VanGo offers ride sharing for schoolchildren By Betsy Denson betsy@theleadernews.com
Kingwood native Claudia Pinto found out about VanGo, a ride-sharing company for kids that recently expanded to Houston, on care.com. Mother to a teen and young adult, Pinto was looking for a flexible schedule and a way to bring in some extra income. So she became one of the first 10 VanGo drivers in Houston. “I started work this July and it’s been great,” Pinto said. “I’ve had a lot of theater-camp kids (as riders) and now it’s cheer camps and band camps. Most of my clients are in the West University area, but as more people know about it, I’ll pick up more rides in my area.” Getting the word out is Marta Jamrozik, a Brooklyn, New York resident with a technology background who made Forbes Magazine’s “30 Under 30” list. Jamrozik founded VanGo in June 2018 “to tackle the working mom’s second shift.” The business kicked off by offering a ride-share program in Fairfield, Connecticut, and now has expanded to Phoenix and Houston. Jamrozik said those two cities were top picks of parents who downloaded the app and responded to a
query about preferred locations for ride booking. Jamrozik said her mother worked full-time and also did the majority of the child care and housekeeping. “VanGo was built entirely to support working moms and to facilitate relationships in a community,” Jamrozik said. As Pinto put it, her clients are old enough to ride with a stranger but too young to drive. Jamrozik said kids 8 years old and up can ride on VanGo. The app requires 48 hours of advance notice, and parents can mark preferred drivers as favorites and have first access to them. There are options for one-time rides or repeated trips. The cost of a ride is 15 to 20 percent more than Uber or Lyft, but Jamrozik said the vetting process for VanGo drivers is much more rigorous. She said drivers must have more than three years of childcare experience. Background checks, finger printing, vehicle inspection and referrals are also musts. Drivers get paid on a per-ride basis and can make $100-$200 per week. Jamrozik said VanGo’s Houston drivers are coming from all over the city. “We’re actively adding drivers,” Jamrozik said. “We’re

Area business owners without a dedicated office space now have a place to call their own. In early July, Office Depot, Inc. opened five new “Workonomy Hub” co-working spaces in the United States. One of them located at the Office Depot at 1401 North Loop West. The shared workspaces are integrated into existing Office Depot retail locations and offer products and services to help small business owners, entrepreneurs, freelancers and remote workers. “The Houston metropolitan area is one of the largest in the nation with a vibrant and thriving business community,” Office Depot spokesperson Shera Bishop said. “We believe Office Depot’s current suite of products and services paired with a physical co-working space will create a comprehensive offering for Houston small business owners to run and grow their businesses in one convenient location.” Dominick Wagner is the coworking manager at the Workonomy Hub on the North Loop. Neighbors: Kolmetz family takes tour of Wyoming By Elizabeth Villarreal elizasgarden@outlook.com
The Kolmetz family, our neighbors in Shepherd Park Plaza, recently took a long summer vacation road trip to beautiful Wyoming. Jonathan, Kristi, Jackson (8 years old), Benjamin (7) and Charlotte (3) enjoyed touring Jackson Hole and visiting the Teton Range, Jenny Lake and Yellowstone National Park. The family attended a memorial service for Kristi’s grandfather in Greybull, Wyoming. Fun facts: The Kolmetz family drove almost 3,900 miles round trip and spent more than 83 hours in the car! The family arrived in Wyoming on July 4, spent the night in Cheyenne and checked out downtown Cheyenne. They next traveled to Jackson Hole and participated in the Bar T 5 chuck wagon cookout, where the group traveled by horse and wagon to a campsite for dinner and entertainment. Other highlights of the trip were floating the Snake River, playing in the snow, hiking, riding the tram on the Teton Mountains, walking around Jackson Square

and hiking Jenny Lake, where they saw the most amazing waterfalls. Next, the family arrived in Yellowstone and spent three days touring the park. Some of the sights included Old Faithful, Grand Prismatic Spring and lots of wildlife! Finally, the Kolmetz crew spent
a few days in Shell and Greybull, touring the towns where Kristi’s dad grew up, and they hiked, fished and had quality family time. The family would like to send a warm shout-out to Elyssa Horvath, who recommended the chuck wagon ride with Bar T 5 in Jackson Hole.
The family also would like to thank their 10-year-old neighbor Sarah Myers for keeping their cat fed while they were gone. Thank you, Kolmetz family, for sharing your adventure! Heights neighbor Rebecca Bridges just returned to Houston from visiting family in Massachusetts for two weeks. Bridges spent time on the beach and explored Cape Cod. She shared she loves Paws Pet Resort and usually uses them for boarding, but this time, being gone 20 days, she was looking to cut costs and used Mandi’s Mutts. Proprietor Amanda Newman stayed at Bridges’ home the entire time, which included the Fourth of July, which everyone knows is a horrible night for dogs, but thankfully all was well. Bridges has begun writing a blog called Houston Dog Mom (@houstondogmom) on Facebook and invites neighbors to check it out. The Cunningham family of Garden Oaks had a fabulous summer vacation when they traveled to Orlando and St. Augustine, Florida. Jason and Alisha’s daughters, Lela (15) and Katie (13), experi-
enced their first amusement park at Universal Studios. The teens also enjoyed learning about their Spaniard roots on their mother’s side in St. Augustine. The Cunninghams want to give a huge shout-out to their neighbor Bonnie Hernandez who was so kind to volunteer and watched their two dogs, rabbit and hamster. Bonnie welcomed the family home with happy pets, flowers and snacks. The Cunninghams are grateful for good neighbors and said, “Thank you, Bonnie!” Lordy, lordy, look who’s 40! Happy, happy birthday to Jennifer Black Graham, who blew out 40 candles July 31. Lots of love from her mom, Jeanette Black, and her daughter, Elizabeth Ann Graham. Jennifer Black Graham will soon enjoy a girls’ trip to the Bahamas with three of her BFFs to extend her birthday celebration in the best way with fun in the sun.
