Allegiance Bancshares, Inc., the holding company of Allegiance Bank, announced on Monday, April 30, the signing of a definitive merger agreement with Post Oak Bancshares, Inc., the holding company of Post Oak Bank, N.A., whereby Post Oak will be merged with and into Allegiance. Post Oak Bank operates 13 banking locations in Houston and Beaumont. Don Pablitos open where Fiesta Tacos closed By Zarah Parker zarah@theleadernews.com For Don Pablitos, the sauce may be boss but this boss has a new, um “office.” After Fiesta Tacos closed in December, leaving loyal customers in the dark, th chile sauce company settled into the vacant spot as its first brick and mortar. Don Pablitos got its start in the late eighties, early nineties and still competes yearly in Austin at the biggest hot sauce festival in the state. “Almost every other year we’re in the top five or have an honorable mention,” said Trey Perez, the part owner, executive chef, general manager of Don Pablitos. The company has been doing festivals since its inception and was once listed as one of the top things to try in Houston. From there the company spring boarded into food starting out with taco stands, but the location at 4620 West 34th Street is the first time roots were put down. “The opportunity came up [to lease the property], I’ve heard stories about Fiesta Tacos and I think they’ve set the bar high because people have been coming here a long time and they’ll come in and tell me stories,” said Perez. Perez mentioned that although many customers have told him about Fiesta Tacos, he’s not sure what happened to make them close the doors. And after hearing so many different stories about what happened to Fiesta Ta-

cos, he thought the best thing to do was to have the place blessed. He had a priest from St. Jerome’s do the blessing, which many customers appreciated. As a new restaurant on the block, Perez is thankful for the encouragement from the returning customers. Many people from other local businesses have become regulars as well. The owners of Don Pablitos acquired the lease in January and their target open date was somewhere in the middle of February. That was before they realized how much work they had ahead of them. “When we got started in here there was no staff, so we came in and we were like we’ve got to fix this place up and so we spent the first two months doing repairs,” said Perez, “The heavy rains from Hurricane Harvey had

destroyed the roof, we pretty much had to start all over there. We would fix a roof leak and another would pop up.” To gain employees Perez put signs in the windows indicating they were hiring. Little by little much of the staff that worked at Fiesta Tacos came back, with 60 percent on staff from the previous occupant. Don Pablitos is still getting a few things ready, like a sign to indicate that its open. “People don’t know we’re here yet, even yesterday we had people drive up and say, ‘I didn’t know y’all were open, I just saw the cars’,” said Perez. Perez doesn’t mind the confusion and jokes it off,

“Word is getting out that we’re here, they just think we’re Fiesta Tacos. No, we got a new floor man! We don’t have a new sign, but we got a new floor!” As for the food they bring in special select cuts of meat that they use for their popular fajita and barbacoa tacos along with fresh fruits to cook and render for the fillings of the empanadas. The empanadas are all hand made fresh every morning with a recipe that gives the bread a flakier and pie-like crust, opposed to typical Mexican empanadas which are solid breads. “[Empanadas are] starting to take off, customers come in buying half a dozen all the time. They come in pineapple, apple, strawberry,” said Perez. Don Pablitos tamales are also growing in popularity. They are hand made fresh every morning as well. They See Don Pablitos P. 2B

SING moving to Lowell Street Market

There has been a change in plans for Singaporean inspired eatery SING, which was planning to open this spring at Ella Oaks, Revive’s 34th and Ella development. SING is now planning to open at Lowell Street Market at 718 West 18th Street. It will occupy the space previously spoken for by Seaside Poke. SING’s Cuc Lam and business partner Jerry Lasco wanted a small footprint for their casual eatery after looking at various spaces throughout the city. The Lowell Street location will be about the same square footage as Ella Oaks and

Lam says she hopes to attract some of the same customers. The reason for the move was some unforeseen city permitting restrictions on the patio they wanted to have on 34th. Lam and Revive parted amicably. Lam said they will keep permitted plans that Seaside had gotten approved and will have a small patio, with additional seating available in the development’s community area. There have been no changes to the planned menu, other than the fact that they will now have craft beer available in cans because there was no way to have the variety they wanted otherwise. “Hopefully we can find the same energy,” said Lam. “[The new space] is exactly what we wanted.”

Ella Oaks Update

With the addition of Branché Boutique to Ella Oaks, which is what Revive has branded their development at 34th and Ella, the final pieces are coming together for phase one of the development. Monica Danna at Revive says that they expect to close on the final two tenants, who

will occupy the remaining 2,750 square foot on the east building endcap, in the next few weeks. A promotional flyer is online at Revive’s website for phase two, which offers 6,500 square feet close to Ella Boulevard. Danna said they have increasing interest from medical uses, due to the proximity to the Memorial Hermann Heights Hospital. “The one-story building will have high ceilings, allowing lots of natural light and a potential mezzanine for medical offices, a unique offering in the neighborhood.” she said. There is another 3,400 square feet building even closer to Ella which was recently vacated by Heights Cleaners. “It’s the morning side of the street and with over 50,000 cars a day on Ella Boulevard, so a morning use business would be a good fit,” said Danna. Crowned the “hood ornament” by Bryan Danna, the former tire center will be a coffee shop and Monica Danna said they are sav-

Don Pablitos from P. 1B use tried and true recipes that have customers buying them by the dozen. Perez is already familiar with the area and with the neighborhood in a transition because of the new houses being built, the restaurant’s first priority is staying family friendly. For the families with young kids they offer kid friendly menu options and always

make sure to stock Tru Moo Chocolate Milk, which sells out by 10 a.m. on weekends. “We’re in talks about opening up the other side. There’s a drive-thru area that never opened, so there’s a section of the restaurant that never got built or developed. But there are three walk-up windows on it so we’re in the process of designing a flat outdoor patio,” said Perez, “This

place has been a big staple for this location, for this area for a long long time, so we’re just hoping to keep that up or just reach that bar.” Don Pablitos celebrated its grand opening on March 10 and is now open Tuesday through Friday from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m., and on Sunday from 7:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The high school baseball playoffs get going this week in both the public and private school ranks and several Heights-area schools are hoping to be playing for a long time in May. St. Thomas, St. Pius X, Houston Heights and Waltrip have all wrapped up excellent regular seasons and now each knows every time they take the field, if they win, they get to keep playing.

“The promise of an experience unlike any other.”

St. Thomas The Eagles began defense of their 2017 TAPPS Division I state championship and their quest for the program’s 24th state crown overall with a best-of-three home series this week against Addison Trinity Christian, the fourth place team out of District 1-6A. While most teams wrapped up their regular season games last week to get ready for the postseason’s start this week, the Eagles played their last regular season game Monday night against Second Baptist. Just like St. Thomas, Second Baptist has TAPPS state title aspirations just like St. Thomas and both teams wanted to get in one final real competitive game before they began their postseason journeys. With District 3-6A pretty strong this spring from top to bottom, the Eagles went 7-5 in district, but finished league play with three wins in their final four games, including a 7-2 win over Tomball Concordia Lutheran in the last league encounter. St. Thomas and Trinity Christian played a doubleheader Wednesday on the Eagles’ diamond with a Game Three, if needed, on Thursday morning and the winner of the series moving to the Regional round of the playoffs. The winner of the St. Thomas-Trinity Christian series will face the winner of the Prestonwood Plano Christian-San Antonian Prep matchup next week in the regional round. Both teams had nearly identical records on the season with St. Pius X at 21-11 and Trinity Christian at 21-10.

officially were third in District 18-6A, will face top 20 state-ranked Cy Ranch 7:30 p.m. Friday, May 4 at Delmar Stadium in a one-game, winner-take-all series in which the winning team advances to the second round next week and the losing team is eliminated. The Ranch finished the season as the 18th ranked 6A team in the state in the latest Texas Association of Baseball Coaches (TABC) poll. The Ranch brings a 23-6-2 record into the contest, but they completed District 17-6A action last Friday night with a 9-2 loss to Langham Creek. The Heights has completed its best regular season ever as a 6A program and will now no doubt try and ride the arm of senior pitchers Chris Macias as far as they can in the postseason. Macias, who has eight wins, defeated Lamar twice this season for the Heights’ first-ever wins over the twotime district champion coming into this season . Macias has pitched in most of the team’s biggest games this year. He has also proved durable, throwing seven innings each time each took on the Texans. Cy Ranch was officially second in District 16-5A and they boost two good starting pitchers with senior Ty Madden sporting a 7-1 record and a 0.58 Earned Run and junior J.J. Goss finishing with a 6-1 record and a 1.42 ERA. Both are also strikeout pitchers with Madden recording 71 in 48 innings while Goss has 57 in 41 innings pitched. Since it is a one-game deal, if the Bulldogs get their bats going, they are likely to see both of them.

Houston Heights The old adage in sports is “you play the games one at a time.” For the Bulldogs, that’s also how they’re hoping to progress in the Region III-6A playoffs. The Bulldogs, who

Art Valet: Artists open stores in the Heights Mitch Cohen Art Columnist

The outdoor art market business is transient in nature for the most part. I always looked at my show in the Heights as an incubator of sorts, helping artists get to “their” next level. The one rarity is moving to a brick and mortar business, the time and financial commitment the biggest deterrent. Meet two very different artists that took that leap, Erica DelGardo, a jewelry designer and Jessica Carlos, who crochets dolls. They have a few things in common I find interesting. They opened shop in the Heights after attending First Saturday Arts Market for several years, DelGardo on 19th Street and Carlos on Yale at 18th. What’s the best and worst? “I love helping my customers translate their ideas into a real-life piece of jewelry. When someone comes in and describes what they want – engagement rings, custom bracelets, necklaces – and then I get to see their expression when they pick it up after I’ve made it…that’s the best.” “The other best thing? My daughter Bella has literally grown up in my store,” DelGardo said. “My customers saw her as a newborn, and now they see her helping me in the shop – especially during 19th Street events. I love that I get to share this part of my life with her – the ups and downs of running a business, the importance of taking care of your customers, and the joy of being the best jeweler that I can be.” The worst? “When you own your own shop, you’re always on the clock!” DelGardo said. How about some advice for future store owners? “Follow your passion – whatever got you to this stage where you are thinking about opening your own store – make sure you hold on to that. I had been crocheting off and on for quite some time before I learned the art of amigurumi (crochet doll making),” Carlos said. “I had a ton of different design ideas that I couldn’t wait to try. I would post pictures of my creations online to raise funds for breast cancer research. I started selling at outdoor markets in October 2011 and was blown away by all the support from the fellow artists and patrons.” Why did you open a store? “It was just a natural progression for me. It had always been a faraway goal of mine to have a very small part of the universe to showcase my wares,” Carlos said. “After six years of creating, promoting, setting up, selling, tearing down, and doing it all over again once or twice a month, it was finally time to set my roots in somewhere.” What’s the best and worst? “When people come in not knowing what to ex-
