Many young athletes dream about being in the Olympics, but for Oak Forest gymnast Sophia Butler, it is not a dream but a goal. “I’d like to go by 2020,” said 11-year old Butler, who has been taking lessons at Discover Gymnastics ever since she was 3. It was not necessarily an auspicious start for Butler who said that she would run away from her first teacher, Coach Francisco, during the group classes. “I had a lot of energy,” she said. Father Jim Butler said that there was nothing about his daughter’s experience early on that would lead him to believe that she would be so successful in gymnastics.

“She was just a typical kid,” he said. But the coaches at Discover saw potential in their student and once Coach Haifa Abdullah took Butler under her wing as her team coach, things began to change. “Coach Haifa taught me to stay focused,” said Butler. “I was lazy.” Lazy is hardly a word that could be attributed to Butler now. She trains Monday through Thursday from 5-9 p.m. and on Saturdays from 9-1 p.m. with head coach Costela Mihaiuc, assisted by Hong Jiang. Butler also was invited by USA Gymnastics to attend developmental training camps for 4 days each month at the National Team Training Center, which is held at the Karolyi Ranch, north of Houston. By Jonathan Garris jgarris@theleadernews.com While some in The Leader area were excited to hear news of an endorsement for the construction of the Houston-Dallas high-speed rail along a utility corridor by the Federal Railroad Administration, local representatives are saying ‘not so fast.’ A federal study released in late August endorses the use of a utility corridor, following the Centerpoint Energy and Oncor Electric delivery “high-voltage electrical transmission lines.” According to the report, the route would keep Texas Central Railway from having to utilize eminent domain along proposed pathways near highways and other roads. Mark Klein, president of Super Neighborhood #12, said one of the issues with the technical report is that it doesn’t necessarily indicate how routing would occur from Hockley, TX to Houston. “It also still leaves the door open to potentially using the corridor which leads through the Garden Oaks, Oak Forest and Inwood-area,” Klein said. “There are also certain parts of the report that concern us, particularly that opportunities may exist for TCR to

Finding ways to run a more efficient city government while addressing the looming pension and budget issues in Houston were two hot topics among the candidates for mayor Tuesday night at Grace Church in Garden Oaks. Among the candidates participating in the forum were Sylvester Turner, Demetria Smith, Marty McVey, Bill King, Ben Hall, Adrian Garcia, Stephen Costello and Chris Bell. Another candidate, Nguyen Thai Hoc, also spoke before and after the forum discussion. The forum, co-hosted by the Garden Oaks Civic Club, Super Neighborhood #12 and The Leader, was moderated by The Leader’s publisher Jonathan McElvy and featured questions submitted by readers. Among the topics for discussion was Houston’s current charter which some feel advocates for a strong mayor’s office at the cost of a strong, centralized city council and other administrators. Chris Bell said the current city government has strayed too far away from the sense of collaboration

that makes a city truly capable of tackling complex issues, citing his experience working in city council in the late 90s. “I think any mayor that thinks they can have their finger on the pulse of everything that’s going on without reaching out to members of city council and to civic associations and super neighborhood groups is kidding themselves,” Bell said. “I think you need to form partnerships with members of council and empower them when you can.” Costello also cited his experience from his current third term as a member of Houston city council, and said it’s up to the mayor to “recruit the input from city council.” He said he would run the city in the same vein as how he has run his engineering firm. “In the 15 years that I was the sole president and principal shareholder of the firm, not once did I have a contrary vote,” Costello said. “What I did is I recruited my partners and we talked about the issues collectively and we collectively made a decision. Last June, a green fence was erected around the former That Pizza Place, 3322 Ella Blvd., sparking speculation about what would happen to the space. For a time, the Liberty Kitchen folks planned to turn it into Cowboy Surfers, a burger, fried chicken and taco joint, which also offered live music, but they gave up their lease. Now the property has been bought, as have a number of other parcels at 34th Street and Ella, by one entity. Crescere Garden Oaks, LP is now listed by HCAD as the owner of the following properties: 1605 W. 34th St. #1 (Texas Bus Sales), 1717 W. 34th St. #1 (storefront says Century Marketing, Inc.), 3330 Ella Blvd (El Rey Taqueria), 3322 Ella Blvd (That Pizza Place) and 1621 W. 34th St. (private home).

The registered agent of Crescere is Chris Hotze, who The Leader spoke to in June about his building at 1717 W. 34th because there was a lease sign up at the property. Hotze tells The Leader this week that the space is still fully leased to Glauser Landscape Company. As for the rest of it? “We are working with several concepts for the old pizza place,” said Hotze. “There has been significant interest from several large convenience store/ gas station combinations. We also have several fast food restaurants and automobile service companies that are very interested.” Patrons of El Rey can glean some hope from Hotze’s statement that they “hope to continue to have a long term relationship with El Rey as a tenant.” In June, El Rey owner See Buyer, P. 2A

balances. Hall said he did not favor diluting the powers of the mayor’s office and felt that the city needs a manager like himself to work with city council rather than overruling them and vice versa. “There are four levels of checks and balances – the city attorney, the mayor, the city comptroller and the city council, Hall said. “There are enough checks and balances to safeguard against a rogue mayor or an overly confident mayor not seeking the counsel of the city attorney, the comptroller and council members. Bill King recalled his time as mayor of Kemah for his perspective on government power, and opined figuring out a way to “push more authority and responsibility down to a lower level of government. “I think we need to revitalize that super neighborhood structure we put in place a number of years ago, King said. “What would be wrong with giving each Super Neighborhood back five percent of their property taxes to spend the way they want to in their neighborhood? I’m guessing

they would probably spend it better than we would down at city hall.â€? McVey put bluntly that he felt the organization structure of the city of Houston is not working for the average citizen, saying he was willing to “tear it down and rebuild it back up to 2015 standards.â€? “Right now the city departments operate in silos,â€? McVey said. “They do not share information back and forth as they should and we do not have a ‘whole-of-government’ approach to governing. What that means is that departments should be [‌] efficient with your taxpaying money, and by doing so we should be able to serve more people.â€? Smith emphasized she believed in the current structure of power but not the people who were in power who “misinterpretâ€? that structure. She compared those in office to being in a large clique, disconnected firmly from the voters and their interests. “I know the mayor is the CEO of the city but who I look at as my CEO is the people,â€? Smith said. “How can we run

the city without hearing from the people? It’s the people that make the city and not the city that makes the people. There’s a huge disconnect between the city leaders and the people. Turner called the city a “big corporation, and said it would be impossible to have a large amount of CEOs all running that corporation at the same time. Turner said he would utilize his own political background and business background in providing leadership in the mayor’s office. “The accountability measure is critically important, Turner said. “If you try to create a system where you have 16 or 17 people operating as the CEO, you are going to destroy the accountability measure and we’re going to be more disappointed when things aren’t done. Gymnast from P. 1A Butler was second on the floor and the vault. By 2014, she was competing as a Level 8 at the State championships where she was first on the bars and the floor and second all around. Butler also qualified for the Regionals championship. The next year, Butler had reached Level 9 and qualified for the Regionals and the Western championships. At the State championships that year is where Valeri Liukin, father of Olympic gymnast Nastia Liukin, recruited Butler for additional training, saying, “I like the little one. In addition to her team competitions, Butler is also qualified as an Elite gymnast. The Elite level is the top level of gymnastics competition. It has two age divisions, Junior (11-15) and Senior (16+). For Butler’s age the Elite category is called Elite Hopes. There are numerous Elite qualifiers each year. Many female gymnasts spend time and money as they go to numerous qualifiers to try to make Elite. In addition to competing in her regular Level 9 season and doing very well – winning all around in a total of 5 meets – Butler attended the last Elite

qualifier of the year. She made it on her first try, getting first in bars and beam and third all around. This qualified her to attend the Hopes Classic at Karoyli Ranch in May. At the Classics, Butler won bars and qualified to the Hopes Championships at the Secret Classic held on July 24th in Chicago. Junior and Senior Elites and well known gymnasts like Simone Biles and Gabby Douglas competed in this event too where Butler was third all around and Second on floor amongst the Hopes Elites. “Sophia said she wanted to be an elite gymnast – she called her shot, said Jim Butler. “We just let her go with it. Now the family is starting to think about sponsors as plane tickets and hotel nights certainly add up. As for Butler, who says that the floor is a favorite of hers because she likes the music and “flying in mid-air, like nothing can stop you, she continues to train, and plan. After the Olympics, she wants to do college gymnastics. “It will be easier for people to recruit me if I was an Olympian, she reasons.

here’s a statistic from Gallup that says about 50 percent of all Americans want to lose weight. Some college-level math would say that’s one out of every two of us who wants to drop a few pounds – count me in. So let’s say we take the professional approach to dropping these pounds, and we hire a nutritionist who will shape our diet and even explain all the science of processed food versus raw, natural, blah, blah. You make a call to a local nutritionist, ask for an appointment and when you walk in the door, you see a 320-pound guy who has a bag of fries in one hand and an insulin pump in the other. He looks frazzled, his face is red because he can’t chew the French fries fast enough, and he asks you to have a seat because he has the perfect diet plan, you know, if he doesn’t have a heart attack first. Besides the whole curiosity thing, are you sticking around? Here’s another scenario: It’s election season, and there’s a race for district court judge. One candidate has served the legal profession with class, dignity and nary a blemish on the record for three decades. The other candidate has been arrested

three times – twice for armed robberies and once for an attempted escape from prison. Who you got? You’re a young parent and you want your 2-year-old to learn how to swim. You search for a swimming instructor, sign your child up, and on the first day of class, your child is the only one there. The instructor, meanwhile, is down at the deep end kicking and splashing and gurgling for help. Between the spews of water and the hysteria of the whole scene, you reach your hand into the pool and grab the instructor’s hand because, as it turns out, he can’t actually swim. How fast are your packing the inflatable arm floaties and getting the heck out of dodge? Absurd questions – all of them

– right? Those who have read my columns for the past few years, and even those who have only read them recently, know a couple of things about me. First, I am an Alabama native and I’m usually proud of that. Second, I am a Christian, and while there should not be shame in telling readers that, I’ve got to admit my shame-meter has been put on alert. Last week, news out of my beloved home state broke that Alabama’s governor, Dr. Robert Bentley, was served with divorce papers by his wife, Dianne. Divorce isn’t unimaginable these days, but this is more than a divorce. I actually grew up with the Bentley’s children. We went to church together; Bentley was a deacon in our church. After just celebrating their 50th anniversary together, the reports out of Alabama are pretty solid that the marriage will end because the Good Governor has been involved in an affair with a staff member. This was crushing, personally, because I know the family. It was more crushing because Bentley – a Republican through-and-through (well, until he pulled a George H.W.

when leaving a call-back number. Then say it again. “We will return Fluffy if you put ten thousand, repeat, ten thousand…” Have you ever had to play and replay a phone message to find out who is calling and what the call-back number might be? When leaving a message, be sure you’ve got the correct number in the first place. This really happened: I was gone and returned to hear a phone message: “Carlos, J.J. can’t make it in today, so you need to fill in for him. Be here at four.” Next message: “Carlos, just to remind you that you need to be here by four.” Final message: “Carlos! It’s four thirty! Where the (fill in the blank) are you?” Poor Carlos probably showed up for work the next day, all smiles and enthusiastic, and promptly got fired. Businesses have incoming phone calls down to a science, so that their employees never have to actually speak to a customer. The companies give you options, none of which are what you want. Banks are bad: “Press 1 to talk to another recording, 2 for more music, 3 for our latest interest rates – we love a good laugh -- and press 4 to book a brazen daylight robbery.” Here’s another: Have you ever talked to a real human being at your phone company? I only get: “All our associates are currently dealing with etc. etc. Because of the high volume of calls etc. etc…” I could call at 6 on Christmas morning and be told there is a high volume of calls. When calling my cable company to report an outage and cannot get online, it tells me to go online to report an outage. We now come to the newest phenomena in communications, iPhones, smartphones, phones that you can stick in your ear, up your nose or carry in your holster, so that you can multitask, like working a crossword puzzle while closing an incision. Remember that when using one of these gadgets, no one else cares what you are saying, typing or hash-tagging. So be discrete. Just pretend you are dealing with Ashley Madison, and would prefer no one else knows. To get some privacy and not bother others with your connective transaction, try to find an empty space – like Waco. You can also go to your garage, sit on your front-yard curb or just go without bathing for a week, always good in July or August. These instruments have

ning of our nation – have fought for free markets and a free society, because we believe that good people will act honestly, whether in financial dealings or in the way we treat our neighbors and colleagues. And over the past year, Christians have fought harder than anyone to keep the sanctity of traditional marriage – man and woman. When Christians choose to take the moral high ground on societal issues, and then fail the way we have, we lose the ability to influence, and the news over the past week (and it’s really every week these days) has been one of those moments of great awakening. Christians can’t fight for honesty and continually be dishonest. Christians can’t fight for strong criminal justice and skirt the laws. Christians can’t promote the sanctity of marriage while sleeping around on a wife of five decades. The greatest enemies Christians have today are Christians themselves. You don’t trust an obese nutritionist, a judge in jail or a swim instructor who can’t swim. Why is this any different? Email jonathan@theleadernews.com

Phone-y advice for the phone etiquette impaired Luigi gets off the plane from the old country and soon buys a Lotto ticket. Lordy, he wins $10 million, and purchases a big house like his cousin, Vito, has. Luigi tells the decorator, “An here I wanna a phone booth wit a beeg statue of da blessed Virgin Mary wid a beeg halo over her head, justa like my cousin, Vito, has.” When the decorator asks why, Luigi replies, “Causa every time da phone ring, Vito say, ‘Halo? Statue?’” Oh, excuse me, my own phone is ringing. “Hi, remember when I told you about that, and what I was going to do with it? Well, it just occurred to me he should….” I ask rather testily, “Who is this?” No doubt such a situation has happened to you, too. You answer the phone and the party starts talking, as though your last conversation had ended only a few seconds ago, and now he or she is resuming it. This is not only arrogant – like the caller is so important that you should immediately know who it is by the sound of his first few words -- but unfair. The other party knows who you are, where you are unless you are answering on your cell phone or smartphone or hearing aid, and what was under discussion. Caller ID helps, if the caller doesn’t have an unlisted annoyance. This person has violated the first rule of phones, there are many others, and you might want to forward these rules of the rude to end such abuses. When calling, identify yourself in some detail. Have you heard this? “Hi, this is Mike.” Mike who? Your best man, the postal carrier, your bartender or perhaps Mike the enforcer who is reminding you about that 2K you owe the Bones & Crunch Lending Co. Mike should add, “Mike, whose car you sideswiped in the consignment shop parking lot and then sped away. Say, you’re a hard person to find.” We have all had to endure those unending answering machines’ greetings. It begins with music, like you want to listen to the love theme from “Patton.” Then: “Hi, you have reached the Waspkiller home. We are not here now, but don’t get any ideas. There are more video cameras in and around this house than the NBC newsroom. Sandi Sue is at her tattoo parlor. Junior will be out as soon as the bail is set. Mom is attending her anger management class and Dad is at his job at the car wash. So please leave a short message. I mean, we don’t have time to listen to some blah blah blah about your problems.” That greeting is much too long. For your own answer in reply, keep it short but, again, identify yourself, and speak slowly, plainly and preferably in English, especially

and announced that Alabama would raise taxes) – has proclaimed his faith to the entire nation. A few years ago, when giving a speech, Bentley earned national attention for calling out those who are not Christians. “… If you’re a Christian and if you’re saved, and the Holy Spirit lives within you just like the Holy Spirit lives within me… It makes you and me brothers,” Bentley said. “And it makes you and me brother and sister.” He continued: “… Anybody here today who has not accepted Jesus Christ as their savior, I’m telling you, you’re not my brother and you’re not my sister, and I want to be your brother.” Those words were met with anger across many pockets of the country. I wasn’t angry back then, but I am today, and it’s not just with Robert Bentley or any specific leader in our country. Most Christians in our society choose to take the moral high ground when it comes to social issues. We believe in a strong criminal justice and defense system because Christians believe in bringing immorality to justice. Christians – back to the begin-

apps -- short for apprehensions – which give you the weather, stock reports and photographs of other people with too much time on their hands. They show home videos, maps and let you play games while waiting at red lights. (I love the bumper sticker: “Hang up and drive”) You can also get an app that locates the nearest teenager to show you how to use the other apps. These phones are sort of the Swiss Army knives of electronics. I don’t have any of these new gadgets, and prefer to either use semaphores or shout. My one phone is in a booth with the Virgin Mary wearing a big halo. Ashby is on hold at ashby2@ comcast.net

11 year old’s idea to prevent school zone speeding

Dear Editor: I am 11 years old. I live at Arbor Green Condominiums on Milwee St. in Mangum Manor. There are a lot of things happening on this street. The first one is that people are speeding in a school zone where kids walk to and from school. They speed because all of our speed bumps are fragmented, and we have no police officers there to give out tickets. These are some of my ideas that I would like to turn into solutions. Maybe they could make new speed bumps so they won’t speed and have police officers on the street, to issue citations. Isaiah Perez

Voting straight ticket can get wrong person elected

Dear Editor: I am absolutely offended by this opinion hit piece. So, this partisan hack thinks I’m a monobrowed illiterate “think-a-like” because I vote conservative. I hope the Leader readership sees this for exactly what it is. It’s not comedy, it’s not humor, it’s not “thought provoking”, and it’s not entertaining. It is mean spirited, hateful, bigoted, and far left extremist. Lynn Ashby needs to be retired. Charlie Walton Email us your letters: news@theleadernews.com

MESSAGE OF THE WEEK

Actions mAke the person

M

ost of us put the cart before the horse when it comes to thinking about our moods and general states of mind. That is, we imagine that we can just wait until we get into a good mood, and then we can go out and do happy activities. But in reality, the mood or state of mind is more often a result of the activity. So, if we sing and dance a happy tune, we’ll be happy. If we climb a tree, we’ll feel adventurous. But, if we wait for the adventurous mood to overtake us before we go out and climb the tree, we will probably never get up there amongst the branches. So, if we are feeling down, we can call a friend and make a date to do something fun. Perhaps more importantly, we should realize that our moods also become habitual because they are often the result of our actions. If we are in the habit of cursing and driving aggressively during our commute to work then anger and irritation have become habits, and just as we had to learn these habits, we will have to unlearn them. The most important lesson here is that happiness itself is a habit, or at least a habitual disposition to act in a certain way. We should get in the habit of looking on the bright side and doing happy things, and we will soon find that we are becoming a genuinely happier person. But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. - R.S.V. James 1.22

Food, drink Art Valet Part II: Travel with Mitch across the states, abroad I’m on a train. I’ve always wanted to write that, and the truth is, I am on a train, leaving Seattle for Portland where I’ll board a plane that connects back to Seattle, then back to Houston; ending my west coast family visit and artsy tour. It’s Tuesday now, and I’m not back yet. Tragically, the train hit a trespasser as we passed through a rail yard near Tacoma, Washington. After a police investigation and then another delay behind a freight train, I arrived 3 hours late, just as my delayed flight left. Just another notch on my traveling belt, right? In my last column I wrote about my adventure to Eugene, Oregon, home of the oldest Saturday Market in the U.S. If the first part of my trip was about art markets, the second part was definitely about the artists. I bussed to Seattle to visit my good friend and artist, Lindsay Peyton. I may be outing her here (with permission), as most friends don’t know she took up residence in the rainy city. I liked Portland, and loved Eugene, but in Seattle I felt at home. Lindsay lives in an area called Ballard, and I wasn’t surprised to find great indie shops, galleries, artist studios and a lot of great restaurants, bars and pubs. Lindsay Peyton is currently painting still life scenes that you might encounter in everyday life. A living or dining room in a home, for example. I can see the inspiration an artist like her can get from a city like Seattle, especially in Ballard.

This section is old, founded about 125 years ago (by the loss of a coin toss I hear). I walked the main street where all the shops, restaurants and bars are. The flowering plants blend right in with the textures of the buildings, sidewalks and street - some brick paved, and the old wood, two story buildings and signage on the corners advertising nearby businesses had me

lost in another era. Only the faces buried in mobile phones gave away our time. One of our favorite stops was Hazelwood, a bar that served the best hot toddy I’ve ever had. Lindsay captured the interior looking in from the street on a 48x48 inch canvas paint-

ing. The atmosphere is like the charm of the neighborhood, add to those textures candelabras, wall sconces, chandeliers and bull skulls. See more of Lindsay’s work here: www.lindsaypeytonart.com My final stop was in Vancouver. A city I’ve explored before, where art car artist Michelle Kaiser lives. Kaiser, also known as Gypsy Mermaid, stopped in Houston a few years back while traveling the country in her homemade cargo van, turned RV. She calls it the Gypsy Caravan. In addition to mermaids adorning every surface, it is also outfitted with a deck and a working fountain. There’s a “fortune teller that rides in the passenger seat, tips are encouraged. When I first walked into her apartment, I thought we were in a costume shop. Mannequins are everywhere; standing, sitting, leaning and wearing many costumes covering at least several centuries and a couple other galaxies. Kaiser paints, sings, performs and is always wearing an outfit that most consider a costume. Yes, people are always snapping pictures of her. Until she returns to Houston, follow her on Facebook: Gypsy Mermaid. There is a Heights connection to both these artists. Lindsay first started showing her art in the Heights in 2005 at my show and continues today at places like Winter Street Studios Gallery. When Michelle last traveled through Houston, she sang in full Gypsy Mermaid regalia from the balcony of her Gypsy Mermaid caravan. I’m looking forward to returning to the First Saturday Arts Market family this weekend. We return to daytime hours 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Check out who is coming on the website 1stSatArtMarket.com and I’ll see you there. I’m home, Houston!

Labor Day kickoff at Down The Street This Thursday, Sept. 3, Down The Street will be kicking off Labor Day weekend with a pint night, with Ballast Point Brewing. The brewery hails from San Diego, CA, and there will be four Brews that will be offered – Big Eye, Longfin, Grapefruit Sculpin and the original Sculpin. All of these brews will be offered for $4 pints. The Sculpin has a 7% ABV and the beer’s use of hops creates hints of apricot, peach, mango and lemon flavors, but still packs a bit of a sting, (just like the Sculpin fish featured on the bottle label). The beer is seasonal during the summer, so catch it while it’s on tap. Down The Street will also offer $5 Habanero Sculpin Micheladas. Food will also be served with enchiladas on the menu. Try two shrimp enchiladas, topped w/ a creamy avocado, tomatillo, and Grapefruit Sculpin salsa - $16; two beef enchiladas, topped w/ a Habanero Sculpin salsa roja - $14. Leader Nibbles

Gatlin’s opening date delayed by city By Christina Martinez christina@theleadernews.com In the last couple of weeks Gatlin’s announced to their eager neighbors that they would be open for Labor Day, but the Houston permitting curse seems to be haunting this much awaited Oak Forest BBQ eatery, too. Their big opening date has not been confirmed, but the family did comment that they were hoping to open soon, and will once they can fix the problems that just surfaced from their last inspection. Sorry for the bad news, neighbors. Ka Sushi, almost there If you drive down Shepherd and pass by the soon-to-open sushi eatery, Ka Sushi, you’ll notice a packed parking lot, that shows promise of a September opening. An inquiry was sent to the restaurant this week regarding the packed parking lot in the hopes of getting word of a soft opening this month. No comment was reported before Nibbles went to press, but stay tuned.

Neighbors: Nancy Hill, at 65, wins Glamour Shots Cover Model Search By Elizabeth Villareal elizasgarden@outlook.com

Congratulations to Oak Forest resident Darlene Rabe. She recently submitted an article about her sixth grade teacher which was published in the September issue of Reader’s Digest. This is her first published article. Then, as a surprise to her, they paid her for the article. Way to go, Darlene! Lily Bowman, 14, a freshman at High School for the Performing and Visual Arts, is going to Washington, D.C. this weekend because she was invited to participate in the National Book Festival hosted by the Library of Congress. Lily and one other Houston teen were chosen to represent Houston (eight kids total around the country) in a poetry slam Saturday night as part of the festival. Over 100 famous authors and journalists will be there participating including Tom Brokaw,

Audrey Wood, and many others.

The Chairs for Charlie story that made the rounds last year about our dear, sweet neighbor Charlie George who passed away after a hard fought battle with leukemia, is featured in an upcoming issue of Woman’s World magazine! Let’s hear it for Nancy Hill, one of the winners of Glamour Shots Cover Model Search 2015! Hill is one of three runners up in the 40+ category nationwide after a well-publicized online voting period. Hill had Glamour Shot photos done as a self-esteem booster on the prompting of a friend after she made many lifestyle changes after a long illness. She said, “Little did I know the photos would turn out so great! When I say I’m better at 65 than ever, I mean it.” There were about 50 contestants in Hill’s category, and she was the only winner in the contest from Houston. Hill extends her sincer-

Many of our Leader Country neighbors along with folks from across the Houston Metropolitan area gathered on the banks of White Oak Bayou at Watonga Blvd. and West T.C. Jester Blvd. last Friday evening for a free event organized by The Houston Parks Board in partnership with the Houston Parks and Recreation Department along with the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department called “Bats on the Bayou.” Enthusiastic Houstonians of all ages came prepared with folding chairs and insect repellant to view tens of thousands of Mexican Free Tailed Bats. The nearly full moon rose in the east as the sun went down and added an ethereal glow – and yes, some of the bats flew right across the

bright moon once they emerged from underneath the Watonga Street bridges for their nightly flight and feeding frenzy. Children as well as adults enjoyed booths where they learned about bats from the experts, enjoyed “flameless” s’mores, and children’s sweet and shaky hands spooned wildflower seeds into baggies to take home in the hopes many small wildflower gardens will spring up across Houston and bringing more insects for the bats to enjoy. Mayor Annise Parker was there along the bayou with her partner, Kathy Hubbard, cordially greeting neighbors and taking numerous photos with bat enthusiasts. Dianna Ray was also there in the crowd of good natured neighbors (she’s the bassist for Mydolls - Houston’s celebrated female punk band). It was wonderful to see so many people being neighborly - a very nice end to the week.

Rail from P. 1A to work with Union Pacific to negotiate for right of way if needed.” The plan also doesn’t address the pressure from Houston officials for the railway to possibly be extended into downtown, much like the proposal for Dallas. Klein again pointed to residents’ desire to see the railway end at METRO’s Northwest Transit Center. “The reality is the center of Houston has shifted west and it would probably

better serve customers outside of the loop to put the end of the rail at the Northwest Transit Center which would also tie it into the existing transit network and would reach most of the major employment centers in town,” Klein said. Klein said organizations and representatives within the First Ward, Super Neighborhood #12 and #22 along with others continue to meet monthly to discuss the high-speed rail and the FRA’s next step

will be to further examine the utility corridor route and to evaluate the range of alignments within the corridor and potential alternatives. “We still need to be vigilant if we don’t want this infrastructure coming through our neighborhoods,” Klein said. “It’s important to ask candidates running for city council and mayor what their positions are and keep the topic front and center.”
