The best cup of joe in the ‘hood By Ozzie C. Davis For The Leader
My name is Ozzie C. Davis. Well, no - it’s not. It’s actually my pen name. I’ve always wanted a pen name, so I’ve conceived Ozzie. Ozzie probably exists due to anonymity in today’s age of the internet. And I am after all, the eldest of millennials ruling over this modern digital kingdom. Therefore, it is simply culturally appropriate that Mr. O.C. Davis exists. My family (there are a couple other C. Davis’) and I have lived in Oak Forest since 2012. I dub the year 2012, the “Year of the Estate Sale”. I have never seen anything like it before or since. It was a good time to purchase used furniture and a moderate to bad time to be an original home owner. But that’s enough about me. You don’t read this revered, only local newspaper covering the Heights and Northwest Houston area, to hear about my history. Let’s get down to the brass tacks as they say wherever they say it. The goal of this project is to stimulate, entertain and inform on the topics that I care about: coffee. Are you an “office from home” employee, stay at home mother, stay at home father, night shift nurse, retiree, qualified oilfield worker seeking new opportunities, or University of Houston commuter student? Or perhaps you are just a regular Joe and are jones’ing for coffee and are around The Leader circulation area. Look no further to help you make the best decision when looking to patronize a coffee shop. If you want to be like me, Ozzie C. Davis, go to a local spot. If you are wondering where to go, fear not. I have visited and summarized all of them here.

Grindhouse 5403 N. Shepherd Dr. Located on Shepherd near Pinemont Serving Katz’s coffee O.C.D’s recommendation: Cinnamon Coffee and Glazed Donut
The breakdown: A flash to the good ole days of coffee shops. You remember, the one that grandpa would take you to after your parents told him not to feed you donuts as a child. They also bake donuts and have a full menu of delectables. This location has a small sitting area and provides Wi-Fi. If you Photo by Christina Martinez plan to work or study in there, The Trio panini from bring your headphones so you GrindHouse’s lunch menu. can ignore the conversations you can’t help but to overhear while you’re in there. Also, to our nefarious readers, we advise selecting an alternate local favorite as this one is HPD’s. SlowPokes 1203 W. 34th St. Suite D near on Alba and 34th Serving Geva Coffee Beans O.C.D’s recommendation: Plain Latte and Couch Potato Cookie
The breakdown: Have your kids ever bothered you to ride a throwback coin operated copper turtle where they can gently rock back and forth for about a minute? Well, bring your grandfather’s coin purse and children and head over the GOOF’s newest coffee spot. The décor of the establishment is hard to describe with its fancy picnic benches and chicken wirecubby hole separated booths. My favorite decoration piece is the neon bar sign greeting patrons stating, “I’m a slowpoke.” Lastly, I would be doing a disservice not mentioning the kid friendly sideyard where the whole family can go to distract the children while parents drink their fill of local coffee, wines and beers. Come all ye sloths, slugs and turtles.

Boomtown 242 W. 19th St.in “downtown” Heights Serving Boomtown Roasters coffee O.C.D’s recommendation: The Johnny Cash
The breakdown: Get your favorite pair of skinny jeans and beanie and get ready to wait in line. These guys do make some great coffee and there is a line for a reason. One feature that some will enjoy and others will hate is the cigar smoke that seeps through the walls. My personal opinion is that it is a wonderful aromatic experience to have coffee and cigar smells combined. It is a strong to very strong social atmosphere for those who are 20-38 years old. They also provide WiFi with a password that is openly anti Decaf coffee. A 2nd Cup 1111 E. 11th St. near Yale and 11th in Heights Serving Boomtown Roasters coffee O.C.D’s recommendation: Flat White
The breakdown: A coffee shop with the purpose to raise awareness about human and sex trafficking in our city. How can anyone hate on that? The seating area has plenty of space and is very comfortable. It has a good social atmosphere and is my personal favorite to work from. The breakfast tacos are creative and highly recommended. A small but underrated feature of this place is a multi-toilet restroom. You know you hate bathroom lines too. The men’s even has a shower that you could use. I dare you.

Community and comfort offered at local coffee shops Betsy Denson betsy@theleadernews.com For Kevin Blasini, who opened EQ Heights on Heights Boulevard two years ago, the second part of his shop’s name - “Coffee and Social House” - are not just words. “I wanted to focus on fostering relationships and have a place that truly was a community spot,” says Blasini. “I used to do a lot of travel and saw how coffee shops can bring young people together.” While he knows that people come to EQ to get work done on their computers, there’s also significant space dedicated to an atmosphere more like a living room with couches and chairs - a “comfortable place where people feel welcome.” Blasini must know what he’s doing because on a recent Tuesday mid-morning there was a bustling crowd of both workers and talkers. EQ was formerly the home of both Waldo’s and Boulevard Coffee. Blasini said he made significant changes inside with the colors and décor, and added sliding pocket doors at two separate spots in the room so the spaces can be sectioned off for events. “We host small meetings, and lectures,” said Blasini. The idea of community and personal narrative is a good fit with the artisanal nature of coffee, says Blasini, and he likes sharing with people the story of the farmers. He also says the theme fits with the musicians they host Thursday through Saturday nights. “They are personally invested in their craft too,” said Blasini, who noted that the groups they bring in don’t have highly amplified music.” “The whole thing is about an intimate space,” he said. “Coffee and tea are what get us started.” Another coffee shop who does a lot more than coffee is Cafeza on Houston Avenue in the First Ward. “Our mission is coffee, cuisine, culture and community,” said Ryan Hazen, who owns Cafeza with wife Keisha. Like EQ Heights, Cafeza also serves beer and wine, but they also offer cocktails. Cafeza focuses community efforts on the First Ward by hosting the First Ward civic club’s events, showing and selling art from First Ward artists, and partnering with a Girl Scout troop at nearby Crockett Elementary. “We hosted them for a Girl Scout cookie sale and did a Thin Mint Latte to go along with it,” said Hazen. “There was a huge turnout. They sold 100 boxes in two hours.” Music is a big part of bringing people together too. Fridays and Saturdays they

host local musicians who feature original music. Monday night is the city’s only Latin Jazz Band where people can show up to play. There’s a piano with built in microphones under a portrait by Wiley Robertson at which Hazen says people will start playing on any random day. And when they do, Cafeza turns down the playlist and rolls with it. There’s also a Poetry Night hosted by Writer’s Block every other Tuesday. Hazen says the inside was completely remodeled when they purchased it. There’s a long bar and a long communal bench that was influenced by their time in Barcelona and Paris. “There’s less of a requirement for personal space there,” said Hazen. “It’s interesting when people sit shoulder to shoulder and engage with each other.” He says that they’ve had people who live in the same townhome community meet this way. “They hadn’t met before, even though they lived in the same place,” he said. Another local shop, Boomtown on 19th, recently undertook a renovation to meet both the aesthetic and coffee needs of its customers. “We wanted something simple and clean that created a brighter, more vibrant atmosphere within the space,” said An-
drew Loreman, chief Design and creative officer for Boomtown. “We know there are plenty of people who want nothing but a quiet space to sip on their coffee, but we want our product to energize, motivate, and inspire our customers. The feel of the old shop was cozy and had a certain charm, but we never felt that the nature of the space matched the quality of our coffee. We wanted to give the Heights neighborhood a truly great coffee experience and felt that we needed to upgrade the space to be able to deliver it.” Tangible changes include brightening up the space, upgrading the surfaces throughout, increasing the number of seats on the floor and bringing back couches. “The largest part of our remodel, however, focused on creating a more robust and memorable coffee offering with the addition of the Modbar pourover and espresso heads behind the bar,” said Loreman. “With this equipment, we plan to feature the highest quality coffee we roast and offer a catered, comprehensive coffee tasting experience.” Loreman said this is their first remodel since they took over the shop from a previous owner five years ago. “It was long overdue and finally feels like home to us,” he said.
A look into the evolving cup of coffee, craft By Kim Hogstorm For The Leader
There was a time when Americans were satisfied with freeze-dried coffee crystals stirred into a cup of hot water for their dose of morning joe. Fortunately, those dark days of uncivilized caffeine consumption are over. Today, a cup of coffee - or variations on the same - has become something of an art form. The passionate people who produce these hand-crafted delights are considered artists among a growing number of consumers. A “barista” is now the new “Chef de Caffeine.” Statistics reveal there have been significant shifts in America’s coffee consumption, largely driven by millennials. The National Coffee Association released its 2016 report illustrating that younger Americans have changed the dynamic over the last eight years. Between 2008 and 2016, the NCA reports that consumption of specialty coffee beverages sky-rocketed, from 13 percent to 36 percent among 18 to 24year-olds, and from 19 percent to 41 percent for those age 25 to 39. Daily doses of espresso-based beverages tripled in the same time frame. And, for the first time in the NCA’s 67-year history, the consumption of coffee brewed in homes has dropped. We are getting our caffeine fix in businesses instead. There are a number of dining spots in Houston in which to indulge a desire for java. One of the most creative is Revival Market at 550 Heights Blvd. Not only does

this unusual cafe offer locally sourced food, its specialty coffee selections are as original as those anywhere. The baristas here are a proud lot. They can create cappuccinos, lattes, and espressos alongside the best in Houston. The lead barista at the market, Sean Nees, is committed to his craft and sometimes competes in steam-offs as an active member of the Houston Barista Society. “We’ve been very fortunate,” said Layne Cruz, General Manager of Revival Market. “Most of our baristas come to the US with experience and that’s good, because it’s not easy. It takes a lot of practice.” Cruz explained that steaming milk is the most complicated part. The steaming wand controls the milk-frothing and, as the operator, baristas must find the correct balance of time and placement of the wand to arrive at the perfect milk texture.
There is also the possibility of scorching, actually burning the milk, and ruining its flavor. “There is a small window of time and temperature to get the frothing right. A part is of the art is practice, but part is intuitive as well,” Cruz said. Does the public appreciate the skill required to do this? “There are some who just take their cup and don’t think about it. But sometimes, when Sean produces one of his tulips in the foam, or Abbie draws one of her swans, the customer realizes that it’s a beverage that has been hand-crafted, that it is one-of-a-kind. These people always look up and smile. It’s a rewarding moment for all,” Cruz said.

Now, I have a monthly burlesque variety show at Warehouse Live (KiKi Maroon’s Burly Q Lounge) and The BCBC Festival.” How many different acts will there be? “The BCBC Festival has 21 acts, featuring over 40 artists from around the world!” Do you rehearse and where? “I rehearse at home every day,” she said. “I also teach burlesque classes at Euphoric Woman Studios which also has a rehearsal space.” What’s your favorite part about burlesque and what would surprise people who have never been? “The comedy! While I love producing shows, standup comedy is my passion. I bring a lot of that into every show that I host. It also means that I love comedic burlesque. A lot of people don’t think that a woman stripping can be funny, but some of my favorite performers have a Bette Midler feel. They’re strong, funny, sexy women who know how to put on a good show!” Tickets are available now at Warehouselive.com or BCBCfestival.com starting at $20. I was surprised to learn of Maroon’s burlesque side of life. Until I learned she favors the comedic side of burlesque, her clown act is hysterical. Embarrassingly, I’ve only caught one performance by Maroon, but I know her off the “stage,” and she has a magnetic personality. You

Millinery was my specialty which led to several commissions from burlesque performers in Austin. Their costumes were so detailed and opulent! It was love at first sight. I booked a couple of performers to come to Houston for a small fashion show and the response was huge. Houston didn’t have much of a burlesque scene

Craft Chronicles
Australian-American fusion brews in Texas
Welcome back to Craft Chronicles! April is one of those perfect months to enjoy craft beer, especially since it’s the in between “winter” and summer time where you can actually sit outside comfortably without scurrying back inside for summer hibernation. This month we hit up the ever expanding Platypus Brewing down over on Washington Avenue, a very unique Australian/American fusion brewery. With the guidance of their award winning West Coast head brewer, Kerry Embertson, they use a variety of Aussie hops and add in a mix of American IBUs. [IBU = International Bitterness Unit, brought to you by hops!] On a lively Sunday afternoon, I rolled in with a diaper bag backpack, a double stroller with two increasingly mobile infants and my boss, err wife, to check this place out. While strolling inside to grab a flight I couldn’t help but notice all the great textures at play and the overall feel of the place. With exposed brick and shiplap siding of different colors on the walls, the stained wooden tables and metal chairs provide the perfect arena to have a pint and enjoy some food

from their full kitchen complete with a great selection of Aussie pies. As the outdoors was calling my name, I went out on the covered patio to revel in the glory of the beautiful day. There were people watching the Masters on TV, others playing cornhole and everyone was having a good time. My crew sat down with partners Sean [but you have to
say it like “sh-yawn”] and Morgan and head brewer, Kerry at a picnic table with a generous flight of beers to sample. My sights were set on the Freckled Dingo Pale Ale, their newest release. They haven’t even had time to update their menus with it, so you know it’s fresh. It’s 5.2% ABV (alcohol by volume) with 35 IBUs of the most sought after hops on the mar-
ket, Mosaic, Citra and Galaxy. It was crystal clear and golden through and through. Kerry stressed that “beers need a beginning, middle, and end” and this beer sure had all three. Up front it was crisp with a huge nose of citrus and melon. In the middle, a slight hop bitterness set in playing with a restrained and very clean maltiness. The end was more hops and a smooth bitterness coming together to taunt you into having another drink, but this taster didn’t last long and I will be headed back very soon to enjoy more of “The Ranga” red ale and the “Stars at Night” coffee porter made with Catalina Coffee from right across the street. Maybe I’ll see you there!
Hopdoddy Burger Bar, known for its wide variety of high-quality burgers, housemade buns, local craft beer and hand cut Kennebec fries, will open its third Houston location at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, April 25, in the Vintage Park Shopping Center, 142 Vintage Park Blvd, Ste A. The new location will have the same popular menu featuring burgers made with a variety freshly ground proteins like American Grass Fed Kobe, chicken and sushi-grade tuna. Menu highlights include the Magic Shroom made with Angus beef, Texas goat cheese, field mushrooms and basil pesto; and the Buffalo Bill made with bison, apple-smoked bacon, blue jack cheese, Frank’s hot sauce and the burger bar’s secret sassy sauce. Hopdoddy Vintage Park will also serve the recently introduced Hoss’ Hot Chicken featuring a fried Nashville hot chicken breast atop house made baby kale slaw. The Breakdown: “Antidote? Have I been poisoned?” You may ask yourself. The answer is probably. Better safe than sorry and head on over to this cozy shop. This location was especially designed for those who love temporary blindness caused by early morning sunbeams directly into their corneas. Compliments of the giant east facing windows. They serve great coffee and have a limited amount of pastries that go quickly. Parking can be a bit tricky and leaving your vehicle on the middle of Yale is frowned upon. So I may recommend that you carpool, ride your bicycle or dust off the roller blades for transportation during peak hours. This place has a real “grandma’s house” feel but has your rebellious cousin from Austin’s art work on the walls. The one thing missing outside of someone yelling at you to use the coasters is music. So the seating areas have the unique

ability to be very loud or like your middle school’s detention hall lunch room. The best feature of this venue is the giant porch seating area which has ample seating and is perfect December through March. Lastly, leave your trucks and dualies in the barn if you plan to park in their parking lot. Either that or run the risk of seeing how many points your turn will be and if you are able to avoid the trash cans as you try to turn around. The breakdown: Get to know your medieval bludgeoning weapons folks, their logo is a “Morningstar”, not a mace. For those who are confused, their logo is a spiked ball attached to a chain and handle. What that has to do with coffee is beyond me, but what I do know is that their coffee is
great and their donuts are even better. They are tucked back in a shopping center and can be difficult to find. There are a couple of gyms next door so you can tell your significant other you are going to work out and secretly sneak on over to binge on gourmet donuts and full fat lattes. The biggest surprise of my initial trip to Morningstar was in the restroom which probably sounds over the top. Rest assured in what I am about to impart; it isn’t going to where you may think. They have powdered hand soap, what will hipsters surprise me with next?

The ambience is loud and it feels like this is a place for serious coffee people and serious people only. No dilly dallying here, last I went, they don’t even have Wi-Fi. So you may even have to occupy your mind with conversation or bring your recent copy of The Leader. The seating has a tendency to be crowded and you will probably sit at a table with strangers. Nibbles On March 9, The Leader reported the closing of Heights restaurant Arthur Ave. The team behind Helen Greek Food and Wine in Rice Village launched Arthur in early August 2016 but said that despite early good reviews and business “a consistent pattern of under performing sales over the last few months has indicated that the team’s passion for the Italian concept ultimately did not translate to its Studewood location.” In its place, the team would reopen a new concept, Helen in the Heights. It did not take long for the restaurant group to get to work - Helen in the Heights opened on Tuesday, April 11 at 1111 Studewood. Mascalzone on North Shepherd shutters The Italian restaurant announced on March 26 that they would be closing the 1500 Shepherd Dr. location and merging with their Westheimer location at 12126 Westheimer Rd. Austin based taco joint opens on Washington Ave. Tacodeli, an Austin based taqueria concept, opened this week at 1902 Washington Ave. This quick-format restaurant will be open daily for breakfast and lunch; open weekdays 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.: breakfast 7-11 a.m. and lunch 11 a.m.-3 p.m.; weekends 8 a.m.-3 p.m.: breakfast all day and lunch 11 a.m. -3 p.m.

Fat Cat Creamery in the Heights cuts no corners when it comes to their handcrafted premium ice cream. To start, their milk and heavy cream come from Texas dairy farmers Mill-King Creamery in McGregor. Eggs come straight from Ole Dad Farms and fresh ingredients and more from The Barry Farm in Needville. For a coffee taste this month, I stopped by the shop to try one of their regular flavors – Amaya Coffee and Cream. The small batch ice cream is made with Amaya Coffee, which is a local roast by the same owners of Catalina Coffee. “We use about a pound and a half of freshly ground Amaya coffee,” Fat Cat Creamery ice cream chef, Dylan Rodriquez said. “And we do it straight up, where we pour it into our cold ice cream. We soak it for 24 hours, strain it out, and then turn it back up.” Rodriquez said this batch of ice cream takes about four days and often starts this process on Sunday – you’ll want to stop by Wednesday for a fresh taste. The small batch ice cream shop busts their “posteriors” to make the best ice cream possible, Rodriquez said. “There’s a grading of ice cream, so technically ‘ice cream’ is a term defined by the government, so you can’t just call anything ice cream,” Rodriquez said. “That’s why ‘gelato’ is gelato, because it has a lower than 10% milk fat threshold; our ice cream ranges from 12% and up. And that is what makes ice cream premium ice cream.” For an additional example, Rodriquez references Blue Bell ice cream being 10% on the milk fat threshold. Anything below 10% will be labeled as a “non-dairy frozen dessert.” On the menu, Fat Cat Creamery has signature flavors that you can usually always find. They also get seasonal fruit from The Barry Farm and will have rotating fruit flavor options – Rodriquez said to expect berry options coming soon with berries in season. The shop is approaching their four year anniversary, with head cat Sarah Johnston bringing her ice cream shop to the Heights. Rodriquez said he’s been with the shop from the start, and he loves the experience they provide. For coffee lovers, the Amaya Coffee and Cream is one to try on a waffle cone. For sweets lovers, go for the Coffee Cake Sundae – a slice of warm, house made coffee cake, two scoops of Amaya Coffee and Cream ice cream, hot fudge, cashew praline crumbles, whipped cream and a cherry. AVANCE is teaching families to compose their own lives By Jennifer Layer jennifer@theleadernews.com Building a family is not always as easy as it looks on TV. We all have our own struggles that make it hard for us to be able to support our family both emotionally and otherwise. That is where organizations like AVANCE come in. AVANCE is a non-profit organization that works to empower at risk families to break the cycle of poverty through a family engagement approach that combines early childhood development and parenting education. Last Saturday AVANCE hosted its 4th annual luncheon at the Junior League of Houston. The event honored two AVANCE graduate families for their dedication to the program. The luncheon also featured a few guest speakers including journalist, Vicente Arenas; HISD superintendent, Richard Carranza; and Violinist, Kai Kight. During the luncheon, violinist Kai Kight, walked through the crowd of people scarfing down their meals and played a song he composed himself. Kight then walked on to the stage and spoke to the audience about his experience as a composer. Kight explained that he grew up playing the songs prewritten by masters but was always more interested in the music he created himself. Through the support of his conductor, Kight was able to write and play his own music for different audiences around the world. His message was that we, as parents and educators, serve as the conductors for the orchestra that is
our youth. We should not take this responsibility lightly, as we can either teach kids to play the same old songs that were written by someone else years ago, or we can teach them to make their own music and contribute to the world in a more meaningful way. AVANCE strives to accomplish this same goal Kight spoke on, of helping families create their own path to follow, rather than blindly following the path that has been pre-laid before them. HISD superintendent, Richard Carranza, said, “What AVANCE does in terms of empowering parents, not just engaging them but actually empowering them, and the workshops that parents get to go through where they learn how to be their children’s first teacher is just incredible.” With classes ranging from GED preparation to having a healthy marriage, AVANCE offers numerous courses to help parents create a better world for themselves that they can then bring up their children in. Further, AVANCE also offers a great number of programs specifically designed to prepare children for a bright future. “We know that high quality early education, as early as possible, is game changer particularly for students who are economically disadvantaged,” said Carranza. “AVANCE is an example of how to close that gap before students ever walk into kindergarten.” With numerous testimonies to the impact of AVANCE, one parent stands out in particular. Karizma Young, a recent AVANCE graduate, had found herself imprisoned and preg-

nant. “I was a first time mom in difficult situation. I would have never seen myself taking a parenting course because, like most people, I thought I knew everything and would just go to my mom and friends for advice,” said Young. “But I ended up in the AVANCE program and am very grateful for it. It taught me a lot of things as a parent, like patience and guidance and just how to be there for my child.” Another aspect AVANCE works for is encouraging families, both parents and children, to learn English, while also respecting their first language. “Something I really appreciate about AVANCE is they view language, not as a deficit but as an asset that we need to nurture and not strip from children,” said Carranza. “So when you have parents that are getting their parenting classes and learning how to support their children in their native language, and then you see students whose first language is being nurtured and cultivated in the classroom while they are learning English; that’s the goal we all want. We want all of our students to be at least bilingual if not multilingual and AVANCE encourages this.” If you are interested in learning more about AVANCE you can visit www.avance.org.

Former Rice University Admissions Director & Nationally Recognized Scholarship Expert to Lecture on Ways to Slash College Costs Workshop is free – but fills up quickly… Greater Heights, TX - An extremely popular lecture is being held again this year at the Oak Forest Library for the parents of high school freshmen, sophomores, and juniors. The workshop, which is being offered at the library without cost to attendees, will focus on little-known ways of getting grants and scholarships for college, regardless of GPA or how much money a family earns. The class will cover topics such as how to
double or triple eligibility for scholarships (even if a family makes too much money to qualify for financial aid), the secret to attending a private college or university for less than the price of a state school and the single biggest mistake that 9 out of 10 parents make when trying to figure out how to fund their child’s college education. This class is free and registration is required. Tickets are available on a “firstcome, first-served” basis. Space is limited
by the size of the room. It is being held at the Oak Forest Library located at 1349 West 43rd St. Houston, TX 77018 on Saturday, April 22nd, from 10:30am to Noon. Kurt Goedecke, ChFC, is teaching the workshop. Mr. Goedecke was the Assistant Director of Admissions at Rice University. A word to the wise – don’t wait to register. Past events have filled up quickly. To reserve a seat go to www.CollegeMoneyForTexans.org.

SPX coach’s new career begins where it started By Jonathan Valadez For The Leader When Lynn Kercheval retired from coaching in 2015, she never thought she would head a team again, much less the one where her career began. “It’s pretty cool,” she said of her return to St. Pius X. “It’s always been a place that I’ve had an awful lot of fondness for, so I’m really enjoying that.” Kercheval, who began her career at SPX as a volleyball and softball coach in 1985, agreed to come back to the school following her short venture into retirement when Head of School Carmen Armistead reached out to her about a softball vacancy. The two knew each other dating back to their time at rival St. Agnes Academy. Kercheval said that she would not have considered an offer to resume her coaching career had it not been for her close ties to Armistead and SPX in general. As the new softball coach, she brings an impressive resume that goes back all the way to her original days as a Panther. While at St. Pius X, Kercheval won three of the softball team’s nine state titles, and she also captured two volleyball championships. The Panthers haven’t won a state trophy since 1991, which was just a year after Kercheval left. Although she coached against SPX until 2015, she said she was unfamiliar with the players on the team at the start of this season, but she did recognize some faces in the crowd. “There were some moms that I either coached or coached against when they were in high school,” she said. “A couple of the dads used to be in my intermural badminton – I used to run this crazy intermural badminton tournament at St. Pius.” The main reason that she couldn’t recollect any of the current players was because the Panthers are made up almost entirely of freshmen
and sophomores who were in middle school when Kercheval called it a career. Despite the youthfulness of the team, Kercheval said she was excited and intrigued to get the season underway. The Panthers struggled mightily to start the season but have begun making strides since the schedule started to slow down and district commenced. When she took the job, Kercheval said she knew that the team wouldn’t necessarily be primed to contend due to the inexperience and coaching change, but this season has been one filled with unforeseen impediments. “In the whole season, we’ve had three practices now that we’ve actually had everybody there,” she said. “It’s just been a very unusual situation.” Many of the absences have been attributed to injury, while some of them are because of religious, familial or collegiate obligations. In fact, in a recent game against St. John’s School, the exhibition game turned into a scrimmage because SPX could barely field a nine-player team. The team also lacks in the depth department as a result of the limited size of the roster. Junior Grace Ferris is the only pitcher on the team, and senior Rebecca Skouby has moved over to catcher, despite never playing the position at all. When the season began, junior Alyssa Holik was the only other pitcher on staff, but she went down with an undisclosed shoulder injury, so Ferris has had to quite literally shoulder the load and has pitched in every inning of every game. “We’ve played back to back where Ferris is just in there throwing 100,000 pitches, which is very difficult on her,” Kercheval said. “She’s never complained or said she’s tired.” Kercheval added she would’ve changed the schedule had she known that she would’ve been down to just one pitcher for most of the
season. Despite going just 116 in exhibition play, Kercheval has the Panthers in position to grab one of the final playoff spots in TAPPS Division IDistrict 3. SPX is currently in fourth place in the standings at 3-3 and sits two games above sixth-placed Incarnate Word, which gives them breathing room. Following their breakout rookie seasons last year, sophomores Abigail McGee and Haley Parks have continued to impress with their play on the field. “Athletically, I think they are two of the strongest on the team,” Kercheval said. “In pure athletics, I think they could go play any sport and really be a great player.” Kercheval credits the entire team with how they’ve responded to the adversity with such resiliency. She said she is proud of the fight of her team and believes they are on the verge of seeing a reversal of their early season misfortunes. “We’ve definitely learned a lot, improved a lot and it just seems like we’re right on the cusp of seeing more improvement than I think we’ve seen,” she said. “Like the other day, even though we had a loss, we did two or three things that we’ve just never been able to achieve in a game, and I thought that was really great.” The team is entering the second half of their district schedule and looks to build on the progression they have made in the early stages of league play. Although a shot at the first or second seed is implausible at this point in the season, the Panthers are still in a position to qualify for the playoffs by capturing one of the final three spots, which looks more likely given their midseason rejuvenation. And after that, who knows what will transpire. “We’re a little low in the rankings to make a huge impact, but if we can just find a way to get into the playoffs, I’m hoping by then, we will have made an exponential leap,” Kercheval said.
