Champions for children in need By Kim Hogstrom For The Leader Two years ago, The Leader brought news of a small but dedicated non profit agency operating on the west side of Oak Forest, serving 9,000 free and nutritious suppers each day to income-qualified children in Houston. Now, two years later, Be A Champion, Inc. serves 45,000 kids a day across Texas. The nonprofit still operates out of its humble singlestory office, but its original 60 employees blossomed to 600 statewide, and the impact on our state’s hungry children is profound and consequential. “It even amazes us! We’ve experienced 61.5 percent growth in three years,” stated Be A Champion’s CEO, Jaron Barganier. “It’s been a challenge, but somehow, we’ve done it, and we continue to grow. We must. There are so many hungry children in Texas.” Be a Champion, Inc. was founded by two University of Houston football players in 2001. Although Ben Fullelove with Petrol and Brash Brewing is not a part of the venture, there is another Brash connection as Thomas’ husband is a brewer there, so it’s a safe bet that Brash beers will show up on the menu. The restaurant serves wine and beer.
The inspiration for the menu which at the current time includes small plates of roasted nuts, baked Brie and Melon and Prosciutto – in addition to soups, salads and specialty sandwiches, was the kind of food Greenwood and Thomas wanted to eat. “We made the stuff we wanted,” said Greenwood. “Nikki couldn’t get her favorite sandwich when Eatzis closed. That’s where the Roll the Hard Six sandwich with rare roast beef came from.” An avid Star Wars fan – like
Heights resident wins four Lone Star Emmy awards For The Leader Houston Public Media was awarded a total of four Lone Star Emmy Awards by the Lone Star Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. Wedge Antilles is a Starfighter pilot who survived the Death Star battle. In addition to the regular menu, the restaurant will have theme days. On Polish day, a customer might be able to order pierogis and cabbage, while pasta day would feature a selection of baked pastas. “We want to keep the hood experiencing new food,” said Greenwood. Ploughman’s is making good use of their neighbors – they get their bread from Artisana Bread just down the sidewalk. Greenwood hopes that now that construction is ending on Pinemont the restaurant will get more car traffic. He says he was attracted to the center because of the tenant mix. “The tailor next door is very busy,” said Greenwood. “People pop their heads in here after to see what we’ve got going on.” Greenwood said the neighborhood has been good to him and hopes that translates into further success. “We are just happy to be open,” he said.

There’s a new dining option at the Pinemont Pavilion – Ploughman’s Deli & Café, 965 Pinemont Drive #100, opened the Wednesday before Thanksgiving. “It’s a soft opening,” said Darren Greenwood, who is running the restaurant with business partner Nikki Thomas. “This is only the fifth day, and the response has been nice. We’ll probably wait until after the holiday for the grand opening.” Greenwood said that most customers have been walking over from the adjacent neighborhoods or driving after they’ve seen an online mention. “Saturday we were really busy and other days it’s been steady,” he said. Current hours are 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday. At some point there will be a brunch service, but not yet. Ploughman’s has an impressive pedigree. Greenwood is still the part owner of the Petrol Station who established and still manages the kitchen there. He also worked at the Hobbit Café for ten years and opened its Richmond location. New community offers 55+ rentals for new active adult life By Landan Kuhlmann landan@theleadernews.com
504 Bering Drive 713-322-7038 www.OvertureTanglewood.com back. Furthermore, you will experience endless freedom with their maintenance-free living. You will have more time to enjoy the finer things in life at your own pace. “You live with your peer group, and you’re in an environment where you’re surrounded by people your own age and share the same interests,” Collins said. For those residents still working, an evening happy hour awaits each night along with other engaging opportunities like cooking classes and a private courtyard to enjoy such activities. Then, for those possibly transitioning out of the workforce and into retirement, Collins believes the variety of activities allows for a time of new discoveries through both their physical nature and allowance for personal connections. “You can discover new hobbies and different social connections you didn’t have when you were working,” she said. “When you stop working and going to the office, you miss the people part of it, and those are the type of things I think people are looking for when they’re within their peer group.” On the surface, the move from a home to an apartment may appear to be downsizing; but Collins believes that the access to everything within the 15,000 square feet of amenity space (in addition to their personal residence ) ultimately makes up the difference. “Your new home size may be smaller than your house, but you’re opened up to all these on-site amenities,” she said. “You’ve got all this space, but you don’t have to do the maintenance on it.” Overture Tanglewood is open seven days a week for tours and to explore all of the amenities the property has to offer. Prices normally begin at $2,000, but Collins said Overture Tanglewood is running a move in special which offers three months free rent (essentially bringing starting prices down to around $1,500) for a limited time only For more information on Overture Tanglewood’s new 55+ Active Adult community, call 713-322-7038 , visit OvertureTanglewood.com or stop by the community at 504 Bering Drive.

Set just off Chimney Rock on Bering Drive, newlyopened Overture Tanglewood is a 55 and over rental community offering active adults, 55+ – whether they’re simply over the house payments or wish to pursue alternative passions– the chance to continue an active lifestyle while experiencing a period of new discovery, all with their convenience and comfort in mind. “The baby boomers are at that time in their lives when they’re over the house and maintenance; they want to do different things in their life, so it’s coming at the right time,” Community Manager Emily Collins said. Overture offers traditional 12-, 15- and 18-month leases, but also began offering 3- and 6-month leasing options in Harvey’s immediate aftermath to serve a desperate community’s need. “We provide a variety of options, which is great because people have a wide array of length-of-stay needs. This is also more of a social environment, so you know your neighbors,” she said. “There really isn’t anything like this within a walkable distance of all the amenities you have here.” In total, Overture Tanglewood offers approximately 30 different floor plans. Some residences have book shelves or built-in desks, while nearly all possess a walk-in style shower with a granite seat, and about 90 percent have French doors opening onto patios overlooking the trees and pool area as well as the private courtyard space – almost as if residents have their own backyard. “We realize people are trying to find something unique and that fits their needs, so we have a lot of different layouts to help with that. We’ve thought of every detail from the finishes to the fixtures to offer that luxury feeling,” Collins said. Once residents become settled into their new home, Overture offers a plethora of hand-selected resort-style amenities from the time the sun rises to the moment it sets and beyond. The day begins with offerings such as a continental breakfast every morning; as well as a private dining room for parties; and the outdoor courtyard, grill and dining space for the evening. Recreationally, Overture offers a film club and book club; along with an on-site state-of-theart fitness center; a heated pool comfortable year-round; along with an on-site yoga studio with on-demand fitness; an on-site salon; and an indoor game room and movie room for those wanting to kick

St. Pius X set for state semifinal clash By Mike Tenney For The Leader For the St. Pius X football team, the countdown is on. One more win and the Panthers will play in Waco for the TAPPS Division I state championship. Two more wins and the Panthers WILL be the TAPPS Division I state champs. Using a 28-point second quarter to take control of the game, the Panthers then got a big stop from their defense late in the game last Saturday afternoon to defeat Dallas Bishop Dunne, 35-28, at Wildcat Stadium in Temple and advance to the TAPPS D-1 state semifinals 6 p.m. Saturday evening against unbeaten defending Division I state champion Dallas Bishop Lynch in Georgetown. Bishop Lynch stands 120 this year and reached the state semis with a 42-7 win over Parish Episcopal at the same time St. Pius X was eliminating Bishop Dunne. In fact, both of Lynch’s playoff wins have been easy ones as they began Bi-District by whipping Beaumont Kelly, 55-14. Bishop Lynch, when looking at the numbers, is a lot
Photo by Jennifer Lester The St. Pius X Panthers march onto the field for a game during the 2017 season. SPX defeated Bishop Dunne 35-28 last weekend to clinch its second consecutive state semifinal berth, which will have them facing Dallas Bishop Lynch as they look to advance to the coveted TAPPS state final.
like St. Pius. Besides having numerous playmakers on both sides of the ball, the Vikings began the year by playing big public schools like Texarkana Texas and Irving to help them prepare for this time of the year. And much like St. Pius X whipping College Station, 36-0, back in September, the Friars put it
on those schools pretty good as well. And like the Panthers, they’ve been involved in very few close games with a 17-13 win over District 1 mate Plano Prestonwood their nearest brush with defeat. And Plano Prestonwood is still alive, as the Lions are in the other TAPPS Division 1 state semifinal game, playing Tyler
All-Saints for a berth in next week’s state finals at Midway High School. Bishop Lynch likes to run the football, evidenced by their average of over 200 yards per game on the ground. Jacob Lewis leads the Knights with over 1,100 yards and 15 touchdowns this year. Jacob Hudson and
Local hoops teams look to kick season into high gear By Mike Tenney For The Leader Hovering around the .500 mark, the Heights basketball team begins District 18-6A play next week before wrapping up the 2017 portion of their winter schedule with the Houston ISD tournament just before Christmas. The Bulldogs face Northside Tuesday evening in one of their final pre-district games. Then they tip off league action Friday, Dec. 8 against Sam Houston at Delmar Fieldhouse. In all, they have three games against district competition in an eight-day span up to Saturday, Dec. 16 before they go into the New Year with only 18-6A match-ups remaining on the schedule. Head coach Eric Brewerton has an interesting mix of players on his roster with five seniors and four freshmen. In addition, there are two juniors and one sophomore. The youth does provide size inside with Tahaun Ford and ninth-grader Kolby Williams both standing 6-foot-6 and manning the post positions. Freshmen Patrick Neal and Trev Douglas are both point guards while fellow rookie Tyler Simon is a 6-foot-3 shooting guard who can also play small forward. Guard Michael Rucker, who had 28 points in the team’s win over A & M Consolidated before the Thanksgiving break, along with guard Terry Mimms, guard Jace Jones, guard Jonathan Blumrick, and guard Jonathan Ogugua are the five seniors on the team.
has just arrived and this young team – only two seniors listed on the roster – is still finding its way. They played just a handful of games in November but have played some top-notch teams like St. Pius X and HCYA Homeschool as they prepare for their TAPPS Division II, District 3 games, which ring in 2018 Friday, Jan. 5 when they visit The Woodlands Christian Academy (TWCA). And they face a couple more powerful private school teams this month with a trip to the currently-unbeaten Village School and a rematch six days later at home against HCYA. The Lions are hoping to put things together this year after a couple of years in which they struggled. They have not had a winning season since the 201213 season, but are hoping to be competitive this year with a team that could feature as many as four juniors and four sophomores. Lutheran North has two games scheduled next week. The Lions host Emery/Weiner Tuesday, Dec. 5 before they are at the Village School Friday. Waltrip The Rams are hoping to get things on track after they got off to a slow start in District 24-5A with three straight losses. While most leagues don’t begin the league schedule until at least mid-December, the Rams have jumped right into
their District 24-5A schedule already played defending league Madison and runnerup Sterling. Houston Furr is off to a quick start in league play with a pair of wins, but the Rams have a chance to curtail the Brahmas momentum when they clash, 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 9 at the Pavilion in Waltrip’s only league game next week. Furr, Sharpstown, and Milby began this week at the top of the nine-team district with 3-0
marks but they have yet to play each other and Furr was right there with them, still unbeaten at 2-0. Sterling stood alone in fifth place at 1-1. Waltrip was the fourth-place team in the district last year and qualified for the playoffs, but lost to District 23-5A champion Fort Bend Elkins in the first round of the Region III-6A tournament. Both Heights and Waltrip will play in the Houston ISD tournament, beginning Thursday, Dec. 21 in their final games of this year.
Jarek Broussard have combined for another 1,500 and scored nine times each so the Falcons will likely try to establish their running game as they always do. Quarterback Sam Vrana keeps defense honest, having thrown for just under 800 yards this year. For the Panthers, the win over Dunne was just the third game this year they have been held to less than 40 points but they still were able to move the football to the tune of 415 yards in total offense. And they were hardly one-dimensional with quarterback Grant Gunnell throwing for 222 yards, including a touchdown, and running for 70 more with two of those carries ending in scores. Tailback Kaleb Ducros rushed for 61yards and one touchdown while Chase Lane picked up 60 more on the ground to keep the Friars on their heels. Bishop Dunne got on the board first against the Panthers, scoring a first-quarter touchdown but in the second period, the Panthers scored on three straight drives and then the defense got involved to give them a 28-7 lead at the half.

Gunnell threw a 17-yard scoring pass to senior wide receiver Jacob Jefferson, who returned the lineup after missing a couple of games with an injury, to get their scoring started. Gunnell finished off their next possession with a one-yard touchdown run and minutes later, tailback Kaleb Ducros ran two yards for another score and a 21-7 Panther advantage. Then just before the half, defensive back Brice Vooletich picked off a Dunne pass and returned it 21 yards to paydirt, putting the team from Shepherd Drive up by three scores. The teams exchanged scores in the third period with Gunnell scoring again from a yard out and the Panthers led 35-14 to begin the fourth period. The Friars scored twice to close the gap to a touchdown and were driving late in the game before the Panther defense kept them out of the end zone to preserve the win and keep their state championship hopes alive. Jefferson finished the game with exactly 100 yards receiving to lead the pass catchers. St. Pius X now stands 10-1 on the season.
