By Cynthia Lescalleet For The Leader For North Carolina transplants Andrea and Todd Waller, their ranch-style rental was a temporary house but not a home. They have now renovated the not-so-cozy bungalow in Norhill to maximize existing space and better highlight its vintage vibe. Among the examples: rope runs between shiplap panels like frosting between cake layers, adding some texture, contrast, and even insulation to the living room. And there’s a section of carefully preserved original wallpaper, worn and faded, and now sealed into an accent wall in the master bedroom. “You can see the character coming through,” Andi Waller says of the results. The Waller’s home is one of six properties featured on
the 2016 Norhill Bungalow Tour themed “Turn of the Century Homes, 21st Century Living and offered on Saturday, Oct. 15 from noon to 6 p.m. At just under 1,100 square feet – less than half the size of their previous digs – the 1930 bungalow was a project full of intentional choices, she says. “This home has taught us to value space and be thoughtful on using space…We had to ask ourselves who we want to be and what kind of life we want.” Their answer was to downsize and consider that decision “a lifestyle statement.” “Older homes have an energy and character,” she says. The homeowners are fine with the creaks and imperfections honed by decades of home use. “You have to ask what you are willing to accept.” Porch life Initially, the couple had seen the property online but did not bite. Months later, they were looking at properties in the area and happened upon it during an open house. “We saw lots of potential,”

A recent refurbishment of the façade at the Oak Forest Shopping Center has some tenants wanting to get the word out that they are still ready for business. Watches By Paulin, 1337 W. 43rd St. A, has been at the complex for 15 years. Jasmine Palomo said that after the scaffolding was put up over the storefront, people weren’t sure that they were open. “At first it was dead,” she said. “People would call ahead because they thought we had moved.” Once Weingarten put up banners for each business on the construction fence last weekend, the situation improved. “It’s getting back to normal,”
said Palomo. Optician and officer manager Dee Cabello at Today’s Vision/Dr. Esther Kovacs said that their customers knew they were open but were walking back and forth to find their specific entrance. The signs have helped with that issue too. Not everyone has seen an uptick in business. Shonte Johnson is a stylist and manager at Supercuts and said that there is still a decline in business. “People think we’re closed,” said Johnson, who nonetheless is looking forward to an upgraded façade. “We need one. [It’s] been there for years.” The affected shops include Watches by Paulin, Postnet, Allstate, the Washateria, the HPD substation, Today’s Vision and SuperCuts. Weingarten’s Marketing and Communications Director Carrie Murray said that the project is the second phase of work that was previously done for the other half of the building when PetSmart moved in. Karim Nooruddin is the owner of the portion of the center that includes Pizza Hut, Ideal Family Dentist and the plasma center as well as the land that houses Compass Bank. Put our 40 years of experience to work for you!
Become your own habitat scientist We’ve talked about the basics for attracting wildlife to our gardens by providing food, water, shelter and a place to raise young, and we’ve talked about practicing sustainable habits, with eliminating the use of chemicals in our yards or gardens, and buying plants that are native or well adapted to our ecoregion. Now we can just sit back and enjoy the wildlife that we’ve attracted, or we can go a step further and help out scientists that would like to expand their studies potential. It’s time to become a Citizen Scientist. A citizen scientist is someone who volunteers their time, effort, and resources toward scientific research. Everyone can be a citizen scientist. You don’t need to have a science background to participate in the projects, just a healthy interest and the gumption to collect and submit the data as the selected project requests. Citizen scientists support professional researchers by submitting data, sharing experiences and valuable information. The scientists then benefit from having more data to analyze, potentially from a larger area range and
Kim Ellis in a quicker time frame than they could have collected on their own. Citizen science programs vary in the topics, locations, durations and involvement. Topics vary from the smallest lizards and toads to bees and birds, butterflies and larger wildlife. Some of the most popular programs are run by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology with ProjectFeederwatch, NestWatch and eBird; the National Audubon Society with the Great Backyard Bird Count; and Journey North for the Monarch Butterfly migration. Each of these programs will provide you with a description of the data to be collected, the project time frame and geographical location. As some of the project names relate, you can sit in your own backyard and make
observations that could help a scientist working half way across the United States. All of these programs and more can be found in summary on the National Wildlife Federation website (https://www. nwf.org/Wildlife/WildlifeConservation/Citizen-Science.aspx). If you’d like to get involved in the Greater Houston area, the 2016 Prairie & Pollinators Month will be kicking off with events running from Oct. 7 Nov. 12. These events include native prairie tours, the Texas Pollinator Bioblitz, the Great Houston Wildlife Count, seed collecting, prairie plantings, a prairie teachers workshop, and a Monarch summit. More details and sign up information can be found on the Coastal Prairie Partnership website (www.prairiepartner. org). These are great events for the whole family. And if wildlife isn’t your thing, you can still be a citizen scientist helping out with projects related to astronomy, computers and technology, education, transportation and so much more. A great resource for finding open projects is www.scistarter. com. Everyone can help and contribute.

Kim Ellis’ Natural Passion After 20 years in the environmental field, I found my passion in the oddest of places, my own front yard. After a loss in the family, I looked to butterfly gardening to help with my healing process. As I looked at mine and my neighbors’ yards, I realized that a lot of the plants do absolutely nothing for our pollinators and other urban wildlife…. and so was born HABITATS.

Bungalow from P. 1B interior design. Her contractor husband runs Beam & Compass, which specializes in painting and tile services. In spite of − or perhaps because of − their redo backgrounds, scope creep hit. Their initial plan was to “just” replace some of the existing fixtures and add some cabinets. But then, as often happens, cosmetic changes gave way to bigger goals. “After putting so much energy, creativity, sweat, and love into our home, we decided we needed to think longer term,” she says. “We kept saying, ‘Well, we are this far…might as well go the rest of the way.’” That meant they reconfigured the kitchen’s cabinetry and replaced its flooring and countertops; they revamped the sole bathroom, knocked out a closet, and took some of the interior walls down to studs before reinstalling the aged shiplap. They also refinished hardwood floors, painted the exterior and interior, turned a small third bedroom into a big closet, and the list goes on, she says. Phase II might eventually add a second bathroom. “When you marry a designer you just have to know that she will say ‘We can just move some things around’ but what that really means is ‘Let’s scrap it all and start over,’” reads one of Todd Waller’s online quips about the evolving project. He and his crew-of-one, Gerson Cruz, handled most of the updates, other than trade specialties.
Every renovation has its surprises. For the Wallers, it was the persnickety kitchen floor, its vinyl tiles glued to plywood screwed into the original wooden floors they had hoped to refinish to match the rest of the home. But once revealed, after an arduous and lengthy demo, the boards were water damaged, rotted, and patched. The couple opted for tile instead. “In reality it worked out better,” she says. Tile is more accepting of any overspray and water park effects related to dish washing that at times is so exuberant it sometimes looks like the sink area might have been used to wash their 45-pound dog. For homeowners with similar renovation aspirations, make note that even wellplanned projects can take longer than expected, she advises. Despite having a timeline and all the finishes and fixtures picked in advance, things (and ideas) happen. “Patience is key,” she says. “Know your limits…If you decide to live in your home while doing the work, keep a space for yourself where you can escape the “mess.” Having a clean, organized, construction-free area will help keep you sane while everything around you is attempting to drive you insane.” For 2016 Norhill Bungalow Tour tickets or information, visit www.norhill.org. Despite a fast start, Panthers still have much to prove By Jonathan Valadez For The Leader For the second straight year, the St. Pius X Panthers are 5-0 on the season behind a highpowered offense. Compared to last year though, the Panthers are averaging almost 100 yards more through the air and about 40 more yards on the ground. At the helm of their offense is sophomore quarterback Grant Gunnell, who has already received several offers from Division-I programs. Last year, Gunnell saw limited playing time behind thensenior Clay Roberts in the first half of the season before getting an opportunity to start down the stretch. With Roberts graduated, Gunnell became the consensus starter at quarterback and has gotten the Panthers off to their hot start.
So far this season, he is averaging 402.8 yards a game and has connected with eight different receivers at least three times. Junior wide receivers Bryson Jackson and Jacob Jefferson and senior receiver Foster McLaurin are averaging over 100 reception yards per game and have combined to score 19 of the Panthers’ 29 receiving touchdowns. The rushing attack has also been dominant, as sophomore Justin Hull has racked up 607 yards. Hull is averaging an astonishing 8.1 yards per carry and has added four touchdowns as well. On defense, St. Pius has given up 40 fewer points than at this point last season. The unit has received contributions from many this year, as nine players are averaging over five tackles per game compared to just five last year.
They have also been able to get after the quarterback and already have one more sack than their entire 2015 season total. The one area where the defense has struggled has been their inability to intercept passes. So far, the team only has two such takeaways but has managed to recover seven fumbles. Heading into district, the Panthers should be considered the favorites since perennial powerhouse St. Thomas High School is going through an adjustment year. St. Thomas is 1-4 on the year in non-district action and has been outscored by an 17983 margin. They have arguably played the harder schedule though, as they’ve played the No. 34, No. 129 and No. 14 ranked teams in straight weeks.
If St. Pius does not end up winning district, they will still qualify for the playoffs since they play in a four-team division. Looking ahead to playoffs, the Panthers are just one of two teams in the entire Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools Division-I who are undefeated at this point. The Antonian College Preparatory Apaches are the other 5-0 team, but they have been able to feast on weaker teams like Floresville High School and Hondo High School. The Apaches did not reach the playoffs last year, and the two teams who did out of their district lost in the first round. Last year’s state champion, Prestonwood Christian Academy, is 3-1 and their sole loss came in a 70-21 blowout to 14th-ranked Episcopal High School. Prestonwood’s offense isn’t as explosive as the Pan-

thers, but they do a good job at protecting the football. The other team that will likely challenge the SPX’s path to a championship is last year’s state runner-up, Bishop Dunne Catholic, who also happened to beat the Panthers 38-21 in the state semifinal. Like Prestonwood, Bishop is also 3-1, and their sole loss came to the No. 1 ranked team in Arkansas. Their offense is not as dynamic as the Panthers and they also have trouble keeping the football, turning the ball over 14 times. Bishop’s defense is a destructive force that relies on
its ability to hurry the quarterback into making mistakes. So far this season, the team has forced 10 interceptions, six fumbles and has sacked the opposing quarterback 10 times. At the beginning of the year, St. Pius head coach Stephen Hill said his team’s goal was to win state and although the group is young, the talent is there. The road to the state championship will be long and bumpy, and the Panthers will need to remain focused and continue to play smash-mouth football if they expect to be playing in early December.

For The Leader Some places offer the chance at clothes that flatter a figure. Some offer advice or an ear to listen. However, a new Heights area shop offers both rolled into one convenient package. Beth Liebling, founder and owner of Darling Way, recognized the need for the shop following her divorce and accompanying realization that there was no place to turn for help rediscovering her romantic self. “It had been so long since I’d been in touch with that part of myself, she said. Sadly, she discovered a severe lack of concern for the romantic lives of mature adults even in terms of basics. She found little that wasn’t designed just for young supermodels, and no place which encouraged mature adults to embrace their figure. In fact, many people simply overlooked her as she browsed their stores. “People tend to look at older adults without recognizing any longing for romance. They don’t see a romantic soul, she said. “That’s when I realized I wanted to create a place where people could go, talk about dating, love and intimacy while also finding lingerie that flatters a mature figure. Everyone should feel confident, not silly, when they walk in. Darling Way’s unique boutique is full of romantic treasures, elegant gifts, vintage books, inspired menswear and gorgeous lingerie; but a wardrobe change just scratches the surface of what Liebling offers. As a former divorce lawyer and psychology major, she has long harbored a passion for talking with people about intimate issues and difficult situations. Thus Darling Way’s
true mission shines through, extending far beyond a shopping trip. “I’m a lawyer that doesn’t like to fight and I want people to be happy. So now I get to share people’s lives while encouraging more love, she said. “People feel comfortable telling me their secrets and talking to me even about their relationships and romantic desires or needs. Liebling says that while other stores offer clothing and intimate items, major distinctions exists—not only the elegant array of unique luxury apparel and accessories carried by Darling Way, but also the focus on relationships and intimacy, beyond what any pure retail vendor can offer. “Retail is the soapbox, because my passion is not retail. My passion is talking and starting conversations that otherwise aren’t happening, she said. “I want people to be loved and happy and walk around with a smile on their face—this is the way I can do it. Everyone deserves that. “Whether you’re solo or partnered, love starts from within, she added. She believes society has overlooked the connection between physical confidence, intimacy and overall health. Darling Way seeks to derail the prevailing sentiment that romantic intimacy stops or becomes boring in long term relationships. Liebling believes the accessories and wardrobe options Darling Way offers serve as an avenue for anyone to gain confidence and embrace joyful expressions of intimacy. “It should always be evolving and changing—that’s what keeps people together, she said. To view the selection of accessories, visit darlingway.com or go see the shop in person at 3423 White Oak Dr.
