Annual Expo less than two weeks away For The Leader The Leader and Memorial Hermann Greater Heights are once again inviting local seniors and their loved ones out for a day of fun, food, and information gathering as the 7th Senior Expo is fast approaching, with less than two weeks to go. The annual event is officially set for Wednesday, Sept. 19 at the SPJST Lodge 88 at 1435 Beall St., beginning at 8:30 a.m. until 1 p.m. The event provides access to resources, services, and businesses across the

community that are imperative for senior care. Attendees will have the opportunity to meet and greet with a variety of different vendors offering health-

care, insurance and transportation options while listening to experts tackle subjects important to senior health. They will also be able to enjoy free

breakfast and lunch, along with door prizes and other giveaways throughout the day. Cavatore Italian Restaurant will be catering lunch for the event. Further, while the Expo’s primary aim may be to specifically help seniors find some much-needed services and resources, Leader Publisher Jonathan McElvy said several types of caregivers in the community can also gain great insight into caring for senior loved ones during the event as well. At least 500 attendees are expected for the festivities. “This is a really cool oppor-

Hogg Middle School is seeing a revival, with attendance numbers through the roof in their Heights home; not to mention that a large-scale project aimed at enhancing the school’s existing programs is now underway. Parents and staff hope their “Hogg Outdoors” project will move quickly, soon ushering in a new basketball court, field, track, and more. Hogg Outdoors is an over-arching plan to renovate and beautify Hogg’s outdoor campus. Part of the project will include new outdoor seating, scoreboard, baseball/ softball cages and irrigation to keep the fields green. The project will also include additions to the community garden, such as eight new raised garden beds, and Equipment storage shed, compost station, irrigation and rainwater catchment, outdoor kitchen and gazebo. Learn Local -- a Heights-based community nonprofit -along with Hogg families, Spark and the Heights community have already raised more than $140,000 toward the initiative. “[Parents] have been excited to have a place to go on the weekends even if they don’t have kids at Hogg,” Adrienne Schwartz said. “And if they do, they’re excited kids will be able to play sports a little safer and be able to really utilize this campus.”

Photo courtesy of Hogg Middle School Demolition and renovation on Hogg’s playing fields has begun. The project includes a new field, basketball court, track in Phase 1, and a new playground in Phase 2.

The thought, Schwartz noted, bloomed after one seventh-grade football coach would not play a game on the school’s field due to its conditions, and just sprouted wings of its own after that. “It had just become extremely run down, so principal Sugarek convened with staff and parents from the community to put a full-size football field and full-size track,

A 15-year-old has been arrested on Criminal Mischief charges by the Harris County Precinct One Constable’s Office following a crime spree over the course of more than a week in the Heights, much to the relief of some residents. From Aug. 17-26, Precinct One deputies received at least 10 calls from property owners who discovered broken winPhoto by Landan dows in their Kuhlmann homes and on Residents in the 2200 their vehicles. block of Columbia were Some of those among those targeted in a recent BB gun crime reports were in spree. the 2200 block of Columbia Street and the 2000 block of Columbia Street. The damage appearerd to have been caused by a “BB” type projectile targeting residential and vehicle window panes, vehicle windshields, and custom front doors with glass. Sunset Heights resident Andy Noel and his wife were among victims of the incidents along Columbia Street, and expressed gratitude and relief now that the suspect has been apprehended. “We’re pleased, and obviously relieved to know that we’re not going to have to deal with this stuff anymore,” he said. “They did a great job taking the information they were able to get [from security videos, etc.] and figure out how to catch this person.” Following perusal of a nearby resident’s security camera, deputies were able to locate a snapshot of the suspect’s vehicle that was captured on security footage. While canvassing the area where the incidents occurred, investigators found a vehicle matching the description of the See Crime P. 3A

The Lift on 19th soon under new ownership Betsy Denson betsy@theleadernews.com As The Lift’s current owner Rhonda Rhodes put it – the first few pages of a new chapter for her, and for the bookstore on 19th Street, have already been written. She has made plans to sell The Lift to Kelly Contello, a longtime employee who loves books, and comes from a retail background. “As hard as it is for me to believe, I’m 60 now,” Rhodes said. “I’m ready for my next chapter. And I’ve enjoyed these eight-plus years of creating, de-

Part of that journey involves a new relationship with a man who Rhodes first met in grade school – and the other includes her own art. “Before I opened The Lift, I was a briefing attorney at downtown firms, and before that, a technical editor,” said Rhodes. “My life has always revolved around reading, researching, writing, and editing. As a writer, I won a Texas-wide manuscript contest for my second novel. I also co-authored a resource guide for Houston parents that was available city wide years See Lift P. 3A
