Car show for charity starts new tradition at Hartz Krispy Chicken received from well-known actors Chris Hemsworth, Samuel L. By Betsy Denson betsy@theleadernews.com Naro Mak, the owner of Hartz Krispy Chicken on Pinemont Drive, had been talking to some people in the neighborhood about hosting a car show at his restaurant. He was hesitant at first, because nearby MytiBurger does popular Myti Cruise events with classic cars. But once Mak settled on a broader scope of vehicles – and a charitable cause – the event took shape as “Chicken and Cars.” Muscle cars, classic cars, modern cars, exotics and Japanese cars were all on display April 25 at Hartz for what Mak plans to make a monthly event benefiting those in need. A portion of the proceeds from last week’s show went to a young boy fighting cancer. “For most, some of these cars could only be seen in the movies,” Mak said. “At Chicken and Cars, you can see them up close and talk to their owners and mechanics.” Some highlights included a Lamborghini, a Nissan 370Z and a Chevrolet Super Sport. Mak networked with local car clubs, including Isac Ramos from Exalted Royalty and Vanessa Flores from Clutch City Cartels, to get 26 show cars, and then others in the neighborhood showed up with their own for a total of 40 cars. Mak said more than 200 people attended the event. Some of the proceeds from food sales, totaling $350, went to the family of Kaleo Collier, a 3-year-old Houston boy fighting cancer. Business briefs: New restaurant set to occupy old Golden Café spot Brandon Piper of Piper Development confirmed Monday that the company is leasing the building at 1430 W. 19th St. from Hamid R. Foroudi, who has owned the building for almost 18 years and previously leased it to the proprietor of the former Golden Café. Piper said a new restaurant at that location will be similar to the former Grafittis at Union St., which his family owned at 2003 Union St. and closed in May 2017. The restaurant featured graffiti art on the walls and a menu of flame-grilled burgers, wings and steaks. Piper said it is uncertain whether the upcoming restaurant on 19th will keep the Grafittis name but said it will be a full-service bar and restaurant that will be both kidand pet-friendly. He said there is interior work being done in preparation for a summer opening. “It will be a great neighborhood spot,” Piper said. The Houston Architecture Information Forum helped provide information for this story.

Former Greensheet space sold for storage The Houston Chronicle reported that Houston-based GreenSpace Holdings purchased the former office space of classified publication Greensheet at 1690 North Loop West. Half of the 6.2acre property on the outskirts of the Heights, north of the Houston Farmers Market, was put back on the market for resale by GreenSpace because it

says it did not need all of the space for its plans to develop a three-story, self-storage facility built from shipping containers. The Harris County Appraisal District valued the property, formerly owned by Kathy Douglass and Helen Gordon Interests, at $6.7 million. MVR Publishing, a subsidiary of McElvy Media Group, which owns The Leader, purchased the Greensheet in September 2018. The Houston office is now housed at 2020 North Loop West, Suite 220.
