Two north Houston business groups are forming a partnership whose goal will be to help untangle the bureaucratic knots slowing progress along North Shepherd Drive. A joint task force is being formed including members of North Shepherd Community Alliance and the Greater Heights Area Chamber of Commerce. Meetings could begin as early as the first week in June, in hopes of organizing an August presentation or tour for elected
officials. “One of the things that’s hard about Shepherd is that it’s all broken up into different jurisdictions,” said Kathryn Van der Pol, a Shepherd business owner, during a recent NSCA meeting. “It’s taking a long time to get chronic crime areas resolved. But we have to do something. We have momentum, so we need to make the most of this opportunity.” Also known as Spur 261 since 1954, North Shepherd Drive is maintained jointly by Texas Department of See Shepherd P. 2A

other nationally-syndicated shows such as Judge Alex (2004-2012) and Judge Faith (since 2014) and arranged the music for Divorce Court (2008-2012). He has also done commercials for Methodist Hospital, Shell Oil, Applebee’s, Joe’s Crab Shack, and local car dealerships – all the while scoring feature films. Szabo’s numerous IMDB score credits include films Dancing in Twilight (2005), The Preacher’s Daughter (2013), Sanitatum (2017), The Competition (2018), a new local series entitled “5th Ward” – which looks at life in Houston’s own Fifth Ward – and many others in between. “First it was every two years, then every year and a half. It’s one of those things where you just keep your head down and keep working – hopefully nobody says ‘who are you?!’ he said with a laugh.

The musical impulse struck Scott Szabo from childhood – and it’s now taken him further than he could have ever imagined. Szabo -- an Oak Forest resident -- has now been in the music and film industry for nearly three decades, and has composed scores for national shows for 17 years. His work ranges from television to movies, commercials, and music, and his accomplished career includes accolades such as Best Music Award from the Houston Comedy Film Festival, a 2009 Telly Award and a gold medal at the 2005 Park City Film Music Festival for his scores and arrangements. A long-time Houstonian born in Austin, Szabo may lay in the background for his work – but he is a bona fide star who currently makes his home in our local neighborhood, and took time in between projects to speak with The Leader about his journey. Early beginnings, twist of fate Growing up in Houston, Szabo began playing piano at 11, playing in bands at 15, was accepted into Houston’s prestigious High School for Visual and Performing Arts at 16, and tried to make a career of playing original band music through his 20s and 30’s. And in the midst of that journey, everything changed. In 1989, Szabo played an

original work for a friend – a TV producer – for kicks. Several months later, that friend circled back while doing a global piece for Dow Chemical marketing, inquiring for its use – and Szabo needed no extra motivation. “I had no idea what I was going to do with [that song]. I didn’t know I could get paid for writing songs like this,” he remembered, laughing. “That’s really how it all started.”

had called up Fox executives – and was, much to his surprise, fast-tracked for the project. “Normally you get vetted for stuff like that, but they just passed me on up the chain,” he remembered with a chuckle. And since that day, the Oak Forest resident hasn’t stopped climbing, cultivating a relationship with 20th Television (Fox’s daytime division). He has composed scores for some of their

Everything fell in line after that. Following the scoring of a few local shows and some feature films in the 90s, Szabo wound up writing music for Enron’s global marketing for four years before catching one of his first big breaks. Szabo’s first national score was nationally-syndicated Texas Justice, which ran 2001-2004 and was initially based in Houston. With just the prior few local scores to his name, Szabo
Preparing for bumps For every production on the air, however, there has been a multitude which never make it past the pilot or planning stage, or doesn’t pass muster with the audience – rendering nothing to show for countless hours of back-breaking work. It was lesson a Szabo learned immediately. “People in the creative world are honest about whether it’s up to par. If you write something they want, when they want it, they’re likely to work with you,”
Two people were found dead inside a northwest Houston apartment last Friday in an apparent murder-suicide, with a baby left behind at the scene. Around 8:40 a.m., police say a neighbor called 9-1-1 reporting possible gunshots at an apartment complex in the 7200 block of T.C. Jester Boulevard; and between then and when officers arrived on
scene, there was at least one additional gunshot. Houston police say the officer who arrived on scene first made his way inside, finding a dead woman outside on the patio of the apartment. Following an initial backup, authorities say they later found a man dead inside the apartment with what appeared to be a selfinflicted gunshot wound. HPD later found a baby believed to be around six months old inside
the apartment, and believe the deceased man and woman found at the scene to been the child’s parents, though their identities had not been officially released prior to press time. According to HPD, the department has previously responded to the residence multiple times for alleged domestic violence incidents. Authorities say the boy was medically cleared by Houston fire fighters and released to his relatives.
