Sweet Bribery open for ice cream on 19th By Betsy Denson betsy@theleadernews.com Pastry chef Sharon Gofreed got married three weeks ago to become Sharon Leonard and that’s not the only big change in her life. Last weekend was the soft opening for Sweet Bribery, the pastry and ice-cream shop she has opened with other investors at 250 W. 19th St. The site of the former Chippendale Eastlake Antiques store was purchased by Braun Enterprises in 2015. Clothing stores Mary & Moss and Proper are already doing business next to Sweet Bribery. Leonard was previously the pastry chef at State of Grace, the JW Marriott Houston and Uchi. She says that she’s very excited for this newest endeavor and that most everything is being made in house. “There is something for every member of the family,” said Leonard. “Sweets for the kids with premium ice cream and toppings and superior products for parents as well. I am so proud of what we are offering. We won’t be your average ice-cream shop.” Leonard’s favorite ice cream
Sharon Leonard said that nearly everything in her pastry and ice-cream shop is homemade. right now is the Fruity Pebble Cereal Milk but the red velvet cream cheese ice cream is a close second. There will also be a rum daiquiri ice-cream for adults – although most of the alcohol is cooked out – and a bourbon expresso. “I am making the majority of the toppings,” said Leonard. “Of course I will have classic toppings
such as M&Ms and mini marshmallows, but I will also be doing house made marshmallow fluff, house made sprinkles, and something I am calling Rice Krispies croutons. The sauces are all made in house and feature hot fudge, salted caramel, Frangelico banana caramel and strawberry jam.” Sweet Bribery has applied for a beer and wine permit and when it comes through there will also be champagne floats with seasonal sorbet. On the pastry front there will be everything from the classic chocolate chunk cookie to the ‘tailgate cookie,’ with potato chips, pretzels, butterscotch chips and caramel M&Ms – to the crème de menthe brownie which is an old family recipe. Seating is available inside and out. “Braun Enterprises is thrilled to have Sweet Bribery in our development,” said Zach Braun. “19th street continues to be one of the most walkable areas in Houston and we expect the neighborhood to fully embrace this great local concept.”

August sales jump from Harvey-ridden 2017

By Landan Kuhlmann landan@theleadernews.com The traditional year-overyear measurements that the Houston Association of Realtors (HAR) uses to track market trends were thrown off course due to Harvey halting most real estate activity across the greater Houston market during the final week of August 2017 and beyond. According to the traditional, full-month numbers, Houston single-family home sales rose 37.2 percent year-overyear, with 8,358 homes sold in August versus 6,090 one year earlier when Harvey struck the region according to the report. Per these same numbers, local neighborhoods experienced extreme, widespread sales booms from August 2017 to the same month this year. Year-over-year and year to date home sales also ticked up across the Leader’s coverage area, while home price figures displayed mixed results across the area. However, in order to eliminate data distortions that natural disasters like Harvey can cause the most recent

HAR report analyzed yearover-year sales activity between August 1-24, before Harvey struck. That analysis still showed a healthy market with 5,844 single-family home sales in 2018 versus 5,433 in 2017 – an increase of 7.6 percent. On a year-todate basis, home sales are 7.2 percent ahead of 2017’s pace. 77018 Per the full-month numbers, home sales in Garden Oaks shot up from 2017 to 2018, with 69 homes coming off the market last month
compared to 47 through the time Harvey hit the region last year. The 60.5 percent increase represented the area’s fourth-largest increase in sales. Meanwhile, there was also a 13 percent rise in year-to-date home sales in the area, with 460 sold at this

Liberty Kitchen flavors hit the road For The Leader Liberty Kitchen culinary director Lance Fegen is packing his chef tools and headed out to pop-up at Bader Ranch in Round Top, a 7,500 square foot antique shop outfitted with a full kitchen and stylish dining area. From September 20 to October 7, visitors can enjoy Fegen’s lunch plates from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and dinner from 5:00 to 9:30 p.m. at 470 South Washington St. Round Top, Texas. This is the second Liberty Kitchen pop-up at the same locale. The first popup occurred during the 2018 spring antique show and was met with enthusiasm from first-time show visitors and veteran attendees alike. “I’m excited to return to Bader Ranch and offer antique show goers a solid option for fueling up in the middle of the day or feasting, winding down and having a good time at the end of the day. We’ve dubbed
the food offerings ‘Frenchesque Liberty Kitchen fare,’ and all that really means is that guests can expect a mix of comforting dishes, many incorporating premium meat and fish that’s grilled to order, similar to what we do at Liberty Kitchen, just dressed a little differently” says Lance Fegen, F.E.E.D. TX Restaurant Group culinary director. Fegen’s savory dishes will be complemented with desserts beer and wine served by special guests. Pastry chef Johnny Wesley — formerly of Liberty Kitchen at the Treehouse, The Union Kitchen and Killen’s Steakhouse —will be on-site dishing out ice cream, popsicles, floats and frescas from his dessert food truck, HTX Nitro Creamery. TX Restaurant Group Creative and Development Director, will not only work with Bader Ranch to transform the dining area into a fun, fashionforward oasis, he’ll also serve as guest bartender, pouring a
selection of wines in addition to Liberty Light and Liberty Dark, custom brews created by Austin-based Infamous Brewing Company. “Our motto at Liberty Kitchen is ‘life, liberty and happiness.’ To be able to share that with people outside of our city is truly something special. In essence, we’re expanding the footprint of great food and fun into one of Texas’ most exciting bi-annual events,” says Eaves.
Sample menu items for lunch include a cold smoked salmon BLT sandwich on sourdough with lemony-dill mayo and Lance’s crushed deviled egg salad sandwich with lettuce, tomato, pickle, and wheat. For dinner the menu items are rabbit pâté de campagne, fire roasted beets and blue cheese salad, smoked coffee-sugar rubbed angus short rib, wood grilled angus tenderloin, and ora king salmon and mapley-pepper glaze.

On the price market, both average (by 17.1 percent to $476,279) and median (by 11.8 percent to $425,000) home prices shot up by double digits last month compared to August 2017. Year-to-date, average price has risen to $511,918 (10.6 percent) while median price is up 6.7 percent to $426,975. 77092 In the area consisting of Garden Oaks/Oak Forest’s western edge and homes just west of Highway 290, home sales have dipped yearto-date, with 157 sales closing compared to 167 to a similar point in 2017. The six percent dip represented the sole drop in the Leader coverage area. On a monthly basis, the HAR report says home sales year-over-year in August more than
doubled, with 32 sales closing compared to just 14 until Harvey hit last August. The nearly 129 percent jump was by far the most significant spike in the local area before accounting for the Harvey effect. Average raw home prices yearover-year for August held relatively steady (1.2 percent increase), while median prices’ 10.3 percent increase (to $253,250) was the second-largest in the Leader area and nearly tripled the greater Houston area’s three percent rise. Year-todate, average home prices have risen ever so slightly (2.2 percent to $260,827), as have median prices (4.5 percent to $254,000). 77008 The greater Heights homes market showed some of the healthiest growth in raw August numbers according to the most recent report.
Home sales in the Heights shot up more than 70 percent (with 104 homes sold) when not accounting for Harvey, marking for the secondlargest spike in monthly year-overyear sales. Year-to-date, 709 home sales have closed compared to 685 at a similar point last year. Both median and average homes prices showed identical 8.8 percent increases in year-over-year August trends. Average price came in $531,857, while median home prices came in at $462,500. Yearto-date, home prices again experienced nearly indentical rises, with median homes prices spiking 6.9 percent to $465,000, and average prices rising 6.7 percent to $531,805. 77007 In the eastern portion of the Heights, including the Woodland
Heights and Sunset Heights, raw numbers showed a 38.2 percent spike in year-over-year August home sales, with 47 homes coming off the market last month compared to 34 through Aug. 24, 2017. Year-to-date, 382 homes have been sold thus far in 2018, putting it 15.8 percent ahead of last year’s rate through the same time period. Year-over-year, this area was one of the only neighborhoods in the Leader area that experienced a drop in price accompanying the increased sales. Monthly year-overyear prices dropped 3.6 percent to $451,052, while median home prices here dropped 9.2 percent to $425,000. Year-to-date, average homes prices have risen 7.4 percent to $462,137, while median home price has risen 4.5 percent to $415,000 77007
In the southernmost portion of the Leader’s coverage area – Washington Heights, etc. – 65 homes flew off the market this past August, a 25 percent spike from the 52 sold through Aug. 24 in 2017. Yearto-date, the pace (484 homes sold) is nearly identical to 2017’s pace of 483 at this same juncture. Monthly year-over-yera average home prices in these neighborhoods dropped by nearly 12 percent to $497,358 – the largest Leader-area dip. Meanwhile, median home price here held relatively steady, rising 1.3 percent to $435,000. Position requires a Master’s degree in Chemical Engineering, Material Science, Materials Engineering, Process Engineering or closely related field to include 2 years of experience as an R & D Engineer, Process Engineer, Production Engineer or similar role in the chemical production industry. Experience must include 2 years of experience with Aspen Plus and Aspen Dynamic Simulation tools or equivalent simulation platform; utilizing Silane and Polysilicon production technologies, processes, and equipment; experience with multiphase chemical reaction engineering in mechanically agitated vessels and with reactor start-up/shutdown processes; experience with analysis of pilot technology for new manufacturing processes for Polysilicon manufacturing; and providing start up support for new Polysilicon manufacturing plants. Reimagined gourmet breakfast joint opens Zarah Parker Managing Editor
Breakfast reimagined is the motto for the upcoming EggHaus Gourmet, as they set to innovate the breakfast food scene. With the idea that quality breakfast can be served in a convenient and quick way, the eatery is set to open on Friday, September 21 at 2042 E. T.C. Jester. Brought to the community by the co-founder of its neighboring restaurant, King’s BierHaus, EggHaus Gourmet is Philipp Sitter’s newest concept. “The response has been overwhelming. We’re very excited to show the community what we have been working on for quite some time,” said Sitter. EggHaus Gourmet took years in the making. For the last two and a half years they have been hosting made-fromscratch kolache pop-ups at King’s Biergarten in Pearland and at King’s BierHaus in the Heights. When the kolaches would sellout quick on weekends and 6 a.m. around the building lines became regular, both Hans and Philipp Sitter decided it was time to expand their concept. For EggHaus efficiency with quality food and service is important. The sitter’s wanted to create a breakfast spot perfect for the fast-paced morning crowd needing to get to the office, as well as for the customers having a slow morning. So, they created accessible breakfast that is easy to grab and go, but still high quality and delicious to eat. Luckily for King’s kolache lovers all of their most popular kolaches are on the EggHaus menu. The kolaches included are, Reuben with corned beef, sauerkraut, swiss, and homemade thousand island; Drunken Chicken with shredded chicken simmered in Stiegl lager bier, sautéed with peppers and onions and buffalo sauce; Three Cheese & Smoked Polish with fresh jalapeno; Sweet Cream Cheese with melted

strawberries; Oma’s Peach with sweet peaches, apricot and topped with orange zest; Organic Peanut Butter with homemade strawberry jam and a variety of vegetarian kolaches. Also available on the menu will be reinvented egg sandwiches and elevated tacos served with cage-free eggs. A Hangover Sandwich with shredded chicken simmered in Stiegl lager bier and lettuce, tomato, cage-free egg, queso fresco, cilantro and avocado ranch on a warm butter flake bun will be featured on the menu. Another sandwich is The Scramble loaded with cage-free soft-scrambled eggs, smoked bacon, avocado, green onions, cheddar and homemade chipotle aioli on a warm butter flake bun. You can also grab a simple bacon, egg, and cheese sandwich or a sausage, egg, and cheese sandwich. On the taco side the menu
includes, La Brea with cagefree eggs, potato, bell peppers, grilled onions, cilantro, and queso fresco, Cerveza with cage-free eggs, ground chuck simmered in German Pilsner, grilled onions, bell peppers, and house aioli, and more. And if you’re cutting back on tortillas they offer to substitute them with a lettuce cup. Also available are freshly made in-house pastries, avocado toast, fruit cup, breakfast potatoes, coffee and matcha. By teaming with popular Austin-based designer Kim Lewis, Sitter was able to transform the 2,000-square-foot restaurant into an approachable, inspiring setting that complements gourmet breakfast. The entry wall is covered by floral wallpaper and bright yellow sconces that lighten the room and make it feel open and inviting. Pops of yellow, white and black accent the space and set against dozens of plants it makes for a casual,
refreshing place to start the day. Once EggHaus Gourmet opens on September 21, operating hours will be 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday; and 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays. Or beat the crowd and order online at EggHaus.com

I recommend walking down the street to the Byzantine Fresco Chapel to view Francis Alÿs: The Fabiola Project, this two-year exhibit is coming to a close on October 28, 2018. What’s so fascinating about this exhibit is that it was collected from flea markets around the world. Francis Alÿs: The Fabiola Project consists of more than 450 reproductions of a lost 1885 painting of 4th-century Roman Saint Fabiola by French artist Jean-Jacques Henner. The 2-story tall wall of reproductions is absolutely amazing to look upon all at once. Why did so many people, mostly amateurs, choose this one image paint? It’s just wild.
