Two sisters, two bouts with cancer By Betsy Denson betsy@theleadernews.com It’s the phone call no woman wants to get from their doctor the day after their mammogram, but for Renie Kristynik, co-owner of Buffaloe Floor Covering on Pinemont Dr., there was a sense of ‘here we go again.’ Six years earlier, their mother, who had survived an earlier bout with breast cancer, died of sarcoma. That same year, Kristynik’s sister Denie Lunsmann was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. While Lunsmann is now in remission, it was Kristynik’s turn to fight. She even used the same oncologist, Dr. Veena Chandrakar in Cypress, as had her family members. “We went back in to repeat the test to see if it was a false read and then did the biopsy,” said Kristynik, who was 63 years old at the time of diagnosis. “It was invasive ductal carcinoma.” According to breastcancer.org, invasive ductal carcinoma, sometimes called infiltrating ductal carcinoma, is the most common type of breast cancer. About 80% of all breast cancers are invasive ductal carcinomas.

For Kristynik, initial treatment was a lumpectomy and then chemo and radiation once tests showed that the cancer had a high rate of recurrence. Kristynik said that her sister was a “wealth of knowledge” and her husband was “over the top supportive” which made what she would face a lot easier. Her chemotherapy was four sessions over 12 weeks, once every three weeks. Each session was a five or six hour process where Kristynik was given two kinds of chemo, anti-nausea meds and hydration. Her husband and her childhood best friend accompanied her and Kristynik said that they had a lot of good conversations, and got some coloring done. While initially easy, the sessions got increasingly taxing. Her hair feel out and came back curly, “like a poodle’s”, but Kristynik said her hairdresser has told her that sometimes it goes back to the natural texture. And in the big scheme of things, it’s a minor issue. Radiation followed for seven weeks. Kristynik would go every day for five days Monday through Friday for 20 minSee Sisters P. 2B

ter an abnormal diagnostic mammogram, the Center offers same-day ultrasound and, if needed, a breast biopsy. “We want to eliminate the worry for our patients and make sure they leave here confident and comfortable with their plan of care,” says Jennifer Johnston, manager of outpatient imaging at Memorial Hermann Greater Heights. “If there is an area of concern after reading the mammogram, our breast specialist will immediately speak with the patient and offer to conduct an additional mammography or ultrasound. Based on those test results, if the breast biopsy is needed, we can usually perform that while the patient is here.” For patients unable to stay for additional testing, a return appointment is made before they leave. In addition to the 3-D mammography and ultrasound, the Center also performs ultrasound-guided breast biopsies, stereotactic needle biopsies, fine-needle aspirations and breast MRIs. Catering to Women “We know women are busy, so we want to accommodate their needs,” says Johnston.

Advanced 3-D imaging technology, expedited diagnostic services, extended hours and other amenities make the Breast Care Center at Memorial Hermann Greater Heights Hospital the go-to choice for screening and diagnostic breast services in The Heights. Tomosynthesis detects smaller breast tumors The Center now boasts leadingedge 3-D digital breast tomosynthesis. This innovative imaging technology can detect smaller breast tumors by eliminating the problem of overlapping breast tissue where potential cancers can hide with traditional 2-D mammography. It is particularly beneficial to women with dense breast tissue. “The ability to peel back layers with tomosynthesis is a tremendous advance,” says Ajanta Patra, M.D., a dedicated breast radiologist affiliated with the Memorial Hermann Breast Care Center - Greater Heights. “Not only can we detect smaller tumors at

Most of us have heard the dire statistics on breast cancer in America: about one in eight women stands a chance of fighting the battle in her lifetime. That’s terrifying. However, there’s a better statistic on breast cancer that’s worth sharing. According to a study conducted by the Stanford University School of Medicine, women who are active in breast cancer support groups live an average of 50 percent longer than those who aren’t. “We all need to feel connected to one another as human beings,” stated Dorothy Gibbons, Chief Executive Officer for The Rose. “The support provided by other women who are going through the medical and emotional journey of breast cancer can be of great help to those who are doing the same.” Gibbons is also the co-founder of the Houston-based nonprofit agency, The Rose, and knows what she is talking about. The Rose has reduced deaths in our area by providing access to screening, diagnostics, and treatment services to women regardless of their ability to pay. The Rose addresses barriers that keep a woman from proper breast cancer care. “At The Rose, our greatest need

“For me, there was already a support network. I knew women with whom I could share and ask for help. Also, I was treated at MD Anderson and had access to an large network of resources and medical assistance. Many women do not have those kinds of assets,” she said. Cari decided that knowledge was her best defense; she learned as much as she could which, she explained, helped keep fear at bay. What did she learn that she wants people to know? “There are more and more incidences of breast cancer showing up in younger women. This is no longer an old lady’s disease,” Cari stated. Celebrated Heights artist Thedra Cullar-Ledford is not only a breast cancer survivor, but the challenge has motivated her remarkable artwork. Some of her conceptual art is funny, some is angry, but most of it is about being a woman which includes strong statements about “women’s boobs, both having them and losing them,” she states. Currently Cullar-Ledford has a show hanging at the Contemporary Arts Museum Houston titled “LadyPart Follies” until the week before Thanksgiving. On opening night at the CAMH, she filled a giant boob

Awareness really matters Did you know?

Harris County sees the greatest amount of newly diagnosed breast cancer cases in women in Texas. Every year, an average of 2,295 new cases are diagnosed, according to the National Cancer Institute and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime. Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in women. Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death among women. Each year it is estimated

that over 246,660 women in the United States will be diagnosed with breast cancer and more than 40,000 will die. Although breast cancer in men is rare, an estimated 2,600 men will be diagnosed with breast cancer and approximately 440 will die each year.

On average, every two minutes a woman is diagnosed with breast cancer and one woman will die of breast cancer every 13 minutes. Over 2.8 million breast cancer survivors are alive in the United States today. Nationalbreastcancer.org website provided information.

Sisters from P. 1B utes each time. “I called it the Star Wars machine,” she said. “I laid on the table and got zapped.” The radiation on top of the chemo brought great fatigue, but Kristynik still managed to get to all of grandchildren’s school events. During her treatment she worked from home for the family business that her parents started – and that her sister and both their husbands work at too. Kristynik finished treatment last May and is cancer free, but will go for special screenings from here on out. Kristynik said that her early detection was what allowed her treatment to be so successful. “I’m living proof that early detection works,” she said. “It wasn’t going to get me down. Breast cancer treatment has come so far. From day one, all the doctors said ‘you’re going to be fine’ and it was.” Interestingly, although her mother and grandmother had breast cancer, and Kristynik’s sister had ovarian cancer, they were tested for the BRCA1 and BRCA2 gene mutations – and the tests came back negative. “My doctor says she sees this from time to time,” said Kristynik. “The genetic link isn’t there on the tests.”

Then in your merciful eyes it will become your favor not mine. Amen. Say this prayer for 3 days, promise publication and favor will be granted. Never known to fail. T.S.

When I found myself terrified at 3 a.m., I could post about it and I would get support from everywhere immediately. I have also made friends that I will have for life thanks to Flat & Fabulous. It is wonderful.” We all have mothers, sisters, friends and associates who could be called into battle. How can we help fight breast cancer? “I am asked that a lot,” added Cari. “First, I say early

The treatment of breast cancer is an ever-evolving science, with cutting-edge treatment options and facilities springing up—and two area hospitals are doing their part to keep pace with advancements and accommodate patients’ needs. As the calendar turns to October and the yearly focus on breast cancer awareness, The Leader decided to take a look at some of the potentially lifesaving practices and advancements at St. Joseph Medical Center and Memorial Hermann Greater Heights. One of Memorial Hermann Greater Heights calling cards is its offering of tomosynthesis at the hospital’s Breast Cancer Center. Tomosynthesis signifies a major leap forward with its ability to detect smaller tumors at the earliest possible stage “It reduces their anxiety simply by not having to come back multiple times,” MHGH Nurse Navigator Angela Sisk said. Over at St. Joseph , installation of state-of-the-art CT Scanners, new Brachytherapy therapy equipment and latest model of the linear accelerator are in the process of being

phased in. “The patients are going to have every technological advantage that can be provided through advances,” said Dr. Melissa Joyner, board-certified radiation oncologist on the medical staff at SJMC. Just as vital to the treatment and healing process is support offered throughout the journey. Every breast cancer patient at MHGH is assigned a nurse navigator, who stays with the patient from diagnosis to treatment and beyond into survivorship. “We’re there to help if they have any barriers to their care or any financial, transportation issues and put them in touch with community resources to help,” Sisk said. At St. Joseph, Joyner said every patient experiences a one-on-one session with a board-certified physician on every visit, and multiple meetings are had prior to treatment—an aspect she believes makes the dedicated staff unique. “Just that difference—providing that continuity of care— makes a huge difference in a patient’s cancer program from start to finish,” she said. “They get the best of both worlds. You elevate care just by that alone.”

Hundreds flocked to the SPJST Lodge on Beall Street last Wednesday, Sept. 28 for the annual Senior Expo, where dozens of vendors ranging from banking institutions, hospitals and retirement facilites to accessories and retirement information lined the ballroom floor while seniors and their families browsed the plethora of options. “For me it’s information that I need for my life,” said Loree Vernon, who made her way to the Expo for the third consecutive year. “I find that everyone exhibiting here very much wants to talk you, so it’s very helpful.” Vernon noted the plethora of medical information available as a major plus for her attendance. “I don’t mean necessarily mean the information, just knowing the services are available in the neighborhood is great,” she said. Vernon Sokel, who was in his inaugural attendance of the event, echoed her thoughts wholeheartedly. “I didn’t know there were this many health care options avail-

able out there!” he exclaimed. “It’s interesting and informative, and she (my wife) told me they’ve got new people every year.” Fourth-year attendee Diana Sokol’s thoughts mirrored the previous two, adding that she pays special attention to financial options as she nears retirement. “It just helps keep you informed of what is being offered to you in the community,” she said. In the case of third-year attendee Chuck Blesener, the conglomeration of services together in one room keeps drawing him back no matter the circumstances. “If you need one of these services, you just call one of several,” he said. “It’s always better to do business with people living in your area.” As it wound down those interviewed could not express enough gratitude to all in attendance. “This gets better every time—more people, more exhibits and more quality,” Vernon said. “It’s fun seeing all the new vendors and this serves as a reminder of all that is being offered,” Diana Sokol added.

Heights linebacker a one-man sack machine By Jonathan Valadez For The Leader Heights High School linebacker Cody Roscoe experienced his first football memory when his father gave him his own ball as a child. It didn’t take long after that moment before he was taking part in the game. “I first started playing football with my siblings in the backyard,” Roscoe said. “I was the youngest and smallest, but I loved the game.” Fast forward to today, and Roscoe is a 6-foot1, 240-pound wrecking ball, who can be seen imposing his will on opposing quarterbacks under those bright Friday night lights. Although he’s played on varsity during all four years that he’s been a Bulldog, it wasn’t until last year that he started producing on the field at a high level. Roscoe played middle linebacker as a freshman and sophomore, but his position coach, Robert Toomer, decided to start training him at outside linebacker following his second year. “My defensive coordinator is probably the most knowledgeable man that I’ve met in football,” Roscoe said. “So whatever position he puts me at, I know it’s the right decision.” His coach’s intuition to move him to the outside would prove to be correct. Roscoe would go on to bring chaos to his opposition in his first year at his new position. He recorded 14 sacks, a number that would even challenge J.J. Watt. This season, Roscoe has already broken through the line and tackled the quarterback 13 times through six games. He’ll have at least four more chances to add to that number this

season. He also has a chance to break the school’s sack record, although it has yet to be confirmed. Head coach Stephen Dixon, who has been the coach at Heights since 2009, said that he Contributed photo did not know what the Heights High School record was, but that linebacker Cody Roscoe’s total was by Roscoe. far the most since he’s been there. Whether he’s close to the record, Roscoe said he does not care about individual accolades and that team success is more important. “If I am close to breaking the record, it’s not my focus in the game,” Roscoe said. “My focus is to cause havoc and make things easier for my teammates.” Roscoe’s play has gotten the attention of a few coaches, though. He already has three offers from the University of Incarnate Word, Northwestern State University and the University of Northern Colorado to play football in college. The linebacker said that his offers would not be possible if he didn’t have help from Dixon. “He loves to win, but he loves getting kids to the next level even more,” Roscoe said. “Coach does everything in his power to get his athletes noticed, and I respect him greatly for that.” He is undecided at the moment but said he would like to play at Tulane University if the opportunity arose.

I would like to play at the University of Texas at Austin. I can tell they are very talented, and I just love the atmosphere there. Their football program is phenomenal and the academics studies they offer are great.

What has been your most memorable moment/ game as a player so far?

What drew you to your respective sport(s) you are now playing/why do you play your respective sport?

My most memorable game was last year when we played Bellaire, and it was our first year in 6A. Everyone thought for sure they were going to beat us, but we beat them.

Lutheran High North wins homecoming

Heights High School’s Gomez named AOTW Obet Gomez Jr. has been named this week’s Raising Cane’s Athlete of the Week. In order to be nominated for Athlete of the Week, the player must have a minimum of a 3.0 GPA, be a leader in the classroom, as well as on the field.

Obet Gomez Jr.

I have played sports my entire life and have enjoyed every moment of it. I just love playing the game of football because of the competitiveness, fans and the love for the game. The most important one yet is the brotherhood we make as a team.

For The Leader Lutheran High North celebrated its Homecoming with both a JV and Varsity Football victory this past week. Students shared in celebrating the victory with the school fight song at the end of the game, while the marching band played. The school dance was held on campus Saturday evening and the dance floor was packed with students and their dates all night long. King A.G. Simba and Queen Amber Reyes danced to the Homecoming King and Queen dance and were eventually joined by the rest of the Homecoming court. Mythbusters: Cat Edition The calendar.

Dear Tabby, Quite often, I hear people spewing misinformation about cats--like “they’re evil,” “they’re unloving and distant,” and “they don’t need to be taken care of.” As a cat lover, this frustrates me to no end. Can you debunk some of these misconceptions about cats for your readers? Frustrated with feline fallacies in Forest West Dear Frustrated, I feel your pain. Unfortunately, there are still people who believe

all of the myths and negative fables about cats in our culture. While shelters and rescue groups have done an excellent job of educating the public about cats and their behaviors, it bears repeating that many people have got it all wrong, as far as cats are concerned. Here are a few of the most widely held fallacies about cats: Myth 1: Cats always land on their feet. Cats don’t have collarbones, their backbones are very flexible, and they are extremely graceful animals. This may have led to the old wives tale that they always land on their feet. However, the way your kitty is constructed is no guarantee he won’t be harmed in a fall. Myth 2: Declawing is an acceptable way to make peace with having an indoor cat Declawing is the surgical amputation of the first joint of each of a cat’s toes, and is increasingly

viewed as inhumane and a form of mutilation. Myth 3: Cats are aloof and unloving. Dogs make better pets. Cats can be very loving, if they’re treated kindly from an early age and feel safe and secure in their home. Dogs are--by nature--pack animals, while kitties are more independent. But cats can enjoy the same status in the family and are often just as loving, attentive and present as their canine buddies. Myth 4: Cats can be left alone for days on end. Cats shouldn’t be left alone all day and night without someone checking on them, interacting with them and cleaning their litter boxes. If you’re going out for more than 24 hours, hire a cat sitter or enlist a friend to check in on Fluffy. Cats can be left home alone while their owners are at work or out for relatively short periods, but they need things to do while the people are gone. Myth 5: Pregnant women can’t have cats. While toxoplasmosis (a virus sometimes found in cat feces) can cause flu-like symptoms in humans and even miscarriage, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention doesn’t recommend that pregnant women, or anyone else, give up their cats. Instead, the CDC advises thoroughly washing your hands after changing the litter box and using gloves if possible. Since cats can only contract the parasite in the first place

by eating contaminated raw or undercooked meat or consuming an infected rodent, the CDC also recommends keeping your cat inside and keeping its paws away from raw meat. Cats make excellent, loving and fun pets for people of all ages and lifestyles. If you encounter someone spewing these myths, set them straight then head them off to an animal shelter for more information. Do you have a question for Tabby?
