High-risk pregnancy care now available in the Heights Memorial Hermann Greater Heights For The Leader Delivering a healthy baby is every woman’s goal, but sometimes medical conditions require extra attention for the mother and baby. This high-level care is now available in the Heights with the opening of the High-Risk Pregnancy Center at Memorial Hermann Greater Heights Hospital. The Center will be staffed by affiliated maternal-fetal medicine specialists from UT Physicians. Every Thursday, a team from the Texas Medical Center travels to the Center at Memorial Hermann Greater Heights to provide onsite diagnostic testing, genetic counseling and highly specialized care close to home for women with high-risk pregnancies. The team includes affiliated physicians with board certification in obstetrics-gynecology and maternal-fetal medicine as well as sonographers and genetic counselors. “For the first time, women who live in the Heights who need this higher level of care and service can receive it all within the community,” says Sean Blackwell, M.D., the affiliated maternal-fetal medicine physician who heads the specialized Center. Expert, Supportive Care for Growing Families Obstetricians refer women to the Center because of medical conditions, such as diabetes, high blood pressure, twins or multiples, advanced maternal age, genetic conditions, cancer, thyroid disease, blood clotting problems and obesity, or if fetal complications are detected. Some women visit the Center once, while others receive collaborative care throughout their pregnancy from both the Center’s maternal-fetal medicine specialist and their regular obstetrician. The family-friendly Center, located on the 4th floor of Memorial Hermann Greater Heights, offers a wide variety of advanced tests to

monitor fetal development. Among the tests performed are 3-D comprehensive and targeted fetal ultrasounds, biophysical profiles, amniocentesis, Doppler studies, non-stress tests and noninvasive prenatal testing (NIPT). “Up to 40 percent of women have some high-risk aspect to their pregnancy,” explains Dr. Blackwell, who is also professor and chair of the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Sciences at McGovern Medical School at UTHealth. “A high-risk pregnancy team partners with the OB/GYN physicians at Memorial Hermann Greater Heights so we can help treat conditions more closely and identify potential complications earlier. Every baby, whether deliv-
ered full term or preterm, deserves a healthy mother.” Because UTHealth’s Division of Maternal-Fetal Medicine is one of only 12 premier clinical centers in the U.S. participating in the NICHD-sponsored Maternal-Fetal Medicine Units Network, women who come to the Center at Memorial Hermann Greater Heights have access to treatments that are not yet widely available. Treatments being studied include those to reduce preterm birth, cesarean deliveries, surgical site infections and postpartum bleeding. “We are definitely on the cutting edge of treatments for moms and babies,” says Dr. Blackwell. Fast Access to Higher Levels of Care
Dr. Blackwell also highlights the continuity of care for women and their babies if a serious problem requires immediate, acute intervention. “The home base for our UT highrisk pregnancy team is in the Texas Medical Center at Children’s Memorial Hermann Hospital where we have a Level 4 neonatal intensive care unit, plus numerous specialists. If a truly complex or serious condition arises, we can get our moms and babies there quickly for care.” To learn more about the HighRisk Pregnancy Center at Memorial Hermann Greater Heights, call 713-867-6361, or visit memorialhermann.org/heights.

FDA labeling: No more hidden sugars Dr. Stephanie Fulton
By Brittany Link, MSW, RD, LD For The Leader It has become general knowledge that excess sugar intake can cause weight gain. More recently though research has linked its overconsumption to the increased likelihood of developing diseases such as hypertension, cavities, obesity, type II diabetes, heart disease, and cancer. As this information becomes more public, a variety of diets have emerged that focus on cutting down on sugar intake such as the Whole 30 or the Sugar Cleanse. While the fact that the public is beginning to focus more on cutting out excess sugar intake is a great first step, the problem lies in that you practically have to be a nutrition expert to make educated decisions on what foods to avoid due to their excess sugar content. The reason for this is twofold; first there are over 200 kinds of added sugars that can be used in food products, with uncommon names such as Xylose, Treacle, Dextrin, and Glucomalt to name a few. Second, there is not a clear understanding of how much sugar is appropriate to be consuming daily. To make things even more complicated, some foods have naturally occurring sugars such as the lactose in dairy products like milk or yogurt. This makes it difficult to decipher – which yogurt only has the naturally occurring sugars in it and which yogurt has added

sugar. You may be wondering why this even matters. While it’s true that both added sugar and naturally occurring sugars have the same effect on the body physiologically – everything eventually breaks down to glucose in your body. Naturally occurring sugars are also sources of nutrients such as vitamins and minerals while added sugars are extra sugars added to foods, increasing their calories without providing any additional nutrients. Luckily, all this label confusion is coming to an end. The FDA has implemented a new food label that has an added sugars section. This means that the label will show how many sugars are in a food in total, and then below it there will be a section stating how much of the sugar in that food is added sugar. Not only does
this take the guesswork out of deciphering the ingredient list (something you should still look at!) it also makes it clear when a food has naturally occurring sugar and how much. This new label goes a step further though and has assigned a % Daily Value to the added sugars section. This new section will help people become aware of how much added sugar they should be consuming each day and make educated decisions on the products they choose based on that information. Placing the Daily Value directly on the food label will make this information accessible to everyone and make it easier to access at the time of consumption and purchase. It is important to note that while artificial sugars (Stevia, Splenda, Sorbitol, Sweet ‘N Low) have become a concern to many Americans, they
will not be included in the added sugars section. This is because the main concern being addressed with the new food label is the excessive calories being consumed from added sugars without any nutrient content, which is not a concern for artificial sweeteners. This is why it is still always important to read the ingredients in a product before you purchase it. While we are especially excited here at Advice for Eating about the added sugars section of the new food label, there will be some other exciting changes making the label even more user friendly. Keep on the lookout for the new food label – some companies are already implementing it, but come July 2018 all food labels will be required to follow the new FDA guidelines.

MHGH now offering robot-assisted surgery By Landan Kuhlmann landan@theleadernews.com Surgery is not typically a cause for excitement, but Memorial Hermann Greater Heights has joined the wider trend of attempting to provide patients an alternative option which could result in speedier operations — always a fan favorite. Memorial Hermann Greater Heights Hospital recently introduced the DaVinci robotassisted surgery to its patient options, with the first operation taking place May 15. In a robotically-assisted procedure, the surgeon uses the machine to manipulate instruments, allowing for attempts at more precise control on actions such as incision and removal in contrast to typical “open” surgery. Easier operation With the robot, Dr. Jorge Leiva, a general surgeon affiliated with Memorial Hermann Greater Heights Hospital, said surgeons operate through a few small incisions following a few specifically placed ports of general anesthesia. The surgeon sits at a console (normally inside the room) and slips their fingers into small sleeves and operate via a 3-D image magnified 10 times the normal view. “It’s just another way of doing what you can do with laparoscopic surgery, with minimal invasion and incision,” Leiva said. “Most of what we’re doing at this point is extrapolating the laparoscopic techniques into robotic techniques. We have been able to identify which parts of the procedure we can do better with laparoscopy alone and which can be done better with the robot.” Leiva said the robot’s wristed instruments allow surgeons enhanced dexterity and control not typically humanly possible over the course of an operation. The robot’s multiple arms (one for the camera and three for holding surgical instruments) rotate, extend and retract on multiple joints akin to fingers. “You have instruments that can take any different angle and any rotation that you typically could not achieve with the laparoscopic,” Leiva said. “You can suture with your forehand or backhand, so it makes you ambidextrous.” Having done robotic surgeries for about four years, Leiva cautioned that, depending on the surgeon’s training, there is a learning curve, thus many procedures will take a little longer at the beginning. However, he said in many cases the robotic

surgery could likely become a speedier, more efficient solution than open surgery. “For general surgeons, we have surgeries that we do in all four parts of the abdomen, and you have to anticipate what your needs are going to be with your port placement, and that made it more difficult for us at the beginning,” he said. “Depending on what region the surgery is in, it’s easier for us to do it with the robot as opposed to laparoscopically.” He said many have taken to the promise of such an operation being minimally invasive, which is usually associated with a shorter recovery, less post-op pain and cleaner incisions on procedures that can potentially be very complex, minimizing bigger incisions. “They start to see the benefits, so we’re starting to see a shift over to where the patients are pushing for these surgeries to be done robotically,” he said. “There’s the perception that this is a much more sophisticated or contemporary way to do surgery, and they’re beginning to ask.” Educated public a key When the technology was first introduced, Leiva said the emphasis was on surgeons telling patients whether typical (open) surgery or roboticassisted surgery was their best option. However as the volume of robotic-assisted surgeries have spiked, he said there has been a monumental shift in landscape. “This eventually migrated into the desires of the surgeon to operate this way, and it used to be where we told the patient we would like to do surgery robotically, and explain what we
could offer to them,” he said. “But that has grown to the point where some of the patients have become educated and very proactive in getting all of the information.” Many patients, according to Leiva, are now proactive in looking at the reviews (of the surgeons) online and reviewing the possible pros and cons of robotically—assisted surgery. “As long as you can make sure that you’re doing the same surgery you could be doing open, the patient’s safety is not compromised and that your outcomes are good, I think this is definitely a tool that can offer patients more efficient ways that are safer, with faster recoveries,” he said.

Neighbors: Troop 21 bake sale a success By Elizabeth Villareal elizasgarden@outlook.com
The Garden Oaks, Oak Forest, Shepherd Park and surrounding neighborhoods, local organizations and businesses provided loving support to Girl Scout Troop 21 at their fourth Annual Bake Sale on April 28. A wonderful Troop in our area of Houston which has been in existence for more than 30 years, its members are 25 very special women ranging in age from their 20s to their 60s. Troop 21 was originally founded in 1976 and is actually the oldest Girl Scout Troop in the USA. Yes, really. Some of the original members who were young women at the time of the founding of the Troop remain members today, attending meetings and earning badges under the leadership of some of your neighbors - Carol Wiggs, Tina Sabuco, Shellye Arnold, Rita Loden, Rebecca Weiner and Nancy Abercrombie. Beloved Leader Charlotte Sewell began leading Troop 21 in 1976 and several years ago declining health forced her to retire. At that time, ABC News ran a story about the Troop and its search for a new leader and several people signed up to lead the troop. Sabuco, Arnold, and Wiggs are three of those original “new” leaders and they have remained with the Troop, dedicated to keeping it going. The Scouts have monthly meetings and enjoy arts and crafts, love to sing Girl Scout songs, and their unique sisterhood and community is a very important part of their lives. The Troop is not allowed by GSUSA to sell cookies as a fundraiser, so after funding activities out of their own pockets
for a few years, the leaders decided to hold a bake sale which was very successful. The bake sale and proceeds will help the leaders create special outings, buy art supplies, snacks, prizes and little gifts, also to supply vests and badges, provide visits by special friends such as Santa Patrick at Christmastime, and more. In addition to the opportunity for Troop 21 Scouts to interact with local neighbors, highlights of the event included the participation of Brownie Troop 122017 who sold lemonade, baked goods alongside Troop 21, and then donated their proceeds directly to Troop 21, and very popular baked treats were available for canine visitors to the sale. Troop 21 would like to thank Troop 122017 and their families as well as all of the neighbors and friends who supported by baking goods, volunteering, spreading the word, contributing, helping with logistics, purchasing goods and so much more: Girl Scout Troop 24130; Heights Mobil Car Care; Liberation Gluten-Free Bakery; Hugs and Donuts; Best Blueprint; the Padilla family; the Odinet family; Megan and Taylor Ryan; the Saunders family; Francis Schwartz; Susan and Keith Kostelecky; Cindy and John Bartos and Buddy; Sue Shefman; Stacey and Callan Hall; Ashley Brooks; Rupal Shah; Marion DeHart; Pam Arnold; Joe Casarez; Kip and Megan Noser; Jessica and Jude Jarvis; Lisa Acocella; John Ogle; Terry Jeanes; Rene Alfaro and Lovey; Bonnie Crossland; Tina Rowe and Jim DiCola; Dian Austin; the Bell family; the Gross family; Greta and Zoe; Tom Stell and Shelly Immel; Bill Spear;
Get a taste of the Heights with The Chamber For The Leader The Greater Heights Area Chamber of Commerce will stage it’s first-ever “Food Truck Festival in the Heights” on June 17, and the event will be held from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at 411 W. 20th St. Chamber members and community residents are invited to enjoy a wide variety of food offerings from these participating food truck vendors: Abu omar halal, Boogie’s Chicago Style BBQ, Bright Relish, Chubbz Grubbz, Cousins Maine Lobster, Dish Curbside Bistro, El Dorado Corn, Happy Baking, Jive Juice Company, KicPops, Latin Kurbside Eatz, Migos Latin Cuisine, Paleteria El Pibe, Pop Up’s by Chef Evelyn, Rita’s Italian Ice and Frozen Custard, SMOOSH Cookies, The Cajun Hot Spot, The Crepe Machine, Thrilla
and Vanilla, Yeti Sunshine and YoYo’s Hot Dog. In addition, there will be lots of shopping with a Haute in the Heights Marketplace with trucks offering a diversity of merchandise from the Shoe Bar, Suburban Girl, Sassy D. Boutique, State Line Designs and Bombshell Bettie. Literally dozens of exhibitor will man booths promoting outstanding products. Entertainment throughout the day will be provided by Tiana Hall, The Houston Jazz Band and Mighty Pretty Mixtape. Tickets in increments of one dollar will be on sale at the event and multiple tickets will be required depending on the price of the food, beverages or merchandise purchased from trucks. Additional information may be obtained on the Chamber Website, www. heightschamber.org.
Jim and Laurel Summers; Jonnie Weido and Jerry Vickery; Bryan Beene and George Johnston; the Bowman-Lister family; the Chang family; Alisa Meadows; Carrie and Lily Hardaker; and Katie McKellar. Congratulations to Troop 21! Leader readers, we will let you know when to expect next year’s bake sale! The Frank Black Middle School Honors Band competed at the University Interscholastic League (UIL) Concert and Sight-Reading Competition on April 28, at Katy High School. The Band competed as a NonVarsity Ensemble, and since the Band competed last year for the first time ever, and had not received a First Division, they remained in this category this year. Last year, Honors Band received a Division 2 for Concert Performance on Stage and a Division 2 in Sight-Reading, which was not too bad considering that was the first time the ensemble had been to UIL and the percussion students were all from Beginning Band! This year, however, the Honors Band received a Division 1 for Concert Performance on Stage and a Division 1 for Sight-Reading, and both scores combined together is called a “Sweepstakes.” This is the first time in the school’s history that Frank Black’s Band received this honor. Remember neighbors, for many, many years - since it opened in the late 1950’s - there was an active band program at Frank Black until the program was dismantled by HISD. Since 2012, with a grant of musical instruments from VH-1 and a neighborhood musical instrument drive, and a whole load of enthusiasm from parents, community and
administrators, the band program has been slowly brought back to life. Richard Smith, Director of Bands, and Laura Martinez, Asst. Band Director, both just finishing their second full year at FBMS, have quickly and effectively created a band program which has already made Frank Black Middle School history! Well done, Panthers! If you are interested in more information about the FBMS Band, please email Mr. Smith at rsmith15@houstonisd.org. Music in schools – it truly makes a difference!

Contributed photo Goodwill Industries of Houston provides various employment opportunities for prospective job seekers.
By Jennifer Layer jennifer@theleadernews.com Most people know and frequent the various Goodwill retail stores around Houston. Many of us have found incredible items at quite the bargain while walking through their isles. If you’re anything like me, however, there are many things about Goodwill Industries of Houston that you knew nothing about. Let’s start from the beginning. Created in 1945, the nonprofit Goodwill Industries of Houston began with the specific goal of providing training and job opportunities for people with disabilities. The retail stores we know and love were created as a means to fund the employment projects they do. Goodwill of Houston has 65 stores and 46 attended donation centers. Other non-profits can even use Goodwill donation drives as a fundraiser for their own causes. “As the community’s needs have changed over time, our programs and services have
evolved and expanded to meet those needs,” said Terri Parris, PR and Media Relations Manager of Goodwill Industries of Houston. Goodwill also helps at-risk youth, veterans, ex-convicts, older workers, and other groups of people who need work and are having trouble finding a job. “Over time, I believe that we have helped employers and future employees themselves understand that people with different abilities, and people who need a second chance make great employees,” said Parris. “We are very excited about the work that we are doing with veterans and their families. Transitioning from military service to civilian life can be challenging, so we are offering a complete package of services to make that easier for them. We are one of the leading providers of services to veterans in the area. Goodwill Houston placed almost 400 veterans in jobs last year. We also housed more than 500 veterans who were homeless, or at risk of homelessness.”
Goodwill finds a way to make the absolute most of every opportunity they have to help the community and the world. For example, Goodwill has a recycling program where they are able to recycle most of the materials that they are unable to sell in their stores, helping keep our waste levels headed to landfills low. Although Goodwill does a lot of good in many aspects, their main focus is of course their career services. “In the time that I have been at Goodwill Houston, I have come to understand that the real value of work cannot be measured by a paycheck alone,” said Parris. “Work is also about dignity, purpose, and for many of our clients— independence. It’s truly an honor to work in an organization that helps people change their lives through the power of work. “ If you are interested in supporting our Leader area Goodwill, please call 713-699-6305.
Heights Hospital now under new ownership By Landan Kuhlmann landan@theleadernews.com For months on end, speculation has floated about the future of the Heights Hospital property, and some details – and new suitor – have finally emerged. AMD Global and Medical Center Developments CEO Dr. Dharmesh Patel said his company purchased the 3.94acre facility encompassing more than 192,000 square feet in the Heights back in March with a vision towards renovation and creating another healthcare jewel within the community. “For the past few years, the facility, as a whole, hasn’t fully reflected the individuality and spirit that is the Heights” he
said. “St. Joseph’s is currently operating there right now and they’re doing an absolutely phenomenal job, so what we decided to do, with their help, was this – we saw there was a need to purchase this landmark and revitalize it. We want it to be a centerpiece in the Heights and we think it’s going to benefit and support the community immensely.” Though he did not wish to divulge many details for the time being, Patel said AMD is currently in the final stages of contract negotiations with several potential tenants as of press time. For now, while it may not be a full-service hospital, Patel noted AMD does have services being run as of press time, and believes exciting things
Great Gifts For Dads
are in store for the spot. AMD is looking to add Labor & Delivery with NICU services, including Pediatrician offices, a Wound Care Center as well as a center for Orthopedics. The Orthopedics Center will include spine, general ortho and hand surgery. They have reached out to multiple IPA and primary practice groups to have offices within the hospital to create a true healthcare destination. “I believe we can truly create something of true significance here. I think it can help drive the healthcare in this community as it once did in the past – and we are thrilled to be a part of it,” he said.

Development of Eastern Glades is now underway By Pat Spillman For The Leader Major changes are happening on the east side of Memorial Park with development of the Eastern Glades, the first of several large infrastructure and restoration projects envisioned by the 2015 Memorial Park Master Plan. Memorial Park Conservancy, Houston Parks and Recreation Department and The Uptown Tax Increment Reinvestment Zone are working together to fund, develop and implement this inaugural project. The Eastern Glades encompasses the 110-acre area east of the golf course, north of Memorial Drive and west of the Crestwood subdivision. It has remained undeveloped and relatively inaccessible for decades with no improved trails, poor drainage and a forest in declining health due to general lack of management. The Master Plan envisions a two-phase project to transform the area with new infrastructure and public amenities, greater public access and an ecologically restored urban forest. The infrastructure phase started this spring with construction of a new segment of East Memorial Loop Drive to

the east of the existing road, and a new entrance on Memorial Drive. Crews have cleared and graded the new roadway from Memorial Drive to near Arnot Street. Construction of the road and new parking areas to accommodate 150 parking spaces will begin this summer. Green infrastructure – drainage swales planted with native grasses, extensive tree plantings along the roadway and in the parking areas, and native landscaping - will complement and soften the project.
The Seymour Lieberman Trail is being extended east allowing access from the new parking areas. The trail will parallel the new road then turn west to reconnect with the current trail near Memorial Drive. The new alignment will lengthen the trail to three miles maintaining its interior configuration with no street crossings. And, park users can take heart - the City is promising to keep both the trail and East Memorial Loop Drive open throughout construction. Installation of critical
drainage infrastructure in the project area was completed in May, and much needed restroom facilities are slated for installation later this year. All phase one infrastructure and improvements are expected to be completed by next spring at an estimated cost of $9.5 million. Once the hard infrastructure is in place, the second development phase will start with removal of the old East Memorial Loop Drive. This will free up previously unused acreage for reestablishing a
more contiguous forest, completing new trails, and developing the Master Plan forest glades. The large central Eastern Glade will be a nine-acre oval of grass shaded by existing large pines and canopy trees ringed by a wide, hardsurfaced esplanade for walking. Park goers will be able to access the Eastern Glade from the new parking areas and by footpaths from new park entrance points. The Master Plan envisions the Eastern Glade as a quiet, shady space situated within the project’s larger ecological setting of restored savanna and native pine/hardwood forest. “The glades are intended for passive recreational uses like picnicking, reading and leisurely walking, which this part of Memorial Park currently does not provide,” says Randy Odinet, the Memorial Park Conservancy’s Project Manager. Phase two calls for completion of a five-acre pond and constructed wetlands intended to manage storm water and provide water for park irrigation while also creating new habitat and an accessible water amenity unique to the park. A portion of the pond was excavated this spring for installation of new drainage
infrastructure. Other public amenities planned for phase two include picnic pavilions, boardwalk trails at the lake and additional restrooms. The long-term work of restoring and enhancing the Eastern Glades forest will be overseen by the Memorial Park Conservancy, which assumed management responsibility for the park’s 1,100 acres of green space in 2016. Restoration work started last year with Conservancy staff and volunteers planting over a thousand native trees along the park’s eastern boundary. Chinese Tallow, privet and other crowding invasives are being systematically removed to reestablish a healthier and more diverse forest. Over the next several years, new trees and grass plantings will be incorporated into the glades and throughout the surrounding forest to enhance biodiversity, create new habitat, and improve visual amenities. “Our goal over time is to reestablish and manage a more diverse and resilient urban forest,” says Odinet. Completion of the Eastern Glades is expected to take 3-4 years, depending on availability of funding.
Houston pension reform passes final stage of legislation For The Leader The Texas Senate and the Texas House of Representatives approved the conference report for Senate Bill 2190, the Houston Pension Solution, with the Senate voting 25-5 Tuesday, May 23 and the House voting 103-43 Wednesday, May 24, and the bill was recently signed into law by Governor Greg Abbot on May 1. “Today is a historic day because we have done what many said was impossible,” said Mayor Sylvester Turner May 24. “Today’s significance is not marked merely by what we have accomplished, but by
what we can achieve now that we have lifted a significant barrier to progress in our city.” “Houstonians have done what we always do when push comes to shove. We came together and put aside our differences to lift up our city and build a brighter future for our children,” said the mayor. Passing pension reform has been Mayor Turner’s primary focus since taking office in January 2017. Houston’s large unfunded liability and escalating costs had been cited by credit rating agencies as a significant negative factor in the City’s fiscal outlook. “If we did not tackle our pension issues head on, they
would continue to serve as a ceiling for everything we seek to accomplish,” said the Mayor. “Every dollar we have saved thanks to these reforms represents another opportunity: Another resource we can use to lift up Houston families. Another dollar we can use on affordable housing, public safety, quality of life and every element we need to make our communities complete.” The Houston Pension Solution, which experts have called a “national model,” will immediately reduce the City’s $8.2 billion unfunded liability through future benefit reductions. Under the plan, which utilizes a more realistic 7 per-
cent rate of return on investments, the City will be required to meet its annual contribution until the unfunded liability is fully paid off in 30 years. An innovative cost corridor concept controls costs for the City. The corridor serves a risk sharing mechanism - if investments perform too far below established levels, the pension boards will cut benefits or increase employee contributions to bring costs in line. Legislative approval was necessary because control of the pension systems is housed in state statute. The bill passed the Texas Senate 25-5 and the Texas House 115-29, with bipartisan support in both
chambers. It then passed through conference committee, where the two chambers reconciled differences in the bill. Tuesday’s and Wednesday’s votes approved those changes and were the final step in the Legislature. It was supported by two of the three pension systems, labor organizations representing city employees and the Greater Houston Partnership, along with more than 40 CEOs and local business leaders who signed a letter of support. “I’d like to thank Chairman Dan Flynn, Chairwoman Joan Huffman, Speaker Joe Straus, Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick and all other members of the Legis-
lature who helped Houston move this bill forward,” the Mayor said. “The Houston Pension Solution is an example of what we can accomplish when all parties join hands to resolve the important issues that face this City. It’s an approach we should continue to take on every issue we face.” “What passed today does not solve our fiscal problems. We will still have to close a significant budget gap this year, and we project lean times in the next few years,” Mayor Turner continued. “However, passage of this bill lifts a tremendous burden on the City’s ability to fully serve all its residents.”

Where Your Life Meets Your Finances.
Not all wealth management institutions are created equal, and one local branch is striving to provide Leader area residents with a unique brand of service as not only consultants, but friends and neighbors. Located in Suite 1030 at 1225 N. Loop West, United Capital of Houston advisors Sandy White and Mike Ryan bring a wealth of financial knowledge and neighborhood connections, put an emphasis on more than just managing the money and strive for the relationship to go beyond client-advisor. At United Capital, White and Ryan provide a unique monetary management plan close to home for many, from financial planning to planning for retirement. MR: We see our job as being able to help people and try to better their lives. I worked in the corporate
world for many years, and the reason I left was because I wanted to be able to do this sort of thing and help people—that’s when I got into this as opposed to working for these conglomerates. SW: With most planners, it’s like ‘here’s your plan, you’re going from here straight to retirement.’ But, in reality, things happen that you don’t plan on. Most of the time the success barometer for a planner is the rate of return. But a rate of return doesn’t tell if you’re accomplishing your goals, and if you’re not, it doesn’t matter. We found out that it’s better measuring how we’re doing relative to what matters to you. MR: We make money doing it, but the biggest motivation is helping people. We’re interested in how you live your life and the
Mind®” which can range from Commitment (spending on others), Fear (not living for today) and Happiness (living for today). Once White and Ryan sit down face-to-face and figure out the source of someone’s Money Mind®, then the planning can begin for how to best take care of the client. SW: It’s about having a goal, and how you work through the process to accomplish that goal. So many people think they can’t do what they want to do. It’s amazing when you think ‘I’m really not getting anything done,’ and then you go back and look at your notes and that’s what we’re able to do. United Capital takes information gathered from their one-on-one meetings and fashions it into an easy-tofollow Guidebook that lays out a person’s entire plan
Sandy White and Mike Ryan purpose of the money. We make sure we understand what those reasons are. Ryan, White and their staff address each client one-onone, staying away from a ‘cookie cutter, one-size-fitsall ‘solution. SW: Most advisors who are investing money for people are just investing the money. They don’t tell you how much you can spend. They just tell you the rate of return. That doesn’t tell you
what you get to spend. MR: That’s not how it is, which is why I didn’t want to go that way. I always wanted to be with an independent company where you can spend time with people. All about the planning SW: Wealth management and retirement planning come down to just that— planning. Essentially, figuring out a plan starts with figuring out one’s “Money
— complete with notes as well as steps that have been taken to that point from every meeting — in efforts to help ease people’s fears to the best of their abilities. SW: It’s really just putting it into steps and helping anyone do whatever it is they want to do. Sometimes things happen the way we want, sometimes they don’t. But I’ve seen a lot of people accomplish a lot of things over the years. MR: We’re based in the neighborhood, we have the attitude of service, and that’s what we’re about. Our clients’ goal is to live the kind of a life they would wish to live in a way that makes them happy and fulfilled. That’s the last stretch of life, and I want it to be meaningful, so it’s about how we can make that happen.
