Timbergrove forms rare bond with mail carrier By Adam Zuvanich azuvanich@theleadernews.com Naquetta Foote considers herself a loving, kindhearted person who often gives to others, but she hasn’t always received the same treatment in return. Foote, known as Shay by friends and family, is a single mother of three kids who said her kindness often has been taken for granted. She said she had been having an especially tough time as of late and was in need of a pick-me-up. A group of Timbergrove Manor residents, who were strangers to Foote a little more than a year ago, recently provided that boost. Last Sunday afternoon they held a block party in honor of Foote, who has endeared herself to the neighborhood since becoming its mail carrier for the United States Postal Service during the summer of 2018. “Tears came to my eyes, because it just feels amazing,” Foote said. “I had no idea this was coming, and it just came right at the right time. Black and orange balloons line the fence, fall decorations cover the porch and about 1,000 pumpkins are scattered across the front lawn. The pumpkins are stacked on the front steps, organized in threes around the lawn and positioned in circles around trees. Ghost pumpkins, or white pumpkins, line the front walk that leads to the house. People have gathered outside of the historic Heights home that houses Greenwood King Properties to partake in this pumpkin patch for the last 20 years. The attendees are families from the neighborhood and clients of Greenwood King Properties, plus agents from all Greenwood locations. But everyone is welcome to the pumpkin patch, which this year will be held on Saturday, Oct. 19 from 10 a.m.-noon. “The neighborhood really looks forward to it,” said Lorraine Abercrombie of Greenwood King Properties. “We have people who have come from the beginning and ask when it’s going to be every year.” See Pumpkin P. 8A

There are 14 candidates vying for the District C seat on the Houston City Council. Eleven of them participated in a public forum Kamin last week in Garden Oaks, where they talked about themselves and the key issues facing one of the most dynamic parts of the city. Meyers Afterward, multiple attendees said they felt good about their options for District C, where Mayor Pro Tem Ellen Cohen is approaching her eight-year term Smith limit. They just weren’t sure which options were better than the others. “I don’t think there’s a frontrunner yet,” Garden Oaks resident Erik Wipf said. “I think it’s a wide-open race.” Less than a month before the Nov. 5 municipal election, many District C voters might be undecided. But in terms of fundraising, one candidate has a decided advantage over the others. Abbie Kamin, a civil rights attorney and Heights-area resident who is running for public office for the first time, had a contribution balance of nearly $178,000 according to a campaign finance report filed with the city on Monday. The candidate with the nexthighest balance, Greg Meyers, reported a total of less than $37,000.
