One family has been left with too many questions and not enough answers as multiple agencies continue to investigate the tragic death of 3-year-old Raymond Pryer at a local day care last week. Police say Pryor was left in a hot day care van for hours upon returning from a field trip. As of press time, nobody has been charged in the incident. “It’s tragic that children are left alone in a van, especially in the heat of the summer, with record heat happening right now,” HPD Assistant Chief Bobby Dobbins said at a press conference Friday. “We all have to be aware of both children and the elderly that we might leave in vehicles. This is just one more incident where what shouldn’t have happened, happened – and it ended tragically.” According to police, 28 students from Discovering Me Academy – located in the 8000 block of Antoine Drive Photo by Landan – had gone on a Kuhlmann Multiple agencies are field trip to Doss investigating after Park Thursday morning for finger- a recent incident painting and outdoor at Discovering Me activities, along with Academy. one bus driver and another chaperone. The children left the day care around 10 a.m. and returned between 2 and 2:30 p.m., and all were thought to be accounted for inside the daycare. Police say it was not until 6:30 p.m., when the boy’s father arrived to pick him up, when employees and authorities found the boy unresponsive inside the bus. Investigators believe the child was inside the bus for nearly 4 hours, where the temperature inside was measured at 113 degrees when Harris County Precinct 1 Constable’s Office deputies arrived on scene. The child was then transported to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly before 8 p.m. The bus driver and chaperone were de-

to showcase that this was this eclectic neighborhood – a small town in a big city. It suits the Heights,” said Mitch Cohen, organizer of the Heights First Saturday Arts Market and manager of the artists participating in White Linen Night. By 2009, White Linen Night had almost overflowed its banks, so to speak. Every single year, Cohen said, the event teemed with many more attendees, as thousands flocked to see homegrown Houston artists and independently-

World Series dream comes true for local team “It was fun meeting and playing other teams from around Texas.”

By Betsy Denson betsy@theleadernews.com Every baseball loving kid dreams about going the distance and for one Timbergrove Sports Association select team, those dreams came to fruition as the Timbergrove Thunder 10U placed third overall in the United States Specialty Sports Association Baseball World Series. As their coach Andrew Slania explains, USSSA Baseball is different than Little League Baseball, which used to be the only league. “USSSA has really taken off in the last 12 to 15 years,” said Slania. “In many ways, USSSA is more advanced, playing with the real baseball rules, including lead offs and steals.”

USSSA has over 42,000 teams registered with players ranging in age from 5-18. There are World Series games for every age group held in a few locations, including Alabama, Michigan, and California. “For the third year, Texas has been able to be a host state,” said Slania. Texas hosted 10U
