The owners of Alabama Furniture commissioned mural artist Wiley Robertson to give historic Independence Heights a shout-out. Photo supplied.

Independence Heights gets some love By Kim Hogstrom For The Leader

When the owners of Alabama Furniture were informed that the building they leased in the Heights to house their resale business for 25 years, had been sold out from under them, they were horrified. Owners Sherri and Rion Enroth decided to find another place in the Heights. “We discovered that leases in the Heights were really high. Then we found our new location in the Independence Heights, and we are delighted. We love the new store and we absolutely love the community,”

Sherri Enroth said. To honor the rich history and creativity found in Independence Heights, the Enroths commissioned one of Houston’s celebrated mural artists, Wiley Robertson, to create a 9-foot by 40-foot permanent mural to honor the community. The work is located in the parking lot of the new store at 4900 N. Shepherd Dr., and has become something of a landmark. It is visible to north-bound traffic. “The Enroths wanted to celebrate Independence Heights, to give it a shout-out,” explained Robertson. “We tried to share that sense of pride with passerby and the community. There

are so many artists and people with interesting histories here, we wanted to give them some love.” Most Houstonians don’t know much about Independence Heights, the community roughly bordered by N. Shepherd Dr., Tidwell, the 610 Loop, and I-45. This sleepy patch with its old trees holds a prominent place in history; it was the first African American settlement in Texas. Homes started to appear in 1908, and by 1915, the community had a population of 600. In the late 1920s, there were more than 40 black-owned businesses including grocery stores, a lumber company, restaurants, a drug

Beer Institution Sold

Area staple Jimmy’s Ice House was sold to Braun Enterprises last week.

Braun buys Jimmy’s Ice House By Jim Reynolds Leader Correspondent

“

Jimmy’s Ice House, a Heights institution for nearly seven decades, is being sold. “Breaks my heart,” said Mike “Tuna” Coleman, a dedicated patron of more than 40 years. Jimmy’s owner, Rose Garden Holdings, is negotiating to sell the property at 2803 White Oak to Braun Enterprises, said Rose Garden managing partner Eric Quinn. The sale most likely won’t close before Mar. 31. Braun plans to lease the ice house to a third party, Quinn said. Braun did not respond to phone or email inquiries. “I don’t know what they’ll do with it,” Quinn said. Potential tenants, as yet unidentified, toured the building mid-January taking various measurements, said manager Audra Audy. “All things must pass,” said Jimmy’s regular Fred Kitziger. “With all the development around here, this place has had one foot in the grave and the other on a banana peel for several years. But I’m looking forward to seeing what happens.” Kitziger fondly described the ice house’s eclectic community role: Wedding receptions, wakes, memorials, golf tournament headquarters, White Oak Athletic Association functions, biker gatherings, cook-outs, all kinds of social events – a “town square,” he said. Rumors about the sale surfaced in early January, and then an ominous sign appeared behind the bar: “All Tabs Must Be Closed By February 1, and NO NEW TABS.”

Long-time customer reaction is predominately pessimistic. “Sad, sad, sad,” said Marie M., a self-described old-timer whose father was a friend of Jimmie Murray. “I like it the way it is. I don’t want it to change.” Sherry Griffith, a patron since the late 1950s, declared, “It’s sad because Jimmy’s is an institution. Heights people who’ve moved to other parts of Texas, always come back to Jimmy’s when they visit here.” Asked how long he’d been coming to Jimmy’s, Andrew Coker joked, “You mean legally?” Coker then speculated, “They’re going to lose their customer base if they change.” A patron who declined to reveal her name said angrily, “I hope they don’t turn it into a… yuppie bar!” Jim Settles bluntly said, “I’ll just find someplace else.” Jimmie Murray founded the bar in the late 1940s. Upon his death in 1994, ownership passed to son Frank Murray. Current owner Rose Garden Holdings consists of Eric Quinn, See Jimmy’s P. 2B

store, a blacksmith, and several law offices. The 2,186-acre Independence Heights was annexed by Houston in 1929, and today, it’s on the brink of a rebirth. It is home to 57,000 people of all ages, and walks of life. Many of the older residents can trace their family ties back to the area’s birth, and a few still raise chickens in their yards. Robertson was a natural choice to paint the mural. He grew up in the Heights, lives in the near north, and started painting at age 16. “I was inspired by the graffiti movement in the late 1990s when I was younger. I

started painting murals on buildings, and the work just kept getting bigger,” he said. As for the Enroths, Alabama Furniture reflects the community that surrounds it. Shoppers at the resale furnishings store can find an entertaining mix of everything from fine antiques to creative, modern furniture and decor. The couple recently added a second Independence Heights element to their parking lot – pet chickens in a large pen, complete with little biographies of each. The chickens have proven popular with visiting children. Bring the family and see.

What’s happening at 21st and Yale? By Betsy Denson betsy@theleadernews.com In 2016, developer Rocky Stevens purchased the former Dorsey’s Beauty Academy, 2103 Yale St., across the street from the Yale Street Grill. At the time, Stevens said he liked what’s happening on Yale and it was part of the reason he decided to invest in the area for the first time. The fact that the Dorsey’s location was near an intersection was another plus. “Most of our development is on strong corners in different parts of town,” he said. The property is being marketed by Collum Commercial as 21 Yale. In July the development signed a tenant - The Joint chiropractic. The Joint’s website states that their mission is “to improve quality of life through routine and affordable chiropractic care delivered through a nationwide network of modern, comfortable chiropractic clinics staffed with experienced, licensed chiropractors.” At the current time, Stevens says they don’t have a lead tenant for the space and won’t start buildout until they do. He says there is 3,500 to 4,000 square feet available for a res-

Makeover for White Oak shopping By Betsy Denson betsy@theleadernews.com The White Oak Bayou Village shopping center at W. Little York Rd and Antoine Dr., along the White Oak Bayou Greenway trail continues its makeover. Joanna Laufer with Nankani Management, LLC reports that they have one major renovation update. “We are about halfway done with window walls and glass storefront that we added to the front side of the bayou building, where there was previously just a plain stucco wall,” she said, “We have a new tenant as well - Love 146.” Love146 is a U.S.-based 501 non-profit international human rights organization that works toward the abolition of child trafficking and exploitation. The 17-acre, 165,000square-foot aging strip mall, was the first Chuck E Cheese in the Houston area. Now it is home to a number of tenants. Here’s a quick rundown: Raspado Xperts – 5647 W. Jimmy’s from P. 1B Danny Krienke and Marion Murray, Frank’s widow. Even if the new operators make no changes, Quinn said, they won’t be using the names “Jimmy’s Ice House” or “Jimmie’s Place,” business tags that Quinn owns. Also, renovation would be problematic. Due to multiple additions and remodeling across the decades, with numerous “grandfathered” improvements that would now be subject to building codes, most renovation short of demolition could be prohibitively expensive, Quinn said. Patrons recall from well into the 1990s the unassuming albeit noteworthy qualification on the Jimmie’s sign: “Just Beer.” “That came from major hassles Frank (Murray) had with the alcohol authorities,” explained customer P.J. McEwan. “He tried to use ‘ice cold beer’

on the sign, but they were such nit-picky jerks about temperature and so forth, he got frustrated and finally settled on ‘just beer.’ “ Jimmy’s Ice House T-shirts proclaim, “If you don’t like it here, go somewhere else.” Inside a cover featuring a beautiful fruit-and-cheese platter, the bar’s wine list reads “Red, White, Pink.” Customers enjoy watching and feeding the large turtles living in Gostic Spring, a White Oak Bayou tributary off the property’s west border. The hardiest Jimmy’s patrons brave all weathers on the quiet covered patio out back, sipping beer and addressing the world’s problems. Bill Wheeler, who walks to Jimmy’s most days, summed up the prevailing sentiments. “I hate what’s happening to the Heights,” he said, “but there’s nothing I can do about it.”

This business is owned and operated by Andre Abdalla, who rents the hall for weddings, birthdays, and parties. Abdalla also serves as an incubator for churches and other businesses by renting them space. Laufer says that the ongoing renovation plans for the center include making the bayou facing side of the structures all glass, with a partially covered patio too.

23-year-old flipping tradition fuels GOMM growth plan By Betsy Denson betsy@theleadernews.com Garden Oaks Montessori dad Mark Sarmiento members the first year he was in charge of the kitchen volunteers at the school’s annual pancake breakfast as fun – and frenzied. “We had planned to do between 800 and 1,000 plates but had 1,300 people wanting to eat, he said. “We ran out for a little while and were sending people to run to the store for extra supplies. Now we make sure we have extras. Organizers say that they expect 3,000 people at the February 4 Pancake Breakfast & Silent Auction with about 1,300 to 1,400 attendees eating breakfast. “It’s free, said GOMM Principal Dr. Lindsey Pollock. “A lot of people come on foot and we see a lot of alumni. “It brings the whole community together, said GOMM parent engagement coordinator Stephanie Dubroff-Acosta of the 23 year old tradition, now sponsored by the GOMM PTO. Dubroff-Acosta remembers going to the event when she first moved to the neighborhood to turn in an appli-

cation for her daughter, who is now in eighth grade at the school. This year’s silent auction chair is Celina Sandoval, who was helping out at the event even before she had school aged kids, as the sales and new account liaison at Katz Coffee, which donates coffee for the event each year. “I saw the community there and when it came time for my kids to go to school, I wanted them to go here, even though we’re not zoned, said Sandoval. Sandoval says that in addition to the pancakes and the auction, the Waltrip Jazz band and cheerleaders will be on hand. The Houston Fire Department will also be showing off one of their trucks. Rain or shine, Sarmiento and 25 other dads, grandfathers and other friends of GOMM students will be in the school’s kitchen at 6 a.m. to get ready. He’s had the role of kitchen volunteer head since word got out he used to own a restaurant. He now has three kids at GOMM. The event also requires someone with a food handling certificate to be on hand to supervise food quality and

Photo contributed Volunteers at Garden Oaks Montessori Magnet gleefully make pancakes for the school’s annual Pancake Breakfast. The event theme, Building Our Future, is based on upcoming construction and transformation of GOMM

that role is filled by Breaux Peters. Except for Sarmiento and Peters who are there all day, the other kitchen workers volunteer for a two and a half hour shift between 6 a.m. and noon. “It’s a chance for us to give back and to get in and volunteer, Sarmiento said, noting that they bring in an array of electric griddles to keep up with the volume needed. “It’s

very fast paced. Once the doors open, it’s non-stop for the first few hours. Even though the breakfast and entertainment is free, Sandoval said the PTO hopes to make $50,000 for the school through the silent auction. The event theme, ‘Building Our Future’, is based on the upcoming construction and transformation of the GOMM campus from a bond

voters approved in 2012 to expand the school as well as a recognition of the changes made on campus due to the $3 million Magnet School Assistance Program grant from U.S. Department of Education in 2011. The grant made it possible for Garden Oaks Elementary to transition to an all-Montessori Magnet with an emphasis on Environmental Sciences.

“We keep growing and now we’re bursting at the seams, said Dr. Pollock, who notes that when she started at the school in 2008, there were 405 students and the school was on the potential closure list. Now enrollment is at 803. The overhaul of the school will add 65,000 square feet of facility space and renovation of the remaining buildings so students have modern, suitable classroom space. Monies raised go toward scholarships for 3 year old pre-K students, technology, field trips, grants for teacher training and for Montessori classroom materials, which are more specialized, and therefore more expensive, than mainstream materials. The event will take place from 8-10:30 a.m. on Saturday February 4 at Garden Oaks Montessori School, 901 Sue Barnett. An orientation session for parents and community members who are interested in Montessori education will be held at 9 a.m. Pancakes, syrup, sausage, Katz Coffee, hot chocolate and juice are free to the community. Bidding for the silent auction closes at 10:30 a.m.

Waltrip set to take part in Wounded Warriors game By Jonathan Valadez For The Leader Before the big game on Feb. 5, students from Waltrip High School, as well as the rest of Houston, will get an opportunity to watch a game filled with Super competition when the Wounded Warriors Amputee Football Team takes on NFL alumni Feb. 1 inside Delmar Stadium. Waltrip head football coach and athletic director Todd Wright said Chris Visser, a representative for the game,

approached him during the team’s football season and asked whether the school would like to be involved with various duties before and during the game. Waltrip’s band will be tasked with playing the National Anthem before the game, while the school’s Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps will simultaneously present the colors. In addition, athletes from Waltrip’s various athletic teams will be down on the field with the players and cheerleaders

and dancers will root for the teams that are playing. After finding out the details, Wright and Waltrip officials agreed to participate. “What we want to do is to help them put on a good show and cheer for them and have lots of energy for that group that’s playing, Wright said. That specific group boasts former and current NFL gridiron fighters, but more importantly, it features real-life warriors. In fact, the WWAFT is comprised almost entirely of mili-

tary veterans who lost either one or multiple limbs while serving in combat. According to the group’s mission statement, “the WWAFT seeks to inspire our fans and highlight the perseverance of our service members (both active and former) who continue to face life’s challenges without excuses. Wright said he hopes that the game and its athletes will inspire Waltrip’s student body. “Even when bad things happen, you still have to get up and go fight and survive

and we want our kids to understand that if you’ve got a tummy ache or you’re not feeling well, there are people who would give anything to be in a position to go to an athletic period and play in a football game and go compete, he said. “If our kids can take some of that fighting spirit that these wounded warriors have, we could really translate that into a better campus culture and our athletic programs would truly benefit from it. Although Waltrip will be

the only Houston Independent School District campus participating in the game’s events, Wright hopes that other schools will come out and support the game and these warriors. “I’ve invited other HISD groups to come out, he said. “The main goal is to get people in the stands. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. Feb. 1 at Delmar Stadium and tickets are $10 for adults and free for students and children.

Mathnasium makes learning meaningful for all comers For The Leader Are your school nights ending with children in tears over math homework? Do you feel frustrated as a parent when it comes to assisting with the math that your child brings home? Is this frustration leading your child to say, “I hate math! I just don’t get it! Carli Weatherhead’s experience as a middle school math teacher – and her own child’s building frustration with the piles of math homework he brought home each night – led her to a career as the new owner and director of Mathnasium of Oak Forest. “ I am so excited to get to be a part of this community and serve the kids of Garden Oaks and

their families, said Carli. “I know that we can really make a difference in the lives of the

people around us. Mathnasium Learning Center is an environment in which

students can do math workouts up to 12 times a month. Sessions are 60 minutes long and students focus on filling in the gaps in their math education and improving their overall math abilities. In addition to a specialized curriculum, students are offered 20 to 45 minutes of homework help. No scheduling is needed, making Mathnasium an easy and efficient solution to the nightly homework struggles. At Mathnasium, kids work out their minds to understand math concepts. The results make a world of difference to students, parents, and teachers alike. How do they do it? Mathnasium teaches number sense, a 30-year-old method of en-

Color Copies for only

counter and interaction with a specific set of concepts and skills, presented in a way that makes sense to the learner. For example, students begin to solve problems like 99 + 99 + 99 by using mental math (300 – 3 = 297) instead of relying on pen and paper. This common-sense approach allows learners to build quick confidence and teaches them to trust themselves with learning new ideas. “So often, kids miss a basic math concept and then the curriculum zooms ahead. The child doesn’t even know what they’re missing. They only know that they’re frustrated and lost. Once we fill in those learning gaps, students are able to leap ahead in their

learning. “We want them to understand math so that they can use it throughout their lives, not just so they can get better grades. We make math make sense to kids so that they have a better understanding of the world around them, says Carli. Mathnasium of Oak Forest is located at 1214 W 43rd Street, Suite #650 (next to Sweet Frog and behind Kroger). You can contact Carli Weatherhead at (713) 965-4747 to learn more about how Mathnasium can help your child achieve not only better grades in math but achieve better understanding of how math works in the real world.

Hampton Inn and Suites completes new build-out By Landan Kuhlmann landan@theleadernews.com As the Heights continues to grow and the Super Bowl looms, initiatives must be taken to keep pace with the influx of residents and visitors alike, and an area hotel has taken that mission to heart. Located at 5820 Katy Fwy., Hampton Inn and Suites in the Heights recently completed a facility expansion as well as the addition of a new ballroom as years of brainstorming and proactiveness have paid off. Hampton Inn and Suites’ newest wing is designed in such a way that will accommodate any large gathering, and owner Sam Patel says the wing will be used mainly as a spot for parties, weddings, corporate meetings and more. The wing maintains a connection to the existing building, while remaining private in the sense that if a large gathering is in order, all guests may be in one place as opposed to scattered throughout the existing hotel. Additionally, the hotel has three separate elevators, allowing large group guests to continue traversing back and forth across the hotel with ease as typical guests would while still maintaining the secluded feel whenever the event does come to pass. “We still want the guests here to be able to access the main campus. No matter what floor you’re on, you can walk straight through inside to the old site,” he said. “This gives them quick, easy access if they need something from the front desk or something along those lines,” he said. “A lot of corporate guests like to work in the lobby too, so we kept that connection open so they have that option.” Thirty-six additional rooms sit directly over a new 3,000 square foot ballroom complete with hightech AV equipment and three separate projectors for viewing ease. “We designed it so that no mat-

ter where you’re sitting, you’ll have a great vantage point to the presentation,” Patel said. In building the ballroom, Patel said hotel executives acted on the observance of market trends and previous requests in proactive attempts to reasonably accommodate the requests. “We just thought that with the layout of the room, it would be something extremely beneficial to our guests. A lot of hotels that are our size have a meeting space, but for them it’s more of a convenience,” he said. “We’ve invested $25,000 in AV equipment for this. We want to make the meeting room very attractive to those using it.” Brainstorming for the expansion began in 2015, as executives felt there was a need for additional rooms – given that the hotel was

almost always operating near capacity and taking into account Houston’s growing market as well as the impending Super Bowl influx — and pulled the trigger in efforts to maintain the quality product. “That way, they don’t leave the Heights area, they don’t leave the historic district,” Patel said. “They can stay here and go to the local restaurants and stores in our community, and that was kind of a jump-off point.” “It was the thought that there’s a need, and it’s important that the people coming into the area have a nice product to stay at,” he added. Conversely, the hope is that they (visitors) will pour back into the Heights community. “Now with Yale and the back of the Heights having so many res-

taurants, we’re able to recommend that stuff to them—it’s worked out really well with Hampton’s Local Hamptonality initiative,” added General Manager Michelle Fields. Evidence would seem to support that assertion; as Preeminent Hotels Regional Director of Sales Paige Cassel said since opening its doors in May of 2013 demand for the Heights Hampton property has gradually increased, mirroring the expanding neighborhood. “This tells us the demand is there and gave Preeminent Hotels ownership the confidence that investing millions more into the Hampton and the Heights community is the right choice,” she said. After that, Patel said it was a matter of how many rooms could realistically be added due to city ordinances regulating how much

parking could be accommodated. “We found that 36 was the maximum, even though we wanted to do more,” he said, noting the unfortunate lack of parking space necessitated four stories in one building and five in the other. “Had we been able to add more parking spaces we would have added more rooms.” Construction commenced in March of 2016, and Hampton Inn and Suites will be coronating its expansion and brand new 3,000square-foot ballroom with a grand opening celebration March 28 from 4-7 p.m. Preeminent Hotels has partnered with the Home Run Hitters – a local non-profit in the Heights dedicated to helping children with special needs achieve their goals and dreams – to be the beneficiary of all the funds raised from a raffle.
