Noted Design opens in the Heights By Zarah Parker zarah@theleadernews.com Noted Design Co., the stationery store that was reported on in July by one of The Leader’s Media Camp students, has officially opened in the Heights. Created by Allison Mattingly and Angie Coussirat, Noted was spurred by the duos passion for paper. As self-proclaimed, “paper people,” they wanted to bring paper back into everyone’s life. “I noticed as people are leading a more digital life, there’s been this return of quality paper products, and people wanting a physical planner or to send a nice card,” said Mattingly. From there, Mattingly thought about how nice it would be to have a local place to get quality paper products. She then brought in Coussirat who has a background in graphic design. “At the same time, we were both bullet journaling and so we connected on that, and thought how great would it be to have a spot you could have all the supplies you need for bullet journaling, and then we could do greeting cards and stationery,” said Coussirat. If it has to do with paper, that’s what they were focused on when filling the store with goodies. From Journals, notebooks, pens, and cards, to gift wrap and pencil bags, the space is dedicated to the appreciation of paper. Noted will soon offer workshops regularly. The first one coming in November will be an introduction to bullet journaling. “It’s basically introducing the process to people who are interested in learn-

ing how to take just a blank notebook and create your own planner out of it with this structured system,” said Mattingly. Bullet journaling allows you to truly create something unique that fits your needs and style. And though some people can be intimidated by a blank place, the workshop will show how to use different layouts and techniques. Even if bad handwriting is a worry, they have stickers and rulers to keep everything in line. “I could just go and get a spiral notebook from Walmart, or wherever for a dollar, but if you have something that’s beautiful and a really nice pen, it kind of makes you feel fancy in a way without being expensive,” said Mattingly.

Eventually at Noted they want to host thank you letter writing happy hours, where people can come in and get a card or bring one in and they will mail it out for them. They will also host modern calligraphy classes. Coussirat offers custom designs on paper products, like personalized stationery and note cards for customers. “A lot of [the graphic design] is going to be based on what the community needs,” said Coussirat. As locals, the Noted duo wanted to bring paper goods to the community, so they wouldn’t have to look all over Houston to find great products. “We’re listening to the neighborhood and the consumer, so as they come in they’re like, ‘oh I really wish you had this’,” said Mattingly, “So, if we don’t have something that people are interested in, just let us know. Oct. 9 was Noted’s official open date, but they’ll be throwing a grand opening party, complete with giveaways, on Nov. 3. Find them at 1901 Lawrence St.

his doctors and therapists to push him harder. By the time the professionals at TIRR let him go home, Connor was spending his time helping other patients. His mother, Deanna Bazar, would have to wander the facility just to find him. “He was often visiting with one despondent patient or another, sharing his own journey. Thanks to his encouragement, Connor’s new friends would realize there really was hope. One of the patients there was deeply depressed. He would sit in his room with the lights off and a sign on the door saying, ‘stay out,’ Connor’s mother remembered. “He would just wheel himself into the man’s room and say, ‘Hi! I’m coming in!’ Then he’d share his optimism with the man, serving as an inspiration. In fact, that was the last thing Connor did the day we picked him up at TIRR – encouraging another patient. That’s just how Connor is,” Bazar stated. What do his doctors say now? “My doctors are very, very pleased and impressed with my progress. I have learned a lot. I have learned that I must stay positive, or I’ll miss the fun - the good stuff will just pass by. I am also setting new goals and hoping to reach all of them
ahead of schedule,” Connor stated with a smile. His new goals include completing his Eagle Scout final,
getting his driver’s license within the year, and, notably, walking by his senior prom next year.

Eight weeks ago, Connor Bazar was a 16-year-old kid looking forward to his Junior year at Waltrip High School. The teen was a champion gymnast, the football team’s “Rammy” mascot, an excellent student, and a friend to many others. Then life pitched Connor a curve ball. A week prior to the start of school, the teen was practicing his gymnastic moves at a local fitness center by executing a flip he had done “1,000 times before.” This time would be different. A bad landing resulted in a cervical spinal cord injury that left Connor paralyzed and attached to a ventilator. Still, on Saturday, Oct. 20, just seven weeks later, the same teen was out in his electric wheelchair completing his final project for Eagle Scouts by renovating the grounds of Oaks Christian Church in Oak Forest. The renovation included power-washing large swaths of concrete and trimming many hedges. About 40 of Connor’s scouting friends showed up to help. “He has always been remarkable, even as a toddler,” stated neighbor John Sweney. “As soon as Connor could walk, he was off and running. There was no stopping him. No one knows what the outcome of this injury will be, but Connor’s always been amazing, and he’s doing it again.” Soon after the teen’s accident, he spent six hours in surgery, then moved into world-renowned TIRR Memorial Herman for physical therapy. There, Connor made a decision: he would face his new physical challenges head-on; excel in the face of adversity, and avoid self-pity. The teen progressed from one step to the next faster than any of his doctors predicted. Today, he is breathing on his own, and he is speaking well.
