The business will be between Brush & Bobby and Local Poke.

Stufflebeme said she hopes to be open by April 2019.

Black Dog Records to fill vacated Gipsy Girls Swamplot had the scoop on Black Dog Records, which has filed a permit for a new space at 726 W. 19th St., where kids’ karaoke and tween party shop Gipsy Girls used to reside. New restaurant to open on West 19th After a fire took out South-

In mid-November, Allegro Builders broke ground on the company’s first commercial development in the area since 2008. Allegro plans to deliver the nearly 8,400-square-foot, three-story mixed-use project in the third quarter of 2019.

Previous projects in the Heights for Allegro include 1001 Studewood – now home to Maison Pucha bistro with Allegro’s headquarters above it. Their first commercial endeavor in the area was the nearby 933 Studewood, formerly home to Glass Wall restaurant and now the BCK restaurant.

The builders also are responsible for dozens of custom homes and remodels in the Heights.

Leasing of the space at 841 Yale St., intended for both restaurant and office users, is being managed by Chris Williams of Heritage Texas Properties’ recently formed commercial division.

Torture for a good cause

By Betsy Denson betsy@theleadernews.com Four years ago, Orangetheory Fitness trainer John Cantu approached some of the Houston franchise owners with an innovative philanthropic idea: OTF members could donate money to turn the tables on their trainers, and the money would benefit a good cause in the community.

Fittingly, the event is called Torture the Trainer.

“The first year our goal was $400, and we made $8,000,” Cantu said. “We’ve doubled our goal every year since.”

Orangetheory Fitness adopted families for the holidays the first year and supported Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Houston the second. Last year, Torture the Trainer benefitted the Make-A-Wish Foundation of The Texas Gulf Coast & Louisiana. Orangetheory Fitness had a goal of $25,000, but raised $50,000 for the organization.

For the first two weeks in December, the Houstonarea Orangetheory Fitness studios will host Torture the Trainer, again benefiting the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

Members have the opportunity to “torture” trainers by assigning repetitions in one of six designated exercises — burpees, jump squats, jump lunges, pop jacks, push-ups and rowing — for a donation.

For example, one dollar equals one burpee for one trainer or 10 meters on the rower. All studios will participate in a “Watch Party” for trainers to complete their assigned reps at the Sawyer Heights studio at 4 p.m. on Dec. 15, after which a check will be presented to the Make-A-Wish organization and a wish family.

Make-A-Wish director of development Nikki Eliason said an average wish costs $9,700 and that while their organization is appreciative of every company that steps up to sponsor a single wish, Orangetheory Fitness is unique in that last

year it funded wishes for six kids. This year the company hopes to fund 10 wishes.

Eliason emphasized that wishes granted have a value much greater than their dollar amount.

“Every child gets to dream up their own wish,” she said. “Our hope is that as they are going through their wish journey, the families find strength, hope and joy.

So much of a normal childhood is not normal for these kids. These wishes support the entire family.”

Last year, the Make-AWish Foundation of The Texas Gulf Coast & Louisiana granted 403 wishes.

Eliason said recipients are children who are battling critical illnesses. The illness doesn’t have to be terminal for a wish to be granted.

“Our goal is that every eligible kid gets a wish,” Eliason said.

Once Make-A-Wish receives a referral, the organization talks to the treating physician to determine eligibility, and then talks to the family. Volunteer wishgranters work with the child and the family to get to the “heart of the wish,” Eliason said. There are shopping sprees, family vacations and meetings with Chuck Norris and Texans players. One recipient chose to visit Mattel in California to design his own Hot Wheels car.

The OTF event is meaningful to the members who support it - although you don’t have to be a member to give. Member Lori Pinter has been participating for the last three years and is excited about this year too.

“I have gone to watch the event every year,” Pinter said. “They do a great job and a crazy amount of reps.

Some trainers get in the thousands. It is amazing to see not just how much the company cares about the community, but that the trainers care so much.”

Cantu said OTF members are already teasing him about the dollar amounts they are earmarking for his torture. He said the veteran trainers are trying to pre-

pare the newbies for what’s coming.

An ode to Spinach Madeleine - serving history

For me that dish is Spinach Madeleine, which is kind of crazy because I don’t really like spicy foods and Spinach Madeline features jalapeno cheese. Or at least it did. But I digress.

I had Spinach Madeleine for the first time in Mississippi in my 20s when I was dating my now-husband and visited his mother for the holidays. With the first bite, I was in culinary heaven.

grees from LSU in psychology and sociology to spend much time in the kitchen. It was only as she was getting married that she heeded her mother-in-law’s advice and took a home economics class to learn her way around the kitchen.

And yet, the dish she made with a last-minute substitution will be the one I’ll be (hopefully) eating for the next 20 holidays and beyond.

Prepare bank deposits by compiling information from customer payments, verifying and balancing receipts, and sending cash, checks, or other forms of payment to banks. Classify, record, and summarize numerical and financial data to compile and keep financial records, using electronic journals and ledgers through the Peachtree and QuickBooks, and Microsoft Office software. Reconcile and analyze financial discrepancies to inform the company president of financial issues. Compile financial, accounting, and auditing reports pertaining to cash receipts, expenditures, accounts payable and receivable, and profits and losses. Maintain accounting records on a weekly and monthly basis. Special requirements: Knowledge of Microsoft Office, Knowledge of QuickBooks; Knowledge of Peachtree Education requirement: minimum of a bachelor’s degree; no work experience required. Bring old-fashioned Christmas caroling back Before Christmas carols were sung by the general public, they were enjoyed during church services, when they sometimes were performed by official carol singers. However, new carols became popular during the Victorian era, when many ordinary people took to the streets to share holiday joy with others through the gift of song. Wassail, a thick, hot and spiced beverage, often kept carolers warm, and soon wassailing and caroling became intertwined.

For the Leader Christmas carols help set the mood for the holiday season. Such songs are played in stores to create festive atmospheres for shoppers, and many families play seasonal music as they decorate their homes for the holidays.

Carols were first sung in Europe thousands of years ago during winter solstice celebrations. When Christian holidays replaced many of the pagan celebrations, Christian holiday carols replaced the earlier songs.

of entertainment at school concerts and some religious group events, the classic tradition of carolers going doorto-door has largely fallen by the wayside. But those who want to bring back this once beloved tradition can take the following steps to do just that.

Find a caroling group leader.

It helps to have someone who has a sense of musicality and pitch to lead the caroling. Carols are usually sung a cappella, so you’ll need a strong singer to guide others and keep them in tune.

Recruit a theater or music student or even a member of your church choir. Fill out the rest of the carolers with volunteers who have moderate to strong singing abilities. Of course, you can accept anyone, as it’s more about sharing the joy rather than having a pitch-perfect group.

Choose a neighborhood to visit.

Select an established neighborhood where there are likely to be many families and even seniors who will be most receptive to carolers. Place fliers in the mailboxes alerting residents of your caroling plans for those who want to be home to enjoy the free show.

Members may want to join in your efforts to spread holiday cheer.

Neighbors: Oak Forest resident becomes American citizen

Sincere congratulations to our neighbor in Oak Forest, Guy Cowan. Cowan has become a United States citizen after 26 years in the states!

Cowan arrived in Texas in 1992 from Comber, N. Ireland.

Comber is a little quaint town 10 miles outside of Belfast and famed for the quality of its potatoes. Guy was a professional squash player and came to Houston to interview to be the Head Squash Professional at the Texas Club. The rest is history. Guy’s favorite thing about America is his family AND queso and margaritas!

He is looking very forward to casting his first vote. Guy, wife Amabelle and son Landon have lived in Oak Forest since 2002.

This week Neighbors, I didn’t have to reach out for a story - my own family had quite an adventure and I’m glad to share it with you.

After reading my column over the years, some of you know we enjoy camping. I’ve been a camping mom for 27 years now. In years past, we have enjoyed Thanksgiving dinner or Christmas at home with our extended fam and then we’ve driven off up I-45 North in anticipation of one of our most treasured activities together - family camping and hunting.

This year we decided to skip Thanksgiving altogether and get out there, not wasting a minute of the four full days we had together. Abby came in from Texas A&M where she is studying Ocean & Coastal Resources and Geology, 13-yearold Zachary was raring to go, Abby’s best beau Chance Williams was going with us for the first time, and my husband Ernest and I shopped, packed and made sure hunting licenses were in order.

Our “camp” is off FM 84 outside Fairfield and has been in my family for decades. Just like Texas is comprised of sand, rock, hills, flatland prairie and piney woods – our land is also a mixture of red dirt and colorful rock, sand, scrubby oaks and grasses at the northeast corner, which is where we park and camp, and then down a rocky hill with steep drop-offs, over a tiny creek bed and wide gully to the three other lower lying quadrants full of short pine trees mixed thickly with oaks, Texas yaupon, and cedar trees, just made for deer hunting.

If I could paint a picture with words: blue-green curly lichen growing on red iron ore rocks, glistening dew on wild grey-green grasses growing in clumps, the red and gold of turning oak leaves in bright contrast to the determined brilliant green of native cedar, shafts of morning sun pouring through trees, swift and colorful sunsets, the fascinating perfection of animal tracks through the sand and creek bed, and expansive blue Texas skies over all of it. Coyotes, deer, wild hogs, large cats once in a while, raccoons, armadillos, buzzards, song birds, hawks, snakes, a few squirrels and rabbits leave their mark in tracks and scat and unfinished meals. Untouched and undeveloped, this ruggedly beautiful land is ours to protect and enjoy. We bring everything in we need including light and

water and we do our best to leave it as we found it.

Our first day was eventful with the kids pitching our small four-man tent and their two two-man tents as I set up my camp kitchen and Ernest readied the hunting gear. Then they were off to hunt while I continued setting up, built our campfire on a flat rocky area about 20 yards from our tent and my “kitchen” and took pictures – just breathing in the fresh air and so very grateful to be there.

Before we knew it darkness fell and we built up the campfire for light and warmth. Eating dinner, enjoying hot cocoa, bundled up against the cold wind, we’d heard coyotes singing around 5:30 p.m. and they continued singing here and there throughout the evening.

At one point, someone said “FREEZE” (we all do this and we all comply when someone does this, because it means someone has heard something and wants to identify what it was for safety or continued hunting stealthiness) and then “I heard a big cat’s scream!” and someone else confirmed that. I didn’t blink an eyelash, because no one has seen a big cat on our land since the very late 1980’s. And I hadn’t heard the scream.

By 10 p.m., everyone was in their tents, chairs put away, any tiny tidbit of food locked away in cars to deter midnight marauders, camp secure.

13-almost-14-year-old Zach had been waiting for weeks to share a tent with his 21-yearold sister Abby, whom he dearly misses when she’s away at Texas A&M; they are partners in crime and still giggle in their tent - a beautiful sound which traveled down to my tent and made me feel oh-so-cozy.

By 10:30, Ernest was lightly snoring. I was deep into a David Baldacci book, loving my new sleeping bag, and the temperature was a damp and chilly 43 degrees.

I became aware of a sound right at my head which was almost touching the tent wall as I lay there, on my side, motionless, book in hand, glasses off, handgun alongside my sleeping bag.

It took me several long seconds to recognize the sound was very wrong: a deep timbre of cat breathing and light growling instead of my own cats’ light sound in my ear which happens at home often when I’m reading. That inquisitive, interested sound cats make - growly/purr-y/breathy

sound - when they are trying to figure something out.

At the same time, fascinated and terrified, hearing that heavy breathing and low growling sound right in my ear, knowing the sound to be some kind of very large cat - RIGHT AT MY HEAD AGAINST MY TENT! - our Magellan fourman tent - and remembering the big cat scream from earlier in the evening, I was frozen and unable to move with thoughts racing.

What is it? Mountain lion – bobcat? Do I move? Not move? Make noise? Remain silent and still?

Just thinking about the two small tents full of our tasty youngsters just 50 yards away, I knew we needed to do something. Why oh WHY did the kids pitch their tents so far away from us?

Afraid to move or make noise, I threw my book at my husband, but he slept on.

Then I couldn’t stand it a minute more, that low growling, heavy breathing, definitely-interested-cat sound still there, I jumped up and in one move karate-chopped my husband’s middle in his sleeping bag, unzipped my own sleeping bag and jumped on Ernie all at the same time, adrenaline pumping.

He sat up like a rocket because he knows I’m pretty resourceful and it takes a lot to make me afraid enough to wake him, and we sat and listened - me shivering and shaking for 10 minutes, our eyes big, and then I heard a “mwrarrrrrrrrrrrr” sound about 30 feet away. Gah! First, Googling “what to do when a mountain lion is outside your tent” brought up things too scary to contemplate and I couldn’t even look at those, thinking about the kids with dread. Imagining the big cat pacing through our campsite and trying to figure out what we were and whether we were tasty or not, I decided to reach out by messaging two friends very experienced in all kinds of Texas hunting – “QUICK - what should I do?”

Thank God for Verizon cell coverage!

So I messaged Evan Bircher, formerly our neighbor in Shepherd Park Plaza, and Kelly Saldivar, formerly our neighbor in Oak Forest.

Fortunately for me, Bircher was awake and responded right away. He said “Yes! Jump out, make as much noise as possible! Beat on something metal and get as much light on as possible!”

One tiny part of me thought he might be making fun of me and giggling, getting me to react like a jackanape, but the larger part of me needed to do something and now!

We didn’t waste any time we leapt out of our tent yelling with our handguns in hand, senses sharp, being as careful as we’ve been trained and practiced to be, and turned on both our cars with headlights and country music blaring. I banged my skillets together until my ears rang.

We’d been texting and calling the kids for those 10 long minutes sitting in the tent, but they were sound asleep and never responded.

They definitely woke up when we turned on the cars and music - scared to death because they thought some crazy backwoods redneck hooligans were invading our private property! That made us laugh so hard the next day when the kids recounted their version of events.

After a good bit of time, we turned it all off and listened

in the dark - hard. For a long while. Then finally, exhaustion won out and we got back into our tent (the kids were terrified and stayed in their tents).

The rest of the night was calm – some animal was moosing about in my kitchen gear and coyotes came really close, but all of that was regular, sweet night music at camp.

We are accustomed to coyotes, snakes, raccoons, armadillos, and skunks moseying through our campsite at night, but this was most definitely our scariest moment camping, ever.

After sleeping in our tent again the next two nights and hearing all the other usual sounds, nothing ever came close to that growling/breathing sound and I know without a doubt there was a big cat on the other side of my pillow.
