Since the dawn of humankind, people have enjoyed of the health benefits of honey. The Smithsonian states that honey’s earliest recorded use as medicine comes from Sumerian clay tablets, where it was included in 30 percent of prescriptions. The ancient Egyptians, Greeks and Romans also used honey in treatments. It is little wonder that some forward-thinking locals are looking back in time for honey’s healing qualities. Last October, The Leader published a story about the the

Rainbow Lodge when owner Donnette Hansen introduced three beehives to her magnificent garden on her Ella Boulevard property. Last week, Hansen celebrated her first yield. “We harvested 45 pounds of Honey,” Hanson said. “We are not selling it at this time, but we’ve already added it to recipes at the restaurant. We are serving a honey-glazed pheasant and honey-glazed apricots. And we offer every person who comes in, a little sample of raw honey comb when they arrive. Honey is very good for people, and we want to share it.” Indeed, medical experts agree that honey contains

flavonoids and antioxidants which reduce the risk of some cancers and heart disease. Honey can soothe many gastrointestinal disorders; it has been used throughout history as a topical anti-bacterial, and anti-fungal agent, and honey can reduce a cough and sore throat irritation. According to Hansen, beekeeping itself also has a soothing quality on the human spirit. The restaurateur loves to sit in the garden with a cup of coffee in the mornings and watch her bees work. “They are mysSee Honey P. 2B

No one needs a thermometer to know it’s hot – you just have to step outside. The hotter it gets though the better you need to protect yourself against both heat exhaustion and heat stroke – and you need to recognize the symptoms so that you can get treatment before things get serious. Memorial Hermann’s Dr. Minesh Desai is board certified in internal medicine and has an office on 19th Street. He said that he’s seen one patient in last two weeks with heat exhaustion and two with heat stroke. Dr. Desai says the two share similar characteristics like dizziness, nausea, rapid pulse and fatigue, but with heat stroke, the patient has a temperature of 103 degrees or higher and is dry, where someone suffering from heat exhaustion will be sweaty, moist and pale, and their skin will feel cooler. Risk factors for heat related illnesses include an age above 65, or having a history of heart disease or mental illness. Those using diuretics are already at risk for dehydration. However, Dr. Desai says that anyone is at risk and needs to take certain precautions like wearing loose light clothing, wide brimmed hats and at least an SPF 30+ if you are going to be outside. In addition, limit outdoor activities to times the sun is not at its peak. The consumption of alcohol and sugary drinks outdoors predisposes you to heat related illness. So enjoy your margarita indoors. If you are outside and feel like something’s wrong, listen to your instincts. “The key thing is to get indoors,” said Dr. Desai. “Then to hydrate with water and let someone else know you’re not feeling well so you can get medical treatment if needed. If there’s any hesitation, it’s best to get treatment.” For heat stroke patients, Dr. Desai says they will wet the patient’s clothing to add moisture and aid them in cooling down. If they can’t get the patient’s temperature down fast enough, then it’s a trip to the emergency room. Protect your children And it may not just be you that you need to watch out for. Children are at increased risk according to Dr. Kay Leaming-Van Zandt, Medical Director at Texas Children’s Hospital West Campus Emergency Center. “For various reasons, children do not adapt as effectively as adults when exposed to high climatic heat stress,” she said. “Children have a greater sur-
