A new type of treatment at Memorial Hermann Greater Heights may provide some much needed relief for those who suffer from severe asthma. In a press release, Dr. Jose Melendez, a pulmonary and critical care specialist affiliated with MHGH explains that the treatment uses mild heat to “reduce the amount of excess smooth muscle in the airways.” The treatment, called bronchial thermoplasty, is being offered currently at MHGH and is unique in that it is a non-drug treatment. Saima Mosso, a pulmonary territory manager with Boston Scientific (the group that engineered the equipment used in the procedure) said the treatment involves placing patients under light sedation with a specialist guiding a long tube through the patient’s mouth and into each airway. A thermoplasty device is then inserted in the tube and an array of electrodes are heated as they make contact with the airway walls. This shrinks the muscles and

Heights-area man honored as ‘Community Champion’ For The Leader Molina Healthcare of Texas recently celebrated the good deeds of three community heroes at its second annual Community Champions Awards. One of this year’s winners included Jarrett Hubert of Houston. Jarrett Hubert has completed four Ironmans, 10 Half Ironmans and nearly a dozen marathons. But to Hubert, one of the most rewarding moments in his life was guiding Andy Granda to become the first deaf and blind man to finish an Ironman race. For the past five years, Hubert has been traveling around the country to serve as a guide for marathoners and triathletes with vision and hearing impairments. As an accomplished endurance athlete himself, Hubert is led by a desire to make competing in these challenging physical events possible for those who could not do them alone. Last year, Hubert helped to plan and facilitate a cross country race, the Houston XC Championships, that raised more than $4,000 to
benefit the Brookwood Community. In addition to fundraising, the event has helped raise awareness and has drawn the attention of the Houston Marathon with whom Hubert is working to establish a visually impaired division. Hubert has established his own non-profit, CATAPULT, that gives athletes with disabilities access to training and assistance with fundraising. The organization also provides assistance for guides. What started as a passion for endurance sports has now developed into a mission to give something that many take for granted, the ability to run a race, to all. “Jarrett has made a positive difference in Houston and beyond through his hard work, dedication and selflessness,” said Anne Rote, president of Molina Healthcare of Texas. “It is our distinct honor to recognize Jarrett for his contributions to improve the lives of others, in addition to inspiring others to follow his example.” The Community Champions program celebrates the vision of Dr. C.

It’s art & exercise, can you Parkour? Maybe you’ve seen the cool videos of Parkour online or in the 2006 James Bond movie Casino Royale. Or maybe you’ve heard about it from a friend. I did, and was curious to learn more so I recently took a class at Urban Movement in the Heights. Because I’m not sure I can describe it accurately, I’m going to rely on Wikipedia which says parkour is “a training discipline using movement that developed from military obstacle course training. Practitioners aim to get from one point to another in a complex environment, without assistive equipment and in the fastest and most efficient way possible. Parkour includes running, climbing, swinging, vaulting, jumping, rolling, quadrupedal movement, and other movements as deemed most suit-
