your house!

Laundry Wash your clothes in full loads using cold water, and hang clothes to dry whenever possible. Just by running your dryer half as many times each week you’ll save an average of $32 a year.

4 Refrigeration Unplug that extra fridge or freezer! It could be costing you up to $160 a year. And use your main fridge wisely: keep it full, but not overcrowded; limit opening the door; and repair leaky gaskets. When you’re in the market for a new fridge, check the sticker to make sure it’s EnERgy STAR rated and one of the most efficient models available.

Breakout of how we typically use energy in our homes Water Heating: 13%

5 Phantom Load Smart Strip power strips are a new technology that can help reduce phantom load by turning devices on and off automatically, helping you save money on your electric bills. The red outlets always have power for routers, clocks, answering machines or cable boxes.

6 Water Heating Most Americans have conventional water heaters that are barely more efficient than ones sold 20 years ago. Today’s new EnERgy STAR qualified water heaters include smart design enhancements that offer significant improvements in efficiency and performance. Depending on the technology you choose, you can cut your water heating costs in half!

Space Heating: 34%

Electric A/C: 11%

Refrigerator: 8%

7 Weatherization Insulate your roof to at least R-49*, and seal all openings around doors and windows. This could cut your home heating costs by 25%. *R value insulation ratings are used to measure insulation’s ability to resist heat flow. The higher the R value, the more effective it is. Insulation for homes should be purchased based on its R value, not thickness or weight.

Appliances and Lighting: 34%

8 Water Usage Take showers—a bath consumes 5 times more hot water—using a low-flow showerhead. you’ll reduce hot water use and cut water costs by 10% to 16% without affecting comfort.

9 Cooling EnERgy STAR qualified room air conditioners use at least 10% less energy than conventional models. you may also be interested to know that many people buy an air conditioner that is too large. EnERgy STAR suggests making sure your unit is properly sized.

10 Savings Did you know that the average home spends about $2,200 on energy bills every year? Change to appliances that are EnERgy STAR qualified, and you can save $75 a year in energy costs, while helping the environment.

Knowles Industrial Services Corporation is a specialty repair contractor that delivers services, products, systems and technologies that repair, protect and strengthen concrete, steel and masonry structures. They turned to Burgess for a coherent presentation of their wide range of services, from shotcrete and gunnite to pressure grouting and floor coverings. Our pocket folder with inserts used the theme, “KNOWLES KNOWS,” as an entree to convey their expertise across all services. When Knowles expanded into masonry repair for historic renovation projects in 2010, we developed a new insert and complementary ad for targeted publications.

KNOWLES KNOWS BROWNSTONE RESTORATION

Preserving history with exceptional GRACE Restoring the facade was one of the biggest challenges in transforming the neglected Chestnut Street Church into one of Portland’s most stylish new restaurants, Grace. Fortunately, the owners found a partner with the necessary expertise right here in Greater Portland: Knowles Industrial Services Corporation. Knowles proposed restoring rather than replacing the severely damaged Portland Brownstone as a far more cost-effective and environmentally responsible approach. Our specialists carefully prepared the damaged stone, applied a precisely matched Cathedral Stone Repair Mortar, and skillfully sculpted it to replicate the original profile. Riley Medical (acquired by Symmetry Medical Inc.) manufactures a full line of standard and custom high-tech plastic cases and trays designed to withstand the high temperatures required to sterilize surgical instruments in hospital autoclaves and other systems. Burgess created a system of pocket folder and inserts that intelligently organized the complex range of products and, using high-end photography, conveyed their extremely high quality.

WSI Group (originally Wood Structures, Inc.) was a leading manufacturer of pre-fabricated trusses and a distributor of other engineered wood products. Burgess created a variety of brochures and mailers that graphically and verbally positioned WSI as On the cutting edge of truss design, while conveying the factual benefits of their products to contractors: engineering reliability, plus savings on weight, time and cost.

Deep-hole/Gundrilling Everything we do today has grown out of our ability to drill straight, uniform wall thickness holes. Our drilling machines and over 50 years of experience allow us to drill long bars, maintaining precise wall variation tolerances. Our gundrilling capabilities start at .055” diameter; please contact us to discuss your specific applications. Trepanning For larger holes, trepanning is usually more cost effective than gundrilling. We are recognized as an industry leader at trepanning, as we have applied many of the techniques learned in gundrilling. Trepanning leaves a core from the center of the bar instead of turning it all into chips. In some of the more expensive alloys, this core bar can be re-used, representing added value. Contact us to discuss your larger diameter tube size requirements.

concentrate solely on drilling tube hollows, tubular devices and components. Founded in 1947, the company’s roots are in gundrilling, and everything that we do today has grown out of our ability to drill straight holes with uniform wall thickness. As an independent company, we can offer existing and new customers an unmatched focus on quality and service in fulfilling orders.

Tube Conditioning THI’s production capacity, combined with our unique deep-hole drilling process, has made us the preferred source of super-alloy tube hollows for many seamless tubing mills and tube reducers. Tube conditioning using THI’s proven processes, permits us to correct eccentricity in conventional hollows with no requirements for OD stock removal. This cost-effective method of improving input tube hollows or mill-produced tubing can yield considerable cost savings when working with expensive nickel or titanium alloys. If your material of choice is not available in tubing, or if you cannot find the desired wall thickness, we can start with barstock and machine a precision tube to your specifications.

Borcentric Tubing Our drilling process allows us to provide three types of tubing with different characteristics, depending on the end use. Honing does not improve wall thickness variation, concentricity or ID straightness! Only size and finish are changed. Type I is tubing that is bored through the entire length in a straight line, and has the bore concentric to the OD at both ends. (The OD would still have its original bend or bow). Type 2 is tubing that is bored through its entire length with the bore being concentric to the OD throughout the tube. This type does not necessarily have a straight bore, but does have a uniform wall thickness, and may have a bend or bow throughout its length.

Medical Working closely with our customers, THI has perfected the art of drilling very small and deep-holes in stainless steels, titanium, Nitinol and other medical device alloys. Our capabilities are unmatched in length/diameter ratio as is our ability to produce hollow (cannulated) devices and components such as intramedullary implants with extreme uniform wall thicknesses. We can also provide you with drilled tube hollows for redraw, and complementary manufacturing services. Aerospace The need for a high strength-to-weight ratio aloft makes tube hollows essential. Through the tube mills and tube reducers we serve, we have produced tubing and tubular components for engine and other aircraft requirements. Uniform hollows are our specialty.

Finished Machined Parts Our core business is to provide precision, seamless tube hollows, but our ultimate goal is to serve your needs. If that requires additional processes or steps, we can research and present the options available to reduce your manufacturing burden.

relationship between the inside and outside diameters Deep-hole drilling: Synonymous with “gundrilling” Gundrilling: The process by which holes are drilled into and/or through long bars of ferrous materials, e.g., barrels for firearms Seamless Tubing: Lengths of tubing that have not been rolled and welded

Energy We have a wealth of experience working with hafnium, beryllium, zirconium and other unusual metals used in power stations. Our unique drilling process is used to manufacture tubing with previously unheardof tolerances in those unusual alloys and in more common stainless alloys. This expertise has made THI a leading supplier to the energy industry.
