Natural Pawz opens in Oak Forest By Kim Hogstrom For The Leader
You may have noticed all the commotion on the northwest corner of Ella Boulevard and 42nd Street last weekend. Nestled in the retail center were colorful signs, a wading pool full of pet toys, and leashed, live puppies playing among the many people coming and going. The party was to celebrate the opening of Natural Pawz pet foods, and pet owners throughout the community are delighted. What has our neighbors so jazzed about pet food? Natural Pawz features locally produced, nutritious, organic foods. With the Oak Forest opening, the company is celebrating its 17th Houston-area location and its 12th birthday. “It’s our first day, and we have been crazy busy. We love Oak Forest, it’s so beautiful, and this store may be our busiest yet!” said store manager Elizabeth Sacco during the party. “Americans know that a healthy diet helps people live longer,” explained Biff Picone, co-owner and Founder of Natural Pawz. “And people know the same is true for pets. A healthy diet with quality ingredients and fewer fillers, helps prevent the increasing a number of diseases we

see in our pets: diabetes, cancer and more. Nutrition has the same benefits for our furry family as it does us.” Picone and his wife and business partner, Nadine Joli-Coeur, discov-
ered this first hand. In 2001, the couple adopted a chocolate Labrador Retriever named Callie. Soon, Callie started suffering from food allergies that caused hair loss, hot spots and severe itching.
“We took Callie to the veterinarian and started her on steroid shots. It helped, but she needed the shot about every six weeks. One day the vet said, ‘You know, each time I give your dog this shot, I am shortening
her life,” explained Picone. I said, ‘Put that needle down!’ Then we left and never returned,” stated co-owner and Founder Nadine Joli-Coeur. The couple decided to experiment and adjust the dog’s diet but their choices of foods were limited to companies which utilize fillers. After research, they found a small pet food business specializing in whole, organic ingredients and very little fillers such as the corn, or even peanut shells found in larger company foods. With this change, Callie’s symptoms improved. “Natural Pawz grew organically,” said Joli-Coeur. “It happened through word-of-mouth. By 2005, so many people were seeing positive outcomes and wanted the same products we were feeding Callie, we started to view making the pets foods as a sort of calling. Biff and I left our tech jobs and went to work at Natural Pawz full-time.” Other features offered at Natural Pawz are its pet baked goods. These wonderful treats are created by locally owned Doggie Express, and each is dairy-free, gluten-free, human-grade, and organic. Stop by for a pint of almond milk-based peanut butter-banana-bacon ice cream, or a See Pawz P. 3B

Photo contributed Chris Huang was hoping to find restaurant space in the area when a spot at Ella Plaza became available. Now he has something to dance about.
Flying Pho set to rock Ella Plaza’s late night By Betsy Denson betsy@theleadernews.com If you are the kind of person who finishes up with your Netflix binge well after midnight with a hankering for pho, then you are going to love Chris Huang’s new endeavor in Braun Enterprises’ Ella Plaza. Huang, the proprietor of Ninja Ramen on Washington Avenue, will open his second restaurant, Flying Pho in Ella Plaza. It will take the place of the recently vacated bagel shop Toasted. Flying Pho will
be open until midnight and will deliver until 2 a.m. “I wanted to convey our delivery service in a fun way,” said Huang of the name choice for the restaurant. While Ninja Ramen is inspired by Japanese cuisine, Flying Pho will feature Vietnamese cuisine, which is in turn an amalgamation of French and Chinese food. Huang says the recipes are his and he will do a little of the cooking as well. “I’m a noodle guy through and through,” said Huang. Generally, there’s a larger
menu at pho restaurants, but Huang is keeping it “super simple” – with pho, egg rolls and pastries. The pho will be a northern style pho, which is different from other restaurants in Houston that serve a southern variety of the noodle soup, made with either chicken or beef. “The northern style is original and good too,” he said, noting that although pho has been around for more than 20 years in Houston, it has been more mainstream for the last 10 to 15 years.

Coldwell Banker agents aim for local satisfaction landan@theleadernews.com
Coldwell Banker United, REALTORS® is a full-service real estate company serving the Greater Houston metro area, and the company also has a foothold right here in the Heights. Agents Bob Medeiros and David Sternbaum have run the operations for Coldwell Banker United, REALTORS® Heights office at 1505 Heights Blvd. for several years, working both the residential and commercial markets centered in the Heights. Working with 35 independent agents, Sternbaum and Medeiros have helped list and sell over 100,000 square feet of property, two office buildings and a recently-sold 65-unit project here in the Heights. Sternbaum, who came to the Heights in 2002, feels he and Medeiros’ (who has been in the Heights since the early 90s) operation is unique on the commercial side of the business in that both agents come not only from a residential background, but also in that the business partners work collaboratively on most properties, after one of their agents feeds the pair information on a listing. “You get the same amount of service, but you’ve got two people working for you — we’re interested in making sure everybody’s happy, and we complement each other extremely well,” Sternbaum said. Both Medeiros and Sternbaum knew the other having crossed paths in the world of

real estate, and the more the two talked a few years ago, the more they realized it could be mutually beneficial to themselves and the community to form a partnership, which now has them overseeing Coldwell Bankers’ Heights office. “These types of transactions can be very complicated, and it’s always positive when you have two people involved, sharing ideas and discussing any issues,” Medeiros said. “It just gives us a better opportunity to give good customer service when working side-byside.” Both work on all property listings, but with Medeiros’ expertise being more in marketing and Sternbaum excelling more in the construction and business side of things, they form the perfect team to help get a home or commercial property listed. “We’ll get a listing, both go through our own processes of determining the pricing value, then we’ll sit down and talk — two heads are better than one,” said Sternbaum, a licensed realtor since the 1970s. “We look at it not only as agents, but from the ownership standpoint. I know what I’m looking at when I’m working for a client, or when we’re listing it, I can sit with the owner and let them know what they need to think about.” For more information on Coldwell Banker United, REALTORS® Heights office, see their agents or view current listings, readers can visit coldwellbankerhomes.com/tx/ houston/office/heights/oid_ 13390/ or call 713-869-0456.

Opening from P. 1B delicious “pupcake. “Most of our customers buy treats for both their pets and themselves, stated Doggie Express owner Kelly Long with a smile. (We tried a cranberry oatmeal doggie treat, and we know for a fact she is correct. It was divine.) Natural Pawz also takes pride in being a good citizen of the community. There is always something going on. “We like to give local pet rescues a place to meet the public and adopt out pets, said manager Sacco. “And sometimes we hold ‘doga’ classes. That’s yoga with dogs. Readers can check on our website to see our activities on the calendar. So stop by, say hi, and grab a cup of catnip for Fluffy, or a pupcake for Rover. And don’t forget at least one cranberry oatmeal treat for the road.

Pho from P. 1B Beer and wine will be on the menu as well as Vietnamese coffee. Huang said he has friends in the Garden Oaks area and found the area “very cool residential but not a suburb and was looking for a restaurant space when the former Toasted spot became available. “I feel like the Heights is more and more commercial, he said. “This [area] is like the Heights 10 years ago. Harvey pushed the permitting process for the restaurant back a bit, but Huang hopes to be open by December. Excitement on social media about the restaurant was immediate. “They have some real competition with PhoLe on Antoine, wrote one on the Oak Forest Homeowners Association page. “But the differing hours will be nice. Excited! In addition to the late hours, Huang also says he plans to open some days earlier in the morning, at 11 a.m. For those nursing more than the usual morning fuzzies, there will be electrolytes and Excedrin along with the pho. “For the hangover hour, he says.

Art Valet: Vietnam War Veteran coming to The Book Scene
Sunday & Monday we will be closed for private events for small & large groups. Join us for Dim Sum lunch Tuesday - Saturday!
From 1 - 3 p.m. on Saturday, October 7, Dr. Samuel Axelrad will be coming to The Book Scene in Oak Forest, located at 1820 W. 43rd St. (contributed photo).
S
aturday afternoon, The Book Scene will host a “Peaceful Bones book signing by Vietnam War Veteran and prominent Houston Doctor Samuel Axelrad, M.D. The event takes place on Saturaday, Oct. 7 at the Oak Forest book store, located at 1820 W. 43rd from 1-3 p.m. A few months ago, I heard about this book in a very different way than most, from the author’s brother. I sat enthralled as he told me the story of how Axelrad, his son Chris and grandson traveled to Vietnam to find out what happened to “Charlie. Charlie was a patient of Axelrad’s when he served as an army surgeon commanding a Forward Medical Company in the First Air Cavalry in 1967 during the Vietnam War. I was fascinated by how people, events and circumstances, almost effortlessly reunited the patient and Doctor even over thousands of miles and four decades later. Especially, since the two were on opposite sides of the war. Peaceful Bones is about one special patient named Hung Nguyen aka “Charlie who becomes an unlikely friend on the battlefield. Dr. Axelrad saves Charlie’s life, forging a bond that crosses cultural and
enemy lines. Their reunion, 46 years after losing touch in 1967, was a moving and inspiring moment that made history around the world. Peaceful Bones is Dr. Axelrad’s stories of the war, his life, and the uncanny “coincidences that brought him and Charlie together twice in one lifetime Why am I telling you this? I love reading, a good story and this book is inspiring, especially these days as we seem to constantly come up against an enemy with no face. Axelrad was known to me as Uncle Sammy to my cousins and me growing up, too. Peaceful Bones will be available for purchase at The Book Scene following the event. Visit www.peacefulbones.com First Saturday Arts Market is back this weekend with many new faces, including a very surprising change for artist Charlie Hardwick, also known as Uncle Charlie. The former graphic designer and poster artist told me he is focusing on his music these days as his deteriorating eyesight continues to worsen. Hardwick and fellow musician and friend Greg Henkel will perform noon - 1:30 p.m. Expect a mix of Americana

The Mystery of Edwin Drood
8 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 7 Obsidian Theater - 3522 White Oak Dr. The winner of five Tony Awards when it played on Broadway, “The Mystery of Edwin Drood is a riotous, interactive whodunit mystery that invites the audience to enter the action and play detective. Its tale of a mysterious murder in the small town of Chesterham, England derives from Charles Dickens’ unfinished novel of the same name. Though Dickens died before he could finish the book, he left plenty of daffy, delightful suspects behind to sift through, and you and your fellow audience members will get to decide who the culprit is. The Obsidian Theater’s production is for musical and mystery fans alike plays at in Houston.
