Leader Nibbles A weekend of food trucks and more food trucks! If you’re looking for something delicious to eat and something to do this weekend, look no further. With over 20 different food trucks, Saturday, Nov. 15, from 2 – 8 p.m. will be The Best Damn CHRISTINA Food Truck MARTINEZ Festival Ever at 1902 Washington Ave. Each food truck will be providing a sample of their menu throughout the day. There will be craft beer and wine on site, as well as live entertainment. Adult tickets start at $35 and this ticket gets you a sample from all 21 food trucks. To purchase tickets and find out what trucks are participating check out www.thebestfoodtruckfest.com. Fried Chicken is on the menu for the fall in the Heights Another Southern classic has emerged in the Heights as The Chicken Ranch at 6500 N Main. The concept has come from former Goro & Gun owner Joshua Martinez and business partner Paul Sedillo. The two have had a soft opening over the span of two weeks and plan on being open fulltime Wednesday, Nov. 12. The Southern Heights eatery has had a few hiccups along the way. Tuesday morning the establishment tweeted: “Grrr. The emergency repairs continue. We will reopen Wednesday at 11 a.m.” Martinez told The Leader that electrical wiring in the kitchen was a nightmare and needed to be fixed the right way, instead of putting patches on top of more patches. Wednesday the menu will highlight their Southern chicken and sides, and Martinez says if there is one thing to try on the menu, it’s the collard greens. Mad foodie experiments are happening on Shepherd Over on Shepherd you can find a bargain in the car dealership realm and, now, owners of D&T Drive Inn and Down House have opened a different concept called the Kipper Club Test Kitchen. According to the website, Kipper Club Test Kitchen is an experiment in building community through food. Kipper Club hosts a series of weekly guest-chef dinners where guests will have a unique chance to get a close look at the chef’s creative process in an intimate open-kitchen setting. Experiments are being held this weekend and on through December. On Saturday, at 9 a.m. KCTK will host Part Two of Fish School with Chef PJ Stoops. The class is a bit pricey, but the class offers hands-on learning for prep-work, buying or catching your seafood and cooking. The class comes with lunch and take home material. For more information or to buy tickets, visit their website at www.treadsack. com/kipperclub/ Italian cuisine coming soon New signs are going up with the words “coming soon” at 1500 Shepherd Dr., where Mascalzone Ristorante Italian will soon open its doors. The Houston branch has another location that is up and running at 12126 Westheimer. The menu assures readers that sauces, pizzas and pastas are prepared and made to order. Variety is an option when it comes to the menu. From Avocado Al Gambero for a starter, to Taglierini Neri All’Aragosta - Black squid ink pasta with whole diced lobster, garlic basil, fresh tomatoes and chili for dinner. Don’t forget the desert and drink menu, too. A manager at the Westheimer location said readers can expect the Shepherd location to be open next month. Have a tip for nibbles? Flying Saucer Pie Company owner, Bill Leeson, says the strawberry pie is what made the company famous, even during the holidays the pumpkin and pecan can’t keep up.

Photos by Betsy Denson

A look behind the kitchen door of The Flying Saucer Pie Company before the holidays By Betsy Denson betsy@theleadernews.com The Flying Saucer Pie Company’s Bill Leeson could teach us all a lesson about work ethic. In his 70s, Leeson normally works from 5 a.m. to 2 p.m. But during November and December, when his pie company does the lion’s share of its business – selling 21,000 pies in three days during Thanksgiving weekend – he pulls an all-nighter with other staff, getting there around midnight and working straight through the morning. And he’s been at it since the 1960s. Leeson arrived in Houston in 1963 from Canada as a 20-year old. For the previous five years, he’d been a merchant seaman. “I was tired of being cold,” Leeson said. “When I got here I was broke. I had enough money for the plane fare but not a cab. I walked from Hobby to the Downtown YMCA.” He already had a job in the hotel across the street and the Y let him stay until he could get his first paycheck. Leeson worked in hotels and cafeterias and eventually met Earl Turner, a former manager at Piccadilly Cafeteria, who founded Flying Saucer Pie Company in 1967. The original location from 1967 to 1975 was 15 blocks east of the current location at 436 W Crosstimbers Rd. For many years, Leeson was partners with Turner’s daughter Marilyn Edgin. About 10 years ago, he bought Edgin’s share of the company as well, and now runs Flying Saucer with another partner. In 1975, Leeson built a new structure on Crosstimbers. “The Garden Oaks Golf Club was across the street then,” he said. Leeson did keep the name for the company though.

“I’d been thinking about a mural anyway so I for $14.75. “It made us famous,” Leeson said. “Even dur- said ‘why don’t you bring me some sketches’,” ing the holiday season the pumpkin and pecan said Leeson. pies don’t catch up to it.” After the project, done solely by spray paint, There are a number of Flying Saucer pies, like was completed, Leeson asked Villarreal how the more modern Key Lime, that didn’t come much he owed him. from Pie Marches On. “We were into the Apollo Space program then,” said Leeson. “Earl wanted something involving space. I was opposed to it, but over the years, I’ve realized I really love it.” It was Turner who also introduced Leeson to his early pie bible, called Pie Marches On. The author of the 1939 book, Los Angeles’ Monroe Boston Strause, was known as the Pie King. “He’s pictured in the book with [silent film star] Mary Pickford,” said Leeson. “It’s ancient.” Ancient but handy, because it was here that Leeson learned recipes for classic pies. He’s had to alter the recipes over time to make way for more modern ingredients, when the old ones aren’t available, but on the whole, he’s making classic pies with classic ingredients. “We don’t use any preservatives,” said Leeson. “This building doesn’t have a freezer. Beer lovers throughout Houston will have a special opportunity this weekend to pay tribute to some of our city’s fallen heroes and raise funds for the future generations of firefighters. Karbach Brewing Co., alongside Okra Charity Saloon, Flying Saucer, Molly’s Pub, El Big Bad and Niko Niko’s, are teaming Thirsty up for a downtown pub crawl to raise Explorer money and awareness for the Robert Garner Firefighter Foundation - a charity established to help future firefighters attend local fire academies and continue

music from Sundance Head and the Houston Fire Department’s “Pipes and Drums” band. For more information about the event, visit www. karbachpubcrawl.com. Katch 22 Holiday Happy Hour Katch 22 is ringing in the holidays with turkey and cocktails! After you’ve had your turkey and stuffing, surely you’ll be thirsty. All signature cocktails are half price, and you can choose from a Blood Orange Margarita, Irish Mule, Steam 75 and more. Premium vodka is $5.95 and you name the drink! Stress-free holiday entertainment For The Leader Whether you’re a seasoned cook and veteran at throwing parties, or new to the art of entertaining, hosting family and friends can provoke a condition that has been coined, “kitchen performance anxiety.” Here are a few tips to help. 1. Start planning your menu as far in advance as possible of your gathering -- whether it’s an intimate Sunday brunch, a big cocktail party, a Sunday afternoon open house of cookies and coffee, or a traditional sit-down dinner. Tweak your menu as you get closer to the day to make sure you’re comfortable with what you’ve set out to make. You may need to edit here and there based on how busy your schedule gets

during the days leading up to the date. 2. When selecting recipes, think like a chef and choose dishes with ingredients that focus on what’s in season and available at peak freshness. This approach to devising your menu will ensure the best tasting results, even if you’re a novice cook. Fortunately, the holidays is all about celebrating what’s in season -- such as pumpkin and acorn squash, delicious root vegetables like sweet potatoes and carrots, and crisp apples, juicy pears, pecans, walnuts, cranberries, and more. 3. Seriously turn down the dial on stress by choosing appetizers, sides, main dishes and desserts that you can make either completely or partly one or several days in advance. This is a huge time saver that relieves a good deal of the pressure to perform on

the day of your party. Selecting appetizers that you can make in advance is especially smart, as this gives you the freedom to enjoy the company of guests when they first arrive. 4. Before you start cooking and baking, take inventory of kitchen equipment to be sure you have everything that’s called for in your recipes. Are your pots and pans, cookie sheets, electric mixer, food processor, kitchen knives and other culinary tools in good working order? If you need to replace or add items, now’s the time to shop. 5. A well-stocked pantry is every clever cook’s secret weapon. Infuse your recipes with gourmet flavors by having on hand a variety of wellmade red wine and balsamic vinegars, assorted oils, good

Thanksgiving family recipes from Leader readers 1 cup of seedless green grapes, cut in half 1 cup of seedless red grapes, cut in half 2-3 cups of small marshmallows 1 container of Cool Whip or blend 2 cups of heavy cream until creamy with a teaspoon of vanilla, sugar or sugar substitute (I prefer Stevia) Mix all ingredients and add the whipped cream. Refrigerate until ready to serve. Keeps well overnight. Freshen with additional whipping cream or Cool Whip as needed, drain excess juices.

By Betsy Denson betsy@theleadernews.com Turkey wasn’t mentioned on the written menu of the first Thanksgiving dinner but it has sure made up for lost time in the years since. According to Statistic Brain, 51 million turkeys are consumed on Thanksgiving Day and we spend $2,375,000,000 on the total dinner. And what a dinner it is. If you are looking for a side to go with your bird, some Leader readers contributed some of their family favorites. Sonia M. Tersigne says that she has been making her Ambrosia Salad for years and it’s always a big hit during the holidays.

Samantha Mendenhall shared two recipes: cream corn casserole and lemon ice box pie. “Super easy and really delicious,” she said. Cream Corn Casserole Ingredients: 1 pkg. Jiffy Cornbread Mix 8 oz sour cream 15 oz. can corn 15 oz. can cream corn 1 egg beaten 3⁄4 stick (or less) butter or margarine, melted

Ambrosia Salad 1 red apple, Honey Crisp or red chopped 1 granny smith apple chopped 1 8 oz can of mandarin, drained 1 4-8 oz. can crushed pineapple, drained 1 cup chopped walnuts

Combine all ingredients, pour in 9x9 dish and bake 1 hour at 350 degrees or until golden brown.

2 tablespoons olive oil 2 tablespoons unsalted buter 2 pounds fresh brussels sprouts trimmed & quartered kosher salt 2 to 4 tablespoons fresh lemon juice freshly ground black pepper Toast the nuts on a baking sheet in a 350 F oven, stirring occasionally, until very fragrant and the skins are deep brown and cracked about 15 minutes. Wrap the nuts in a clean dish towel, steam for at least 5 minutes vigorously, rub the nuts in towel. Aim for about half. Chop coarsely and heat a 12 inch skillet over medium high heat. When the pan is hot, add the oil and butter. As soon as the butter melts, add the brussels sprouts and spread evenly around the pan. Sprinkle with salt and cook without disturbing until browned on the first side, about 3 minutes. Continue to cook, stirring the sprouts occasionally until they’re well browned all over, another 4 to 8 minutes. Add 1/4 cup water, cover partially and cook until tender, another 4 to 5 minutes. The sprouts shouldn’t be mushy. Add the nuts, season to taste with the lemon juice salt and pepper. Serve immediately!

Lemon Icebox Pie Ingredients: 3 cans of Eagle Brand Milk 1 Box of Vanilla Wafers 7 to 9 Lemons 3 Egg Yolks Medium carton of Cool Whip Empty 3 cans of Eagle Brand Milk into a nonmetal bowl, add the 3 egg yolks and stir well. Take your deep dish pie plate and crush enough vanilla wafers to cover the bottom. Squeeze and strain 2 to 3 lemons at a time and add to the milk mixture. Stir well. It will get thick as you add more lemon juice and stir. Taste the mixture after a while to see if it has enough lemon. When this is done, pour it slowly over the crushed vanilla wafers. Add vanilla wafer around the rim and put in icebox to set for at least 24 hours. When you are ready to serve, add the cool ship.

Benefit from nutritious turkey even after Thanksgiving and the holidays For The Leader As soon as the weather cools and the crispness of late autumn is in the air, thoughts turn to more hearty meals, and of course, the fall pièce de résistance: Thanksgiving dinner. Much more than just delicious and filling, turkey boasts many nutritional benefits, making it a worthwhile addition to your diet regardless of the season. · Protein: Turkey is often overshadowed by other meats in refrigerated display cases, but it remains an excellent source of protein in a low-fat package. A typical 3.4- to fourounce serving of skinless turkey breast (about the size of a deck of cards) contains around 30 grams of protein, providing about 65 percent of the average person’s recommended

Turkey is low in fat and full of protein and other nutrients, making it a worthy addition to your diet no matter the time of year.

daily allotment of protein. Protein helps the body feel full and serves many essential functions in the body. Proteins regulate the entry of nutrients through cell walls, help the body grow and help it to generate antibodies that fight against illness. · Low-fat: A serving of tur-

key is only 161 calories and contains just four grams of fat, which is low in saturated fat. · B-vitamin benefits: Turkey is an excellent source of B vitamins, including B3, B6 and B12. Having enough B3, also known as niacin, is important for overall health, and higher levels of niacin can improve cholesterol levels and lower a person’s risk for cardiovascular disease. B6 is also called pyridoxine. It’s involved in the process of making certain neurotransmitters, including serotonin and norepinephrine, which transmit signals in the brain. Important for neurological health, B12 helps decrease levels of homocysteine, which can contribute to cognitive decline. · Immune system effects: People may not know turkey contains selenium, which is key

to healthy thyroid function. It also helps boost the immune system by playing a role in the body’s antioxidant defense system. Selenium may help eliminate free radicals in the body that would otherwise contribute to cancer risk. · Relaxation: Many people are aware of turkey’s ability to induce feelings of relaxation, particularly when eaten in abundance at the Thanksgiving dinner table. Turkey contains the amino acid tryptophan, which plays a role in triggering production of serotonin. Serotonin can induce feelings of relaxation and sleepiness. Turkey is lean, full of essential nutrients and low in saturated fat, making it a worthy addition to your diet no matter what time of year it happens to be.

Helpful tips from P. 2B quality chicken and vegetable stock, seasoning salts, capers, spices and nuts. You might want to invest in a package of Seriously Simple Seasoning Salt (available at dianeworthington.com) for spicing up all of your savory dishes. 6. To save time on preparing drinks when guests arrive, consider making pitchers of a signature cocktail in advance, along with a non-alcoholic version. You can set up a tray in the foyer, kitchen or elsewhere that’s convenient for guests to help themselves. For an easy-tomake crowd pleaser that’s perfect for the holidays, try mulling fresh apple cider with allspice, cinnamon sticks, lemon slices, and a splash of bourbon or rum. 7. Make lists of everything that needs to be done, from shopping for ingredients to planning when the cooking or baking gets done to deciding on the look of your table

setting and choosing your lighting and background music. You’ll make entertaining seriously simple when you refer to your “road map” of lists. 8. Give yourself permission to round out your menu with store-bought foods. There’s no shame in focusing on what you make best and leaving some items to other experts, like the fabulous bakery down the road with the most divine apple crumb pie and shortbread cookies. You can also make smart shortcuts, like purchasing ready-made piecrust to save time baking your family’s heirloom recipe for sour cream pecan pie. 10. Embrace offers from family members and guests to help out, since let’s face it, everyone winds up in the kitchen anyway. Think ahead about the kinds of tasks that can easily be delegated so that guests can feel useful without working too hard.

F

or 60 years, THE LEADER newspaper has been part of your home. From pictures and stories about you, your children and your grandchildren, to reporting on the news and events of this community for the past six decades, THE LEADER has been delivered to your home come rain or shine.

Because of food and refreshment needs, we are asking families to register before they attend. All we need is number of people you’re bringing. Please call The Leader at

(713) 686-8494 or email us at Sixty@theleadernews.com

To mark the occasion, we’re throwing a birthday bash and family event for the community, designed to bring as many of you together as possible. First and foremost, this is a family event, which is why admission is FREE. From a snow village to a petting zoo to moon walks, we’ll have enough to keep the kids busy (and happy) for a few hours. Cheap lunches and free birthday cake will be provided, and we’ve got it on good authority that Santa will be on location taking good notes. But this is more than play time. With a large crowd expected, we’ll have businesses from all over the area, including arts and crafts, that might just take care of a few Christmas shopping trips in one location.

meet Heights resident and self taught artist Claudia Powell are influenced by people in certain moments in our life, then we change, as the seasons change, we grow, we develop, we then adopt our own concepts and style and we then manifest this in what we do.” That is so true. Watching her over the years I have seen her create on mirrors, recycling material, jewelry and it all retains her unique style. Yet, she has the ability to paint or create in almost any style. At the 10 Years of Awesome show that I hosted in March for First Saturday Arts Market, Claudia and husband arrived with an amazing portrait of me taken from the very headshot used in this column. I would of course, prefer one of her new paintings to adorn my walls that will be at her show Saturday night. Keep an eye on this one. Vision, passion, obsession, persistence and drive are words that come to mind upon first meeting artist Claudia Powell. Powell, a Heights resident and self taught artist is having a solo show Saturday evening in the Rice Village at ASHA Handcrafted Jewelry Boutique. I still remember the first time I met Claudia, a mutual friend called and told me that her babysitter was an amazing undiscovered talent. She wanted me to meet her and see if I could give her direction. Well, my friend was obviously a collector of Claudia’s work too as I got private tour of some amazing works. Much at the time was clearly influenced by famous Mexican artists like muralist Diego Rivera.

A few other events this week: Thursday, 7 to 10 p.m. Houston Art Showcase Houston Is Art at D. M. Allison Gallery, 2709 Colquitt St., 77098. Houston Art Showcase is a new art nonprofit that offers prizes, awards and recognition for those artists who are selected from each competition as well as offering the opportunity for a fair jury selection for all participant artists. This inaugural show also launches an Indigo campaign. Expect great art, and a crowd meant to be seen! Artists featured were selected out of more than 200+ submissions. Houstonartistshowcase.com

Claudia Powell pictured with Mitch Cohen. Powell’s November Dream, available at her show Saturday evening.

Originally from Torreon, Coahuila Mexico, Claudia has been in Houston since 1996. Self taught in many mediums, Claudia first worked as an illustrator and designer in advertising and publishing. Her figure and caricature work alone is so intricate, humorous and detailed it could sustain her for many years as a working artist. She says of her early paintings, “I was still in my 20’s when I decided I wanted to become an artist. I had a burning desire to paint. I hungered to be taken seriously in the art world.” By 2004 her sketches had developed into her first series of work titled “The Connection Series.” Using circles, lines and symbols, many of the paintings depict men and women playing instruments. This was the series that I saw at our friends house. I wrote of Claudia’s work for her website, “Claudia’s work to me is reminiscent of the Mexican muralists of the late 19th and early 20th century, yet her work stands on its own today. Claudia truly stands out with her diversity in style and mediums. She has the ability to go from a modern contemporary style to traditional portraiture. A true talent!” Claudia is no slouch, and says, ”I just can’t stay still, I need to be doing something all the time, designing something...just having fun...I love designing. I think creativity in us goes in seasons, we

Stevens Elementary raising funds for planned SPARK Park By Betsy Denson betsy@theleadernews.com There was a lot of excitement in Oak Forest last spring when Stevens Elementary was chosen to receive a SPARK Park – which is a community park on public school grounds – but now the school needs the funds to complete it. As former Stevens Principal Lucy Anderson noted at the time, Stevens did not qualify for federal funding because 51% of households within a one-mile radius of the school could not be classified as low income per the latest census data. Stevens was just out of range at 49.7%. Anderson had already earmarked some school funds for the project and in the past six months Stevens supporters have worked to raise more money. The school has also received private donations. The total amount raised so far is about $50,000 − $50,000 to $70,000 short of what the school hopes to raise. Stevens staff and community are still optimistic, especially now that they have a rendering of the completed

Other features that have been discussed are a wooden deck underneath one of the trees that can serve as an outdoor classroom, installing bike racks in functional places, putting in additional shade, and having science tables at the end of the fifth grade hallway which would be useful during

Residents to see increases in property tax bills Harris County Tax Assessor-Collector Mike Sullivan today announced that nearly one million property tax bills are on the way to property owners. “This week 900,000 tax bills have been mailed and another 200,000 will go out in the next few weeks. By the end of the month, more than one million tax bills will be received by property owners,” said Tax Assessor-Collector Mike Sullivan. The Harris County region has had incredible growth. Harris County will receive $2 billion in tax revenues, the Houston Independent School District will receive $1.5 billion and the City of Houston will receive $1.1 billion in revenues. Municipalities, school districts and other taxing jurisdictions receive the remaining portion of revenues. Most taxpayers will see an increase in their tax bill. “Compared to last year’s tax bill, the average homestead throughout Harris County, Houston, the surrounding school districts and cities could see an increase of approximately $400 in property taxes,” said Mr. Sullivan. “I want all taxpayers to review their bill carefully to ensure they have all of the exemptions they are entitled to receive.” The Harris County Tax Assessor-Collector’s Office

messy projects. “We could just rinse them off,” Novak said. Baumgarten with SWA said that the design they’ve proposed really seeks to accentuate outdoor education and the ability to walk around. “There has been some discussion of work out stations, but we’re working through the cost right now,” he said. “Going forward we’ll look to students and parents for input on the art that happens in the park.” Barrientez said that construction will begin in May. What the school is able to accomplish with the park depends on the final amount raised. Novak said that some of the fundraising efforts in the works include SPARK nights at area restaurants and some kind of dinner at the school. “We have also tossed around the idea of a neighborhood movie night,” she said. There is also the need for in-kind donations like irrigation installation for some of the new trees and materials for the deck. They’d welcome demolition help as well. “I firmly believe there are people in the neighborhood who are willing and able to help,” Novak said. “I am excited to make this park a reality and not just a dream on paper.” Barrientez looks forward to the pride that the park will bring about in Stevens students and links it to their academic progress. “This park is a chance to make our outward appearance reflect the quality education we provide our students.”

Bill Joplin (center-right) came forward as the anonymous $6 million alumni donor Nov. 7.

St. Thomas High School alumni pledges $6 million to school For The Leader A St. Thomas High School graduate from 1954 stepped forward Nov.7 as the one responsible for a $6 million pledge to his alma mater as part of the school’s expansion initiative and campaign 4500Forever. Bill Joplin came forward as the donor during the district title game between the Eagles and the St. Pius X High School Panthers Friday evening, according to the St. Thomas High School website. Joplin’s reveal also came during the school’s Alumni Weekend celebration, and President Fr. Kevin Storey introduced Joplin to the crowd. “Not that long ago I never would have dreamed being here tonight, certainly never expected to be involved quite like this,” Joplin states on St

Thomas’ website. “But this campaign is so big for St. Thomas. We needed something to help get us over the hump.” Joplin stepped forward in mid-September to match dollar for dollar, each donation and pledge, up to $6 million and will continue that commitment through December 5 to assure maximum benefit to 4500Forever, according to the release. Since the “No Substitute For Victory Challenge” started, Joplin has generated $6.6 million, raising the 4500Forever total to $38 million. “Bill was an answer to our prayers, no doubt about it,” President Fr. Kevin Storey stated. “He guaranteed the success of the campaign and transformed it. Having that size boulder go into the pond mid-way through our

fundraising effort sent a reverberating belief of accomplishment and confidence to our community.”

and land space to enable the Basilian Fathers to continue their educational mission into the next century while maintaining the STH urban identity at the 4500 Memorial Dr.,” according to the school’s website. According to the release, Joplin opted to remain unknown, preferring that the attention be given instead to the 4500Forever initiative. “We already had a great team,” Storey stated on STH’s website. “Bill Joplin was adding that clutch hitter, that difference-maker in the middle of our lineup, someone who creates confidence and energizes his teammates to dig deeper, demand more from themselves, perhaps even reach a level they didn’t realize was possible.”

Football: Area schools head into post-season Excitement is mounting at Leader-area high schools as it’s playoff time once again for many local football teams. The St. Thomas High School Eagles and St. Pius X High School Panthers faced off against one another Nov. 7, with STH claiming victory of its rivalries and gaining its third consecutive district title. The Eagles won by a score of 38-14 and also marked the school’s 19th straight home win, according to the STH website. On STH’s website, Head Coach Tim Fitzpatrick called the third straight champion-

ship win “sweet.” “I told the guys enjoy it, but it’s not the be-all end-all,” Fitzpatrick stated. That was one of our goals at the start but just one, just a stepping stone to bigger and better things deeper in the playoffs.” With the win, the Eagles improved to a 9-1 record for the season with the Panthers at an 8-2 record. St. Pius X will play against Bishop Lynch High School (7-4) at 7 p.m. Nov. 14 at home and the Eagles will host the winner of the Argyle Liberty Christian Concordia Lutheran in the regional round of the TAPPS 5A state playoffs

either Nov. 21 or Nov. 22. The Waltrip High School Rams finished the season with a 6-4 overall record following a decisive 45-20 win over Lee High School Nov. 8. The Rams will be playing against the Stratford High School Spartans (7-3) at 7 p.m. Nov. 14. Lung cancer screening at Memorial Hermann Northwest Hospital A new Lung Cancer Screening Program at Memorial Hermann Northwest Hospital helps individuals who are at high risk for lung cancer receive a diagnosis and treatment plan at an early stage when the disease is more treatable and curable. “After two decades of research and advocacy, the U. S. Preventive Services Task Force recently issued its final recommendation approving screening for those at risk for lung cancer,” said Arthur Hamberger, M.D., radiation oncologist affiliated with Memorial Hermann Northwest. “This recommendation sets the stage for both public and private insurance coverage of lung cancer screening and is expected to save tens of thousands of lives.” Lung cancer typically does not cause symptoms in its early stages. The cancer is often advanced when symptoms do occur. Symptoms such as persistent cough, coughing up blood, wheezing or shortness of breath, recurrent pneumonia or bronchitis, chest pain, hoarseness, weight loss and loss of appetite, bloody or rust-colored spit or phlegm, and fever without a known cause may also be signs of many other lung problems.

Up to 90 percent of all lung cancers are thought to result from smoking. In addition to cigarette smoking, daily cigar smoking greatly increases risk. Nonsmokers who are frequently exposed to secondhand smoke also face an increased risk. Other risk factors include exposure to asbestos, radon, or ionizing radiation; lung scarring from chronic infections; and family history of lung cancer. “The most significant risk factor for lung cancer is smoking. Even if you have smoked for decades, stopping now can reduce your risk of developing lung cancer,” added Dr. Hamberger. “As with other types of cancer, early detection increases a patient’s chance of survival.” The Lung Cancer Screening Program at Memorial Hermann Northwest strives to detect lung nodules and potential lung cancer early, allowing for a greater chance of being treated and cured. Individuals who are interested in determining if they are at high risk to develop lung cancer should talk with their primary care physician, call Memorial Hermann Northwest at 713867-3336 or visit memorialhermann.org.
