Burger King (abbreviated as BK) is a global hamburger fast food restaurant chain headquartered in unincorporated Miami-Dade County, Florida. Insta-Burger King, a restaurant chain headquartered in Jacksonville, Florida, was founded in 1953. After Insta-Burger King ran into financial problems in 1954, David Edgerton and James McLa more, two Miami-based franchisees, bought the company and renamed it Burger King.

The company would change hands four times over the next half-century, with the third group of owners, a partnership of TPG Capital, Bain Capital, and Goldman Sachs Capital Partners, taking it public in 2002. In late 2010, Brazilian investment firm 3G Capital paid $3.26 billion for a majority stake in BK. The new owners immediately began restructuring the company in order to turn around its fortunes. 3G and its partner Berkshire Hathaway ultimately merged the company with Tim Hortons, a Canadian doughnut chain, under the umbrella of Restaurant Brands International, a new Canadian-based parent company.
