The League: Elite Training Facility trains Houston Texan Christian Covington in offseason By Christina Martinez Christina@theleadernews.com

Terry Williams’ love for competition started at a young age. The love developed in grade school, later attending the University of Texas, Williams’ love for competition only grew. Today, Williams has taken that love and turned it into his passion with his neighborhood gym, The League Elite Training Facility. Born and raised in Houston, Williams cheers for all of his Houston teams - the Texans being at the top of his 713 squads. Williams isn’t just a Texans fan, though. In the offseason, Williams serves as offseason coach to Defensive Lineman, Christian Covington. “I’ve really enjoyed working with Christian Covington,” Williams said. “Beyond being an incredibly gifted athlete, he’s genuinely a close friend, too. His biggest skill set is the speed he has for his size, which made him a big contributor to the Texans earning a merit of number one ranked total defense in the NFL last year, even with Watt out.” For athletes that approach Williams for private coaching, many will come with a list of objectives a coaching staff has made. These might be specific skill sets, an exact protocol of movements, or more general points of focus. For Covington, Williams said his offseason looks a bit different. “He’s a guy who has solidified his spot and consistently maintains the right weight, and is a workhorse in practices – so we get to have a bit more fun,” he said. “Instead of highly regimented movements in specified formats, he comes in and enjoys our PAC(K) Training classes among other members (they’re always so excited

2219 W 34th St #B www.packtraining.com “We also integrate some drills inspired by boxing and MMA, as a lot of football is a combination of quickness and power production,” he said. Celebrity athletes aren’t Williams’ only focus. He and wife Ashley have created a circuit training gym in the Garden Oaks/Oak Forest neighborhood that is based on using drills used by athletes and teams, like the Texans, modifying for a class environment and made accessible for all. “At The League, we have a

simple and unique format for our circuit training classes,” Williams said. “We call it PAC(K) Training, which stands for Power, Aerobics & Circuit training, with our mantra being ‘Keep Moving’. We remind everyone that it’s not a competition. We focus on form, pacing and rest periods. We are clear in our messaging of not worrying about being the fastest or the strongest, but rather to simply not give up, to keep moving; no matter the workload or speed.” With football season upon us, Williams’ advice to all of our high school athletes is simple: find balance in work and rest; work diligently on the field, but keep your focus on academics. “A student athlete’s potential, no matter how gifted they are, is limited when their classroom performance falls short,” he said. Bulldogs seek a return to prominence By Landan Kuhlmann landan@theleadernews.com While the 2016 season may not have panned out as planned for the Heights Bulldogs, a hungry and talented senior class, plus a roster burgeoning with gained experience, is poised to right the ship and regain the team’s swagger. Even though the Bulldogs wound up finding their way to a postseason berth, last season’s 4-7 mark denoted a

(hopefully momentary) step back for a program that had won 39 games over the previous five seasons under Head Coach Stephen Dixon’s watch. “Overall, we didn’t have the record we were expecting. I attribute that to playing some really good teams, tough teams that have been ranked among tops in the area, and it fell on us having a really young team,” Dixon said. “We’ve got a lot

Lions look to build on breakout 2016 By Landan Kuhlmann landan@theleadernews.com

Not too many seasons ago, the Lutheran High North program endured back-to-back winless seasons. But under the leadership of fourth-year head coach Nathan Robbins, a new class of Lions has steadily gained wins and confidence with each passing season — and hope 2017 brings more of the same. Robbins and the Lions experienced a breakout campaign of sorts in 2016, finishing 7-3 in the regular season before falling to Reicher Catholic in the first round of the TAPPS Division 3 playoffs, tying the 2007 and 2010 squads for the second-most wins in a single season in school history “Our success last year was predicated on beginning up front with the offensive and defensive lines, and it should be much the same this season,” Robbins said. “We’ve got a couple guys on offense that are starting new this year, so solidifying that offensive and defensive front will be a huge key.” Lutheran High North returns many key contributors from the 2016 squad on both sides of the football. Without having to reinvent the wheel, Robbins and his staff (many of whom have coached at the college level) already had a leg up for 2017, and have focused simply on ironing out the kinks during the offseason.

“We look to work on individual techniques (use of hands and feet, etc.) and really progress our players at each position,” he said. “We know it will come together schemewise if the kids know the technique and they grow at their individual position—the sum of the parts is greater than the whole. It’s about getting them coached up at every position.” Offense One of the few positions for which the Lions must accommodate a growing period is arguably the most important offensive position on the field, as Sophomore and first-time starter Christian Sims will take over the reins of a balanced attack that averaged about 24 points per game in 2016. Just as key to the season as the line of scrimmage, Robbins said, will lie in the development of Sims, whose skill set he likens to the recently-drafted Deshaun Watson. “Our offensive line has to be equally competent in both run and pass-blocking. Our coaching staff has done a great job taking some young men that haven’t played football before and coaching them up really well on the line of scrimmage,” he said. “[Christian] has got all the talent you need coming out of a double threat — a fast, elusive runner that can still more rely on his passing game. I think we’ll be a much-improved team weekby week as he grows.” Despite being a first-time

starter, Sims won’t be thrown to the wolves due to LHN’s experienced roster. Helping to ease the transition will be senior wideout Clay Phoenix (407 yards, 4 touchdowns in 2016), a polished route-runner who though undersized, has the ability to stretch the field with his speed and quickness. Helping keep Sims upright to find Phoenix will be senior two-way center and nose guard Lee Nino, whose strong presence on the line should pay major dividends in 2017. Defense On the other side of the ball, Robbins will lean on returning All-District corner Adam Hernandez, who recorded 16 tackles and 6 interceptions, including one returned for a touchdown, in 2016. “It’s nice to be able to put him on a receiver and be able to take [that guy] out of the

game,” Robbins said. Finally, in keeping with the theme of controlling the line of scrimmage, Robbins can deploy junior defensive lineman, Jimmy Walker (6’ 3’’, 245 pounds with a 4.8 40) who can create havoc on the edge, but can also slide over to tight end on the offensive side of the ball and split out wide. “He’s just a mismatch nightmare [everywhere] with his size and speed,” Robbins said. Under the steady hand of Robbins’ guidance, Lutheran High North has steadily grown once again into a burgeoning power, and looks to continue their ascension in 2017. That said, they will have their hands full in dethroning last year’s champions, Northland Christian, as well as overtaking Cypress Christian and Legacy Christian Academy. Their season will get underway with a home tilt vs. Milby on Friday, Sept. 1 at 7 p.m.

Eagles look to fly back atop TAPPS standings By Landan Kuhlmann landan@theleadernews.com

St. Thomas may have had a disappointing 5-6 finish in 2016, but a revamped coaching staff and schemes have its new head coach convinced it was simply a blip on the radar. Rich McGuire, who is entering his third season overall in the Eagles’ program after spending the previous two as an assistant, knows the 2016 season did not pan out as planned for a program that had won at least 10 games and a district title in each of the previous four seasons. With that said, he believes that a resurgence is on the horizon. Despite employing a new defensive coordinator, McGuire does not believe any major growing pains are in store on that side of the ball due to a wealth of experience between seniors Melvin Larkins, Kris Brolan, Jackson Hanna and Jackson Reese. “Defensively, we’ll be pretty similar, just have some new terminology — the kids have been picking it up pretty well,” McGuire said. “Every year as a coach you look for leadership, and there’s a good number of guys with some experience, so we’ve got some really good senior leadership there.” On the offensive side of the ball, however, it’s a different story, with some younger kids

set to play larger roles in 2017. McGuire and his staff will rely heavily on junior Peyton Matocha to take the reins of a new offense, revamped from the one that scored nearly 27 points per game in 2016. New offensive coordinator Jerrod Johnson is poised to bring a more wide-open attack than the Eagle faithful might be accustomed to seeing. “I think our offense is going to be good, but it is a new offense, so you always worry about growing pains with a new scheme and getting the kinks ironed out,” McGuire said. “It’s a new system with new terminology, so the kids are going to have to learn it fast and execute it. [Matocha] has got to step up, take the reins and make the offense his own — which we believe he can do.” As the offseason has progressed, McGuire and the staff have attempted to drive home the school’s motto “E-A-T” (Effort, Attitude and Tempo), which this year is a mix of standard expectations and different nuances. “Obviously, any coach looks for great effort, and as coaches and players we want to be supportive, try to build people up and not tear them down,” McGuire said. “We’re also going to have to get used to playing with some tempo, because pretty much everyone is play-

ing that way [now].” While the ultimate goal remains triumph on the gridiron and a return to their customary spot, McGuire and his staff also preach something more. “I loved football and everything about it [when I played], and that’s what I want kids to come away with when they graduate — just a love for the game. I want them to enjoy playing, enjoy practice and want to keep playing,” he said.

“Whether than means we have 10 Division I signees every year or zero, but have 10 kids that want to go play Division III football just because they love playing the game — that’s what I’m trying to instill in these kids.” St. Thomas will look to begin its flight back to the top of TAPPS 6A District 3 with an away game against Kinkaid Friday, Sept. 1 at 7 p.m.

SPX hungry for elusive state title By Landan Kuhlmann landan@theleadernews.com

From the outside looking in, an 11-1 season with a trip to the state semifinals would seem like an accomplishment — but the SPX Panthers refuse to accept anything less than a title, and head into 2017 with a chip on their shoulders. “Our kids would tell you that even though we had a winning season, it’s a disappointment — which is hard to say considering we had an undefeated season and won a district championship, SPX Head Coach Stephen Hill said of the team’s season before falling to Bishop Dunne in the 2016 TAPPS state semifinals. That perceived disappointment has driven players and coaches throughout the summer as they look to clear the final hurdle and bring that title back to Panther country. “We want to get over that hump — our school has a rich tradition with a lot of state titles, and we haven’t won one in a good while, Hill said One of the reasons a deep run eluded them last year, he said, was that SPX previously did not have an athletic training period (which they now do), so athletes were unable to keep up a constant in-house workout regimen throughout the season. “The stuff they did during

the summer, they lost throughout the season, he said. “I think being able to have that strength, being able to hold up against the bigger schools, is key. From the moment 2016 ended, Hill said his staff has been working on ways to maintain strength and keep the team going throughout the season’s dog days. “We’re going to be in the right spot and right position, but I don’t have all the guys Cinco Ranch or Katy does, Hill said. “We’ve got about 40 guys on our roster, and we fall off pretty heavily, so our big deal is trying to keep kids healthy. We’ve got to be smart about how we handle them and make sure they stay healthy for Friday nights. It may be hard to imagine a team that has been within a game of the ultimate prize in back-to-back seasons would need a confidence boost, but another offseason development seems to have done so for the Panthers, who made a run to the Sweet Sixteen of the state’s Division 1 7-on-7 State Tournament in June. Not even picked to make it out of the top two in their pool, Hill and the Panthers shocked many by not only winning their group, but sweeping through some of the state’s biggest and best teams, ending up among the final 16 teams standing

at the state’s highest level of competition. “For our kids, it was validation that we can go play with anybody—we’re getting put in front of some of the biggest names in Houston, and we’re beating them, Hill said. “For our kids to be able to go out and compete with those guys is amazing. In the state of Texas, to be in the Sweet Sixteen is pretty sweet.

On the offensive side of the ball for the Panthers, star quarterback and Texas A&M commit Grant Gunnell draws many of the eyes, but the Panthers are more than a one-trick pony. Gunnell can spread the ball around to senior and Northwestern commit Jacob JefferSee Panthers P. 9B

Rams poised to take next step in 2017

Go Rams! Best wishes for a great season.

By Landan Kuhlmann landan@theleadernews.com

The Waltrip Rams have experienced three straight winning seasons for the first time in program history — but Coach Todd Wright and a senior-laden group have their eyes set on a higher prize after their first taste of true playoff competitiveness in 2016. Last season’s 7-4 campaign represented a step forward for a program which had only won that many games once before in school history, and the progress has Wright and his staff believing the Rams enter 2017 on the cusp a breakthrough season. “This senior class got to taste what it was like to actually have a chance to compete in a playoff game, the fourthyear head coach said of last season’s 28-24 heartbreaker to Wheatley. “My first two seasons, Stratford got after us pretty good, and we got a taste of how far away we were. Last year we got a matchup that was favorable to us. For Wright, everything begins and ends with that talented and hungry senior class setting the tone for 2017. “Our competition’s been great in making the younger guys play up to them, and that’s something we’ve been working towards, he said. “We’ve worked hard as a staff to put our program on the map, and we’re trying to create a suburban feel to our program, since that’s what we’re competing against in the playoffs. We have a chance to really be competitive this year, and it starts with that strong senior class. Wright believes the 2017 squad has leaders in every position group, but made special note of senior defensive lineman Tyrell Buard and offensive lineman Jonah Butler, reiterating a belief that effort spirals out from up front. “These are both big strong kids that work hard. When that group of linemen works hard, I think everyone kind of filters off of that energy, so we’re really looking forward to them leading the program, he said. Not to be lost in the shuffle, however, is senior quarterback Cameron Howe, senior wideout Samuel Lemond, senior linebacker Aaron Rose and a defensive backfield composed

entirely of upperclassmen. “We feel so good because we’re not just relying on that one senior — we have about 15 out there, and they’re all taking a good leadership position, Wright said. “The coaching staff here has done a great job, and they’ve done things that will hopefully make our program a model to follow for years to come. This past offseason, it was simply about good old-fashioned competition both on the field and in the classroom. Spurring it, according to Wright, is a combination the players’ natural desire for competition on the field along with a pretty unprecedented sight off it. “For the first time since I’ve been here, we’re having multiple kids getting recruited who should have a chance to continue on playing, and I think they were excited when they started seeing college coaches walking through the halls, he said, noting last season’s group was a bit of a groundbreaker. “We’d always had a couple, but this past spring they came every day. Our kids got to see that, and I think that raised the bar [for the kids]. They really bought into it — you always talk about all those things it takes to get recruited, but until the kids get to see those recruiters coming to your campus, I don’t know that they really understand it. In that vein, Wright said this year’s senior class has already shown a propensity for stepping up and setting the right attitude and example both

on an off the field, beginning in the dog days of Houston’s summer. Waltrip had a Princeton Review for the SAT’s and ACT program donated to the school, and multiple players were among those trekking out to 34th Street for extra work. “We had seven or eight seniors show up on a Saturday to work on improving their SAT scores, Wright said. “To me that’s exciting, because the kids could have something else to do, but now they’ve all seen what it can do. And that act, he said, is just as satisfying for the coaching staff as any impact those

players could ever make on the gridiron, and has him most amped up for the impending season. “It showed leadership that those kids would go work on those test scores, he said. “I’ve got great assistance coaches that preach it, and they show it and live it it—it takes a couple years to make your mark on things, and we’ve been able to do that. The Rams begin their quest for glory Saturday, Sept. 2 against Huntsville.

Photo by Landan Kuhlmann Shown here is the Scarborough Spartans 2017 varsity football team. Following back-to-back seaons with wins, head coach Keith Alex believes they can only progress up as their numbers grow, and believes he has a team that can start them in the right direction.

Scarborough eyes continued progress By Landan Kuhlmann landan@theleadernews.com

The past is just that -- over and done. As such, the Scarborough Spartans see only one direction to go -- up. Coming off back-to-back seasons with wins (a step forward for a program which went five full seasons without a win from 2010-2014), Scarborough Spartans Head Coach Keith Alex believes the Spartans can compete if the chips fall in their favor. Alex said the key, as it was last season, lies in fielding a

team with the manpower to rest players and play to their skill sets. Alex believes district competition can be in the near future should they continue to grow. “I feel that as we build up our numbers, we can become more competitive, he said Saturday. Until then, Alex will rely on the leadership of seniors Salvador Gutierrez and Jared Holley as well as sophomore Anthony Williams as the Spartans search for some firmer footing. “These players have been

working hard recently to become more vocal leaders and show the younger players how to work hard, Alex said of the trio. “Being motivated on a struggling team can be challenging, but I feel these players see the benefit of hard work and they are trying to lead by example. With Scarborough’s smaller roster size relative to many in the district, Alex said maintaining players’ strength and conditioning for playing in the dog days of summer and the sweltering Texas heat has become even more of an em-

phasis in the offseason and fall practice. “We are receiving a new weight room in a couple of weeks, and I know that this will help us tremendously, he said. Every coach’s goal remains success on the gridiron, but many (such as Alex) also desire to develop young men who are accountable both on and off the field — not just great football players. Alex believes last season saw a step forward See Spartans P. 9B

Bulldogs from P. 2B of experience coming back on both sides of the ball, and I’m looking for more growth, development, leadership, and most of all discipline. The talent has always been there, but talent’s not always going to win games. Dixon said he will look to seniors Joshua Reed, Jacoby Hopkins, Marco Domio Kameron Curtis, Kameron Williams and Erick Hubert, as well as junior offensive lineman Michael Infante to right the ship and raise the Bulldogs back to their customary spot among 18-6A’s best. Reed has amassed 116 tackles and nine sacks over the last two seasons, while Hubert (four interceptions in 2016) has patrolled the defensive backfield alongside Jalen Green for the last two seasons. Hopkins (755 receiving yards, 7 TD’s in 2016), Curtis and Williams return to help lead a dynamic offensive attack for the Bulldogs. “We just have a host of guys who have been starting for a while now that are definitely ready, with their experience, to

lead this team to where we’re accustomed to, Dixon said. The Bulldogs are going to bring the house on defense, and pressure the ball carrier every snap — they know it, and opponents know it. But while 2017 brings with it the same mentality and aggressiveness that has defined the Bulldogs during Dixon’s tenure, he believes the group’s core strength will emanate from a different source this season. “We’ve switched around defensively a bit. It’s always been great for us, but now our strength is in our defensive backfield, he said. While the first player that springs to mind (for good reason) in this group might be Green (a senior and Texas commit), Dixon said his star corner is just the tip of the iceberg. The Bulldogs can also deploy Domio and a host of others to round out what may just be the most talent-laden group Dixon has ever had at his disposal — leading to a slight change in philosophy. “We have several young

men back there with a ton of talent, and I think when you have a slew of secondary guys back there, it’s better to get them on the field when you don’t have as many linebackers, Dixon said. “Our strength is definitely going to be built around our secondary. We’re still going to bring the pressure. Heights has also switched offensive coordinators, which Dixon said should lead to a more balanced, dynamic offensive attack. “I think we’re going to be more versatile than what we’ve done in the past, and I expect us to have not only a great passing game but also a dynamic running game with the direction we’ve gone, he said. Teaching men Once the bright Friday night lights fade away for a final time, some will take their talent to the next level. For some, however, those nights on the field with their brothers may be the peak of their sports career—thus Dixon and the

Panthers from P. 5B son, (1,274 yards and 15 TD’s in 2016), who Hill calls “as dangerous as anybody when he gets the ball, as well as Chase Lane (himself committed to Texas A&M) and Jaylen Curry out on the edge. Additionally, Hill said junior Kaleb Ducross could be the key to propelling a prolific attack. “He’s naturally a receiver, but we don’t have a true running back in the program, so we’re going to use him there as well, he said. “We’re also going to put him out wide at times. [His versatility] gives us the chance to move him around and do some good things with it. Last year’s run saw the Panthers light up the scoreboard, averaging nearly 49 points per game while outscoring opponents 584-189, and Hill expects it to be much of the same in 2017.

“There’s a lot of moving parts, but I don’t expect anything less than what we did last year, especially with the addition of our offensive line to help keep Grant off the ground, he said. Defensively, everything starts with returning Defensive Player of the Year in senior Jacob Craig, a 1st Team All-State selection and District MVP in 2016. From there, things move to Tommy Goode at the nose tackle, who Hill expects to a massive force in the middle, along with senior linebacker Bruno Forestieri, himself an All-State selection in 2016. On the back end, Hill highlighted senior safety Ricky Lester, who led the team with 129 tackles to go along with five interceptions in 2016. St. Pius will also be asking those such as Jarvis Johnson, a former WR who is transition-

ing to the other side of the football, and George Ranch transfer Colby Bonds, to step up in their new roles and help St. Pius win that coveted state title. “We lost some key guys defensively, but we’re going to need some of those younger guys to step up — it’s next man up, Hill said.

Heights staff strive to instill the school’s core values of respect and accountability on and off the gridiron into each and every young man that passes through the Heights locker room. “First and foremost, our goal is to not only build a great football player, but also to build great young men that in the future will be great fathers, great husbands and great members of this community, he said. The Bulldogs begin their redemption tour with a home game Aug. 27 against Fort Bend Travis.

during and after practice which serve a dual purpose. “We want them to develop their own voices and perspective that can help them be leaders not only on the football field, but in life, he said. Scarborough kicks off its 2017 campaign against Austin Sept. 1 at 7 p.m. at Dyer Stadium.

Spartans from P. 6B in the classroom, and looks to improve upon that in in 2017. Further, he believes the ‘team’ is more than that—it’s a brotherhood, a bond, and potential avenue to a better life; but not just athletically.
